SKNLP’s Political Leader Statement to the Nation on the Announcement of Election

Black Immigrant Daily News

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 18, 2022 (SKNLP) — Political Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Dr.  Terrance Drew, in an official address to the citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis referenced the announcement of the election date as “Liberation Day” for our beloved federation.

In his statement to the nation, Dr. Drew spoke of the rampant corruption, scandals, greed, suppression, and oppression of our people that was highlighted by the split of the coalition.

“Our LIBERATION moment is near…Over the last two months, our nation has had a front row seat and made the front pages of news across the region and internationally, as the embarrassing spectacle taking place between the warring factions of PAM, PLP and CCM unfolded. Our hearts bled as accusations and  counteraccusations of corruption, greed and incompetence were callously thrown back and forth, while  important matters of state, governance, and the people of St. Kitts and Nevis were neglected and  abandoned.”

It is abundantly clear that our nation needs new leadership that can govern with integrity, vision, competence and transparency.

Leader of the SKNLP, Dr. Terrance Drew called upon the powers that be to ensure that the upcoming election is  “free and fair and free from fear.”:

“We call on Mr. Elvin Bailey, the Supervisor of Elections, the Hon. Vincent Byron, Attorney General and the Electoral Commission to ensure that the business of the Electoral Office is conducted in accordance with the principles of impartiality and fairness and in full compliance with the laws and procedures of St. Kitts and Nevis. We call on every citizen and resident, every patriot, to join us in this fight. We call on our civil servants working in our Electoral Office and our Police and Defence Forces to take a stand for what is right and fair, and not to allow themselves to be compromised and coerced into improper and illegal conduct. We demand that international election observers, CARICOM,  Commonwealth, and the OAS, be invited in to observe our elections.”

The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party will be having our official Campaign Launch and Digital Manifesto Reveal on  Wednesday 20th July 2022 at 5:30 pm.

Emancipendence prep behind, but assurance that all will be on track Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

With only weeks to go before Jamaica’s 60th independence, an admission has come that the country is behind in its preparations for the celebrations of the milestone.

Still, Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports Minister, Olivia Grange, is expressing confidence that all will be in place for the celebrations come Independence Day, August 6.

While speaking on the matter in a recent radio interview, Grange said the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been a major factor behind the slow place of the preparations.

“We don’t have a great deal of time. We are coming along,” said Grange.

“COVID has really impacted a lot, and so, the point at which we had expected to get at this stage, we have not been able to,” she outlined.

With roughly three weeks then remaining, she said efforts are under way to get things back on track.

She said within 10 days from then, a massive promotional campaign is to be launched by the ministry for Emancipendence celebrations, the first that is to be held without the COVID-19 prevention measures that have been in place over the last two years.

Among the activities, said Grange, is the crowning of the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen, and the selection of the 2022 Festival Song Competition winner.

The latter stirred controversy after the ministry initially cancelled the competition due to poor entries. That decision was subsequently overturned, and the competition was re-opened for a week, resulting in 10 songs being selected from among over 200 entries, as against three from 123 initially.

“I know we are going to have a great festival song final and I know that our festival queen… finals will be great. We are setting up the Independence Village in the (National) Indoor Sports Centre and we’re really gonna have a great time,” she assured.

Meanwhile, Grange said the Emancipendence celebrations will also feature a segment to hail the historic back-to-back qualification of Jamaica Reggae Girlz to the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Additionally, she said there will be two eminent special guests of the Jamaican Government at the Emancipendence celebrations. She did not reveal the names of the individuals, or give details of the celebration that is intended for the Reggae Girlz.

Also, she cited the lack of any significant gap between the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon and the Emancipendence celebrations, bearing in mind the Commonwealth Games just behind the World Championships, as not allowing for any structured planning for the athletes to participate in the August 6 celebrations.

Aside from the planned preparations, the minister is calling on citizens to participate and attend as far as possible, all the activities that are being planned by the special occasion.

