Lorrain : Le manque d’eau au Morne Capot attise encore la colère des riverains

Black Immigrant Daily News

Rowley: We cannot accept crime rate

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

News

Prime Minister Dr Rowley – SUREASH CHOLAI

THE Prime Minister said the notion of multiple shootings must not be deemed as the norm in the minds of the citizenry.

Speaking on Monday ceremonial opening of the new parliamentary term, after being asked about the recent spate of gun violence, Dr Rowley said:

“It’s a period of violent crime that none of us can accept as normal, but we have to respond to it on a daily basis. But we also have to continue to manage our personal and national affairs while this appendage is dealt with.

“So we can’t pretend it is normal and we can’t accept it as normal and we will not accept it as normal.”

Asked if he was confident of a turnaround in crime, he replied, “I expect we’ll be able to do so going forward.”

Rowley said he had “very high hopes” for the new session of Parliament.

“Very high hopes. We’ve got a lot of work to do and the Government will get a lot of work done.”

Newsday asked his hopes for the September 26 national budget.

He said, “Well you know what a budget is. A budget is a series of estimates and we hope we have the revenue to go with that. We’ll make the most of what’s available to us.” Newsday asked if he was confident the budget and parliamentary session could tackle crime and poverty.

“Well, we have abandoned no area of responsibility and the budget covers a wide spectrum. Health, national security, health, education are all high up on the priority list.

“There is an unacceptably high level of crime. We’re going to focus on that. We’ll make the resources available, reasonable resources. We expect that those that are involved in crime-fighting will give of their best and we are also anticipating that our courts will be more effective and justice will be dispensed in a speedier way and we expect our detection levels will improve. These are the goals we set ourselves.”

Asked President Paula-Mae Weekes’ earlier upbraid to MPs on their conduct in Parliament, Rowley was unfazed.

He said, “There’s nothing new to it. We usually get things like that in Parliament.” Asked if MPs are generally getting the balance right between decorum and expressing the cut-and-thrust of political debate, the PM said, “All I’ll say to that is that people who are familiar with Commonwealth parliaments, see Trinidad and Tobago as one of the milder ones.”

Persad-Bissessar: Parliament no bishops’ tea party

OPPOSITION Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar reacted to President’s Paula-Mae Weekes’ upbraid of MPs over their sometimes unruly conduct by saying Parliament was not a bishops’ tea party.

Speaking in the Red House Rotunda after the ceremonial opening on Monday, the Siparia MP made it clear one must live in the real world of how parliaments globally function.

“Yes, we are elected to represent people and sometimes we have to do so stridently. We have to make our voices heard on behalf of people we represent.

“So I think it is being out of touch with reality. Not the point about working together – of course we should try to work together – but it’s not a bishops’ tea party and sometimes to have those voices represented you have to be strident, you have to be loud, on both sides (of the House).”

She said both sides of the House get shut down.

“I do respectfully honour the office of the President but it would be good if the President would honour her own words.

“We have had matters relating to interference with constitutional duties arising. We had cause to raise it in the Parliament but of course that went south…wasn’t allowed full debate.” Persad-Bissessar said Weekes must honour her own words and not just come to Parliament to buff-up MPs.

“Perhaps she would spend a little more time in the Parliament to see how it functions and why it functions in the way it does. I respectfully believe that somehow her words were misplaced.”

Persad-Bissessar however agreed with Weekes’ remark that MPs must serve the happiness of ordinary people, but said that had not occurred in the last parliamentary session.

“I’ve not seen legislation brought to fight against the scourge of crime. I’ve not seen legislation brought to deal with the poverty we are in.” She also pointed to inaction over the high cost of living.

Persad-Bissessar said she looks forward to the new session including on how crime would be addressed.

She said the Opposition would caucus on whether to continue to walk out whenever Attorney General Reginald Armour, SC, stands to speak.

Opposition MPs have walked out of the chamber whenever Armour rises to speak, ever since he became embroiled in a controversy over his remarks to a Florida law court which subsequently disqualified him from representing the Government.

