MP Seecheran tells Deyalsingh: Budget for covid boosters, monkeypox vaccines

Black Immigrant Daily News

Caroni East MP Dr Rishad Seecheran. –

CARONI East MP DR Rishad Seecheran is calling for a budgetary allocation to be made for an adequate supply of monkeypox vaccinations and reformulated covid19 booster shots.

Seecheran reminded his audience at the United National Congress (UNC) Monday night virtual report meeting that covid19 cases are on the rise and monkeypox cases are getting closer to TT.

He said TT should not have a repeat of the 4,100 deaths owing to covid19, and protect citizens at all cost from dying from monkeypox, should it get here.

TT only has access to Sinopharm and Johnson & Johnson covid19 booster shots as all Pfizer vaccines acquired by TT have expired.

Seecheran noted this leaves TT between a rock and a hard place as the Sinopharm is tailored against the original Wuhan strain and not the Omicron BA.5 strain.

“I call on the Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh to make the necessary budgetary allocation for the purchase of an adequate supply of reformulated covid19 booster vaccines from Pfizer or Moderna, pending the regulatory approvals.”

Noting that monkeypox is a global concern, Seecheran suggested Deyalsingh work with the Minister of Foreign Affairs to secure doses of vaccines and therapeutics for the virus from TT’s allies in the US or European Union.

He warned against relying on the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for the indicative order of 2000 vaccines, with no arrival date, which can only vaccinate 1,000 people.

“Vaccines must be sourced to protect our citizens.”

Deyalsingh, Seecheran said, must also state his views on fractional dosing approach endorsed by US and EU regulators. This method entails using one vial of the drug via an intradermal injection to administer to five people, as a short-term measure to protect at-risk individuals while the supply of the vaccine remains limited.

Losing 10 lbs in two weeks: “I feel amazing,” reader says Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

Readers are asked to note that Op-eds do not necessarily reflect the opinions or beliefs of Loop Cayman.

by ‘Happy’

Stuffing my face with food was fun for a while. It stopped being exciting, however, when I gained so much weight that I could not fit into my clothes or pass by an object without some part of me knocking it over. Eventually, my new weight gains not only affected my coordination and wardrobe, but my self-esteem. Fearing that things could get out of control, I decided to make a change. I adjusted what I ate, along with my mealtimes. It changed my life.

Changes

After two weeks of eating better, my mind was more alert, I was thinking clearly and focused. I noticed this both at work and in my personal life.

At my job, for example, I was executing tasks quicker and was more organised. I also accepted more responsibility and additional work.

For once, I was happy to be at work rather than feeling trapped there until “5:00” doing mindless tasks. I also realised that it was not the job that was making me frustrated and unhappy all the time, but, instead, how I felt about myself, which impacted how I felt about everything else, including work.

Socially, the weight loss earned me compliments. People wanted to know what I was doing to make my body look so good. They wanted to know the secret.

The secret

The secret, I found, was simple.

First, I decided that the weight in my twenties was my target weight (yours may be different).

Then I changed my consumption from greasy food and products with high carbohydrates, high sugar and high fat to a mix of greens, low sugar, low fat, low carbohydrates and sufficient protein.

Lastly, I adjusted my sleeping habits, sleeping for more hours each night.

These changes, combined with smaller portions of food at lunch and dinner and exercising lightly (at first), resulted in a loss of 10 pounds in two weeks (I felt amazing seeing and feeling the results).

Now, in your case, your body composition and height could be different from mine. You may also have underlying health issues which restrict you from eating certain foods or even exercising. I mention this because these distinctions may contribute to different outcomes.

For example, the Mayo Clinic says that “In some people, obesity can be traced to a medical cause, such as Prader-Willi syndrome, Cushing syndrome and other conditions.”

Medical problems, such as arthritis, also can lead to decreased activity, which may result in weight gain.

Some medications can lead to weight gain if you don’t compensate through diet or activity. These medications include some antidepressants, anti-seizure medications, diabetes medications, antipsychotic medications, steroids and beta blockers.