“I am encouraging Jamaicans to come out and enjoy. I’m also encouraging the business places to decorate in the Jamaican colours; the black, green and gold should be located everywhere,” she appealed.

In April, the Government launched the celebrations of Jamaica’s 60th Anniversary as an independent nation in fine style at Jamaica House. There was representation from a number of sectors in the society, but noticeably missing was the scheduled presence of then visiting Rwandan President, Paul Kagame.

The Rwandan president, who arrived on the island with a delegation a day earlier, was represented at the Emancipendence launch function by his Minister of Finance, Uzziel Ndagijimana, who joined the other dignitaries to partake in the evening’s activities.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Jamaica has made big strides in national development and global reach in areas like music and sports, while also giving the world a religion in Rastafarianism.

He said this was so despite diversion, shocks and setbacks along the path on which the country has been on since gaining independence in 1962.

Holness said Jamaica, as one of the earliest black democracies in the world, has also made progress in strengthening the economy within the last 10 years, which was manifested in the island being able to withstand the shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He stated that along with the Emancipendence celebrations, the focus will be on the legacy projects that are to be done, which he said are to be completed within five years.

“Today, brand Jamaica stands among the world’s most dynamic brands, and the national flag among the most recognised, and (Jamaica) remains one of the most sought after tourism destinations globally. There is much that we can celebrate as a people who emerge from the horrors of enslavement,” said Holness.

“The theme of Jamaica 60 celebrations — Re-igniting a nation for greatness — calls on us to take inspiration from our extraordinary achievements over the past 60 years as we chart the course for the next 60 years and beyond.

“Re-igniting the nation for greatness means that we must not focus only on celebratory activities, but we must ensure that we foster and promote legacies of pride in self, commitment to national development, patriotism, excellence, mutual respect for others, and an openness to other cultures and people,” he further stated.

Also addressing the function then was Grange, who reiterated that Jamaica’s 60th anniversary celebrations will be a yearlong event.

She said the legacy projects will benefit future generations of Jamaicans, with several Government agencies and private sector companies already signing on to assist.

Among the legacy projects to begin this year are: the redevelopment of the National Stadium; the establishment of the Jamaica Sports Museum and Sports Hall of Fame; the establishment of the Harry Belafonte National Concert Hall; a monument to honour frontline workers in the pandemic; as well as the construction of a new Parliament building.

Special commemorative events are to include banquets at which 60 outstanding women and 60 outstanding men are to be awarded for their services to the nation; the Kingston Biennial Exhibition at the National Gallery of Jamaica; the Jamaica 60 Reggae Gold Awards; the JDF 60 Parade; the Independence Village from July 29 to August 7; and the Grand Gala at the National Stadium.

The Grand Gala is making a welcome return after two years of cancellation, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hours-long event usually featured fireworks; musical performances from some of the country’s best entertainers, including past and present festival song winners; cultural dances and items; bike stunting shows; and other entertainment goodies.

Tens of thousands of Jamaicans usually pack the National Stadium to watch the event live.

For those not present at the stadium during the event, it is streamed live online via social media platforms, and carried on local television.

The Police arrested and charged Keiran Hutson, 22, for the larceny and receiving of a Samsung Galaxy S21 plus 5g cellular phone, valued $3,500.

He was also charged for stealing the phone case valued at $90 and an APUA SIM card valued at $20.

When he appeared before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh in the St. John’s Magistrates Court on Monday, July 18, Hutson pleaded guilty to the larceny charge and received a one-year prison sentence.

He pleaded not guilty to receiving the items, and that charge was withdrawn by the prosecution.

Reports say that Hutson attended the event at Fort James and went to dance behind the victim, whom he did not know.

Further reports say she turned around and pushed the young man away; but during that brief contact he had already picked her phone, which was in her rear pocket.

This offence reportedly occurred on July 16.

After the woman discovered her phone was missing, she used her sister’s mobile to trace the stolen device to a shop in the Craft Market and reported the matter to the Police.

It appeared that Hutson had taken the phone to the dealer to be sold. However, when he turned up to the store – apparently to collect payment – an officer was already stationed there to take him into custody.