Judges blanked from Parliament opening because of no space

Black Immigrant Daily News

THE LUCKY FEW: Five appellate judges including these four in their courtroom garb, were invited to the ceremonial opening of the new parliamentary session in the Red House on Monday. However, no high court judge was invited. PHOTO BY ROGER JACOB –

IN A break from tradition, High Court judges were not invited to the ceremonial opening of Parliament on Monday. A judge told Newsday only judges of the Court of Appeal were invited.

“Apparently, none of the High Court judges were invited to the Parliament opening. That is a break in years of ceremony and tradition.

“Plus, no explanation was given to us or even an indication that they are sorry but we cannot be accommodated or anything. Just utter disregard,” the judge said.

When contacted, an official of the Parliament’s corporate communications department said the omission was “due to reasons of space.”

Five appellate judges were invited and attended the ceremonial opening: acting Chief Justice Alice Yorke-Soo Hon and Justices Gregory Smith, Maria Wilson, Ronnie Boodoosingh and Malcolm Holdip. Also present were acting Registrar Raymond Roberts and court executive administrator Christie-Anne Morris-Alleyne

Meanwhile, judges in the civil division began moving into their new chambers at Tower D of the Waterfront Centre, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain, on Monday.

They also held their first virtual trials from the Waterfront location. Civil appellate court judges are also expected to move to Tower D.

In May 2020, former attorney general Faris Al-Rawi said the Judiciary will occupy at least 13 floors in Tower D, which will allow the Judiciary’s administration offices, in multiple buildings in rented spaces, to be consolidated in one place, saving almost $6 million a year.

The move was expected in 2020, but was pushed back because of the pandemic. Udecott is in charge of outfitting the new location, with the input of the Judiciary.

The relocation now provides the Hall of Justice with 40 courtrooms, 24 hearing rooms, five mediation rooms, and some 69 criminal courtrooms. Courtrooms have been outfitted with video screens to broadcast live streams linking prisoners and witnesses in various virtual access customer centres.

Jury trials, which were suspended in March 2020, resumed in March this year.

In June, two jury trials were held in Port of Spain and San Fernando, with the latter using the newly established O’Meara Judicial Centre.

Since then, another similar centre was established in Princes Town to facilitate more jury trials from the San Fernando Supreme Court, while others are listed for hearing at the Hall of Justice, Port of Spain, and the Supreme Court in Tobago.

In his opening address for the 2019/ 2020 law term in September 2019, Chief Justice Ivor Archie announced the impending move of the civil courts to Tower D. He said the Judiciary was thrilled to move to Tower D as it had outgrown the Hall of Justice and many of its support units were scattered all over Port of Spain in rented accommodation.

The Parliament, which previously occupied that location, returned to the Red House in January 2020.

Rowley: TT must secure energy future now

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

News

GRAB THE OPPORTUNITY: Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley makes a point during a press conference on Monday at the Diplomatic Centre in St James. PHOTO BY AYANNA KINSALE –

THE Prime Minister is warning that unless investments are secured, declining natural gas levels could have dire consequences for the future of TT’s economy.

Dr Rowley gave this grim warning at a media conference on Monday at the Diplomatic Centre, St Anns where he also summarised the outcome of meeting he held with executives from major energy companies during a recent trip to Europe.

Rowley left on September 2, where he first met with officials from the Proman energy company in Zurich, Switzerland and in Dusseldorf, Germany, before meeting with BP executives in London and then Shell’s executives in The Hague.

On these meetings, Rowley said he is satisfied TT would continue to benefit further from arrangements made, adding that such negotiations are critical to secure the country’s energy interests.

He said government has closely monitored the state of the global energy market and deemed it necessary to take certain steps, including meeting with leaders of energy companies to negotiate current and future terms of engagement.

Rowley said there are concerns that unless investments are made – sooner rather than later – TT’s natural gas reserves would decline severely, causing a cascade effect on TT’s economy and the standard of living of people.

He stressed that government is working to reverse this trend through meetings and negotiations with international energy companies.

“If we do not make the decisions that are to be made now and the investment that has to be made now, the diagram shows that by 2026, 2027, 2028 the levels of gas that would be available to Trinidad and Tobago, if no new improvements are had, will have far-reaching consequences for government revenues and, I daresay, for the quality of life for all people in Trinidad and Tobago.

