The Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport has noted concern expressed by some members of the public over the Marchand Main Road Rehabilitation project currently underway.

We would like to assure the public that what is currently seen is NOT the final surface. However, the periods of inclement weather over the past two weeks have delayed the commencement of the second phase.

So far, the contractor has identified and corrected the soft spots on the roadway, and the current layer of asphalt is the surface layer, meant to level out the road before the final layer is applied. This surface layer also serves the purpose of controlling dust and improve the rideability of the roadway.

The next phase, expected to commence in the coming days, will involve the application of the final layer of asphalt called the ‘wearing course’ and drain repairs along the Marchand Main Road, along with the installation of the necessary, signs, speed calming devices and road markings.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged in the interim to exercise caution when traversing the Marchand Main Road, and to adhere to Saint Lucia’s Traffic Laws.

The Department of Infrastructure regrets any inconveniences that have been caused to the public so far as a result of the roadworks and will advise on the commencement of the next phase.

iCarly star Jeannette McCurdy writes book ‘I’m glad my mom died’ Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Released just about a month ago, August 9, 2022, ‘I’m glad my mom died’ is now a #1 New York Bestseller.

The former actor and singer Jeannette McCurdy has struck gold with her first novel sharing the abuse that she endured at the hands and lips of her mother, who passed away in 2013.

American writer, director, actress, and producer, 36-year-old Lena Dunham, who is known as the creator, writer, and star of the HBO television series Girls, read and reviewed McCurdy’s novel and had this to say. She called it ‘An important cultural document’.

Sold on Barnes & Noble and Amazon as well as many other places in its hardcover form or for Kindle or as an audiobook or audio CD, ‘I’m glad my mom died’ is now an international bestseller.

So what’s the book about?

A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor–including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother–and how she retook control of her life.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail–just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

Reports from the police are that McFarlene got into an argument with a woman with whom he had an intimate relationship. McFarlene reportedly used a handgun to hit the woman in her head and robbed her of $10,000 before fleeing the scene.

Valerie Albert Fevrier’s Husband, Son Serve Notice Of Claim Against Local Surgeon – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The husband and son of the late Valerie Albert Fevrier have announced formal notice of a claim against a local surgeon involved in her medical treatment.

The announcement came in a statement Wednesday.

The complete statement appears below:

Today marks one year since the death of founding Director of Helen Television System, Valerie Albert Fevrier. Miss Albert as she was affectionately known succumbed overseas after local medical interventions here proved inadequate.

Today the husband and son of Miss Albert are honoring her memory and speaking out on efforts to hold accountable members of the medical profession.

“We wish to announce today that we have served formal notice of a claim against a local surgeon who was involved in the medical treatment of my wife. We believe that his actions- or lack thereof – resulted in her death. We believe that the standard of medical care practiced by him in her treatment fell far below the minimal acceptable standards, even for a small third world country like St. Lucia.”

Our actions will not bring her back, but in keeping with statements we made a year ago, we believe that medical professionals need be held accountable when they fall short.

We believe some of these doctors need to be re-certified and renew the Hippocratic oath. There are too many cases which go unreported and unchallenged.

If anything, we hope that this case will go a long way in holding medical professionals more accountable.

As part of the process, we are also lodging a formal complaint with the Medical Council.

Napoli overwhelm Liverpool in 4-1 Champions League Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

NAPLES, Italy (AP) — Liverpool have a long way to go to regain the form that took then to the final of last season’s Champions League.

Napoli overwhelmed the English power with three first-half goals in a 4-1 win in the opening round of group play on Wednesday.

Piotr Zielinski converted a penalty, Andr?-Frank Zambo Anguissa doubled the lead after the half-hour mark and substitute Giovanni Simeone — the son of Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone — scored on his competition debut just before the break.

Zielinski added another two minutes after the break before Luis D?az finally pulled one back for Liverpool on a counterattack in the 49th.

“We were miles too open. You can’t come to a place like this and not stay compact,” Liverpool left back Andy Robertson said. “Too many times they turned and had big open spaces to run at.

“Unfortunately, we deserved this result, the way we were wide open. We need to wake up, and quickly.”

