Barbados Cultural Ambassador and former calypso king His Excellency Dr The Most Honorable Anthony ‘Mighty Gabby’ Carter is impressed with the talent in this year’s Scotiabank Junior Monarch Competition.

“I think that people should come out and see the youngsters because they are good, they are really really good.”

Speaking to Loop News on Wednesday, July 6 at the Frank Collymore Hall where he attended a lunchtime concert in support of the junior monarch finalists, Gabby said there were at least five or six contestants who stood out to him.

He lauded them for piecing together such great work in a short space of time.

“I feel so good because they are at least five or six that are outstanding like the War Zone song because it different, it pacy and the little boy used the stage, and the microphone effect at just ten years old, that was fantastic! Then remember these children had no time to prepare, this is the shortest time they ever had dealing with the junior monarch.”

Gabby also congratulated the organizers as he encouraged the public to attend the show next Saturday July 16th.

“You have to thank Kevin Moore and Stefan Walcott and all if the parents and everybody who really put in a great effort to make sure that this kind of standard is exhibited. I think that people should come out and see the youngsters because they are good, they are really really good.”

“I am happy that so many came here this morning and this afternoon and I can tell you that these children are going to lift their game at the finals so expect really good stuff.”

University of the West Indies Open Campus is hosting a social mediathon with the hope of raising US$500,000 to provide scholarships for regional youth. The event is carded for July 30 on Open Campus’ Instagram, Facebook and YouTube channels as well as UWI TV.

The event was launched on Thursday.

In attendance was Antigua and Barbuda governor general Sir Rodney Williams, Barbados president Dame Sandra Mason, and former governor general of St Lucia Dame Pearlette Louisy.

Speaking at the event, alumni officer Sandra Griffith-Carrington said, “The Open Campus endowment fund was birthed because of the difficulties faced by our students. Moreover the story of this one student was the catalyst for this alumni legacy initiative.”

The student in question was in her final year and desired to be the first person in her family to attain a university degree. The covid19 pandemic exacerbated her family’s financial difficulties. She lost her part-time job in tourism, her parents lost their construction business and her father succumbed to the virus. She sought help from the alumni relations office and was given assistance.

Open Campus pro vice-chancellor and principal Dr Francis Severin said the social mediathon was one of many ways for the institution to raise funds for its endowment fund which provides scholarships for Caribbean students and grants for its developmental projects.

“As a socially responsible institution we must consciously respond positively to the plight of both internal and external clients with compassion and resourcefulness. At the Open Campus we are proud of our investment in and engagement with or Caribbean Community.”

The mediathon involves various forms of entertainment drawn from across the region. Promotional messages and messages from the alumni’s patrons will also be shown on the night of event.

For help with making contributions to the endowment fund, contact openphilanthropy@alumni.uwi.edu.

Opposition Senator Wade Mark. –

Describing statements made by opposition senator Wade Mark in Parliament as “reckless diatribe” and “flights of fantasy” in a release on Thursday, Minister of Finance Colm Imbert defended First Citizens Bank and its investment into Jamaican-based investment holding company Cornerstone.

Imbert said, “Senator Mark alleged without a shred of evidence, other than regurgitating unfounded insinuations in the newspaper, that FCB had invested in hundreds of millions of dollars in what he described as an unknown, over-leveraged, fly-by-night company involved in a Ponzi scheme.”

He said Barita’s publicly available 2021 annual report indicated it had assets of J$90 billion (US$600 million).

Finance Minister Colm Imbert. –

“A simple internet search will also reveal that as of July 2022, Barita is one of the top five largest companies listed on the Jamaican stock exchange.”

The release said Barita’s 2021 annual report also gave details on Cornerstone’s organisational structure.

“The truth is that FCB’s 7.4 per cent shareholding in Barita is currently worth J$7.91 billion (US$52.73 million). FCB paid J$5.85 billion for Barita’s shares and made a profit of J$2.06 billion or US$13.7 million on the purchase. Therefore, the purchase has paid handsome dividends for FCB.”

The release also said FCB invested less than ten per cent of the value of Cornerstone’s shareholding in Barita, and made a capital gain of $TT90 million through the investment.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar. –

The issue of the vacancy of the deputy director of the Police Complaints Authority has been sent to the Leader of the Opposition for consideration.

The Prime Minister said on Thursday he signed off on the correspondence from the Office of the President on July 1 and forwarded it to the Opposition Leader.

The five-year contract of Michelle Solomon-Baksh came to an end on June 28. This position needs the joint advice of the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader. If they fail to agree, President Paula-Mae Weekes will make the appointment.

The PCA is the only independent civilian organisation which has the power to investigate serious acts of misconduct by police officers including fatal police shootings. In the last week, four people were shot dead by police, including two teenagers and a man at Independence Square, Port of Spain on July 2.

Rowley, at the post-Cabinet news conference on Thursday, said the PCA continues to operate in the absence of the deputy director and the matter is expected to go before the President soon.

BRITISH High Commissioner Harriet Cross was unfazed by Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement of his resignation as Conservative Party leader on Thursday after about 50 secretaries, ministers and other officials had resigned from his Cabinet including Chancellor of the Exchequer (equivalent to Minister of Finance) Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid.

Expectations are that Johnson would also resign as prime minister in the coming weeks, even as voices such as Sunak and Javid expressed a lack of confidence in him.

Cross, in a brief statement texted to Newsday on Thursday, basically said the various arms of governance in the UK were continuing, unaffected by Thursday’s developments.

“The Conservative leadership election is not the same as a General Election: Parliament continues to sit and government business continues.

“Boris Johnson remains Prime Minister until a new leader of the Conservative Party is elected.

“The Government has the confidence of the House of Commons and retains its full powers.”
