Jamaica records best summer for tourism in country’s history Loop Jamaica

Jamaica has, this year, recorded the best stopover visitor arrivals figure and foreign exchange earnings for any summer period in the country’s history.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett indicated that “we have 5,000 more visitors than in [the summer of] 2019, which was a record year; [and] the better news is that our earnings in the summer [of 2022 are] up 20 per cent over 2019.”

“So, not only is it that the numbers [of visitors] came, but the earnings from tourism also grew. So… this summer is the best summer that tourism has experienced in the history of Jamaica,” the Minister added.

He was addressing the welcome ceremony for the 18th annual USA Travel Advisor Golf Tournament at Sandals Ochi Beach Resort in St Ann on September 10.

Bartlett said that at the beginning of 2022, the tourism sector was projected to earn US$3.5 billion and welcome approximately 2.3 million stopover visitors for the year, to be the Caribbean’s fastest-growing tourist destination.

“However, we are now up to 2.6 million projections for stopover visitors, not including cruise [passengers], and the projection for earnings is a whopping US$4.2 billion,” he said.

The minister said prior to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, “we had projected for this to happen five years down the road… in 2025.”

He pointed out that “you see what recovery has done and how strong that recovery is”, based on the outturns to date.

Meanwhile, Bartlett said Jamaica’s economy has recorded up to five consecutive quarters of growth, noting that, in every period, tourism has led the outturns.

He cited, as an example, the 5.7 per cent economic growth recorded in the April to June 2022 quarter, of which the tourism and hospitality sector led with 55.4 per cent.

Bartlett said this resulted from the hard work of stakeholders who made the destination more “pleasing and desired”.

Over 150 travel advisors from across the US will be participating in the golf tournament, which is being held for the first time since the pandemic’s onset.

The two-day event, which takes place from September 12 to 13, will comprise teams playing in a four-member scramble format, putting their skills to the test, and competing in various competitions throughout the tournament.

Categories to be contested include Overall Champions and Runners Up; Closest to Pin Female; Closest to Pin Male; Longest Drive Female; and Longest Drive Male.

The tournament is expected to benefit and improve Jamaica’s image as a golfing destination.

A woman was recently convicted in St John’s Magistrates’ Court on a number of charges, including impersonating a law-enforcement officer.

Last week, Odella Limerick appeared before Magistrate Conliffe Clarke and pleaded guilty to receiving and to impersonating a police officer.

Limerick was convicted and fined a total of $4,000 – $3,000 on the receiving charge and $1,000 for the impersonation – and was ordered to pay $1,500 forthwith.

The balance is to be paid before November 15 or, in default, she will spend four months at Her Majesty’s Prison on the impersonation charge and six months for receiving. The sentences would be served concurrently.

Meanwhile, Tony Henry will make his first appearance in the District B All Saints Magistrate’s Court this morning, September 12, before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel-Edwards.

After capturing the man, who had fled the scene of a stop-and-search exercise, the Police charged him with unlawful possession of a firearm; possession of eight 9 mm rounds of ammunition; and possession of 357 grammes of cannabis.

Henry, 30, of Collins, had escaped from law enforcers on Sunday, September 4, during an exercise undertaken in John Hughes. However, he was apprehended in Old Road on Thursday, September 8.

UPP promises transparency and accountability in spending taxpayers’ money, with no secret deals like the $540M bond

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

The United Progressive Party (UPP) is promising taxpayers that, once re-elected to office, it will take every step to ensure their money is spent prudently and they will know exactly where it is being spent.

Political Leader Harold Lovell notes it was the UPP that introduced national consultations on the economy, which were held regularly, up until 2013 before the general elections.

He recalls that consultations were had with members of the business community, the trade unions, and other interest groups to seek their input on the budget to be presented the following year.

Events like these demonstrate to taxpayers how their monies are being spent, Lovell says.

The Political Leader says the UPP is committed to continuing such programmes to ensure transparency and accountability.

