Judging for the Payce Digital/ COB Credit Union All Stars Calypso tent got underway last Sunday, July 10, before a packed auditorium at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre (LESC).

The evening was filled with several stellar performances and encores were the order of the night as both the topics tackled and deliveries seem to resonate strongly with attendees.

The just over four-hour-long show had a number of stand-out performances. Niqa, with her number Red Woman, received the first encore of the evening as she expertly navigated the local perceptions about ‘red’ women. Sammy G delivered a commanding Dear Diary which chronicled the effects of abuse and brought members of the audience to their feet, earning her an encore. Teri’s Who We Are was similarly impactful and earned her a recall while newcomer to the calypso scene John Yarde rendered a fitting tribute to those lost over the years in I Will Remember You, which resulted in him being recalled to the stage as well.

Jude Clarke brought a Latin-infused number with his Struggling, highlighting the challenges faced with an increasing cost of living while Donella paid tribute to the artform and those who have contributed to its legacy in Dat is Calypso, which prompted an encore performance.

Unfazed by a technical issue with his microphone at the beginning, veteran calypsonian Colin Spencer went on to deliver a biting social commentary which resulted in his return to the stage for a brief encore performance. In his If Ya Do These Things, he outlined several things that would have to done in order to sway him to jump on the PM’s ‘bandwagon’. Shawnie’s Give Me D Vote and Watch Mah also earned an encore.

Other performances included Sammy Dello with Not a Day, Ishiaka McNeil who addressed the lack of Caribbean unity with Un-United Caribbean and a spirited delivery of Celebrate Life by Richard Antonio who preached positivity. De Announcer rendered a craftily written Mia Like D’s while the audience wanted to hear Charisma’s Heaven on Earth a second time.

Other tentmates included Yahandje Daniel, D2 Fifty and Bobo who were all well received. Co-emcee Eric Lewis was the final performer of the night, donning his Rudifus ‘hat’ and, in his usual style, performed the controversial, crowd-stirring De Church Bells.

It was a night filled with as many encores as there were laughs and giveaways, concluding just after 11 pm.

All Stars walked away with the most entrants for the Courtesy Garage Pic-O-De-Crop Finals slated for July 29.

Of the 17 finalists, eight are from the Payce Digital/ COB Credit Union All Stars Calypso Tent.

The eight finalists include: Colin Spencer with If I Do These Things; De Announcer with Mia Loved D’s; Donella, Dat is Calypso; first-timer John Yarde with his song I Will Remember; Jude Clarke with Struggling; Rudifus singing De Church Bell; Sammy G with Dear Diary and Teri with Who We Are.

Nudes Estate ticks all the boxes Loop Barbados

The grounds of Sandalwood Estate were beautifully transformed on Sunday, July 3, as Nudes Estate was hosted at the St Michael location.

With elegantly-draped cocktail tables throughout the venue, there were several food and beverage options available to patrons with a variety of booths lining the perimeter of the venue. While some chose to sit poolside, others took full advantage of the white-couched lounge area while taking in the evening’s action. Hookahs and a variety of signature cocktails were also available.

Several patrons choose to stand at the cocktail tables which dotted the venue, enjoying drinks, laughs and wuk-ups with friends. Both male and female patrons came dressed to impress, with some fully embracing the nude concept as a variety of natural tones and nude-hued outfits were observed.

The deejay line-up added to the event’s ambience with a slew of popular DJs who kept the vibes flowing. It was clear from the crowd’s reaction that their selection of tracks got the general stamp of approval. The evening’s DJs included Sheldon Papp and Chasey, Level Vibes and Menace and Surf Rat, among others

The evening’s live entertainment featured some of the island’s most popular artistes. Leadpipe and Saddis hit the stage first and were very well received as they unleashed a number of tracks from their musical catalogue.

The arrival of Mole was met with screams from female patrons and as he delivered a slew of his bashment hits, those in the crowd limbered up and returned his energy.

Lil Rick took the energy of the evening up a couple of notches. His arrival prompted the crowd to inch even closer to the stage and he fed off the energy of his audience who followed his every instruction. The highlight of the evening came when he dived off the stage right onto the derriere of a female patron during his performance DJ Cheem’s Ba Ba Ben Remix.

As usual, his on and off-stage antics commanded the crowd’s full attention and they were reluctant to allow him to leave as his departure signalled an end to the evening’s live entertainment segment.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Guadeloupe FranceAntilles

10 pivotal moments in Merciless’ career Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

Dancehall deejay Merciless passed away on July 19 at the age of 51.

