The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has increased the probability that the next tropical cyclone of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season could develop this week.

In the forecast this morning, NHC said there is a 20 per cent chance that a large area of disorganised showers and thunderstorms, which is located south of the Cabo Verde islands, could become a tropical wave over the next 48 hours.

This is up from the near zero per cent chance given on Sunday.

There is still a medium chance of the system becoming a tropical cyclone over the next five days.

NHC said: “Environmental conditions appear generally conducive for gradual development of this system while it moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic, and a tropical depression could form around the middle to latter part of this week.”

If a tropical storm or hurricane does develop, it will be called Danielle.

Consumers will pay more for petroleum products from today, Monday, August 8, 2022, except for kerosene, which will be sold at $2.36, a reduction of 30 cents.

The price of gasoline will move to $4.83 per litre, an increase of 11 cents, while diesel will go up by 20 cents to $4.28.

The retail price of LPG will now be $170.87 for the 100-lb cylinder; $ 47.82 for the 25-lb cylinder; $42.24 for the 22-lb cylinder and $38.40 for the 20-lb cylinder.

Government announced the capping of the Value Added Tax on gasoline and diesel in this year’s Budget and Financial Proposal in an effort to shield consumers from the full increase of refined petroleum products.

However, in light of increasing oil prices internationally, the prices had to be adjusted upward for August.

WATCH: Golding says pollution of Rio Cobre should not happen again Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Opposition Leader Mark Golding says the spill of caustic effluent which led to the recent pollution of the Rio Cobre in St Catherine, should not be allowed to reoccur, as in the past.

“The bigger point is, going forward, this should never be allowed to happen again. There must be no release of this toxic waste into the river ever again,” declared Golding.

He was speaking on Friday after leading a tour with People’s National Party (PNP) officials of Kent Village and other St Catherine communities that have been affected by the pollution that resulted in a massive fish kill.

On Friday, the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) ndicated that it will serve a motive of intention to suspend UC Rusal/West Indies Alumina Company’s (Windalco’s) environmental permits and licences because of the pollution of the Rio Cobre.

According to Golding, the damage is severe, as not only fisher folk have been affected, but also farmers and “approximately 500,000 households in three parishes” have been impacted due to disruptions in water supply, as the National Water Commission (NWC) had to shut down its Spanish Town treatment plant to prevent contaminated water from reaching customers.

The PNP president said the Government must quickly update the legislation related to environmental breaches, as the fines are minuscule.

“Those penalties are minuscule. We have been calling on the Government to amend the NRCA (National Resources Conservation Authority) Act and put meaningful penalties and remediation and compensation clauses into it.

“They (the Government) have not done anything about it, and this has now inflicted a calamity on communities like this one here now in Kent Village,” Golding argued.

Going forward, he said UC Rusal/Windalco must ensure that the “toxic waste” is “either treated so it is fully neutralised before it is can be released, but until then, it is must be dealt with through a proper system of waste management.”

For her part, Member of Parliament (MP) for North Central St Catherine, Natalie Neita-Garvey, in whose constituency Kent Village falls is located, said NEPA should have alerted the residents of the effluent spill in the Rio Cobre.

She claimed that NEPA alerted the NWC about the spill, and the Spanish Town treatment plant was subsequently shut down.

“There should have been equal effort or greater effort to alert the people who live along the banks,” said the parliamentarian.

UNC: Trinidad and Tobago should ask for monkeypox vaccine donations

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

Caroni East MP Dr Rishad Seecheran addresses monkey pox vaccines at the Opposition’s media briefing on Sunday. – AYANNA KINSALE

OPPOSITION MP Dr Rishad Seecheran says the Health Ministry must not be totally dependent on the efforts of Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) to ensure TT has timely access to the vaccine used to treat the monkey pox virus.

He said Government should have no problem asking developed countries –many of which have already sourced and stored large batches of the vaccine –for donations.

On August 3, Health Minister Terrance Deyalsingh said the ministry placed an order with PAHO for 2,000 doses of the monkey pox vaccine. He said there was no firm confirmation of prices or arrival date.

On Sunday, speaking at the Opposition’s media briefing on Sunday, Seecheran said 2,000 doses of the two-dose regime vaccine was not enough to protect the country should there be an outbreak.

“This is not enough Minister Deyalsingh should an outbreak occur in our twin-island republic. We will all be left exposed and every single citizen of Trinidad and Tobago will be at risk. Every effort must be made to get more access to monkey pox vaccines.

“Up to now TT doesn’t have a single monkey pox vaccine. We should not entirely rely upon PAHO and the WHO (World Health Organisation) or vaccine supply to combat monkey pox. The WHO has created a new vaccine-sharing mechanism to stop the outbreak of monkey pox and this program is based on countries’ epidemiological needs, very similar to Covax mandate.

“Right now we are open to attack from monkey pox. We must reach out to foreign partners possibly for a donation. The United States has millions of vaccines, many of the European countries have millions of vaccines and they are they are keeping it from their population.

“But we need to reach out to these foreign governments and ask for donations because we do not know when we would get that order of 2,000 vaccines from PAHO.

“As we saw with the Covax initiative, rich countries bought up most of the world’s supply of vaccines.”

The Covax facility was crippled by vaccine-hoarding which created shortages to the detriment of poorer countries.

Covax was founded in April 2020, by the WHO, Gavi; the Vaccine Alliance, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, European Commission and the Government of France after scientists began working on an effective covid19 vaccine.

Covax’s objective was to ensure all countries had equal access, through its facility, to the covid19 vaccines whenever they became available. TT ordered 100,800 covid19 doses through Covax in 2020.

At the opening ceremony of CARPHA’s stakeholder consultation on regional health security, at the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain, in July, Deyalsingh admitted to having fears of TT having difficulties with accessing monkey pox vaccine.

Seecheran suggested a proper health-care response plan targeting high-risk citizens as the country remains on high alert for the virus’ arrival.

He said the appointment of a director of infectious diseases was required to focus on manoeuvring TT through this impending threat.