The Mayo Clinic explains further.

In addition, the Mayo Clinic noted that there may be “genetic, behavioral, metabolic and hormonal influences on body weight” which may impact weight.

Therefore, before adjusting your diet or embark on any programme, you should check with your doctor to highlight any concerns with your plans.

Once you find what works for you, it can make all the difference for you mentally, socially and physically. A new, healthier lifestyle that it is a good fit for you.

Two Boxers To Compete At Schoolboys Tournament In Guyana – St. Lucia Times News

Two young boxers will represent Saint Lucia at the 5th Annual Winfield Braithwaite Caribbean Schoolboys & Junior Boxing Tournament, which will be held in Georgetown, Guyana, from August 26-28, 2022.

They are lightweight boxer Herve Charlemagne, 14, and middleweight boxer Kevert Similien, 17. The two young boxers left the island for Guyana on Wednesday morning (August 24) where they will join National Head Boxing Coach, Conrad Fredericks.

The tournament will be held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall daily from 6:00 p.m., and participating countries are Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, The Bahamas, and Saint Lucia.

President of the St. Lucia Boxing Association (SLBA), David “Shakes” Christopher, says Saint Lucia has competed at every edition of the tournament.

“This tournament has been a major stomping ground for the St. Lucia Boxing Association, especially for boxers like Nathan Ferrari, Kareem Boyce, Gilchrist Medard, to name a few,” said Christopher.

“Most of the young boxers who came through the ranks went to this tournament, where they really developed their craft. We’ve also always won medals at this championship. This is a very good stepping stone for our young boxers. So we want to wish our two young boxers the best at the tournament.”

National Head Boxing Coach, Conrad Fredericks, said young Saint Lucian boxers have always showed great effort at the Guyana tournament over the years.

“In the last year we competed in the tournament, we had two boxers and placed third overall among seven teams,” Fredericks said. “Only three of those countries won gold medals, including Saint Lucia, which won one gold and one silver medal.”

Fredericks added: “It’s a very tough tournament, but I always appreciate our young boxers competing because the standard is high. Our two boxers representing the island this year are relatively new to the sport, and it’s their first tournament. However, we will try our best to medal at the tournament.”

Assistant Coach, Hilary Dalson, said the two youngsters show great promise and he’s confident that they will give a good account of themselves in Guyana.

“Herve is very technical, and, in the ring, he uses all the technical skills that Coach Conrad and I train him to use. Kevert is more of a brawler type fighter. So I’m expecting great things from them in this tournament,” Dalson explained.

Dalson noted that the boxing programme at the Vigie Boxing Gym caters to male and female boxers – both juniors and seniors. He issued a call for more people to take up the sport.

“I wish more youths would show up at the boxing gym,” Dalson said. “We don’t have that many youths showing up consistently. But it’s a very good boxing programme we run here and you’ll see the fruits of it at this tournament. We also definitely need more female fighters coming to the gym. Whether they want to participate or not, we provide the training they need for the sport.”

Meanwhile, Charlemagne, the younger of the two boxers, stated that he gets inspiration from former British boxer Naseem Hamed alias Prince Naseem, who competed from 1992 to 2002, and held multiple featherweight world championships, including the WBO title from 1995 to 2000. Charlemagne joined the gym in November last year and is anxiously looking forward to his first bout.

“So far, I think I’m more physically fit and have seen much improvement compared to when I first joined the gym,” he said. “For this tournament, I’m just looking to go out and do my best. I want to win, but also want to give a great performance.”

The SLBA thanks everyone who has made it possible for our boxers’ participation at this year’s tournament, especially given the hike in airfares. Therefore, we thank Leslie Clarke from Domino’s Pizza, Dr. Stephen King, Baron Foods Ltd., 1st National Bank, Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, National Lotteries Authority. Special thanks also to Joseph “Reds” Perreira, former SLBA President, for his efforts in making it all happen.
