Students of the St George Secondary School were recently given a chance to put business and entrepreneurship theory into practice, with the support of a donation by Sagicor.
On October 26, the school recognised “Business Day”, one of the several activities hosted in celebration of the educational institution’s 50th anniversary. On that day, students from the school’s entrepreneurship programme were given the opportunity to market and sell products made at the school.
“Business Day” also coincided with their Open Day, where the general public was encouraged to visit and participate in activities planned to recognise the milestone.
In thanking Sagicor for its support of the initiative Principal of the St George Secondary School, Dennis Browne said, “the aim of the initiative is to help the students to develop and execute a business plan, whilst giving them practical experience of concepts taught in the classroom and preparing them to become future businesspersons and entrepreneurs. This donation was used as the start-up capital to ensure the students had what materials they needed.”
Paul Inniss, Executive Vice President and General Manager with Sagicor Life Inc, said initiatives such as this are needed to expose the future generation to real world concepts and situations, to better prepare them for future success.
“At Sagicor, we are committed to protecting the future of our clients and partners, however, there is nothing to protect if nothing has been built. We therefore see it as our responsibility not only to help maintain what has already been built, but also to support efforts to foster the future growth and development of Barbadians and Barbados as a whole”, said Inniss.
“Initiatives such as these therefore need the support of corporate Barbados, as well as our guidance and input when appropriate.”

Les autorités ont communiqué les chiffres de la situation sanitaire liés à la propagation du COVID 19. Selon l’Agence Régionale de Santé, 366 nouveaux cas ont été recensés contre 325 la semaine dernière. La prédominance du sous-lignage BA.5 d’omicron se poursuit.
Ce mercredi (16 novembre), les autorités ont communiqué par voie de communiqué de presse les nouveaux chiffres de contamination à la Covid-19.
Les contaminations
Du 7 au 13 novembre 2022, le nombre de nouveaux cas positifs dépistés sur le territoire a diminué.
Il est de 366 nouveaux cas positifs dépistés sur le territoire contre 325 la semaine dernière.
Depuis le mois de Juin, une co-circulation des sous-lignages BA.2, BA.4 et BA.5 du variant Omicron est observée sur l’archipel avec une prédominance de BA.5
Le taux de positivité est de 14,4 % .
Le R effectif est de 0,89.
Deux clusters ont été déclarés.
Deux sexagénaires sont décédés dans des établissements de santé en Guadeloupe. On compte du 1er mars au 13 novembre 2022, 93 décès COVID en établissements de santé en Guadeloupe
Les hospitalisations
Au 15 novembre:
-9 patients adultes COVID sont hospitalisés en médecine conventionnelle.
– 34 patients sont hospitalisés en réanimation : 1 se trouve en réa COVID au CHUG, 33 sont hospitalisés en réa non COVID (soit 1 au CHBT et 32 au CHUG).
– 21 se trouvent sous oxygène à domicile (stable).
La vaccination
Au 15 novembre, on comptait 394 295 injections de:
-1ère dose : 46,19 %
– 2ème dose : 44,10 %
– 3ème dose : 26,76 %
8 560 adolescents de 12 à 17 ans ont reçu la 1 ère injection et 8 134 ont reçu la 2 ème injection à ce jour en Guadeloupe
295 premières doses de vaccination et 231 deuxièmes doses ont été enregistrées en Guadeloupe chez les enfants de 5 à 11 ans.
Recommandations de la préfecture
Face à la circulation virale toujours très active, la Préfecture de Guadeloupe tient à faire quelques rappels:
-Il est fortement recommandé de maintenir les gestes barrières et de porter un masque en particulier pour les personnes fragiles et vulnérables. Cette recommandation vaut également pour tous dans les lieux clos où la concentration de personnes est importante et lors de grands rassemblements, y compris en plein air ;
-S’isoler en cas de signes évocateurs de l’infection et se faire tester au moindre doute que l’on soit asymptomatique ou cas contact. Les personnes fragiles doivent continuer à se protéger.

