With more than 20 years of experience in arthroscopic procedures and joint replacements, Dr. Alwin Almeida, Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at Health City Cayman Islands, has successfully completed more than 6,000 surgeries. One thing he appreciates is the need to continually invest in and leverage technological advances for the benefit of his patients.

“As a surgeon, I’m always looking for innovative ways to improve surgical outcomes,” said Dr Almeida. “The technology has improved quite a lot to where now you have intelligent machines where you can control a lot of the functions that earlier the surgeon had to control their self.”

That’s why he has seen to it that Health City’s orthopaedic surgeons are the first in the Caribbean to have access to the Intellio Connected Tower Solution from Smith+Nephew that features 4K technology to enhance the medical team’s view of surgical area, particularly in joint repair and replacement procedures.

“It’s a big game changer. To put it simply, it’s like using the Ferrari of arthroscopic towers. It is fast, it’s efficient, and it improves my efficiency. It allows me to do more procedures in a shorter time and it allows a consistent result with all surgeries,” he said, adding “It gives us the best environment possible. It’s an automatic system that adjusts during the surgery to give you the best possible joint picture so that you can do the best possible job with regard to the repair.”

Thousands of patients across North America, Latin American and the Caribbean have been able to have increased quality of life as a result of the skilled work done by Dr Almeida and his colleagues in the Department of Orthopaedics. Health City’s Chief Business Officer Shomari Scott indicated that it’s against that backdrop that investments like the new Intellio Connected Tower are in line with the organisation’s vision.

“From day one, we have sought to provide healthcare solutions that matter to people, not just in the Cayman Islands, but across the Western Hemisphere. Especially with COVID-19 restrictions being lessened and people being more willing to travel, we want to be in a position to ensure that when they select Health City, they can rest assured that not only do we have highly-skilled world-class professionals but they have access to the latest tools and technology to help ensure excellent outcome for patients,” said Mr. Scott.

Health City’s surgeons specialise in various orthopaedic and arthroscopic procedures, including total and partial hip and knee replacements, shoulder surgery, elbow surgery, hand and wrist surgery, foot and ankle surgery in patients of all ages and activity levels.

There is a major boost for Jamaica’s football programme as sportswear giant Adidas is set to become the main sponsor of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the official kit supplier of all national football teams as of January 2023.

This is a major development for the cash-strapped JFF, which made the announcement on Saturday.

“We are incredibly proud to announce this unprecedented partnership with Adidas and are looking forward to achieving great things together,” said JFF president Michael Ricketts in a statement.

“The partnership will support the JFF’s efforts to develop Jamaican football at all levels and will facilitate further success at the professional level in the years to come. The JFF is now a part of the Adidas portfolio of international federations, joining giants such as the DFB (Germany), RFEF (Spain), AFA (Argentina), FIGC (Italy), and the RBFA (Belgium),” Ricketts added.

According to Nick Craggs, general manager for Adidas Global Football, the company was looking forward to contributing to the development of football in Jamaica.

“We’re delighted to be announcing this long-term partnership with the Jamaica Football Federation. The country?s potential on the pitch – of which the consecutive World Cup qualifications of the women?s team is a testament – along with the richness and global relevance of its culture, which resonates far beyond football and Jamaica?s borders, make it a great fit to join our Adidas International Federations family. We look forward to celebrating many achievements together while contributing to the progress and future of Jamaican football at all levels of the game,” Craggs said.

The JFF credited Marlon Gilbert-Roberts, CEO of Business 2 Sports Group as being one of the architects of the “historic deal” alongside sports lawyer Jonathan Himpe and former Reggae Boy Fitzroy Simpson.

Gilbert-Roberts said the partnership “represents a unique opportunity for renewal, and rebuilding on a strong foundation.

“It is fitting that this announcement is made on the day we celebrate our 60th year of Independence. This partnership celebrates the unity, strength, inclusivity, joy, national pride, and tradition that consistently place Jamaican culture centre stage,” he said.

Education Ministry working to ensure everyone benefits from “Because We Care” cash grants

Black Immigrant Daily News

Education Minister Priya Manickchand speaking on the “Education Spotlight” social media programme

Even as the distribution of the “Because We Care” cash grants and uniform allowance wrapped up on Friday, Education Minister Priya Manickchand said government is committed to ensuring that all parents receive their monies.

Making remarks on the conclusion of the four-day distribution exercise, Manickchand said that her ministry will seek to address the issue of late registration and those parents who did not receive due to other reasons.

“We’ve had parents coming to say that they registered late and parents coming to say, particularly from private schools that their names we’re not on the register for one reason or the other so, we’re going to have to look at what we have remaining and whether we can serve all of those persons still in a second go around.”

“So, there is going to be 2-second tranches to be done; the first one being people who are legitimately on the list but could not get here for whatever reason – they’re work, they’re in the hospital, whatever – and we’ll announce those dates shortly. And then, the second one we’ll look to see whether the people who were not registered on time, didn’t do what we asked them to do, if we have enough in our budget to serve them,” the Minister noted.

She went on to explain that the budget for the cash grant and uniform allowance programme was arrived at based on the number of children registered. However, she disclosed that the ministry may still be able to “do something” for those who are unregistered.

Meanwhile, Manickchand further stated that the rollout of the grant was very smooth and noted that this is the first time the government has rolled a cash grant of this of magnitude.

“The Ministry of Education rolled out a really good programme of course with assistance from the Guyana Police Force and the Auditor General’s Office and so we’ve had not only a programme that was smooth and efficient but one that was really accountable and very transparent, and I’m very glad about that. I want you all to pause for one second and think about the fact that we just served one hundred and ninety-something children in four days, distributing probably more than $5 billion. Of course, the numbers are now coming in but that has never been done in this country before,” she declared.

Minister Manickchand assured that the Government will continue the distribution of the cash grants next year and keep its promise of increasing it each year.

“To all the parents, please know that this is going to be a continuous grant, we said that from the moment we started in 2014 that it was going to raise incrementally until it became at least $50,000 and we have stayed true to that promise. So, next year and the years following this will continue and even increase. Please spend this [money] wisely, this is supposed to be help for you, to get your children prepared for school and gives us great pleasure being in your service,” she posited.

The Government of Guyana initially aimed to distribute a total of 193,679 “Because We Care” cash grants and school uniform allowances this year.

This was estimated to be at a cost of over $5.8 billion.

Each child in the public and private school system would receive $30,000 – $25,000 as the grant and $5000 as an allowance for school uniforms.
