CAMALOTE VILLAGE, Cayo District, Mon. Aug. 8, 2022

A newborn baby was hospitalized over the weekend after sustaining injuries to the arm, mouth, and back that were allegedly caused by his father. The father, Troy Banner, who claimed that the 15-day-old baby had fallen from a bed, has since been arrested and charged with grievous harm.

ASP Alfonso Aban, Officer Commanding the Criminal Investigations Branch, said that the charges against Banner were made following the statement given by the mother of the newborn child.

Of note is that in June 2019, Banner, a resident of Camalote Village, was arrested and charged with manslaughter for the death of his two month-old child, Thevane Banner. He claimed that the child had choked while being fed, but an autopsy report revealed soon after that baby Thevane had died from multiple skull fractures and head trauma consistent with Battered Child Syndrome.

Banner pleaded not guilty to the charge and was offered bail of $10,000 plus a surety of the same amount, which he was able to meet.

Before being charged, he had accused the nurses at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital of causing the two-month-old’s death, claiming that they gave him too much adrenaline and that they were trying to make it appear as if he had abused his child.

Also in June of that year, Banner’s ex-common-law wife came forward to accuse him of child abuse as well, noting that, seven years before, her child had suffered bruises and a fractured skull—similar to that of baby Thevane—after being in Banner’s care.

According to ASP Aban, the police will be looking into Banner’s “pattern of behavior” and his history of abuse.

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Aug. 8, 2022 Vanessa Acevedo, 35, the owner of “Cocktail Bar” on Perez Road in Ladyville, was shot dead by a 17-year-old robber in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, August 6, while closing her establishment. The minor allegedly shot her point blank in the chest before escaping with

some of her belongings. At around 12:15 a.m. Saturday,

Acevedo was in the company of a 19-year-old security guard who was assisting her in closing her establishment, and while they were standing at the back of the property, a young man entered through a side gate, approached Acevedo, and demanded that she pass over her belongings—presumably her money and jewelry—to him.

Moments later, the robber pulled out a firearm and fired a single shot at point blank range at Acevedo, which seemingly killed her on the spot. The robber then quickly took whatever valuables Acevedo had in her possession and fled.

Over the weekend, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, informed members of the local media that a suspect was taken into custody by police in connection with the death of Vanessa Acevedo and is awaiting charges.

On Monday, during the weekly police press briefing, ASP Alfonso Aban, Officer Commanding the Crime Investigating Branch (CIB), told local reporters that a 17-year-old minor from the Stann Creek District was charged in the presence of his mother for murder. Acevedo’s belongings were later recovered in an area where her attacker fled.

ASP Aban further informed reporters that they are seeking a second assailant in connection with this crime.

Efforts continue unabated at improving the level and quality of service being provided to wards at the island’s lone juvenile rehabilitation institution – the Boys Training Centre (BTC).

Towards this end, BTC staff were recently on the receiving end of a two-day training program in modern Psychosocial and Trauma Methods, administered by staff of the United States based Harding University.

Harding University is a private learning institution established in 1924 with its main campus in Arkansas, USA. It is the Largest University in Arkansas and is associated with the Church of Christ in Saint Lucia.

Psychotherapist and Professor at Harding University Todd Pattern notes that one of the goals of the Harding team is to serve communities and help guide staff in managing conflict in ways that minimizes unmanageable circumstances.

“We have a yearly visit to Saint Lucia and we always make an effort to visit the Boys Training Centre. We are a church affiliated group that always serves the community. We did this at this facility especially when Botham Jean, who attended Harding University was alive, and so we intend to continue. The staff received training in trauma and psychosocial resolving methods while the wards were engaged in sporting activities,” noted Pattern.

Manager of the Boys Training Center (BTC) Wang Sonson expressed delight and appreciation for the latest training stating, “Any training that is offered to staff is welcomed; however, this particular training is essential and most importantly, it is coming from an international perspective. Out of that training I hope to see staff readily apply what they have learnt. This will not only benefit staff but it will change the way boys are rehabilitated. We at the BTC welcome all persons who show and take interest in the rehabilitation of BTC wards.”

