GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Bangladesh scored their first win on the tour of West Indies with a six-wicket victory Sunday in the first One-Day International (ODI).

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl in a match reduced to 41 overs per innings because of a wet outfield.

The West Indies struggled to get going and posted an unchallenging 149 for nine, with No. 3 Shamarh Brooks leading the scoring with a 66-ball 33.

Tailenders Anderson Phillip (21 not out) and Jayden Seales (16 not out) refused to give up the final wicket, adding 39 runs. Phillip hit his team’s only six of the innings at Providence.

Shoriful Islam took four for 34 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz three for 36 and were the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers.

Bangladesh reached the target with 55 balls to spare, scoring 151 for four in 31.5 overs. Mahmudullah top scored with an unbeaten 41 off 69 deliveries, and Najmul Hossain Shanto hit a 46-ball 37.

Spinner Gudakesh Motie was economical with a return of one for 18 from nine overs.

The second ODI in the three-match series is on Wednesday at the same venue.

West Indies won both tests and the Twenty20 series 2-0.

TRINIDAD AND Tobago’s Nicholas Paul capped off a successful return to the competitive circuit when he defeated reigning Olympic, World and European champion Harrie Lavreysen to win the men’s sprint gold at the Tissot International Cycling Union Track Nations Cup in Cali, Colombia on Sunday.

Paul showed grit and tactical awareness in his two rides against the Dutchman by smartly executing early breaks and using his strength to maintain a timely advantage.

In the first gold medal ride, Paul toyed with Lavreysen but rapidly increased his speed with two laps to go. He victoriously rallied to the end and adopted a similar approach in the second race.

Lavreysen though, did well to catch up to Paul in the second race and almost had him on the line but the photo finish easily separated the pair.

Claiming bronze was fellow Dutchman Jeffrey Hoogland, who bettered crowd favourite, Colombia’s Fontalvo Ortega in straight rides.

This was Paul’s second gold medal of the competition, after he pedalled into winner’s row in the men’s keirin on Saturday.

In the men’s sprint semi-final round, Paul also made light work of Hoogland by disposing of him in consecutive rides. He returned a similar performance against China’s Yu Zhou in heat two of the quarter-final.

Prior to that, Paul trumped Kiwi cyclist Sam Dakin in the 1/8 finals but compatriot Kwesi Browne went down to Lavreysen’s powerful performance.

And in the opening qualification round, Paul, who holds the world record (9.1 seconds) in this event, qualified second fastest of the 20 advancing riders. He clocked 9.503s while Lavreysen topped the field with a 9.461s clocking.

Browne’s time was 16th fastest and he was forced to contest the 1/16 finals against Canadian James Hedgecock, which he won.

Paul’s keirin win on Saturday saw him clock 9.911 seconds in the final to stave off silver medallist Jai Angsuthasawit of Thailand and bronze receiver Sam Dakin of New Zealand.

In the first round, Paul topped heat five with a 9.774s clocking and automatically advanced to the second stage.

Browne contested heat three but placed second behind Colombian Kevin Quintero. He was made to contest the repechage in a final attempt to secure second round qualification.

There, Browne placed second in heat three and did not advance. Only repechage winners earned spots in the next round.

Paul however, won heat two (10.079s) of round two and booked a spot in the gold medal ride, which he won convincingly.

Additionally, TT endurance rider Akil Campbell also captured gold in the men’s elimination race on Saturday. Up to press time on Sunday, he was still competing in the final round of men’s omnium – points race.

However, his overall tally after three of the four omnium events will not see him finish among the medals in this event.

Les pompiers ont été sollicités plusieurs fois ce matin (dimanche 10 juillet), pour des accidents de la circulation, sans gravité entre Rivière-Pilote et Sainte-Luce. Le ballet Virsky sera à l’affiche du 51ème festival culturel de Fort-de-France, les 14, 15 et 16 juillet prochains. Quelque soixante membres de cet ensemble national d’Ukraine sont arrivés cet après-midi (dimanche 10 juillet) en Martinique. 

