Following the detection of the first case of monkeypox in Guyana, Education Minister Priya Manickchand has made it clear that there is no need to close schools.

Speaking with reporters today, Minister Manickchand contended that the total shutdown of schools is not a move that the PPP/C administration will ever want to embark upon again.

“We learnt from Covid-19 that schools must be the last place to close and the first place to open because too much gets lost…when schools close,” the Minister expressed.

In addition to the significant learning loss experienced by children, she explained that many pupils contended with malnourishment during the closure of schools as a result of school feed programmes being halted amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

In addition, she contended that many children suffered abuse in various forms during this period.

“The damage is way too big when we close schools. We don’t have any intention of ever closing schools again. Whether circumstances in the world will dictate that, is something that we will have to watch and see. What I do know is that we’re in a better place to respond to school closures now,” Minister Manickchand posited.

“We expect to open all our schools as normal for September 5,” she added.

According to the Education Minister, all schools across the country as properly equipped to keep stakeholders safe.

“We have for the first time in the country, all schools with handwashing facilities, running water, soap and other facilities to keep ourselves clean and sanitised,” she reasoned, noting that measures are also in place to keep students properly distanced in the learning environment.

Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony has said that the country does not anticipate many cases of monkeypox on local shores.

“Monkeypox is relatively rare, we only have one case now in Guyana, the patient is very stable, and in the next 14 days, that patient should be discharged, once everything goes well. So, we don’t expect a lot of cases,” he had expressed.

On Monday, it was announced that a 57-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) tested positive for monkeypox; he is currently isolated at the Infectious Diseases Hospital.

Ringtone states WI Kulcha Mexico 70 will be ‘compensated’ Loop Barbados

Jarrell Fenton, alias Ringtone, the CEO of WI Kulcha, has delivered on his promise to issue a statement about the Mexico trip today, but it has fallen very short of the mark in the eyes of patrons and others who are following this melee.

In his highly-anticipated statement, he tweeted:

“Sincere and heartfelt apologies to our Mexico trip patrons, the experience on the recently concluded trip fell short of the world-class service we aim to provide.

“As was mentioned in an earlier statement, the death of the wife of WI Kulch’s local concierge service provider, on the first day of the trip, caused him to pull out and left us in a difficult position.

We leaned heavily on our local concierge because of the language barrier.

“Moving forward:

We’ll be communicating directly with our Mexico trip patrons to start the compensation process. We’ll be rebuilding our company processes from the ground up to ensure something like this can never happen again.

“I apologise again to our Mexico trip patrons and will be working tirelessly on the compensation process.”

And the top four issues that readers on Twitter had with the statement were, ‘Why is it only on Twitter?’, ‘Compensation not refund?’, ‘Why was everything dependent on one person?’ and ‘That’s it? No more information after calling reviews and recaps by patrons lies? No Twitter Space to be held?’

Why is your concierge service for a trip of 70 persons not a reputable business with multiple employees?

One person who was going off the vibe from Jet Lag, the only party to come off “successfully” in Mexico, was upset that the Bali trip is being promoted on Instagram and none of the apology or statements posts are on any of the other WI Kulcha socials. “Agreed post it on insta too. I almost pre book the Bali trip”.

Some quote tweets in response to the CEO’s statement issued today, August 24, 2022, at 11:25 am, include:

“It’s very weird that they’re only addressing this on Twitter. If you follow them on any other platform, you’d think the trip was a success. Shady business through and through.”

“Why are these statements only on Twitter. Is it on IG you did most of your advertising? Hmm”

“This and nothing is the same tbh”

“Ummm question tho… Are you gunna address the things you were “extremely disheartened by” Specifically the “exaggerations” “sensationalizing” and “the lies regarding certain events” orrrr nah? Asking for me..”

Moving forward where?

“Lol. He didn’t say refund. Imagine if the compensation is a discount on the Bali trip or free WiKulcha gear”

“Why is your concierge service for a trip of 70 persons not a reputable business with multiple employees? Why is it just Pablo?”