Merciless, whose given name is Leonard Bartley, was found dead in a guest house on Walker’s Avenue, off Beechwood Avenue, in St Andrew on Tuesday evening. He had checked in alone.

According to eyewitnesses, the Ole Gallis artiste was last seen the night before. Merciless, who was from Clarendon, was doing gigs at several Corporate Area studios, at the time of his death.

A screengrab of the Sting 2000 clash shows Merciless (r) and Ninjaman in a lyrical battle.

Here is a look back at the career of the artiste who burst onto the music scene in the 1990s.

1. ‘HOWDY!’ This was Merciless’ signature greeting at stage shows to fans, who were about to get ‘rowdy’ at his lyrical stylings.

2. Merciless exploded on the scene with ‘Len Out Mi Mercy’, which was unleashed in a Stone Love dance at the nightclub, House of Leo.

3. One of the Clarendon native’s biggest hits was the Robert Livingston-produced ‘Mavis’, which was the top Reggae single in Jamaica in 1995. Other standout songs include ‘Gal Dem Gizzada’, ‘Mama Cooking’ and ‘Mr Whodini’.

4. Merciless collaborated with Lady Saw for ‘Baby Mother’ and ‘Long Till It Bend’.

5. He recorded three albums: Mr Merciless (1994), VP Records; Len’ Out Mi Mercy (1995), Annex; and Mama’s Cooking (1997), Greensleeves Records.

6. In April 2015, Merciless’ wife was discovered dead in a house in Longville Park, Clarendon on a Friday morning. Investigators uncovered empty pill bottles close to the body.

7. Merciless is best known for a legendary clash which took place at Sting 2000 when he annihilated a mighty triumvirate of Ninjaman, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man, turning the tables when they tried to ambush him in a lyrical face-off at the Jamworld Entertainment Complex in Portmore, St Catherine.

8. One of Merciless’ best-known songs is ‘The Letter’, Merciless’ heartfelt recollection of his 14-month incarceration in a Florida prison, a reality song that struck a chord with the public. ‘The Letter’ is a statement to his mother, Ruby Ettle Bartley. He said he refused to call her by phone, fearing she could not cope with the news that the last of her seven children had been imprisoned.

9. Merciless was involved in an ugly onstage exchange with Beenie Man and Bounty Killer at Reggae Sumfest in 2001. As a result, promoters banned him permanently from that show.

10. In June last year, Merciless had vowed that he would be putting out an album titled, ‘Warhead Is Back’.

CHTA, OAS Urge Strengthening Of Small Businesses – St. Lucia Times News

Building the resilience of small tourism enterprises (STEs) in the Caribbean is fundamental to the region’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and future crises, according to the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) and the Organization of American States (OAS).

Speaking ahead of an OAS-sponsored high-level gathering of Caribbean tourism leaders in Montego Bay, Jamaica this week examining business continuity planning to accelerate recovery from disasters, CHTA President Nicola Madden-Greig said the viability of STEs is critically important to the region’s rebound from COVID-19 and other potential crises.

Hosted by the Jamaica Ministry of Tourism at Holiday Inn Montego Bay Resort on July 20 and 21, attendees at the OAS gathering will explore how to build the resilience of Caribbean STEs to disasters and will review and respond to the findings and recommendations from more than 500 enterprises and stakeholders to help accelerate business continuity from future crises.

“The challenges to post-disaster business continuity of STEs in the Caribbean are many and varied,” said Madden-Greig, a respected Jamaican hotelier and leader of the regional trade association.

“STEs can take more than two years to recover financially from a disaster so we must find ways to help them get back on their feet sooner and with healthy working capital and strong business development possibilities,” she added.

Pablo González, Principal Specialist and Chief of the Risk Management and Adaptation to Climate Change Program of the OAS, said the multilateral institution is looking forward to the high-level forum, the overall expected outcome of which is the enhancement of public and institutional policy for building the resilience of STEs with the ultimate goal of reducing business interruptions.

According to González, research indicates that initiatives such as more targeted STE training, marketing and public relations education, contingency planning and tax incentives were measures that could be taken by both the public and private sectors to help STEs emerge less harmed from disasters and crisis situations.

As STEs recover from the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of crisis communication strategies will also be discussed as will the proposed launching of a Model Post-Disaster ‘Open for Business Guide’ developed by the University of the West Indies, an OAS project partner, to help build STE resilience.

Cabinet ministers and senior tourism officials from more than 50 countries across the Americas will look at ways to forge collaboration among all stakeholders, between public and private entities, and among small and big business.

The virtual and in-person event has also attracted the participation of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO); the University of the West Indies (UWI); the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA); and the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Sessions will be held in Spanish and English.
