MINORITY Leader Kelvon Morris says the THA is failing to capitalise on the many gains established in the tourism sector during the reign of the former PNM-led administration.

On Wednesday, Tobago won the silver award for Most Desirable Island from Wanderlust Travel Magazine at the World Travel Market in London, England.

Wanderlust Travel magazine’s editor-in-chief and CEO George Kipourus presented THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine with the award.

Wanderlust is one of the UK’s leading independent travel magazines. Each issue highlights exciting destinations and experiences off the beaten path.

In a WhatsApp statement on Friday, Morris said he welcomed Tobago’s silver award from Wanderlust Travel Magazine.

“I certainly agree that Tobago is in fact a most beautiful and desirable island to travel to.

However, he said it was important to note that this is just one of many prestigious travel awards Tobago has consistently won over the years.

He added, “It confirms that the strategies adopted by the previous PNM administration continues to attract international attention and accrue meaningful benefits for Tobago.”

But Morris claimed the international tourism awards Tobago received over the years has not resulted in any significant benefits for the island under the Farley Augustine-led regime.

“Going forward, however, my concern has to do with the fact that, with this administration, the awards received have not translated into any significant benefits for the island.”

Saying that almost two weeks have passed in November, Morris said Tobago has yet to receive cruise ship arrivals to the destination. He also noted that Virgin Atlantic is no longer flying to Tobago.

Morris said although Augustine led a team to the WTM “there were no real tangible achievements that gives one any hope that this administration can turn around their poor performance in the short and medium term.

He claimed even their efforts to bring Grenadians to Tobago for carnival had failed.

“Therefore, while this (silver award) is good news for Tobago, Farley and his administration has nothing to celebrate on the cusp of their one-year anniversary as it relates to tourism.

“Rather, it is really the efforts of the previous administration and the resilience of the stakeholders during the past years that has brought Tobago this prestigious recognition.”

Morris said the work of former chairman of the Tobago Tourism Agency Ltd (TTAL) Dr Sherma Roberts and former CEO Louis Lewis and their respective teams must not go recognised.

“Undoubtedly, the strategic roadmap that was implemented during the previous administration resulted in continuous incremental growth in tourism arrivals from 2017-2019.”

He added the former administration also pursued strategic product development initiatives such as the new ANR Robinson international terminal in an effort to boost airline access and arrivals, the stalled Sandals project at Buccoo Estate and the ongoing Marriott hotel development project at Rocky Point to improve the room stock on the island.

Pinelands women’s football team produced an outstanding and commanding display to be crowned the Barbados Football Association (BfA) Women’s Super League Plate champions.

Last night at the BFA Wildey Turf, the Pine ladies defeated Mavericks SC 3-1 to bring glory to the Pine and earn the club’s first national female football title.

A brace from Tekoa Hope in the 35th and 56th minutes set up Pinelands perfectly for victory.

Second half substitute Chazelle Cumberbatch took a corner from the right which found unmarked center back Rowland Kirton-Browne who directed her right foot shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

In the BFA Republic Cup third-place playoff encounter between southern neighbours Vanpur Malt Wotton FC and Dover Market/Phillips Bakery Paradise FC, the Dover boys easily brushed aside their opponents 6-1.

Raheim Sargeant, employed in a new role, scored twice to spearhead the Paradise attack in the absence of captain and national forward Armando “Sugar” Lashley.

Sargeant scored his first goal in the 11th minute when he scored from the penalty spot. His cross from the left struck the arm of Wotton defender Zico Phillips and referee Edwin Adams awarded a penalty kick.

Wotton found themselves two goals behind in the 18th, as an instance of miscommunication occurred between goalkeeper Liam Brathwaite and defender Mario Farrell, which resulted in Brathwaite coming off his line to deal with a cross and Farrell heading the ball beyond the oncoming custodian, and into the goal.

Captain Kyle Gibson cut Paradise’s lead in half in the 21st minute.

Jabarry “Papi” Chandler’s freekick from just outside the penalty area was parried away by Paradise’s goalkeeper Jason Boxhill, but Gibson reacted quickly to strike the ball into the back of the net from close range.

Paradise restored their two-goal lead in the 48th minute when Sargeant ran onto a well-weighted pass from Ackeel “Apple” Applewhaite and placed the ball precisely into the bottom, right corner, beyond the outstretched hand of Brathwaite.

