Iga Swiatek is the 2022 US Open Champion

World number one, Iga Swiatek capped a dominant season by beating Tunisian fifth seed, Ons Jabeur at the US Open last Saturday to win her second major title of 2022.

Poland’s Swiatek, 21, won 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to secure the season’s final Grand Slam trophy on the New York hard courts.

After a one-sided first set, 28-year-old Jabeur settled midway through the second but it was not enough to stop Swiatek clinching a third major title.

Swiatek’s previous two wins both came on the clay at the French Open.

Jabeur also lost in the Wimbledon final in July, and her wait for one of the sport’s four most prestigious titles continues.

The Flushing Meadows final was a meeting between the two leading players on the WTA Tour this year, but Swiatek demonstrated why there is such a big gap between her and the rest with a largely dominant performance.

Swiatek remains the world number one, and would have done so even if she had lost, with Jabeur moving up to a joint career-high ranking of second after reaching the final.

THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine is yet to make a statement on Watson Duke’s future role as Deputy Chief Secretary.

At the post-Executive Council media briefing last Thursday, Augustine said he was reviewing Duke’s responsibilities and a decision would be announced in a media release over the weekend.

On that occasion, he accused Duke, political leader of the Progressive Democratic Patriots, of shirking several of his responsibilities as Deputy Chief Secretary.

Augustine also said Duke may be relieved of his responsibilities altogether.

“I want to make it very publicly clear that immediately post-this press briefing, a review of the DCS’ portfolio and the areas assigned to him will be done and I assure you that before the end of the weekend you will get some press release indicating what the decision is,” he had told reporters.

This has not materialised.

Augustine’s review of the Deputy Chief Secretary’s functions came in the wake of Duke’s claim that the THA had abandoned some 27 members of the Roxborough Folk Performers who had gone to New York to perform at several events during Labor Day celebrations.

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has underscored his administration’s commitment to its ‘One Laptop Per Child’ policy, declaring that it will be realised during the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) reign.

“The ‘One Laptop Per Child’ policy will be fulfilled during our term in government,” Pierre declared last week on Facebook.

He explained that access to technology can spur youth creativity, providing opportunities for careers in science and data-driven fields.

“We are committed to giving our children the tools to excel and become global citizens,” the Castries East MP asserted.

On September 8, Pierre joined Education Minister Shawn Edward and senior Education Ministry officials to hand over a consignment of Chromebooks to Entrepot Secondary School students.

His office said more than 14,000 computer and laptop devices have been distributed to Saint Lucian students since the SLP came to office following the July 26, 2021 general elections.