Liverpool have now failed to win all four of their visit to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, while coach J?rgen Klopp dropped to 0-4 in his career in Naples. Klopp was sent off during a loss while coaching Borussia Dortmund in 2013, then was at the helm for Liverpool defeats in 2018 and 2019.

Ajax beat Rangers 4-0 in the other Group A match earlier.

Liverpool have started the Premier League season with just two wins from six games. Napoli are unbeaten in five Serie A matches and lead the league with 12 goals scored despite the offseason departures of captain Lorenzo Insigne, all-time leading scorer Dries Mertens and defensive stalwart Kalidou Koulibaly.

The recent form of the two teams held as Napoli got off to a blistering start.

In the opening minute, Victor Osimhen beat Liverpool’s offside trap and dribbled around goalkeeper Alisson before striking a shot off the outside of the post from a sharp angle.

Four minutes later, Zielinski sent Alisson the wrong way with his spot kick after Liverpool captain James Milner deflected a shot from the Poland midfielder with his arm.

Osimhen then won another penalty after Virgil van Dijk stepped on his boot but Alisson blocked the ensuing spot kick from the Nigeria center forward.

Zielinski turned provider for Zambo Anguissa, who finished off a give-and-take with the Pole to make it 2-0.

Simeone, who had come on for an aching Osimhen, tapped in a cross from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the 21-year-old Georgia winger who has been tearing up Serie A with four goals in five matches. Kvaratskhelia dribbled by two players on the left flank before setting up Simeone perfectly.

Zielinski’s second came on a rebound of his own shot after Alisson failed to collect.

“It was almost the perfect match,” Zielinski said. “We don’t know how far we can go from here.”

Liverpool, which lost last season’s final 1-0 to Real Madrid, are sorely missing departed forward Sadio Mane, who transferred to Bayern Munich. Injuries are also hitting hard in central midfield, while fourth-choice Joe Gomez looked rusty at center back.

Cops to roll out more quick response teams, public order campaigns Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) will be strengthening its public order campaigns and expanding its quick response teams to make further gains in tackling serious and violent crimes.

Addressing the JCF’s monthly press briefing, Commissioner of Police, Major General Antony Anderson outlined that the quick response arm of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) is a direct response to robberies and other violent crimes, including those committed by motorcyclists who would otherwise be challenging to intercept.

These teams have been deployed in the St James, Kingston and St Andrew, St Elizabeth, and St Catherine South police divisions.

“Since the establishment of these teams in March 2021, they have effected over 600 arrests and seized 49 illegal firearms,” Anderson said.

“In one of the latest incidents, three men who committed a murder and subsequently engaged the quick response team in a shoot-out on Orange Street in downtown Kingston, were apprehended and charged,” he added.

Three illegal firearms and several rounds of ammunition were also seized in that operation.

“Additional personnel are now in training to be deployed to other parts of the island, including St Ann and St Catherine North (police divisions),” Anderson said.

On the matter of public order, the top law enforcer pointed to a number of ongoing operational initiatives islandwide.

Among them is the recently launched ‘Operation Restore Paradise’, a public order reset in Montego Bay, St James.

“We are seeing improvements in terms of the overall appearance of the downtown (Montego Bay) area and the restoration of order.

“This initiative required a multi-agency approach and, in order to sustain these improvements, a long-term commitment from all of the stakeholders involved is critical,” Anderson insisted.

“We will continue to work with our key partners, such as the municipal corporation, public health department, the National Solid Waste Management Authority, and the private sector,” he committed.

Besides Montego Bay, the senior lawman said the JCF is planning to roll out similar initiatives in other town centres to maintain order.

Meanwhile, the police have also raised concern about increased reports of breaches of the Noise Abatement Act.

“We are mindful that with the lifting of the COVID restrictions, a number of businesses, to include those in the entertainment industry, have reopened.

“We are of the view that everyone can co-exist if the music is maintained at a level that does not create disturbance and conforms to the provisions of the Act,” Anderson said.

However, the police commissioner said there are instances where the music is played in a loud manner beyond what is acceptable and create disturbance to others.

In these instances, said Anderson, the police “will be enforcing the law”.