Meanwhile, Lovell says the people are not yet aware of the gravity of the Browne Administration’s mismanagement of their finances.

He was referring to the EC$540 million bond that the Government took out on July 31, 2021 – without making it known to the people or taking it to the Parliament.

A US cruise ship passenger was killed by a shark while snorkelling near the Bahamas on Tuesday, according to local authorities.

The 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania was on an excursion near Green Cay near Nassau when the incident took place.

Police later said that the family identified the shark as a bull shark. A similar incident in the area took the life of a 21-year-old American in 2019.

Despite gripping public attention, shark attacks are exceedingly rare.

Bahamian police spokeswoman Chrislyn Skippings told reporters that the woman was on an excursion with a local tour company, which took her to the popular snorkelling area.

Family members and tour company staff saw her being attacked and managed to pull her from the water. A local news outlet, Eyewitness News, quoted Ms Skippings as saying that the victim suffered wounds to her “upper extremities”.

The victim was declared dead by authorities after being taken to shore.

Her cruise ship, the Harmony of the Seas, was docked in Nassau at the time of the attack. It had just begun its seven day cruise of the western Caribbean from Port Canaveral in Florida on 4 September.

Cruise operator Royal Caribbean International said in a statement that they are “providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

The incident is the first fatal shark attack in the Bahamas since 2019, when a 21-year-old woman from California was attacked by sharks near Rose Island, about half a mile (0.8km) away from Tuesday’s attack.

In another recent incident, an eight-year-old British boy was injured after being attacked by three sharks in another part of the Bahamas. His father later told The Sun that the attack “was like a scene out of Jaws”.

In total, statistics from the Florida-based International Shark Attack File show that only about 32 shark attacks have been reported in the Bahamas since 1749, the highest number in the region.

Michael Heithaus, a marine biologist at Florida International University in Miami, told the Associated Press that the relatively high number of shark attacks in the area is likely due to the high number of people in the waters, which are home to a vibrant marine ecosystem.

Globally, there were 73 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks in 2021, including nine which resulted in death.

Segun splicacion di Harms e fondo di San Benny tabata tin anemia

*San Benny tabata tin su amigonan ora su “budget tabata low”

“Placa di devotonan di San Mike di Penthouse y San Benny di Tereno

ORANJESTAD(AAN)—Na 2009 e momento grandi den su bida a yega.

Mitar BBO y tur hende a stima Mike.

Benny y AVP tabata tin mas amigo, cu tabata amigo di Mike tambe pasobra aparentemente den AVP tur hende stima otro.

San Benny di Tereno asina tabata tin asistencia di su friend Sussebeek cu no tabata bay oficina pero tabata traha na telefon. Huez a haci remarke, pero aparentemente e Huez Hulandes no a comprende cu den calor hopi milager ta socede ora friends stima otro.

E inocencia di San Mike di Penthouse y di San Benny di Tereno ta bolbe bini dilanti. San Mike di Penthouse y San Benny di Tereno no tabata mira nada malo den terenonan cu tabata bay pa Family and Friends.

Tin hopi cos cu pober San Benny di Tereno no tabata sa.

Tur dos fondo a keda afecta ora cu cupo di trabou a bay perdi, y pesey Gobierno mester a percura pa yena e deficit cu a resulta door di falta di entrada.

Cubri entrada di Gobierno cu a cay atras cu 834 miyon florin

E entrada di Gobierno a cay atras cu 834 miyon florin. Den aña 2020 e perdida tabata 352 miyon florin, den aña 2021 e tabata 334 miyon florin y den aña 2022 e perdida tabata 149 miyon florin. E debe a bay pa cubri necesidad y no luho

E tempo eynan no tabata tin pandemia pues ta debe cu a wordo crea ta haci intencionalmente y no pa necesidad. Pa e debate publico riba ken a traha debe ta importante pa haci e distincion aki.