Deighton Griffith student and national under 17 forward Shamari Harewood came off the bench to score in the 70th and 76th minute, making it 5-1.

Jamaican international Mario Palmer scored Paradise’s sixth goal in stoppage time to confirm their third-place position in the Republic Cup.

Les secours ont retrouvé dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche le corps sans vie d’une victime dans les décombres de deux immeubles qui s’étaient effondrés samedi matin en plein centre de Lille, probablement celui d’un médecin porté disparu.

Selon le commandant des opérations de secours, Stéphane Beauventre, “il y a beaucoup de convergence pour qu’on soit sur la personne qu’on recherchait depuis ce midi”, un médecin de 45 ans, qui s’était vu prêter un appartement dans l’immeuble pour le week-end.

“Son corps est parti à l’institut médico-légal. Il sera clairement identifié par la suite”, a-t-il précisé.

La victime a été localisée peu avant 1h30 du matin, a indiqué une source policière. La préfecture a confirmé la découverte d’une personne décédée.

Deux immeubles de trois étages, dont l’un était en travaux, s’étaient écroulés samedi vers 9H15 rue Pierre-Mauroy, une artère commerçante du centre-ville, mais la plupart des habitants avaient pu être évacués grâce à l’alerte lancée par l’un d’eux quelques heures plus tôt.

Plusieurs responsables politiques avaient initialement indiqué qu’il n’y avait “a priori” pas de victimes, avant que les pompiers annoncent être à la recherche de ce médecin dont la voiture était garée sur place et qui ne s’était pas présenté à ses rendez-vous.

Une autre personne, légèrement blessée, avait pu être évacuée au-dessus des décombres samedi après midi, selon les secours.

“Levée du dispositif”

“On vient de refaire passer les chiens pour une dernière levée de doute. On va procéder a la levée de l’ensemble du dispositif”, a précisé dans la nuit le lieutenant-colonel Stéphane Beauventre. “La scène maintenant est figée pour le procureur.”

Le parquet de Lille a indiqué à l’AFP avoir ouvert une enquête pour “mise en danger de la vie d’autrui” et diligenté “une expertise judiciaire”.

Selon le ministre délégué au Logement, Olivier Klein, qui se rendra à Lille lundi, cet immeuble n’était pas “frappé d’insalubrité”. 

Une dizaine de personnes avaient été évacuées quelques heures avant l’effondrement, a expliqué la maire socialiste de Lille, Martine Aubry, présente sur place samedi matin.

C’est un des habitants, rentré chez lui à 3h00 du matin, qui a donné l’alerte, après avoir constaté “que l’immeuble avait bougé”.

“On n’arrivait plus à ouvrir la porte, on entendait des gravats tomber”, a raconté à France Bleu Nord ce jeune homme, Thibault Lemay, qui a aussitôt prévenu les secours.

La police municipale et les pompiers ont décidé d’évacuer un bâtiment, l’autre semblant vide, estimant “qu’il y avait un vrai risque” a indiqué Mme Aubry.

“J’en tremble encore, car si cette nuit ce monsieur n’était pas rentré à 3h00 du matin et ne nous avait pas joints (…) il y aurait des morts”, a-t-elle déclaré, avant l’annonce qu’un riverain était porté disparu. Elle a précisé avoir pris “un arrêté de péril imminent”.

“Chance incroyable”

“Je ne dormais pas encore quand les pompiers ont commencé à tambouriner sur les portes, mais j’ai cru que c’était des fêtards et je suis resté au lit”, a raconté à l’AFP un autre habitant, Benjamin Lopard, 35 ans.

“Quand les policiers sont arrivés, j’ai réalisé que c’était sérieux”, poursuit le jeune homme, qui est parti vers 5h30 avec ses papiers, son ordinateur et une tenue de rechange. “Je réalise maintenant la chance incroyable qu’on a eue”, dit-il: sans cette évacuation “on serait tous dans des boîtes en bois”.

Le ministre de l’Intérieur Gérald Darmanin, a remercié sur Twitter “l’étudiant qui a, cette nuit, donné l’alerte”.

Les bâtiments avoisinants ont été évacués samedi matin “par précaution”, et le périmètre avait été sécurisé par de nombreux policiers, tandis que des bâches ont été installées pour empêcher les passants de voir les opérations en cours. 

Après la tombée de la nuit, les pompiers ont continué à fouiller sous la lumière de puissants projecteurs dans les gravats, un mélange poussiéreux de briques et de poutrelles en métal, restes d’un échafaudage sur la façade du bâtiment, dans lesquels ont pouvait distinguer un escalier et des huisseries en équilibre.

