Tropical wave in Eastern Atlantic, direction is towards Caribbean Loop Cayman Islands

The National Hurricane Center is reporting a tropical wave located a few hundred miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands.

According to the NHC, the tropical wave continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms, with the map suggesting a trajectory towards the Caribbean.

Regarding its potential for development, the NHC said that environmental conditions could support some slow development of this system while it moves westward to west-northwestward at around 10 to 15 mph across the tropical Atlantic during the next several days.

While the chance formation through the next five days is low (at 20 per cent), residents should remain vigilant of this development. In particular, it may be a good time for companies in the Cayman Islands to test their hurricane preparedness plans and for individuals to consider joining community emergency response teams within their neighbourhood or district (community emergency response teams are members of each community who are trained by Hazard Management Cayman Islands for disaster preparedness and risk management before, during and after disasters). More information on community emergency response teams can be found on the following link: https://www.caymanprepared.gov.ky/cert.

UPP Confirms Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon as its Replacement Candidate for St. Mary’s South

Black Immigrant Daily News

By overwhelming majority, the General Council of the United Progressive Party (UPP) has confirmed Kelvin “Shugy” Simon as its new candidate for the St. Mary’s South Constituency.

On Sunday night, August 21, the Council ratified decisions taken by the Party’s Executive Committee earlier this month, retiring previous candidate Corthwright Marshall out of concern for his health and recommending Simon, who emerged the front-runner in its constituency polls.

Simon, in a brief acceptance speech, indicated that his interest in politics was sparked since 2004.  He said he is humbled by his selection as a Candidate for the UPP, the Party he has long admired, and, accordingly, is inspired and motivated to get his campaign going.

A professional guidance counselor, Simon is a former national athlete and an entrepreneur whose roots are firmly established in the community of St. Mary’s South.

Described as “a charismatic community organizer,” he believes that great leaders are honed by serving the needs of the people.  Accordingly, he is the co-founder of “Project Bolans,” a group formed out of love for the community and the desire to see it move in a positive direction.

Political Leader Harold Lovell says that “Simon is ready to roll up his sleeves and do the hard work that is needed in St. Mary’s South.  He is determined to help tackle the neglect of the young people, the spiralling cost of living, and the other challenges that are making life tough – not only for his constituents, but for too many Antiguans and Barbudans.”

Lovell adds that he and his colleagues welcome Simon to the slate, and the Party will be putting out its best efforts to ensure that he covers the most ground in the shortest possible time.

Meanwhile, the UPP salutes Brother Marshall for the sterling work he has done in the constituency these many years, and it reiterates its pledge to support him on his journey to recovery and good health.

With skill sets across various disciplines, including law, tourism, economics and agriculture, Marshall is earmarked to play  a major role in the UPP Administration, the Political Leader says.

Stabilisation roadworks to resume in Chatham Monday

Black Immigrant Daily News

A landslip is currently threatening a portion of the Southern Main Road in Chatham Village.

Point Fortin MP Kennedy Richards Jr has assured his constituents that stabilisation work on a massive landslip along the Southern Main Road in Chatham Village is set to resume on Monday if there is no rain.

Several residents have been complaining that landslips on both sides of the road are worsening. It is unsafe, they say, for any car to pass on the narrow remaining strip of the road. They fear that “at any time now,” they could be cut off from the rest of Trinidad and Tobago.

Richards said, “It could happen, but no one knows if or when that could happen.

“The work is getting done. I know that they are frightened, and I am frightened too. Trying to upgrade the road, we must not lose a soul. While I am scared, I must trust the engineers to do their jobs. Kennedy is the remedy, but that does not mean things would be easy.

“The Government is spending upwards of $10 million on this site. This is to ensure that the southwestern peninsula does not get cut off from the rest of the country. The work must be done properly. People are anxious, and I am just as anxious.”

The MP recalled that a contractor had recently started stabilisation work on one side of the road, then stopped because soil-testing results showed that the other side of the road also needed work. That caused a change in the original scope of the project.

He said the change in design to fix both sides, and the bad weather caused a delay in the restart of the work.

Richards said he was being kept abreast of the project and was working to have the problems fixed. The contractor and the Works and Transport Ministry have been working with WASA on the updated design.