“That is why a delegation from this country led by the Prime Minister including the Minister of Energy sat down with those who are able to make these investments and hold out to us the prospect of finding new sources, so as to maintain our production levels, our revenue levels and our standard of living.”

LISTENING: Energy Minister Stuart Young listens as the prime minister speaks during the press conference. PHOTO BY AYANNA KINSALE –

He warned, “If we sit idly by and wait for something to happen in our favour, it is quite possible that certain decisions which are critical to us may not be made in our favour. It may be postponed, shelved or abandoned completely.”

Rowley said during TT’s peak production years, 4.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas was produced daily, compared to current figures of 2.9 billion cubic feet.

He said during his meeting with Proman, discussions were held to possibly include TT in accessing funding for green energy and alternative energy generation and storage.

Noting that the Proman company had full experience in project development and finance, discussions were also had on possibly using their services in TT.

Asked what were the details of the arrangements made with Proman, Rowley said while he would prefer the companies themselves to announce the specifics of the terms, but added he was confident it placed TT in a better position on the global energy market.

“We are satisfied that we are not being left behind or left out and on the contrary we in Trinidad and Tobago are at the forefront of investments being made by this company which has these kinds of far-reaching consequences.”

Nicki Minaj Twitter Rant Earns A Spicy Response From Cardi B

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

Nicki Minaj is getting more direct with her subtweets as she called out Cardi B for bashing a fan whose house was recently burnt down. Cardi has since respond where seemingly suggest her rap rival is using her for clout and is afraid to mention her directly.

Nicki Minaj has been on a Twitter rampage from Sunday night after an hour-long rant where she attacked Garcelle Beauvais for interviewing Jennifer Hough, the woman who accused her husband of rape, and she ranted about other rappers who were going up against her.

Some fans even felt that part of her rant was directed at Megan Thee Stallion, who wasted no time in responding to a claim by Minaj. According to the Trinidadian rapper, someone told her to have an abortion when she was in the early stages of pregnancy with her son. Her fans suggest that she is speaking about Megan Thee Stallion. The Houston rapper quickly responded calling the accusation lies.

On Monday, Minaj continued her subtweets which were easily deciphered as she hinted that she was going to launch a defamation lawsuit against bloggers.

While Minaj had earlier stated that the reason for the lawsuit was because Lee and others claimed that she was a cocaine user, it’s unclear why she was sub-tweeting at Cardi B.

One of her fans on Twitter posted, “yall peep what kyle just did? Purposely posted a shortened clip of what nicki said about garcelle so that people will drag her. He hasn’t posted shit about #that lady going to court this morning btw.”

Minaj had a response to the tweet as she called out Afernee and referenced a Cardi B tweet.

“Has he posted anything about b***hs making fun of someone’s house burning down? I had his a$$ on my show and barbz are the oone that got his site popping,” she wrote. “Stop going on that sh*t. Report & move on. And I haven’t seen his site today but I’m just saying.”

Twitter

The incident Nicki Minaj is referring to is a response by Cardi B to a Twitter user who tried to troll her.

“B**ch please, you wear these once your body start to reject that surgery,” the commenter said about a photo of Cardi’s swollen feet. The Bronx rapper also had a savage reply for the troll. “You though you ate that like the fire ate your house …. Now go to your roo..oops my bad,” Cardi wrote back.

Twitter

Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj also responded to a post by Lee where he said that he had submitted The Neighborhood Talk to be verified by Instagram in response to Minaj vindictively asking her thousands of fans to report the page and shut it down.

Minaj also had a cheeky reply to a fan who shared the post and said, “the DUDS are working together.”

“Exactly. We been knew he doing his dirty work. what yOu NoT gon Do is be able to afford this defamation lawsuit. Lmaooooo Judd [Burstein] (Minaj’s lawyer) said in 40 years he’s never seen anyones fanbase send this much evidence in support of a celebrity,” Minaj wrote.

Cardi B has since issued a response pretty much saying that her nemesis didn’t mention her by name or at her.

“This sh** is tiring, old, and redundant,” Cardi tweeted. “Same formula, DIFFERENT YEAR start chaos, drama, and then promote their sh**. I actually have a life outside of my house and Twitter. Until b***hes put a @ on it they talking to their mother. Byeeee.”
