NADS Official Urges Implementation Of Demerit System For Errant Drivers – St. Lucia Times News

The Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Driving Schools (NADS), believes implementing a demerit system for errant drivers could help reduce road accidents.

Kingson Jean explained that the driving licence demerit system has been on the law books in Saint Lucia for many years.

And he believes that with its implementation a lot of individuals would be careful how they drive on the roads, knowing that they would attract demerits for traffic offences.

“No one wants to lose their driver’s licence or have their driver’s licence suspended,” Jean told St Lucia Times.

He feels that the implementation of the demerit system should be expedited, resulting in improved road safety.

The NADS official said he was not sure what was holding up the process.

“I think that’s a question for the Chief Transport Officer to answer,” Jean told St Lucia Times.

However, he told St Lucia Times he believes the problem lies with the courts and the Transport Department.

“If the courts find people guilty for traffic offences that information has to go to the Chief Transport Officer so she could have those points deducted from the person’s licence,” Jean stated.

“I am not so certain if the system is at Transport and they can deduct those points now,” he told St Lucia Times.

The NADS Public Relations Officer spoke against the backdrop of  concerns over a spate of road accidents that have claimed the lives of fourteen people so far this year.

Las condiciones del tiempo se espera que estén tranquilas en horas de la mañana

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV

Guyanese escapes from immigration custody in BVI

Ianna Thomas

Bviplatinum.com: British Virgin Islands Deputy Chief Immigration Officer Nadia Demming-Hodge has advised the public to be on the lookout for Guyanese national Ianna Thomas, who reportedly escaped from the department’s temporary detention facility at Hotel Castle Maria on Monday, August 22.

“According to Mrs. Demming-Hodge, Ms. Thomas remains at large, and a search is underway to recapture the detainee. The public is urged to be on the lookout, and contact the Immigration Department in the event that Ms. Thomas is sighted.”

This has been stated in a press release from Government of the Virgin Islands.

Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of Ms. Thomas is asked to contact the Immigration Department at 468-4705, 468-4717, 468-4715, 468-4754, or the RVIPF hotline at 311.

The BVI continues to see an influx of illegal immigrants. While they do land in the BVI, historically, most of the illegal immigrants are on their way to the United States. However, once they are captured by local authorities, the responsibility is on the BVI to provide services, and eventually arrange for their repatriation to their home country.

A detention centre had been built to house immigration detainees in the compound of Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsum’s Ghut, but the facility is now being used by the prison. Late last year, then Minister for Immigration, Hon. Vincent Wheatley, alluded to the need to build a detention centre for illegal immigrants, pointing to the cost to taxpayers.

In recent months, the Immigration Department has had to seek the public’s help, as detainees have found ways to escape from local hotels where they are usually held

NGP Leader: ‘I Would Like To See People Punished For Their Corruption’ – St. Lucia Times News

The leader of Saint Lucia’s National Green Party (NGP), Andre ‘Pancho’ de Caires, has welcomed the Special Prosecutor Act, declaring it is a step in the right direction.

“A man steals a bag of rice in the supermarket to feed his family – it is worth five dollars and he gets held and put in jail,” de Caires told St Lucia Times.

“Yet politicians seem to be ripping off the country in tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and sometimes millions of dollars, and nothing seems to happen to them,” the NGP leader observed.

He hoped that everyone guilty of corruption would ‘face the music.’

“I would like to see people punished for their corruption. But until politicians get punished it will continue,” de Caires asserted.

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre recently secured the support of the country’s legislators in the House of Assembly for the Special Prosecutor Act.

This legislation empowers an attorney-at-law appointed by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission to serve as Special Prosecutor.

It also authorises the office holder to receive complaints and investigate credible reports of corrupt conduct by incumbent public officials and public officials who have demitted office.