Hutson told the court that he had found the phone.

However, this is not his first offence for larceny; a source says he has a previous conviction that did not warrant jail time. In fact, the source says, he was given a break on that occasion.

Because he was unemployed, the Chief Magistrate personally contacted an official from National Housing to offer him work and get him off the streets, the source tells REAL News.  However, Hutson never showed up to the job.

We must not take away their free will

Black Immigrant Daily News

Nobody should ban freewill. I strongly believe in God’s rule for us and that it includes same sex sexual relationship and marriages to be wrong. I agree it is wrong and will not be something I ever do. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATSAPP GROUP FOR NEWS UPDATES.

However, I strongly believe in freewill. They have the right to choose and we can not force that upon them. Doing so is also tremendously immoral. Outlawing their rights to exercise freewill and supersed God’s choice to allow us to freely choose is wrong.

I will agree to then banning their freewill, if our freewill is taken also. We no longer can have sex prior to marriage. We no longer can have multiple women, we no longer can lie, we no longer can covet, we no longer can commit all the sins and wrongs we commit just like them no longer can commit their wrongs.

Again, I love vagina for a man, a man like myself deserves vagina but you know what I love more than that, the right to freewill that God gave us.

Base on my understanding of the Bible, in cases where the violations are not directly harming or causing imminent  and substantial danger to individuals, we should bar them from choosing but are only task with educating them of the moral and natural options.

We must not take away their freewill. They may use it in a manner we do not like but we must allow them to choose. Freewill supersedes so many aspects of society’s claimed rights.

Encouraging freewill does not mean I am in support of man with man or women with women (oh sorry, exclude the women with women, that might be a different story ha ha ha ha, that was a joke).

We just can not take away freewill. We do not have the right to and power to. God has that right and power to but he said the ultimate gift I will give you is freewill. Why take that gift awa? If you take it away from one, all must lose theirs.

I do not want to lose mine.

Police re-enact the crime scene in August last year at Juman Drive, Second Caledonia, Morvant, as part of the detailed investigation into the triple murder. – Marvin Hamilton

EIGHT police officers appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate shortly after noon on Tuesday charged with the 2020 murders of three men in Second Caledonia, Morvant.

Sgt Joseph Solomon, acting corporal Charles Budri, constables Sherwin Baptiste, Mark Lewis, Vaughn St Cyr, Kameel Mohammed, Colin Furlong and Shawn Lord appeared virtually before magistrate Brian Dabideen.

Seven of the officers appeared on a video link from the Besson Street Police Station while PC Lord appeared virtually from an unknown location.

The officers were charged by Supt Wayne Abbott on Monday night with the murders of Joel Jacob, 38, Noel Diamond, 46, and Israel Moses Clinton, 27, on June 27, 2020 at Juman Drive, near the Auto Guru building.

The seven stood side by side dressed casually and answered when the magistrate called their names and raised their hands. Lord was seated and was at first wearing a face mask before he removed it.

The officers who were last assigned to the Inter-Agency Task Force were part of a team of 18 officers who intercepted a gold-coloured Nissan Tiida hatchback along Juman Drive and allegedly murdered the three men who were reportedly unarmed and had surrendered.

The incident was captured on CCTV footage and shared on social media shortly after the incident. It also sparked widespread protests for three days in Port of Spain, Morvant, Laventille, Cocorite, East Dry River and other areas as people demanded justice and a thorough investigation.

The Police Complaints Authority had completed its investigation in the matter and referred its findings to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. A special task force led by Supt Abbott was detailed to investigate and arrested the eight between July 14 and 15. All except one officer remained silent.

Attorneys Israel Khan, SC, Ulric Skerritt, James Caruth, Thalia Brooks and Arissa Maharaj represented five of the officers.

Attorneys Sheldon Maicoo and John Heath represented Lord, attorney Mario Merritt represented Lewis and attorney Wade Ceballo represented Budri. The matter was adjourned to August 16.
