VIDEO: Duplantis thinks he can beat Fraser-Pryce over 100m Loop Jamaica

US-born Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis thinks he can line up and win again five-time World 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

The current world record holder with a height of 6.21m made the statement on Thursday, a day before the world’s best athletes head to Brussels for the Allianz Memorial Van Damme for the final point-scoring opportunity in the 2022 Wanda Diamond League ahead of the series finale next week.

Duplantis didn’t initiate the trash talk. At a press conference ahead of Friday’s Brussels meet, Fraser-Pryce asked the pole vaulter: What would you do against me in a 100m?

“I would beat you,” said Duplantis.

Duplantis competing in a positive wind of 2.1 metres per second in Alexandria, USA, sped to 10.57 on April 26, 2018, which is a 10.67 with zero wind, a time Fraser-Pryce is capable of surpassing.

In Brussels, Fraser-Pryce and her Jamaican compatriot Shericka Jackson – who won the world 100m and 200m titles respectively – will face off over 100m for the third time this year.

Fraser-Pryce is undefeated over 100m this year, but Jackson finished right behind her in Oregon and Monaco.

All six of Fraser-Pryce’s 100m finals this year have been won in sub-10.70 times. If she continues that trend on Friday, she will break the meeting record of 10.72 she has held since 2013.

Other athletes in the field include Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou, who set an African record of 10.72 earlier this year, USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson, and Aleia Hobbs, winner in Lausanne last week when Fraser-Pryce withdrew as a precaution at the last minute.

Duplantis will start as the overwhelming favourite in the men’s pole vault, having been undefeated for the whole of 2022 so far – a streak that includes the World Championships where he increased his world record to 6.21m.

Stan pare. L ap tann nou.

Knight Riders edge Royals by one-run in Women’s CPL opener Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Trinbago Knight Riders scored a nail-biting one-run victory against Barbados Royals in the opening game of the inaugural Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) at Warner Park in St Kitts on Wednesday.

Batting first after winning, Knight Riders got off to a flyer but lost regular wickets to finish on 114 for seven off their allotted 20 overs.

Lee-Ann Kirby top scored for the Knight Riders with a well-fought run-a-ball 30 runs while Deandra Dottin (20 from 15), Hayley Jensen (20 from 18), and Sune Luus (17 from 23) also got into double figures.

Shakera Selman and Hayley Matthews were the picks of the Royals’ bowlers with two wickets apiece. Matthews claimed bragging rights by dismissing her counterpart, Dottin.

The Royals also lost regular wickets during their chase and despite 38 from Chloe Tryon, an innings that included three huge sixes, they replied with 113 for seven, one run short of the victory target.

Kirby added to her batting prowess with two important wickets and was integral to the Knight Riders taking the win, but it was captain Dottin in the final over that sealed the victory and all but booked them a spot in the final.

Kirby and Natasha Mclean started the Knight Riders’ innings strongly before McLean was dismissed for seven by Sheneta Grimmond and Kirby’s run-a-ball 30 came to an end at the hands of young Fatima Sana.

When the partnership of Luus and Dottin was broken, the Royals knew they were in with a chance of keeping the scoring to a minimum and when Matthews, with a heavily strapped right elbow, dismissed Dottin, the Knight Riders suddenly found themselves 80 for four.

They made it past 100 and strong hitting from Jensen, including a 66m six off Matthews, saw them finish 114 for seven.

Matthews and Aaliyah Alleyne both made starts at the top of the innings. The pair raced to 29 before Matthews was caught off Jensen. She was soon followed by Reniece Boyce at the hands of the Geetika Kodali, the hat-trick hero from the inaugural 6ixty.

The asking rate continued to rise with Tryon and Britney Cooper at the crease and, after 10 overs, the Royals needed 69 from 60 with seven wickets in hand.

Tryon took matters into her own hands as she took on Kirby and smashed her for three sixes in an over as she made a dent in the run chase in the 15th over. But a short-pitched delivery in the same over found an outside edge and she had to go for 38.

At 88 for five, the Royals were in all sorts of trouble and the introduction of Anisa Mohammed added to their woes when Chinelle Henry played on and had to go for 12 leaving the Royals 91 for six after 17.