Alors que la guerre fait rage dans l’est de l’Ukraine, des artistes originaires de ce pays diffusent leur culture à travers le monde. Cet après-midi (dimanche 10 juillet), quelque 60 membres (sur 70) du ballet Virsky sont arrivés en Martinique. Cet ensemble national d’Ukraine sera à l’affiche du 51ème festival culturel de Fort-de-France, les 14, 15 et 16 juillet prochains. Du beau spectacle en perspective avec une plongée en plein cœur de la culture ukrainienne, incarnée par des danses folkloriques aux chorégraphies époustouflantes avec pirouettes et sauts vertigineux.?Les danseurs sont vêtus de costumes colorés typiques pour raconter tout ce qui fait l’âme de l’Ukraine : son peuple, son humour mais aussi son lyrisme et son romantisme.Viktoriia Gulenko, conseillère culturelle de l’ambassade d’Ukraine en France et directrice du centre culturel de cette ambassade, accompagne les danseurs du ballet Virsky. “Je suis ravie d’être ici, je suis très reconnaissante envers l’ambassadeur qui nous permet de participer au festival culturel de la capitale, je remercie également le maire de Fort-de-France pour cette invitation faite à notre groupe national emblématique et unique au monde”.

Pour Viktoriia Gulenko, il est important de sauvegarder la culture ukrainienne et de la montrer au monde entier. “La culture est une arme très puissante”, insiste-t-elle. Nazary Melnyk, 25 ans, et Nataliia Tuiahina, 26 ans, membres du ballet Virsky, abondent dans le même sens. “Nous avons une culture très riche à protéger, nous avons beaucoup de coutumes”, souligne la jeune femme. “C’est le message que nous souhaitons délivrer. Nous formons un front culturel, nous sommes aussi les protecteurs de l’Ukraine”. Mais il est difficile d’oublier la guerre. “Bien sûr, lors de chaque représentation, nous pensons à nos connaissances qui sont parties au front mais également à tous les soldats ukrainiens qui combattent actuellement”, confie Nataliia Tuiahina. “En Ukraine, la situation est très grave. Nous sommes tous témoins des atrocités qui sont commises tous les jours. Il y a des pertes parmi nos voisins, nos amis, nos proches. Et malgré cela, nous sommes là”. Shock after popular security guard killed at gas station in Angels | Loop Jamaica

Shock and grief have engulfed the rural district of Benbow in Guy’s Hill, St Catherine after a popular security guard was shot dead by gunmen at a gas station in Angels outside Spanish Town on Friday night.

The deceased is 35-year-old Edward Willock, otherwise called ‘Junior’, of Benbow district.

The police’s information arm, the Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), reported that about 8:50 pm on Friday, Willock was at a gas station when he was pounced upon by three armed men, who opened gunfire at him.

The hoodlums then fled the scene in a waiting motorcar.

Willock reportedly died on the spot, though the police blotters said he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The police are continuing their probe of the incident.

The murder came a week after the Government did not seek to renew the 14-day state of emergency (SOE) in St Catherine, which reportedly resulted in an 81 per cent drop in murders in the parish.

As news of Willock’s death spread, several persons took to social media website, Facebook, to condemn the killing and express sadness at the tragic development.

“R.I.P. Edward Willock,” wrote Facebook user, Alicia Gyles, who also posted a photograph of the deceased.

“He (Willock) was one of our best security officer(s). Condolences to his family. Our prayers are with them,” commented Clement Amos on the photograph.

Gloster Knight shared: “Jah Jah. Still can’t believe seh di man really gone tpc. Smh… Condolences to the family at this time.”

Peter Abrahams said: “Can’t believe this man. I stop and buy gas yesterday (Friday) evening and we talk(ed), and to hear this, it’s hard. You was a good person. RIP.”
