The Northwestern Caribbean Baptist Theological Seminary (NCBTS) – based in Grand Cayman – is now accepting applications for the new school year, which is set to begin the first week of September.

The seminary will begin by offering two classes – Introduction to the Old Testament and Hermeneutics – both bachelor level courses that provide credit toward a twelve-course Certificate in Christian Ministry through NCBTS’ partnership with William Carey University (WCU) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Students may also apply the credits toward a bachelor’s degree at WCU. The classes will be offered both on the campus of the local host church, the Cayman Islands Baptist Church in Savannah, and through an online learning platform.

NCBTS is a Limited Liability Company (LLC) and Non-Profit Organisation which is registered with the Ministry of Education as “an educational institution providing post-compulsory education certificate programmes in Christian Ministry and Church Ministry Leadership”. The institution is also pursuing regional accreditation through the University Council of Jamaica. A first cohort of students, representing five Caribbean countries (Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Grenada, and Barbados) completed a Certificate of Church Ministry Leadership (not-for-credit) and graduated in January 2022.

“We are excited to launch our first classes this fall in the post-pandemic world and believe this is an amazing opportunity for persons interested in theological training for vocational or lay Christian ministry to easily pursue a degree programme that is accessible (online), affordable, and applicable to life in the Caribbean today,” said Pastor Randy Von Kanel, President of NCBTS.

Scholarship support for the semester may be available along with significant discounts for those persons who apply before August 15. Von Kanel explained that prospective students can also audit the classes, which would allow them to participate without seeking a grade or credit for the course.

The evening began with guests sipping signature cocktails and eating delectable delights at one of the many food tasting stations at the Kimpton Seafire Resort and Spa Beach Deck while the sun set on 7-mile beach.

Mrs. McDonald also welcome special guests from 100WF including Global Association Board Member Christina Bodden, Chief Executive Officer Amanda Pullinger, and Chief Impact Officer Chaitali Patel.

Amanda Pullinger, CEO, said:

It is hard to believe it has been 10 years since 100 Women in Finance launched a location in the Cayman Islands with a core group of professional women from leading financial services firms, who saw a need for the presence of a professional women’s organization in Cayman. These outstanding women drove its success, building leadership and programmes to promote the organization’s pillars of Education, Peer Engagement and Impact. A decade later, 100WF Cayman has held over 159 members and community focused events spanning our three pillars, developed specific demographic focused initiatives for the finance industry’s Next Generation, raised nearly US$450,000 gross in funds for local charities and supported the community with the creation of 100 Women in Finance’s flagship career mentoring programme GirlForce 100. We celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Cayman Islands location of 100WF tonight, and its groundbreaking work in career mentoring for young women, which 100WF has developed globally and continues to evolve.

Special thanks to Maples Group, Baraud, Walkers, BDO, Deloitte, Cayman Management, Cay Country, Kiss FM, and Magic the Soul of Cayman, and our many raffle prize donors for their sponsorship of the gala.

14 yrs in US for J’can who supplied stewardess with 60lbs of cocaine | Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

A Jamaican man was on Thursday, July 7 sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison in the United States for supplying a JetBlue flight attendant with nearly 60 pounds of cocaine that she attempted to smuggle on board a flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Gaston Brown, 42, of Clarendon, Jamaica, was sentenced to 165 months by United States District Judge Christina A Snyder.

According to a statement from the United States’ Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, a federal grand jury indicted Brown in January 2017, charging him with two counts of conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine, one count of unlawful use of a means of identification, one count of use of a counterfeit access device, and one count of aggravated identity theft.

“At the conclusion of a four-day trial in February 2018, a jury found Brown guilty of all charges,” the statement said.

It outlined that on six occasions between October 2015 and March 2016, Brown paid JetBlue flight attendant Marsha Gay Reynolds, 35, of Jamaica, New York, to transport cocaine and drug money across the country.

“Brown paid her to carry the drugs and cash in suitcases through ‘known crewmember’ checkpoints at LAX and New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport. As a known crewmember, Reynolds was subjected to much lighter screening at airport security checkpoints, and would be able to transport the cash and cocaine without being stopped,” the statement added.

To evade detection by law enforcement, Brown, described as “an illegal immigrant and convicted felon”, used identities he stole from two mentally disabled men, so he could meet Reynolds in the ‘sterile’ area of the airport, past security. While in the airport’s sterile area, he retook possession of the drug-and cash-laden suitcases, and travelled across the country with them undetected.

On March 18, 2016, Brown reportedly supplied approximately 27 kilograms (59.5 pounds) of cocaine to Reynolds. She then attempted to board a JetBlue flight in Terminal 4 at LAX. After showing her official badge and identification to the Transport Security Administration (TSA) officer on duty at the known crewmember checkpoint, Reynolds was randomly selected for additional screening. Reynolds was then escorted to a secondary screening area. Upon arriving at this checkpoint, Reynolds dropped her luggage, removed her shoes, and fled the area, running down an upward-travelling escalator and away from TSA officers.

Reynolds eventually surrendered herself to the Drug Enforcement Administration at JFK Airport on March 23, 2016. She remained in custody while her case was pending, and ultimately pleaded guilty in December 2016 to one count of conspiracy to possess and to distribute cocaine. In April 2018, she was given credit for time served, and was released.

Brown was indicted for the charges in this case while in federal custody for attempting to illegally re-enter the United States in April 2016 following deportation.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Martinique FranceAntilles
