Gwest reduces loss following surgery centre opening Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Montego Bay-based medical facility Gwest Corporation has reported a reduction in net losses for its quarter ended June 2022.

The performance comes even as Gwest recorded revenues of $43.40 million for the three months ended June 30, 2022, a 33 per cent increase over the corresponding quarter.

The company, which provides medical services and leases space at the GWest Centre in Fairview, reported losses as its revenue from rentals underperformed the costs associated with operations.

The results for the quarter showed a net loss of $10.69 million compared to $10.75 million for the corresponding quarter ending June 30, 2021.

Gwest’s revenue improvement came following a 77 per cent increase in patient fees during the quarter following the opening of the surgery centre facilities and an increase in business activity.

The new surgery centre consists of two major operating rooms, a minor operating room, recovery rooms and an observation in-patient facility.

Management said it would continue to pursue a strategy of revenue enhancement and cost containment, including the review of offerings.

It will also seek opportunities to increase revenue and widen service offerings.

“We continue to remain positive in our outlook as we expect an improvement in our business environment going forward with the opening of the new surgery and the gradual return to some level of normalcy post-COVID. It is also expected that the patient numbers will continue to increase.”

During the review quarter, Gwest saw its rental and income increase by 21 per cent over the corresponding quarter in the prior year due to an increased lease of space.

Its earnings were, however, impacted by an increase in operating and administrative expenses.

For the quarter ending June 30, 2022, total expenses stood at $54 million compared to $48 million in the comparative quarter, representing an increase of $6 million or a 12.5 per cent increase year-over-year.

This increase was due to a $5.5 million or 30 per cent increase in operating expenses. Administrative expenses also increased due to start-up operating costs of the newly opened surgery centre.

Meanwhile, total assets as at June 30, 2022, stood at $1.67 billion and current assets remain relatively stable at $187 million, the company said.

“Our borrowing inclusive of loans and lease commitment reduced by $17.32 million over the corresponding quarter in the prior year. Our cash balances and deposits decreased from $77.95 million in the previous quarter to $39.39 million this quarter,” Gwest said.

St. Peter MP Michael declares he will contest upcoming general elections and will make history as first ‘independent’ winner

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

MP for St. Peter Asot Michael has indicated that he will contest the upcoming general elections as an independent candidate, as he has been removed from the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) ticket.

Michael was not ratified as a candidate during what he describes as the Labour Party’s recent “kangaroo convention.” Instead, Rawdon Turner was unanimously voted in to represent St. Peter.

In no uncertain terms, however, Michael says he will contest the St. Peter seat in the general elections, and declares he will make history by becoming the first independent candidate to win an election in this country.

According to MP Michael, the ALP’s Suitability Committee did not give reasons why it found him not fit to run on the party’s ticket.

In fact, he claims the Chairman of that committee, Hilroy Humphreys, voted in favour of his remaining the party’s candidate for that constituency.

Further, Michael alleges that one of the members of the Suitability Committee is a relative of Turner.

Meanwhile, he says the popularity of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, the political leader of the ALP, is very low in the St. Peter constituency. Browne’s behaviour and attitude have infuriated many of the constituents, Michael claims. – REAL NEWS

Lack of funds affecting Pharmacy Council’s ability to issue licenses and putting importation of prescription drugs at risk

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

There is a brewing situation that threatens the availability of life-saving drugs in Antigua and Barbuda.

REAL News has received reliable information that the Pharmacy Council – which is responsible for issuing licences to the distributors of pharmaceuticals – does not have the funds to print the requisite licences.

If these documents are not presented to the overseas suppliers, the local distributors reportedly will be unable to procure and then retail prescription drugs, our source explains.

The source says the Council requires only $2,000 to print these licences and the request for funds reportedly was made two years ago.

Reports also claim the Council downed tools in May 2022, after its request was not honoured, and on account of money it is owed since 2019.

Further reports allege that the country’s largest wholesaler of prescription drugs will not be able to import pharmaceuticals, since its licence expired on August 9, and it is already having challenges.

It is feared that businesses will follow soon and they, too, will be unable to import prescription drugs.

According to our source, Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph was cautioned, since April, that if this situation is not addressed the Council would down tools.

Reportedly, members of the Council have also written to the Executive; however, the source says that no moves have been made to pay the money owed.

The source reports, further, that the Council does not have an office from which to conduct its work and, therefore, is forced to meet wherever the president is located.

Reports say the Pharmacy Council is responsible for earning hundreds of thousands annually for the Government, and has been responsible for overseeing the purchase and distribution of pharmaceuticals since 1995.