“This is exactly the same statement already released with more spacing. This doesn’t address any of the logistical failures. The change in accommodation should have been communicated in advance, the excursion bookings should have been confirmed before arrival. This is flat.”

“The wildest thing is that if you don’t use Twitter and you follow this brand you would have no idea about all of this think he slick”

“So Risk Management was never considered? You cannot tell me that one person pulling out caused so much mess on the trip. Better make that compensation process a smooth one! And pls… Moving forward? Where? Mwen menm ?k sa!”

And some people did specifically hone in on the fact that Fenton hopes to bounce back from this. Many asked, “Moving fowardddddddd?????” and “Moving forward where?”

In just about two hours the statement tweet has amassed 196 quote tweets.

Artist Behind AI Rapper FN Meka Criticized Capital Records: ‘That’s Karma’

Black Immigrant Daily News

The rapper behind the voice of short-lived Artificial Intelligence rapper FN Meka is speaking out.

Kyle The Hooligan, who says he was the original voice behind FN Meka is accusing Capital Records of cutting him out of a deal and call the downfall of the virtual artist, “karma.” On Tuesday afternoon, Capitol dropped FN Meka, the first robot rapper the label boasted that it signed two weeks ago. The label took the measure after news of the signing on Monday led to major backlash, particularly from the black community, which felt that the virtual rapper’s use of the n-word should be checked, especially if the person behind the Artificial Intelligent being is not black.

Capital Records issued a full apology for offending people as the music released used racist slurs. The AI, which used a human voice to record its raps, had released a new song via Capitol called “Florida Water,” featuring Atlanta rapper Gunna. The label boasted that the AI entity already had millions of fans on Tik Tok and even a larger amount of views on Spotify.

In the statement, the label said it had failed to make the appropriate checks and investigations before signing on to the project. As a result, Capital “severed ties with the FN Meka project, effective immediately.”

“We offer our deepest apologies to the Black community for our insensitivity in signing this project without asking enough questions about equity and the creative process behind it. We thank those who have reached out to us with constructive feedback in the past couple of days — your input was invaluable as we came to the decision to end our association with the project.”

Right after the news went viral that the AI artist secured a label deal and was dropping a song, there was an immediate backlash as many accused the label of using the AI entity to make money, so they don’t have to pay real rappers royalties.

Some also pointed out that black artists have difficulty landing a deal and label backing, especially in a black-founded and driven genre like hip hop.

A pro-black group that is focused on equity in music, Industry Blackout, also found the entire thing racist and offensive as the AI fashioned its speech and mannerisms after black artists. However, it’s unclear if a black person is behind it.

“We find fault in the lack of awareness in how offensive this caricature is. It is a direct insult to the Black community and our culture. An amalgamation of gross stereotypes, appropriative mannerisms that derive from Black artists, complete with slurs infused in lyrics,” Industry Blackout wrote in an open letter posted to social media.

FN Meka was created by Factory New which has a listed founder, Anthony Martini, a Caucasian man. Some Twitter users were not pleased about that information as many referred to the AI as “Digital Blackface”- a white person profiting from black art where otherwise black people continue to suffer from using the same lyrics the AI uses.

Some discussed the current case of collaborators Gunna and Young Thug, who are facing life in jail if convicted on RICO charges. A lot of the evidence proffered by prosecutors comes from their song lyrics.

Martini said in a New York Times article that the AI personality is voiced by a human- “he’s a Black guy,” he said and defended the AI invention as “not this malicious plan of white executives. It’s literally no different from managing a human artist, except that it’s digital.”

He also said that the team behind FN Meka is “actually one of the most diverse teams you can get — I’m the only white person involved.”

Martini did admit, however, that the whole thing, when taken out of context, is worse than it was intended.

Kyle The Hooligan says this is their karma as he spoke out on Instagram.