The excitement ramped up when captain Dottin took the ball for the over with the Royals 104 for six and needing 11. She cleaned up Afy Fletcher for eight with the first delivery and had Knight Riders’ fans believing that had all but sealed the victory.

But Qiana Joseph, at just 21-years-old, and having not conceded a boundary off her bowling, dispatched Dottin back over her head to make the equation five off three.

With five needed, Dottin couldn’t find her line and sent down a wide to make it four needed off two and a real nail-biter. To add to the drama, Qiana then slipped as she played her shot, and Sana, who had set off for the run, was nearly run-out.

Qiana, knowing they needed a boundary to win, swung with all her might at the final ball, but couldn’t get the elevation or distance and the Royals fell one run short.

Both teams still have one game to play in the hope of qualifying for Saturday’s final.

The three-team WCPL – Guyana Amazon Warriors being the third team – is being played across four afternoons in St Kitts and Nevis during double-header days before the men’s fixtures in the evening.

1 Dutch, 5 Chinese companies bid to construct Corentyne River bridge

Black Immigrant Daily News

Since the Government has gone out to tender for a company to construct the Corentyne River bridge, a total of six bids have been submitted for the transformational project, including five Chinese bids and one Dutch company also entering the fray.

The bids were opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) on Monday, with the procuring entity being the Ministry of Public Works. Among the Chinese bidders was China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).

Also submitting bids were the State-owned China Road and Bridge Cooperation (CRBC), China Gezhouba Group Company Limited in association with CEIG; China Overseas Engineering Group Co Ltd (COVEC) in association with China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co Ltd (CREEC), and China Railway First Group Co Ltd (CRFG).

China Railway Construction Caribbean Company Limited & China Railway Construction was another Chinese bid that was submitted. Meanwhile, Ballast Nedam, a construction company that is based in The Netherlands, was the lone non-Chinese company that submitted a bid for the project.

Back in May of this year, a US$2 million contract was signed in Suriname for several preliminary studies and research to be conducted on the Corentyne bridge, while a call for Expressions of Interest (EoIs) was simultaneously launched for the construction of the link between the two neighbouring nations.

The Governments of Guyana and Suriname have already decided on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Maintain (DBFOM) model for the Corentyne River bridge that will be constructed via a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) arrangement. It will have a lifespan of 100 years.

The Corentyne River bridge will run approximately 3.1 kilometres, connecting Moleson Creek in Guyana to South Drain in Suriname with a landing on Long Island in the Corentyne River, where a commercial hub and tourist destination will be established.

Running from Moleson Creek to Long Island, the bridge will be a low-level structure, approximately one kilometre long; with a 2200-metre (2.2 km) road across Long Island and a high bridge, spanning 2100 metres (2.1 km) thereafter.

At the high end of the bridge, which will facilitate marine traffic, it will cater for 40,000 to 45,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage) capacity featuring a vertical (height) clearance of 43 metres and a horizonal (width) clearance of about 100 metres.

In addition, both ends of the bridge will have connecting roads. The prioritisation of the bridge across the Corentyne River has been much touted by both President Dr Irfaan Ali and his Surinamese counterpart, President Chandrikapersad Santokhi.

In October 2020, Public Works Ministers Juan Edghill and Dr Riad Nurmohamed had visited the site of the proposed Guyana-Suriname river bridge across the Corentyne River. There were three points of demarcation identified – Moleson Creek, Long Island in the Corentyne River and South Drain in Suriname. Both Ministers planted flags on the Guyana side of the river and then the Suriname side of the river – where the bridge is to be constructed – as well as on Long Island.

Then in February 2021, the Governments of Guyana and Suriname had invited companies to submit EoIs to provide consultancy services for the conduct of a feasibility study and the preparation of detailed designs for the construction of the bridge.

The Corentyne River Bridge will not only link the two neighbouring countries, but also open up access to greater economic opportunities beyond them into French Guiana, and through the road network being developed into Brazil, and eventually further into South America. Moreover, it is anticipated that Long Island will become an economic hub and free zone that will also see major infrastructural development such as hotels, recreational parks, entertainment spots, tourist attractions, malls, and farmers’ markets.