A landslip is currently threatening a portion of the Southern Main Road in Chatham Village. –

Richards said, “After this landslip is fixed, there are more 19 remaining from there straight to Icacos. I checked them myself. I spoke to (Works and Transport Minister Rohan) Sinanan, who is willing to help. But he is dealing with 450 landslips throughout the country. Every time he fixes one, he gets two more. That is the challenge we have in the country.

“So while he is working to remedy the situation, others parts are getting damaged. The Government has been supporting wherever it could. If we had more money, we would have had more done.”

Richards said he was also trying to identify alternative routes like an old Ministry of Works road that connects Buenos Ayers, Erin, to Chatham Road South. But that road also has a landslip.

A statement from the PURE Unit of the ministry said construction works on the southern landslip were set to restart on August 2. But there were further land movements owing to the bad weather over the past few weeks.

The statement added that work on the site was set to restart on Monday and is expected to finish by the end of November.

One resident, Rikki Undheim, said the road is the only access route to other parts of Cedros.

“Villagers are waiting for the whole southwest to be isolated from the country. This is the worst I have ever seen this landslip. It was already bad, but after the contractor cleared down the bamboo trees holding up the road, it got worse,” Undheim said.

“God forbid someone is on the road when the road gives in. We are frustrated. There are numerous bad roads in Cedros and other parts of TT. But ours are unsafe, and lives are at risk.”

3 questioned as over $3M fraud unearthed at Nand Persaud Rice Company

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

Three persons have been questioned after police were called in to investigate an alleged fraud committed at a rice company on the Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

This was after the management of the company reportedly discovered 16 fraudulent transactions committed on the company between April 18 and 28 June 2022, totaling in excess of $3.7M.

This publication understands that credit to the tune of $3,777,526 was taken from the company in the name of a rice farmer from Black Bust Polder.

Authorisations were presented to the company for fertilizer and spare parts totaling that amount.

Two individuals; both from Port Mourant –another village on the Corentyne, claimed they were given authorisation letters by the farmer and also presented a copy on his National Identification (ID) card.

One of the men is the owner of a lorry and the other owns a car.

Meanwhile, after staff at Nand Persaud Group of Companies Number 36 Village outlet became suspicious, they requested that the farmer present himself and refused to issue the requested spare parts.

When contacted the farmer indicated that he has not authorised anyone to collect fertiliser nor spare parts on his behalf.

A senior manager at Nand Persaud Group of Companies explained that the police were called in while the company conducted its own investigation.

Meanwhile, the two men who allegedly took the authorisations to the company and uplifted spare parts and fertilizer implicated a third person indicating that they were hired by that man. The third person implicated is also from Port Mourant.

According to the rice farmer, he was contacted by the ‘mastermind’ who pretended to be a government official and was going to assist him to get fertilizer from the $1B assistance to farmers as announced earlier this year.

He explained that he also gave the man information about his credit limit at Nand Persaud and details on arrangements with the milling company.

Police have since arrested the three men from Port Mourant but they have been released on station bail. According to an officer close to the investigation, there are waiting on a report from a handwriting export before sending a file on the matter to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Agriculture: CARICOM Secretary-General Urges Youth To ‘Get Involved’ – St. Lucia Times News

CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett, emphasising that there are excellent opportunities in ‘new agriculture’ for young people, has urged them to get involved.

“This is the time and the opportunity to say to our young people, get involved. The opportunities in the agricultural sector are there to be taken up and there are gaps which you can bring your new thinking to create further opportunities for yourselves,” the CARICOM official asserted.

Barnett was addressing last week’s opening of the Trinidad and Tobago Agri Investment Forum and Expo.

She explained that ‘smart agriculture’ goes beyond planting and growing systems that incorporate new technologies.

In this regard, Barnett noted that there is a growing demand for, among other things – online platforms, extension apps, agricultural marketing apps, drone operators, data analytics, and crop forecast apps.

And she wanted all hands on deck to achieve the food and nutrition security vision, particularly the target of reducing food imports by 25 percent by 2025.

“There is a role for all to play. This is our Region. Our participation and support matter,” Barnett asserted.

She said spreading the word was crucial.

In addition, the CARICOM Secretary-General spoke of the need to encourage everyone to support agricultural commodities the region produces.

“Plant your own backyard gardens; invest in the agricultural value chain. We all have to champion the vision of regional food and nutrition security,” Barnett declared.