“So everything going good,” Kyle said. “Next thing I know, n***as just ghosted me. Use my voice, use my sound, use the culture and literally just left me high and dry. I ain’t get a dime off of nothing, and they got record deals, all this stuff. I wasn’t involved in no meetings or none of that, which is f***ed up. So, I’m glad they a*s got canceled ‘cause that’s karma for they a*s ‘cause God don’t play with me. I’m gonna tell you that right now.”

Irv Gotti Talks About Kissing Ashanti, Accused Of Harassment & Predatory Behavior

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

Irv Gotti getting some heat from Ashanti fans after he shared some intimate details into their past relationship on Murder Inc. Story.

Irv Gotti seems to have lots of stories about Ashanti as he discloses in his Murder Inc documentary another intimate moment between him and the “Baby” singer. While sitting on a burgundy settee, the 52-year-old Gotti appears calm and happy as he recalls falling in love with Ashanti while they worked together and eventually sneaking a kiss and butt grab of the “Foolish” artist.

“I’m on my own and Ashanti is coming to the studio every day and our friendship and bond is naturally growing. And she used to wear these juicy sweats and her ass was looking fat, her ass was looking great,” he says, laughing.

“And so one day I was like, ‘yo I’m taking you home’, she said ‘bet cool’ we’re walking to the front door of her crib, she turns to say goodbye, and I just kissed her and grabbed her ass,” he says as he mimicked the motion he did. “It was like, what took you long,” he added.

Gotti’s latest rambling about Ashanti is not sitting well with fans of the singer as this is the second story he has given about the artist in recent weeks.

Irv Gotti, earlier this month, alleged that she and Ashanti had a sexual relationship during her time at the label. In a Drink Champs interview earlier this month, the Murder Inc. co-founder claimed that they made the song ‘Happy” after having sex.

“We just finished sleeping together, or whatever, I’m taking a shower. I’m in the shower, you know, a n****a be creative after [sex] … I think of the whole track in the shower,” he says as he sings the melodies of the song.

“Okay, now it’s time for you to write. Yo, I want the sh*t to be a feel-good joint, like summertime,” he goes on. “The energy, that record came about ’cause of our energy.”

Gotti claimed that their “relationship” helped her career. The label exec has been getting dragged by fans who reminded him that he was married at the time. Ashanti has never addressed Irv Gotti or any of the claims. Gotti also previously shared that he was hurt when he found out that Ashanti and Nelly were dating and that he found out about them while watching a sports event on TV.

Meanwhile, fans criticized the former Murder Inc. boss for his behavior towards Ashanti.

“Seeing the internet realize that 50 Cent was right about Irv Gotti this whole time brings me so much joy,” one person wrote.

“I had NO IDEA Ashanti was being preyed on like this. And the fact that he’s being given the space to speak on her like this is unacceptable,” another said.

“What he is doing is sexual harassment, its disgusting, its predatory and he doesn’t give a fuck. Who knows the blackballing he did behind the scenes to her. Im sick of Irv Gotti, he needs his ass beat,” another person said.

“[Irv Gotti] is a sexual harasser, and gross. There should be a law against what he’s doing to [Ashanti] it’s just not right. She did NOTHING to deserve this ogre talking about and treating her like this. I don’t care who he is!! A woman deserves RESPECT!! #IrvGotti,” another said.

Villa resident finds flare gun apparently thrown over her fence during early-morning police raid

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

A Villa woman found a gun in her yard and reported the matter to the Police immediately.

Reports are that the woman notified the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) that, at about 7:15 a.m. on August 22, her seven-year-old son came to her with a certain report. As a result, she went into her yard, where she saw a black gun.

Upon examination by the Police, it was confirmed to be a flare gun.

The woman recounts that, earlier that morning, the Police had gone to her neighbour’s home, and at the time she had heard the sounds of loud rapping and shouts of “Police! Police!”

A few minutes later, she says, she heard something fall into her yard.

The Police have taken the flare gun into their possession as investigations into the matter continue.

Last month, a Herberts man reported that a flare gun, along with four flare Para shoots and four hand flares, had been stolen from his chartered fishing vessel between July 28 and 29.