“On a entendu un bruit de quelques secondes, tout doucement au début. On a pensé que c’était l’échafaudage qui tombait”, a raconté à l’AFP Ludovic Ficher, 30 ans, qui travaille dans un immeuble mitoyen.

“Quand on s’est rendu compte que c’était tout l’immeuble qui était en train de s’effondrer, on est tous partis en courant”, a-t-il ajouté. “J’ai eu la peur de ma vie.”

Le parti démocrate a remporté samedi le siège qui lui manquait pour conserver le contrôle du Sénat des Etats-Unis, une victoire décisive pour la suite de la présidence de Joe Biden, qui enterre définitivement les espoirs républicains de “vague rouge”.

Quatre jours après les élections de mi-mandat, les médias américains ont déclaré la victoire de la sénatrice démocrate Catherine Cortez Masto dans l’Etat clé du Nevada.

La sortante a battu de justesse Adam Laxalt, un candidat soutenu par l’ex-président Donald Trump, selon des chaînes de télévision américaines.

Sa réélection porte à 50 sur 100 le nombre d’élus démocrates au Sénat, ce qui permet au parti de Joe Biden de garder la main sur la chambre haute du Congrès. En vertu de la Constitution, la vice-présidente Kamala Harris a en effet le pouvoir de départager les sénateurs.

Les démocrates pourraient encore gagner un siège dans l’Etat de Géorgie, où un second tour sera organisé le 6 décembre.

Les républicains, qui n’ont pas réalisé le raz-de-marée escompté lors de ce scrutin traditionnellement défavorable au parti au pouvoir, semblent toutefois en mesure de redevenir majoritaires à la Chambre des représentants.

Ils devraient s’en servir pour lancer de nombreuses enquêtes parlementaires sur l’administration de Joe Biden, ou ses proches. 

Mais sans le Sénat, ils ne pourront pas adopter de lois contraires à ses objectifs, notamment sur l’avortement ou le climat, ni bloquer ses nominations de juges, ambassadeurs et responsables gouvernementaux.

De plus, leur victoire s’annonce nettement plus courte qu’annoncée. La chaîne NBC News projetait samedi matin une frêle majorité de cinq sièges pour les républicains avec 220 élus contre 215 pour les démocrates.

Près de 20 scrutins n’ont cependant toujours pas donné leur verdict, principalement en Californie.

Portés par une forte inflation, les républicains ont longtemps cru avoir un boulevard devant eux pour reprendre les deux chambres lors de ce scrutin traditionnellement difficile pour le parti au pouvoir.

Revers pour Trump

Leurs résultats décevants font monter l’agitation parmi leurs élus au Congrès, augurant de possibles règlements de compte.

Dans une lettre révélée par Politico, plusieurs sénateurs trumpistes demandent de reporter le vote pour élire leur chef au Sénat prévu la semaine prochaine, semblant défier le ténor Mitch McConnell qui souhaite être reconduit à ce poste.

“Nous sommes tous déçus qu’une +vague rouge+ (la couleur de leur parti, nldr) ne se soit pas concrétisée, et il existe plusieurs raisons à cela”, écrivent-ils en souhaitant ouvrir un débat à ce sujet.

La fin des illusions républicaines pour le Sénat représente un revers pour Donald Trump, qui devrait annoncer mardi qu’il sera candidat à l’élection présidentielle, sa troisième tentative.

Déjà, vendredi, les démocrates l’avaient emporté en Arizona, où le sortant Mark Kelly avait battu le républicain Blake Masters, qui avait reçu le soutien appuyé de l’ex-chef d’Etat, et qui n’a toujours pas reconnu sa défaite.

Piqué par ce revers en Arizona, qui s’ajoute à d’autres échecs de ses poulains, le milliardaire républicain a de nouveau crié à la “fraude électorale” refusant d’admettre le verdict des urnes, comme il le fait depuis sa défaite à la présidentielle de 2020.

Même si son influence sur le parti républicain reste indéniable, il sort de fait fragilisé des élections de mi-mandat et semble vouloir agir vite pour couper l’herbe sous le pied de ses rivaux.

Parmi eux figure le gouverneur de Floride Ron DeSantis, réélu triomphalement et nouvelle star de la droite dure.

