Grant plans to expand Barbados’ footprint in Miami | Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

Barbados’ Consul General to Miami, Rudy Grant, plans to expand the island’s foreign policy footprint in Miami when he takes up his new position in the coming days.

Consul General Grant made the promise on Monday during a meeting with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, at Ilaro Court.

During the talks, they identified tourism and the hospitality sector, climate change, labour, and the blue economy as possible areas for further collaboration with business and industry players in Miami.

Grant raised the issue of seeking other job opportunities for Barbadians outside of the hospitality sector.

On that point, Mottley suggested a hospitality gateway programme, in collaboration with the National Training Initiative and the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, for new entrants and existing hospitality workers to upgrade their skills to take up posts in the future.

The Prime Minister also advised the Consul General to continue discussions with those universities in Florida that are willing to work with the Government on the blue economy and coral reef restoration, with a view to engaging with The University of the West Indies and other agencies to effect this.

Mottley wished Grant well in his new assignment and expressed optimism that there would be new areas of business to advance the country’s economic prospects. Grant leaves the island on Wednesday, July 13.

UK Conservatives cast votes in 1st round of leadership race | Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

Conservative Party lawmakers in Britain are casting ballots Wednesday in the first round of an election to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The internal party contest will replace the flamboyant, scandal-ridden Johnson — a figure famous in Britain and around the world — with a new and much lesser-known prime minister.

Eight candidates have secured the required backing of 20 of their colleagues to make the first ballot. The 358 Tory legislators will vote Wednesday afternoon, with the last-place candidate and any others who fail to get 30 votes dropping off the list. Further rounds of voting will take place Thursday and, if needed, next week.

The final two contenders will face a runoff vote by about 180,000 Conservative Party members across the country. The winner is scheduled to be announced on September 5 and will automatically become prime minister, without the need for a national election.

Few of the contenders have a high public profile. Former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak is the bookies’ favourite and has the largest number of declared supporters, followed by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt.

Treasury chief Nadhim Zahawi, backbench lawmaker Tom Tugendhat, ex-Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch, former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Attorney General Suella Braverman are also on the ballot.

The candidates are jostling to replace Johnson, who quit as Conservative leader last week amid a party revolt triggered by months of ethics scandals. He will remain in office as a caretaker prime minister until his replacement as party chief is chosen.

Mordaunt, at her official campaign launch on Wednesday, said the party had “standards and trust to restore” after the scandal-tarnished Johnson years.

She said voters “are fed up with us not delivering, they are fed up with unfulfilled promises and they are fed up with divisive politics.”

The slate of candidates is strikingly diverse, with four contenders from ethnic minorities and four women. But all are offering similar tax-slashing pledges, with only Sunak offering a note of caution. He has cast himself as the candidate of fiscal probity, saying said the country needs “honesty and responsibility, not fairytales” to get through economic shockwaves from the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

The Ferry Police Station on Mandela Highway in St Andrew has been closed to facilitate renovation.

In an advisory Tuesday, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said the closure is temporary.

The JCF also apologised for any inconvenience the closure of the police station may cause. The $10-million Ferry Police Station Renovation Project was launched in 2021 by then Minister of Transport and Mining Robert Montague.

The project is being executed under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Toll Authority of Jamaica (TAJ), which is funding the engagement.

Among the programmed scope of works are roof repairs, upgrading of offices/workspaces, restrooms and the waiting area, electrical modifications, and a general facelift of the building.

Six of nine charges against Washington Bramble withdrawn

Black Immigrant Daily News

OBSERVER-Six of the charges levied against transgender social media personality, Washington Bramble, for statements made online have been withdrawn. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP

In May, Bramble was slapped with nine charges which fall under the Electronic Crimes Act.

It is said that Bramble uploaded a video and made posts on Facebook referring to Chief Health Inspector Sharon Martin on February 8 and 9 this year.

Bramble allegedly created the first post after health inspectors visited her home in response to a neighbour’s report to the Central Board of Health that Bramble had thrown faeces onto their property.

The next day the accused reportedly posted another message directed at the Chief Health Inspector.

Bramble was taken into custody on March 24 and a search warrant was executed at her home and her electronic devices seized.

After investigating the matter, police charged the 41-year-old Hatton resident with nine charges which included intentionally and without lawful excuse or justification sending electronic messages through video for the purpose of insulting and causing hatred and causing enmity through electronic messages on Facebook on two separate days.

Bramble, who is currently on bail, made her second appearance in the St John’s Magistrate’s Court yesterday and was told that the Director of Public Prosecutions had instructed the police prosecution to drop all of the charges except those relating to insults made.

After doing so, the prosecution informed the court that the file is ready to be served on the defence and that they will be ready to proceed on a subsequent date.

The case was therefore adjourned until September 29.

It is still, however, unclear whether the prosecution will be dealing with the case summarily, meaning in the Magistrate’s Court.

Cops accused of stonewalling as parents try to report incidents of extreme police brutality to Force officials

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

The mother of a Barbudan man who claims he is the victim of police brutality is reportedly finding it difficult to file a report against the officers allegedly involved.

A source alleges that the woman, a police constable, has made several attempts to report the matter to the Professional Standards Unit within the Force and to the Criminal Investigations Department.

However, the source claims, whenever the woman goes to either department, she is referred to the other.

The woman reportedly is frustrated that she can get no help from her colleagues, who appear unwilling to investigate her son’s matter because it involves fellow officers.

The source tells REAL News that the female officer is not well liked by a particular senior officer, and this could be the source of her frustration.