He said he had secured the 28-foot boat at Jolly Harbour and gone home. Upon his return he discovered that the vessel had been ransacked and the gun and corresponding items were missing.

Monkeypox: Guyana working to acquire vaccines, medicines

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

Following the detection of the country’s first case of monkeypox on Monday, health authorities are working to acquire treatment regimens as well as vaccines to combat the disease.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony explained that the vaccines that protect against monkeypox are in limited quantity globally. However, through an agreement with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), Guyana should receive some of these vaccines by the end of September.

“We have placed an order with PAHO and we are expecting that we would get some of those vaccines by the end of September, so persons who have been exposed to anyone with monkeypox can get vaccinated.”

“The supply of these vaccines is very limited and it’s a very scarce commodity right now in the world, nevertheless we are trying to get some doses into Guyana,” he said.

Moreover, the Health Minister noted that medication is available to treat the monkeypox infection but this is also in scarce supply. Nevertheless, he said Guyana is working to acquire these medications.

“There are very few medications that are currently available to treat the virus per say. Right now, they are working on three different antiretroviral, they are in limited supplies in the United States and they are being used under emergency use authorisation.”

“So, the medications that are currently used to the suppress the virus is not readily available but once it becomes available, we will ensure that we have some of it available to patients here in Guyana, but right now we can’t get access to it,” the Minister explained.

As it stands, patients with monkeypox are treated based on their symptoms.

“The treatment for these persons when they get infected would be symptomatic, therefore, if they have fever, we’ll treat fever, if they have an enlarged lymph node, we’ll treat that,” the Minister noted, noting that most patients recover within 14-21 days.

“Most people who get infected, within 21 days, they would be fine. There are very, very few examples where they can develop some complications and that is because of secondary bacterial infection, so on top of the monkeypox, they might get another bacteria invading the lesions that they have and creating an additional disease, so we have to mindful of that when treating patients with monkeypox,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Minister highlighted that there are various ways in which the virus can be transmitted directly or indirectly.

“Basically, monkeypox is transmitted from animals to humans, so if there is an infected animal and a person comes in contact with them, they can get infected, so that’s the first form of transmission.

“And then you can have human to human contact, so that’s the second major form of transmission. In terms of the human-to-human contact, that can be done in two ways; one what we may call a direct contact meaning if you are in close proximity with someone who has been infected then you can get the virus. If [you are caring] for somebody who is infected, touching the lesions, cleaning the lesions, not using protective gear, then you can get infected.”

“Then you have indirect contact, because they have found that monkeypox can be on surfaces so if somebody who has monkeypox in a ward, for example, and you go and you don’t have on gloves and you touch surfaces, the chances are, you can come in contact with the virus,” he further explained.

A 57-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) is the country’s first monkeypox patient. He is currently at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Lilliendaal, Greater Georgetown.

‘They Need To Stop Making Mothers Cry’ – St. Lucia Times News

A Desruisseaux, Micoud woman whose only son was gunned down as he was about to enter the family home on Tuesday night, has appealed to young people to put down their guns and settle whatever differences they may have peacefully.

“We need to stop. We need to stop making the mothers cry,” a grieving Diane Pamphile told St Lucia Times.

Diane spoke hours after her son Karch Pamphile succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

The mother recalled that she was already sleeping when she heard the sound of gunshots, only to be told shortly afterward by her sister’s husband that her son, who turned 26 last week, was the target.

“He called me and said ‘Look they killed your son on the ground’. When I came out of my house I saw my son on the ground in front of my doorstep,” Diane stated.

She said Karch, the only son among her two children, was about to enter the house.

Diane, who described Karch as a ‘mommy’s boy’ who worked with her, said she was not aware that he had any issues with anyone.

“Honestly I just don’t know what is happening. I don’t know. I don’t know why young people have to resort to violence. They can just resolve differences. Why everything has to be gun violence?” She lamented.

Diane revealed that her deceased son was the father of a six-month-old baby.

So far for the year, Saint Lucia has recorded 44 homicides.