Son succès n’a pas échappé au milliardaire, qui a enchaîné cette semaine piques et moqueries contre celui qu’il surnomme “Ron-la-Morale”.

Et, hasard du calendrier ou non, mardi sera aussi le jour de la sortie des mémoires d’un autre concurrent possible de Donald Trump, son ancien vice-président Mike Pence.

Gunman held hours after shooting cop Loop Jamaica

A policeman was shot and injured by a gunman in the vicinity of Innswood traffic light along Old Harbour Road, St Catherine on Friday.

Reports are that a few hours after the attack on the lawman, the alleged perpetrator was held when he turned up at the same hospital where the policeman was taken, for medical treatment,

The accused shooter, a 42-year-old man, was positively identified and arrested on the grounds of the medical facility.

Reports are that two policemen a corporal and a constable were traveling in an unmarked car and stopped at the Innswood traffic light where they observed a man jumping from a white coaster bus on the right side of the road, armed with a firearm.

Reports are that the man pointed the gun in the direction of the policeman and opened gunfire.

The police returned fire resulting in the man fleeing on foot.

After the gunfire subsided the police constable observed that he received a gunshot wound to his right thigh.

He was assisted to the Spanish Town Hospital by Spanish Town police unit.

While at the hospital, a man said to be the accused shooter turned up suffering from gunshot wounds to his abdomen and right hand, he was positively identified as the man who fired at the police.

He was placed under police guard at the medical facility while he received treatment.

‘Enough is enough’: Transport operators could withdraw service Monday Loop Jamaica

President of the Transport Operator Development Sustainable Service (TODSS) Egerton Newman is advising commuters across the island to make alternative preparations for transportation to work and school, as operators intend to withdraw their service on Monday.

Newman said a number of issues affecting operators, some having to do with government policies, financing and ticket amnesty, have converged to the point where they feel that a total withdrawal of their service would effectively demonstrate their point.

“Enough is enough. We cannot take it anymore,” Newman said in a five-minute voice note circulated by him.

It listed the grievances of the transport operators. He called the gas assistance announced by the Finance and Public Service Minister Dr Nigel Clarke a political stunt as those who applied for the subsidy were rejected because of their licence.

“It is regrettable from all directions that the minister of finance would make such an announcement that he would be giving the transport sector $600 million in grant facilities for their challenge in buying fuel. To date, since that announcement was made, less than 2,000 persons received that $25,000 grant,” Newman pointed out.

He said that it is unfortunate that it was never meant to be, as thousands of applicants started receiving messages informing them that they were not qualified for the grant.

“The government used it as a political stunt to revive the sector, but it hasn’t. It has made us worse because many of us were depending on that money.

“All we can see on our phones is that we are not qualified or licence that we have with Transport Authority, renewal every year or every four years, our licence nuh good; we don’t have a valid licence,” he said.

The transport operators are livid that some $200 million that was allocated by the government to provide loans to them to improve their vehicles is being offered at a 14 per cent interest rate.

Additionally, those applying for the loan would have to reportedly traverse a web of bureaucratic red tape, which includes proof of a pattern of banking before the application can be considered.

“The system is not set up where the common taxi man can go to the bank every week. It is not there. It is the same with the JUTC [Jamaica Urban Transit Company], it is the government who has to give them money. So where should the taxi man get it from?” he asked.

Newman has also been calling for a traffic ticket amnesty for some time now.

“With all of this on our shoulders, we have asked for an amnesty, and they can’t give us one. Mark it down; come Monday morning, all taxi drivers across the length and breadth of Jamaica that have outstanding tickets beware. Don’t go to work Monday morning,” he said.

First Vice President of the Association Tyrone Lowe chatted with Loop News this week ahead of the week of activities planned to get diabetics and pre-diabetics more educated while getting more allies and supporters in the community.

MISSING PERSON

The family of 29 years-old Jowana Lee of Swetes Village is concerned as to her whereabouts and is appealing to the public for assistance in locating her.

Jowana was reportedly last seen around 10:00 am on Wednesday 9th November, prior to her leaving home to go to Liberta.

A report of her disappearance was made at the All Saints Police Station by a family member around 7:30 pm on Saturday 12th November.

Several efforts were made to contact her by phone, but have proven unsuccessful.

She is described to be approximately 5ft-5 inches in height with dark complexion and short dreadlock hairstyle.

Anyone with information as to her whereabouts can contact the All Saints Police Station at 460-1000 or the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913.
