Prime Minister Andrew Holness has received official congratulations from the Government of the United States of America on Jamaica marking 60 years of political independence.

During a call with Holness on August 8, US Vice President Kamala Harris extended best wishes to the Government and people of Jamaica.

Harris committed to providing support to Jamaica. She announced that the US Government will provide US$2 million to support the creation of a Cyber Centre of Excellence in Jamaica for the benefit of the wider Caribbean region.

Holness welcomed the announcement and thanked Harris for the commitment. The leaders also discussed the importance of more significant investment in cybersecurity.

“I was delighted to receive warm wishes from the US Government. Jamaica and the US continue to enjoy long-standing close ties, with Jamaica’s large diaspora in the US. The Government and people of Jamaica are grateful for the continued investment in and support of our nation. The enhancement of our cybersecurity capabilities is a priority area for the Government, and I am, indeed, pleased that the US Government will assist in establishing a cyber centre of excellence in Jamaica which will serve the region.”

Both Holness and Harris welcomed the progress made on three short-term joint US-Caribbean committees launched by President Joe Biden and the Vice President in June to develop concrete solutions that urgently address food security, energy security, and financial challenges confronting the region.

Monday’s call follows Holness’ meeting with the Vice-President on March 30, where they discussed security, COVID-19 recovery, and economic growth, among several other issues.

The Prime Minister also participated in a virtual meeting that Vice President Harris held with Caribbean leaders on April 29. And on June 10, he called on Government heads of the Americas to create a new blueprint for regional cooperation at the 9th Summit of the Americas convened by President Biden and the Vice President in Los Angeles, California.

Elon Musk vende casi 6.900 millones de dólares en acciones de Tesla en medio de su batalla legal con Twitter

Black Immigrant Daily News

GT: Out with old, in with new, question is, “Revitalisation for who?” Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

According to the George Town Revitalisation Plan, a pedestrian-friendly mixed-use environment is coming to downtown George Town. Some members of the public still fear, however, that the “mixed-use” proposal will not result in the “preservation and renewal of historic buildings and landscapes” that the Plan says it hopes to achieve, but, instead, will mirror urban images of other countries and make downtown George Town more expensive rather than affordable.

Tearing down old buildings

An example of non-preservation was seen this weekend when an old building was torn down within the “revitalisation area.” If this activity continues throughout the area, the remaining old, wooden homes and buildings near Goring Avenue, Eastern Avenue and elsewhere in central George Town will be at the risk of being sacrificed for the creation of an image that does not remind Caymanians of the “old Cayman.” If this happens, then George Town will not look like a unique, historical town that Caymanians and tourists can enjoy, but, instead a replication of structures from big cities that people came to Cayman to avoid.

Evidence of replication

Evidence of replication of other cities can be seen at work now on Cardinal Avenue. In fact, imagery of other cities is boldly stated in the Plan, which says:

Cardinal Avenue and Main Street are to be resurfaced with large tiles, seating, shade trees and lighting replicating Paseo del Prado in Old Havana, Cuba… It is also proposed to construct an ornate fountain to replace the triangular traffic island. The plan also calls for improvements to public footpaths (PROW) to encourage more utilisation.

The statement of replicating Paseo del Prado in Old Havana, Cuba, while odd, has probably gone unnoticed by members of the public. It is not that Caymanians have no history with Cuba, but that the emphasis should be placed on Cayman history and creating memories for Caymanians rather than paying homage to another place which speaks a different language, has distinct customs and celebrates an almost entirely different past.

Affordability for downtown residents

The tiling of streets and mixed-use buildings also bring a cost along with them. This cost is important when analysing who lives in downtown George Town and whether they can afford to continue living there, post-revitalisation.

In connection with this, the Plan, using information from an old census report says:

More than 50% of residents earned less than $20,000/annum, 72% had high school or lower educational attainment and there was very little diversity in building uses and population.

Since that data was collected, the entire George Town has increased by almost 3,000 households, George Town boasts the highest level of unemployment and the greatest number of persons not in the labour force, according to the 2021 Census.

In addition, the 2021 Census reported that more than half of the employed labour force in Cayman were in earnings brackets lower than the average earnings bracket.

Combining these facts with the 11 per cent and 12 per cent increases in the cost of living in the first two quarters of 2022, it is worrying whether lower income people in downtown George Town will be able to afford the prices in the revitalised area. Objectively speaking, if they cannot spend, then the revitalisation may be of no benefit to them beyond their aesthetic appreciation of the tiled streets and transplanted vegetation.

Charlestown, Nevis, August 04, 2022 (NIA) — Twelve thousand, nine hundred and eighteen persons on Nevis are eligible to vote in August 05, 2022, National Assembly Election, according to Mr. Elvin Bailey, Supervisor of Elections.

In an update issued on August 02, Mr. Bailey informed that 6,669 persons are eligible to vote in Nevis 9- the parishes of St. John’s and St. Paul’s; 1, 845 in Nevis 10 – the parish of St. George’s; and 4,404 in Nevis 11- the parishes of St. Thomas’ and St. James’.

This marks an increase in the number of voters in all three constituencies on Nevis compared to the June 05, 2020, general elections. In 2020, 6,497 persons were eligible to vote in Nevis 9; 1,774 in Nevis 10; and 3,618 in Nevis 11.

Three political parties have nominated candidates to contest Friday’s election – the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) whose symbol is the hammer, the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) whose symbol is the bottle, and a new party the Moral Restoration Movement (MRM), assigned the spade as its symbol.

The CCM presently holds all three federal seats in Nevis in Premier Hon. Mark Brantley in Nevis 9, Hon. Eric Evelyn in Nevis 10, and Deputy Premier Hon. Alexis Jeffers in Nevis 11.

The Elections Supervisor encouraged the electorate to check the Voters’ Lists to ensure their names are duly listed prior to Election Day. The lists of voters have been posted in each polling division of each constituency, at the electoral offices in Basseterre and Charlestown, and is available online at www.legal.gov.kn

He reminded that the polls will be open at 7 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. All persons in line in the precinct of the polling stations at 6 p.m. will be allowed to vote, however, anyone who comes in line after 6 p.m. will not be allowed to vote.

Voters are asked to take along at least one piece of government-issued identification such as the National ID Card or passport when they turn up at the polling stations.

A seven-member CARICOM election observer team and an eleven-member election observer team from the Organization of American States (OAS) will join local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to monitor the St. Kitts and Nevis general elections on August 05, 2022.