La justice a annoncé mercredi trois nouvelles condamnations à mort à l’encontre de manifestants en Iran, où six personnes ont été tuées la veille lors du mouvement de protestation contre la mort de Mahsa Amini, qui est entré dans son troisième mois.
La nuit de mardi à mercredi a connu des scènes de violence dans plusieurs villes alors que les manifestants marquaient le troisième anniversaire de la répression meurtrière d’un autre mouvement, déclenché en 2019 par la hausse des prix du carburant.
Depuis le 16 septembre, la République islamique est secouée par une vague de manifestations après la mort de Mahsa Amini, une Kurde de 22 ans arrêtée pour infraction au code vestimentaire strict qui oblige les femmes à porter le voile islamique en public.
Les autorités qualifient la plupart des manifestants d’”émeutiers”, instrumentalisés par des puissances étrangères. Plus de 2.000 personnes ont été inculpées selon la justice iranienne.
La justice a infligé mercredi la peine capitale à trois personnes inculpées pour leur implication dans les manifestations, a affirmé l’agence de l’Autorité judiciaire Mizan Online, portant à cinq le nombre de condamnations à mort depuis dimanche.
L’une de ces personnes a foncé sur des policiers avec sa voiture, tuant l’un d’eux, la deuxième a blessé un garde avec une arme blanche et la troisième a tenté de bloquer la circulation et “semer la terreur”, selon les actes d’accusation.
Malgré la répression, la mobilisation ne faiblit pas dans les rues.
“On se battra”
“On se battra! On mourra! On récupèrera l’Iran!”, criaient des dizaines de manifestants autour d’un feu dans la nuit à Téhéran, selon une vidéo diffusée mercredi par le média en ligne 1500tasvir.
Dans une autre vidéo vérifiée par l’AFP, des membres des forces de l’ordre semblent tirer depuis un quai de métro sur des personnes sur le quai d’en face, provoquant des cris et des chutes.
Au Kurdistan iranien (nord-ouest), d’où est originaire Mahsa Amini, “les forces du gouvernement ont ouvert le feu” sur des manifestants dans plusieurs villes et trois d’entre eux ont été tués, deux à Sanandaj et un à Kamyarana, a déclaré mardi soir à l’AFP l’ONG de défense des droits humains Hengaw, basée à Oslo.
Un appel à trois jours de mobilisation entre mardi et jeudi avait été lancé pour commémorer le “Novembre sanglant” de 2019, lorsque des manifestations avaient entraîné des violences meurtrières dans de nombreuses villes.
L’agence de presse officielle Irna a indiqué que deux Gardiens de la Révolution et un paramilitaire avaient été tués mardi lors de manifestations dans les villes kurdes de Boukan et Kamyaran (nord-ouest) ainsi qu’à Chiraz (sud).
Au moins 342 manifestants ont été tués dans la répression du mouvement, selon un nouveau bilan diffusé mercredi par Iran Human Rights (IHR), une ONG basée à Oslo.
“Torture physique et psychologique”
Ce chiffre comprend au moins 123 personnes tuées depuis le 30 septembre dans la province du Sistan-Baloutchistan (sud-est), après des manifestations provoquées par le viol présumé d’une jeune fille par un policier.
Selon IHR, au moins 15.000 personnes ont été arrêtées, un chiffre démenti par Téhéran.
Dans la province de Fars (sud), 110 personnes, dont 18 femmes, ont été arrêtées mardi pour avoir bloqué des routes, endommagé des biens publics et lancé des pierres contre les forces de sécurité, selon Irna.
“Les manifestants n’ont pas accès à des avocats lors des interrogatoires, ils sont soumis à de la torture physique et psychologique pour qu’ils fassent de faux aveux et sont condamnés sur la base de ces aveux par des tribunaux révolutionnaires”, a déclaré à l’AFP le directeur de IHR Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam.
Il a dénoncé les condamnations à mort de manifestants, caractéristiques d’un “régime oppressif”, et dit craindre “des exécutions de masse”.
A l’étranger, le président français Emmanuel Macron a salué “le courage et la légitimité” de la “révolution des femmes et de la jeunesse iranienne”, après la réception de dissidentes le 11 novembre à l’Elysée fustigée par Téhéran.
A Londres, le patron des services de renseignement britanniques, Ken McCallum, a mis en garde mercredi contre les “menaces directes” posées par l’Iran, qu’il accuse de chercher à “kidnapper ou tuer” des Britanniques “perçus comme des ennemis du régime”.

Les nouveaux prélèvements effectués par l’Ars et le Smeag à l’usine de La Plaine permettent une reprise de la consommation de l’eau dans la commune de Trois-Rivières.
Le Syndicat Mixte de Gestion de l’Eau et de l’Assainissement de Guadeloupe a publié un communiqué informant sles usagers de la commune de Trois-Rivières au sujet de la consommation de l’eau courante.
Suite au renouvellement du charbon actif à l’usine de La Plaine et aux prélèvements réalisés respectivement par les équipes du Smeag et par l’Ars les 24 et 25 octobre 2022, les résultats d’ analyses reçus le 11 novembre 2022 indiquent que la qualité de l’ eau distribuée est de nouveau conforme aux normes de potabilité.
L’Ars informe donc, par courrier reçu hier (15 novembre 2022), que la consommation de l’eau est de nouveau autorisée dans la commune.