The constable’s son was one of two men who reportedly were badly beaten, a few weeks ago, by police officers stationed on Barbuda.

One of the alleged victims was beaten to the point where he could barely walk. Reportedly, he had to be assisted into court after the Police slapped him with several charges – which the magistrate rejected.

The man, the source says, is now experiencing hearing issues after allegedly being struck in his head by an officer.

The source tells REAL News she is not surprised by the recent reports of police brutality on Barbuda. She claims that both of the officers allegedly involved were transferred to the sister island after certain reports were made against them on Antigua.

It is alleged that one of these officers was accused by a close relative of an immoral act, while the other is reported to have fatally shot a mentally challenged man some months ago.

Meanwhile, the inside source alleges that a resident has accused a senior police officer of brutally beating his son during a fete a few weeks ago.

Reportedly, the father has been unable to get justice for his child, who is now experiencing a serious medical problem as a result of the beating.

REAL News was unable to ascertain whether investigations have been launched into any of these incidents and whether the officers are still on active duty. REAL NEWS

Antigua US$200M bond back on track

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

The Antigua & Barbuda government says “within a couple of weeks” it will have a new subscriber for a US$200 million bond it was forced to withdraw from the international market earlier this year. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATSAPP GROUP FOR NEWS UPDATES.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne also told Parliament that he had not sought to deceive the population when he had earlier announced that the bond had been oversubscribed.

“The fact that we had a subscriber for the full amount and that there is yet another one that will be subscribing for the full US$200 million would have suggested, Mr Speaker, that we would have had at least two entities that would have covered twice the amount of the bonds that were issued,” Browne said.

“Clearly, we did not lie to the people of Antigua & Barbuda. It was oversubscribed and what we are seeking to do here is to get the best deal,” he added.

Browne told legislators that the bond was initially withdrawn after the original subscriber, whom he did not name, had sought a higher interest rate.

“We had a subscriber who after the deal was concluded decided to seek to increase the bond interest rates from about six per cent as effective yield to in excess of nine per cent. Mr Speaker, my Cabinet is a very responsible Cabinet and we deemed it was too expensive to be borrowing US$200 million at approximately 10 per cent and, accordingly, we have withdrawn the bond.” The funds were to be used to construct a hotel at Morris Bay.

“In the next couple of weeks, we should have a new subscriber with a better interest rate,” he added.

Tobago Miss Universe/Trinidad and Tobago aspirants to know fate by end of next week

The Tobagonians who auditioned for the Miss Universe/Trinidad and Tobago beauty pageant last weekend will know by the end of next week if they have been selected for the next leg of the competition.

Stephen Jones, executive director of Crowns & Sashes, said the results of the auditions are usually announced a week after the adjudication process.

He added the team has not yet decided on how the results will be released.

“The details of that in terms of how we do it, whether it’s by a press conference, launch event, social media post, I can’t say that just yet because the team has to decide that,” Jones told Newsday.

Trinidad’s auditions are scheduled to take place on Sunday at the Naparima Bowl, San Fernando from 10 am-6 pm.

Twelve young women from the island auditioned for the competition on Saturday at the Shaw Park Cultural Complex.

But Jones said his team also interviewed several young women at a beach on Sunday.

He said the women had heard about the auditions but could not attend because they were either at work or engaged in other activities.

Jones said the committee also got phone calls from three women who expressed a desire to be at the Trinidad auditions.

“So we are expecting a big turnout. We have about 30-something girls registered online for the Trinidad auditions and it is open.”

Reflecting on Saturday’s auditions, Jones said, “The quality of young women, very high calibre. So we remain very committed to journeying with the community in Tobago over time so that we could develop some more programmes even outside of the pageant season.

He suggested life skills workshops and other initiatives aimed at “going into the communities and seeing what are the gaps that we can help to fill.

“But all of the women that we interacted with did have something very positive to offer and contribute, and we were very, very happy about that.”

However, Jones said competitions like the Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago can be tough.

The women vying to be selected must be between the ages of 18-28, a stipulation of the Miss Universe organisation. They must also be unmarried, without children and exude confidence.

The Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago beauty pageant is being held after a five-year hiatus, but a date for the competition has not yet been set.

The winner of the competition will represent this country in the Miss Universe pageant later this year.

The Executive Director of the Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture has responded to consumer claims of price gouging by some business establishments, declaring that without the evidence, he could not debate any instance.

Brian Louisy spoke on Tuesday during Good Morning Saint Lucia on Hot 7 Television.

The private sector official told programme Host Shannon Lebourne that the business community he represents has no benefit and interest in price gouging.

“They have customers who are loyal. They have a duty and they demonstrated their commitment to that duty during COVID when businesses were closed. The supermarkets, the ti boutiques

were putting themselves and their staff at risk and opening up, not sure what’s happening with the pandemic – who’s infected, and they were serving and providing services,” Louisy observed.

“Why would they turn around now and be unfair to the people?” The Chamber Executive Director stated.

He expressed the view that the price changes have happened a lot, and the price increases have been occurring at a ‘fast and furious’ pace.

As a result, Louisy said people see prices change.

“And they are shocked – like a lot of us, and they think that there’s something untoward happening. But if we look at television, we look at the news, we would see globally that inflation has grown at its highest rate in the last 40 years in the US, in Canada, in Australia, in the UK, in Europe,” he told Good Morning Saint Lucia.

In addition, Louisy explained that the price increases are passed on to consumers.

“It’s really a case of push inflation and because we have a global economy we are feeling it fast and furious,” the Chamber Executive Director stated.