The two-day training session ran from July 27 to July 28, 2022.

mr. Edgard Vrolijk:

Pero awo e ta den man di e 20 Parlamentarionan pa revisa y duna feedback pa complementa esaki of pa presenta un nobo si nan no ta mira nan mes den e draft aki.

Plastic Free St. Kitts: Ministry of Tourism Educating People to Be Good Destination Stewards

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 3, 2022 (MMS-SKN) — Plastic Free July March, held on Friday July 29 in Basseterre, brought down the curtains on the successful St. Kitts Plastic Free July (PFJ) 2022 activities put on by the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council of the Ministry of Tourism.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Mrs Carlene Henry-Morton, who led the participants as they trekked from Five-Ways to West Independence Square via Cayon Street instead of the previously advertised route via Central Street, said that a survey was conducted at the end of the march to hear recommendations of the local people as it relates to the sustainability of St. Kitts and Nevis as an environmentally friendly destination.

“We are genuinely interested in hearing from our locals,” said Mrs Henry-Morton. “What are their recommendations, what are their ideas, what are the challenges that they are having, and the ways in which they think the Ministry can work even harder to look after the environment, to make sure that we educate and train our local people to be good destination stewards.”

While the Plastic Free July March was the last activity on the St. Kitts Plastic Free July (PFJ) 2022 calendar of activities, other related activities are slated for the rest of the year as the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council of the Ministry of Tourism continues to promote the island as a viable destination.

The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis which through the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council of the Ministry of Tourism first participated in the ‘Plastic Free July’ campaigns in 2017 held this year’s activities under the theme ‘Be part of the solution – help end plastic pollution’.

According to the Permanent Secretary, the idea of the Ministry in implementing the initiatives and programmes is to “educate our people; train our people so that they are the best destination stewards that they can be.”

While the initiatives and programmes have been organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Mrs Henry-Morton applauded the input, assistance and coordination by the Ministry Education through which a number of preschools took part in the march, and the Department of Environment who participated in the march.

Preschools that took part in the march included Bright Sparks Academy whose children led the march from the start to the end. Others were McKnight Day Care, Victoria Road Preschool, Wings of Love Preschool, and Industrial Site Day Care.

“We had a number of private individuals, parents and a lot of persons who came up to support us,” said the Permanent Secretary. “We are eternally grateful and we look forward to them supporting all of the other initiatives that we are going to put on for the rest of the year and in the years ahead.”

Sustainable Tourism Coordinator in the St. Kitts Ministry of Tourism, Mr Kenney Manning, said that the march turned out pretty well with a very good turnout, and he too thanked the Early Childhood Unit for the participation of the preschoolers, just coming out of the 37th celebration of Child Month held in June, that was held under the theme ‘Recycle: Save the Earth for our Children’s Future’.

“We also had several organisations such as the Ministry of Environment, who are the ones that are promoting the legislation to ban the single-use plastics,” said Mr Manning.

Others included the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, the Ministry of Tourism staff, Department of Co-operatives, St. Kitts Nevis Youth Parliament Association, St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Radio Society, Sunset Reef, Clean Seas, the Police, and Department of Youth among others.

He also thanked the Urban Development Unit for giving them permission to use the Square, and partners of the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council, who in one way or the other assisted not only in the Plastic July March, but in all the other St. Kitts Plastic Free July (PFJ) 2022 activities. He in particular mentioned Tappwater Caribbean/Espo Water Solution who provided Plastic Free July March participants with filtered water at the Independence Square.

According to Mr Manning, other members of the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council at the Plastic Free July March were, Chair Mrs Diannille Taylor-Williams, Ms Sara Ramirez, Mr Javid Buchanan, Ms Johneal Harvey, Mr Royden Isaac, Ms Lynelle Bonaparte, Ms Goldha Franks, and Ms Kathy Rouse.

“While the march will be the culmination of Plastic Free July activities, our activities are going to continue,” said Mr Manning. “We are going to have Plastic Be Gone activities and in fact next month (August) we are going to launch a more substantive survey.”