Jamaican bodybuilder Duvaughn Dick has charted a pathway to the prestigious Mr Olympia stage and he is doing so with the support of family and friends and WATA.
Over the years, WATA has invested heavily in squash, athletics, swimming, and Jamaica’s senior football teams through a long-term partnership with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).
Bodybuilding appears to be the brand’s most recent affiliation with fitness since supporting Dick for the past few years.
He’s been on this inspirational journey for four short years, and 2022 has proven to be his best season yet after copping the bronze medal in ‘Men’s Classic Bodybuilding’ during the CAC Fitness Championships.

Most recently, WATA sponsored the bodybuilder’s expenses to represent Jamaica at the 2022 CAC Fitness Championships in Barbados.
This, was shortly after the businessman, student, and fitness athlete won two categories – ‘Classic Bodybuilding’ and ‘Heavyweight’ at the Jamaica Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships (JABBAF) earlier in July.
“My journey was not easy,” he shared in an interview recently. “I have tried to lose weight multiple times over the years. I would lose 20 lbs here, 30 lbs there but it would come back eventually. In 2018, I made the decision that I wanted to do better, I wanted to look better.”
He later weighed in close to a whopping 330 lbs but now consumes two gallons of WATA each day.

“I knew what worked for me, which was a low-carb diet so I just did that, found a way to make it easy. As long as it’s something that’s manageable it can be consistent and consistency is what it really takes so I tried to fit in things I like into my diet and kept it low carb for the most part; did that consistently over time.”
Over the next 14 months, he lost 100 pounds… “I looked back at pictures, didn’t like what I saw and wanted to do better for myself,” he said.
Dick holds a degree in physical therapy from the University of the West Indies and is currently studying for a doctorate degree in physical therapy.
He also runs a physical therapy business. Together, they make for a challenging lifestyle but one that has so far reaped solid rewards.
“Running my own business plus pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy with a school in Minnesota, being able to juggle that while winning two national titles and going on to represent Jamaica it really makes me feel proud of myself to do all of that at the same time. It has been very stressful but I was able to get it done with the help of my family, Wisynco and WATA.”
“WATA has been a big supporter over the years… even outside of bodybuilding they gave me support when I volunteered as a physical therapist for the Jamaica Association of Sports Medicine. We went out to Western Jamaica in Montego Bay to provide screenings at a health fair for underserved high school athletes.”
Dick hopes WATA will continue to back him as he continues his sojourn to the very pinnacle of the sport as he is already making moves to take his career to the next level.
“Since last year I have been working with Loleta Riley out of Florida. I have her in my corner helping me to get to the next level. I want to win the overall title Mr Jamaica, win the CAC title for my country and go on to the pro ranks,” he said.
“I finish school in May and I can fully focus on bodybuilding after. My dream is to be on the Olympia stage where only the best of the best qualify.”

Maradona ‘Hand of God’ World Cup ball sold for $2.4m Loop Jamaica

LONDON (AP) — The ball punched in by Diego Maradona for his “Hand of God” goal at the 1986 World Cup has been sold at auction for nearly $2.4 million by the referee who missed football’s most famous handball.
Ali Bin Nasser, the Tunisian former match official who refereed the quarterfinal game between Argentina and England in Mexico, owned the 36-year-old Adidas ball that was sold at Graham Budd Auctions in London for 2 million pounds ($2.37 million) on Wednesday.
Bin Nasser said before the auction he felt it was the right time to share the item with the world and expressed hope the buyer would put it on public display.
The Maradona goal that gave Argentina a 1-0 lead in that match against England — but should not have been allowed — has become part of football legend.
Maradona jumped as if to head the ball but instead punched it past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton. Maradona quipped afterward that it was scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God,” leading to its iconic name.
Speaking ahead of the auction, Bin Nasser said: “I couldn’t see the incident clearly. The two players, Shilton and Maradona, were facing me from behind.
“As per FIFA’s instructions issued before the tournament, I looked to my linesman for confirmation of the validity of the goal — he made his way back to the halfway line indicating he was satisfied that the goal should stand. At the end of the match, the England head coach Bobby Robson said to me, ‘You did a good job, but the linesman was irresponsible.’”
Maradona scored a brilliant second goal against England only four minutes later with the same ball — the only one used in the quarterfinal. He ran nearly 70 metres from his own half and weaved his way past half the England team before slipping the ball past Shilton to make it 2-0. That goal was voted the World Cup Goal of the Century in 2002.
Argentina won the game 2-1 and went on to lift the World Cup. Maradona died in 2020 at the age of 60. The upcoming World Cup in Qatar, which starts Sunday, will be the first since Maradona’s death.
The jersey worn by Maradona against England was sold in May for $9.3 million, at the time the highest price paid at auction for a piece of sports memorabilia. That was beaten by a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle baseball card, which went for $12.6 million in New York in August.
