The United Workers Party of Saint Lucia stands in solidarity with the United Workers Party in the Commonwealth of Dominica in its decision to boycott the general election called on 6th December 2022 by PM Roosevelt Skerrit, despite the fact that Election Reform is needed to facilitate free and fair elections.

Prime Minister Skerrit has completely disregarded the will of the people with the announcement of snap elections before electoral standards have been put in place.

Sir Dennis Byron, former President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), had been tasked with preparing a report on Dominica’s electoral reform, which the Prime Minister promised to table in Parliament.

Recently, Byron had written to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, as well as the Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, indicating that he was “working towards expediting the presentation of my Recommendations for the improvement of the Electoral Process in the Commonwealth of Dominica”.

Despite this, the government of Dominica has reneged on the promise of election reform which stood as a priority to the people of Dominica during the last election.

Although a schedule of timelines for the improvement to the electoral process, the draft Registration of Electors Bill and draft Registration of Electors Regulations, are with both the government and Opposition for review the government has chosen to subject the people of Dominica to the same inadequate and unjust electoral processes that existed in the last election and to which Dominicans raised strong objection. Without the promised electoral reform, aren’t Dominicas being deprived of their democratic right to due process and fair elections ?

We support and encourage the Dominica Opposition United Workers Party’s to stand firm in its commitment to ensuring the electoral process meets election standards.

Anything less is than firm adherence to the tenets of a well functioning democracy is regressive.  It is imperative that our region continues to strengthen its democracy.

Offset and Cardi B Reunites With Quavo At Emotional Funeral For Takeoff

Black Immigrant Daily News

Offset, Cardi B, and Quavo shows unity at an emotional funeral for Takeoff on Friday.

It’s a somber day in hip-hop as Migos rapper Takeoff’s life is honored at his funeral, and many of his fans, friends, and family members pay their final respects to him.

Takeoff was shot and killed on November 1 in Houston, Texas. Houston Police are still to arrest anyone for the rapper’s murder.

On Friday, fans and friends of Takeoff remembered the rapper and some of his family members, including his cousin Offset and his wife Cardi B, were seen getting ready to attend his funeral at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

In photos shared on Friday morning, Cardi B and Offset are seen heading to their vehicles to the funeral venue. Cardi B is seen wearing a fitted black dress with her hair in a conservative ponytail and wearing minimal makeup. Offset is also dressed in full black and appears to be waiting on his wife. He is seen wearing a black coat and wearing dark glasses and also appears to be smoking.

Before Takeoff’s death, there was speculation that Cardi B and Offset were not on good terms with Takeoff, who along with his uncle Quavo, broke away from the Migos to form a duo. The rappers were last seen together in early 2022, and by July, they were suspected of having broken up.

Cardi and Offset had stopped following both Quavo and Takeoff on social media, and it became apparent that the family members were not on good terms as Offset also launched his solo career while Takeoff and Quavo set out as a duo called “Unc & Phew.”

While neither Cardi nor Offset has spoken on the apparent split of Migos or the reason behind it, shortly after Takeoff’s death, both of them appeared to react.

Offset has changed his DP to Takeoff and later to a photo of all of the Migos members. Fans felt that he was not only mourning his cousin but showing support for Quavo who has been blamed for the shooting that took the life of Takeoff.

Cardi B also liked an article where the Migos members spoke about being family and how important that was for them to work together.

Rushawn Patterson charged with Slickianna’s murder Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

The St James Police have charged 33-year-old Rushawn Patterson, otherwise called ‘Chizzie’, of a Harvey River in Hanover, with the murder of 35-year-old social media influencer, Aneka Townsend, otherwise called ‘Kayan’ or ‘Slickianna’.

Townsend’s body was retrieved by the Marine Police from the sea in the Reading area of St James on October 21, 2022.

A post-mortem examination on her body, conducted on November 5, concluded that her death was caused by strangulation.

The police said in a release Friday that the post-mortem estimates that Townsend was killed some time between 11pm October 20 and 9am October 21.

“During the course of this investigation, an abundance of forensic, cyber-forensic and other technological evidence has been collected. Following consultations with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the JCF Legal Services Division, Patterson was formally charged with murder this afternoon (November 11, 2022),” the police said in its release.

According to the police, on October 20, Townsend travelled from Kingston to Montego Bay, St James, where she was picked up by Patterson at approximately 7:30pm.

During the course of the evening, they visited a restaurant in Hanover and a guest house in St James, the police said.

At some point during in the night, an argument developed between them, which resulted in Patterson allegedly strangling Townsend and disposing of her body.

The police said, too, that 47-year-old security guard, Rohan Rose, otherwise called ‘Early B’, was charged with misprision of a felony in relation to the same matter.

“In the three weeks since the investigation into her death began, the St James and Hanover police have conducted a high-level investigation that has benefitted from the support of the Area 1 Operational Support Team, the Communication Forensic & Cybercrime Division (CFCD), the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the Technical Services Division (TSD), the Specialised Operations Branch, the Jamaica Defence Force, as well as Jamaica Eye,” the polie said.

Patterson was arrested on November 2 during a high-level, intelligence-driven operation.

The police said he was later charged in relation to an unrelated case of assault that occurred in the St Andrew South Police Division.

“This charge is stemming from an incident that occurred in 2018, where he was alleged to have physically assaulted a female after a jealous rage. That matter will be mentioned in the Kingston and St Andrew parish court,” the police said.

The police also said that investigations are ongoing as it is suspected that Patterson may have been involved in other incidents similar to those for which he has been charged.

Detectives are, therefore, appealing to the public for any information that may assist in the investigations. Persons may contact the Montego Bay CIB at 876-684-9080, Crime Stop at 311, Police Emergency at 119 or the nearest police station.

CoP Jacob not proud of US advisory, but maintains: Crimes being solved

Acting Police Commissioner McDonald Jacob says while he hoped TT would not rank as high in certain categories of crime, it was important to avoid misinterpreting global crime rankings.

On Wednesday a US State Department’s travel advisory called on Americans to reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago because of crime.

Responding to the advisory during a media briefing at the Police Training Academy, St James, on Friday, Jacob said he was not proud of the advisory.

Referring to global crime rankings given to different countries on websites, he said one such website placed Trinidad as being number 14 for murders and number six for other serious crimes.

He urged the public to consider that these crime rankings were generated as a result of arrests and charges brought by the police.

“It is not just looking at the crimes that are committed, but we are looking at the crimes that the police may solve.

“Let us say we hold 600 people for firearm possession, that will be counted because we charged.

“If we hold a lot of people for fraud offences or solve a lot of fraud offences, it will be there (on the website), so we are number six and we understand that.

“We would not like to be number six, we would like to be lower, but they look at the general numbers.”

Jacob also urged the public to be careful when interpreting and repeating the figures presented, as without context they could do more harm than good.
