In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Works and Transport announced that the pedestrian crossings located at Dock Road, Port of Spain, and the intersection of the wig-wag lights between London Street and Dock Road, Port of Spain will be permanently closed on August 20.

Rohee seeks to bring professionalism to GECOM

New GECOM Commissioner Clement Rohee

Newly appointed Commissioner of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Clement Rohee, is looking to enhance the professionalism of the electoral body.

Rohee, a former Home Affairs Minister and a People’s Progressive Party stalwart, was sworn in as a government-nominated commissioner at GECOM this morning by President Dr Irfaan Ali. He replaced former commissioner, Bibi Shadick, who passed away on Saturday last at the age of 76.

Speaking with reporters after taking his Oath of Office, Rohee explained that having witnessed the tumultuous 2020 General and Regional Elections, there are some priority areas at GECOM that needs to be addressed.

“…The electoral machinery, being extremely professional not only in its composition but also in the conduct of its mandate, pofessionalism in GECOM, as it is in any institution that has to do with good governance and democracy, is extremely important. And I would want to help to make a contribution to ensuring that the staff is…,” he stated.

Rohee added, “So, we need to have staff that reflects what Guyana looks like and this is going to be extremely important.”

Asked whether that reflection is related to the ethnic make-up of the GECOM staff, the newly sworn-in Commissioner had this to say: “I’m speaking about, fundamentally, the professional face of GECOM. It doesn’t necessarily mean the ethnic composition. You can have a multi-ethnic composition of GECOM but the fact is that they all have to present a professional face to the public not only in terms of image but also in terms of what they do, in terms of the concrete activities in the public domain.”

“So, it’s also going to be important for the staff to be professional in the conduct of the activities and the attitude towards people as well. So, the face of GECOM, it’s not so much the commissioners, it’s more the staff because on the ground it is the staff that represents GECOM.”

Rohee, a former Member of Parliament, had served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1992 to 2001, Minister of Trade from 2001 to 2006, and Home Affairs Minister from 2006 to 2015.

He also served as the PPP/C General Secretary from 2013 to 2017.

President Ali expressed confidence that Rohee’s experience, both at the national level and in elections, would help to strengthen GECOM.

“He is no stranger in his pursuit of free and fair elections, democracy and building a country in which the rule of law defines our action and who we are as a people… I’m sure that with his experience, not only at the national level but his previous experience at the Election Commission, will bring great value to the work of the Commission. It would help to strengthen the Commission and, definitely, will benefit our country as a whole,” the Head of State posited.

Meanwhile, GECOM Chair, Justice Retired Claudette Singh, said Rohee will fit in on the Election Commission since he has institutional knowledge and experience in politics.

DVRP Celebrates Opening Of Volet Bridge – St. Lucia Times News

With the completion of the Volet Bridge, drivers of the vehicles that traverse the East Coast Highway over 57,000 times a day can now enjoy a roadway that is more climate resilient.

The bridge, located at Micoud, was constructed to replace the previous culvert to allow the Volet River to safely flow under the highway.

The old culvert failed when the river overflowed its banks during the extreme rains of the 2013 Christmas Eve Trough, resulting in the highway being cut in two.

While an emergency repair allowed for reopening of the highway, flooding continued to plague the area during heavy rainfall events, impacting this transportation lifeline and surrounding farmlands. Without intervention, the culvert would have eventually failed again.

The new Volet Bridge, funded via the DVRP, was carefully designed to ensure maximum flood resilience and durability. Construction started in April 2021 and the certificate of completion was issued on May 17, 2022.

Key Features

Designs informed by community consultations and hydrologic and hydraulic analyses of the Volet River watershed
Approximately 16-meter-long, 4-meter-high reinforced concrete right portal bridge, designed to accommodate a 50-year rainfall event; such an event historically has a 2% chance of occurring in any given year
The scope of works included riverbank protection before and after the bridge

The initiative complements earlier works under the DVRP to rehabilitate and enhance the Highway section at Canelles which also collapsed during the 2013 Christmas Eve Trough, claiming the lives of two persons.

Gobernador dice no es justo comparar privatización de Puertos con LUMA Energy

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV

Omarion Details Raz-B Triggered By J Boog, Speak On Mental Health

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

Omarion has released a new book in which he speaks about an incident where fellow member J-Boog taunted Raz-B over Raz’s previous allegations that their manager Chris Stokes had raped him.

Omarion’s book is an audiobook called ‘Unbothered: The Power of Choosing Joy,’ and chapter 3 will be released on September 13, 2022, which shows an emotional moment by Raz-B after J-Boog mocks his sexual assault allegations.

In a snippet teasing the audiobook chapter, the former B2K rapper talks about the moment when he realizes that Raz is hurting.

“You can tell when someone’s energy, they’re agitated, they are moving around, he wasn’t focused, he’s saying things and I’m like ‘yo what’s good’,” Omarion says.

A woman comes on the screen as she explains the artist’s behavior.

“We find out that what triggered him, what agitated him, Boog wore a t-shirt that said, ‘I don’t feel safe,’ that was clearly a reference to what Raz had said in New York,” the woman said, after which a clip comes up of Raz-B explaining his decision to pull out of the 2019 Millennium Tour.

“Raz B is officially off the tour, I don’t feel safe because I feel like Chris Stokes is around,” Raz says in the video.

Omarion, however, questions Boog’s decision to wear the shirt.

“I wasn’t picking up that Boog was f***ng with his head, why the fuck would you wear a shirt like that,” Omarion asked as the group was seen hugging and consoling Raz-B as he cried.

On his Instagram account, Omarion talks about being there to support others in their healing.

“Mental health is not a destination, but rather a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you going. Just because no one else can heal or do your work for you, doesn’t mean you can, should or need to do it alone. In my new book “Unbothered: The Power of Choosing Joy,” I share some personal tools that have helped me stay balanced in challenging moments. It’s amazing how some people find it so easy to twist & turn a story to shed a negative light on others just to play victim. The truth always comes out in the end. No matter how hard anyone tries to hide it. Lies are just a temporary delay to the inevitable. Wishing everyone who struggles mentally or physically- strength and support,” Omarion wrote.

B2K members have been at odds over many things, but one of the more serious allegations coming from Raz-B about the group’s time together when they were kids was that their manager Chris Stokes and lead singer, Marques Houston, allegedly raped him and other artists in the group.

Chris Stokes, who was accused of making the boys perform sex acts on each other, had denied that he raped Raz-B in an Instagram DM. the other members of the group, including Houston, have been silent on the allegations.

Previous allegations by former member Quindon Tarver allege that Stokes molested Marques from an early age and Marquesin turn, allegedly raped Quindon when he was 13.

Stokes is said to have been the mastermind as he coached Marques on the rape. Quindon also alleged that says Stokes made him and the other boys take showers together and allegedly forced him and Marques to kiss each other.

Raz and Quindon have also alleged that Marques was a sexual predator, going after other boys.

In a video released more than 10 years ago, Raz alleged that Chris first molested him when he was 11 years old, and Marques also raped when for the first time when he was just 13 years old.

The singer also alleged that Stoke’s business partner Taz raped him on his 14th birthday and that he and J-Boog were allegedly forced to perform oral sex on each other.

Raz previously made damning allegations that other members of the group were also sexually assaulted, including Lil Fizz, who was allegedly raped by Marques when he was around 12.

Marques Houston has also remained silent in all the allegations, while Stokes, who now produces movies for Netflix, has never responded to the fresh allegations.
