The Ministry of Transport, Works and Water Resources advises the travelling public that the rock bluff at Jordan’s, St George is being cut and as a result, the road has been reduced to one lane.

Motorists are urged to slow down, approach the corner with caution, and obey persons directing traffic as there may be some delays along that road. The work, which commenced Monday, November 7, is estimated to last approximately two weeks. When completed, the corner will be widened and there should be improved visibility for motorists.

The Ministry of Transport, Works and Water Resources apologises for the inconvenience and thanks the public for its patience.

Sagicor sponsors first-ever Barbados Deaf Calypso Project Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Sagicor continues to show its support for the deaf community in Barbados, with its sponsorship of The Barbados Deaf Calypso Project 2022.

The leading insurance and financial solutions provider made a financial contribution to the Barbados Council for the Disabled to assist with the execution of the project, which was developed with the aim of creating awareness, access and opportunities for people who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Featuring international and local performers, the project includes a series of events, beginning with “An Evening with WaWa”, an inspirational session on empowerment conducted by American Deaf Rapper, Warren “WaWa” Snipes; followed by an AudioVisibility Workshop; a musical workshop conducted by deaf musician and music educator from the United Kingdom, Ruth Montgomery, the creative mind behind the Calypso Project.

The project comes to a climax with the Calypso Sunset Concert & Art Exhibition on Wednesday, November 9 at the Frank Collymore Hall, a first of its kind stage show and photography exhibition featuring local and international deaf musicians and performers, sharing the stage with hearing musicians.

Paul Inniss, executive vice president and general manager with Sagicor Life Inc, said the decision to support the project was an easy one, especially given the company’s focus on providing support to disadvantaged groups on the island.

“Recently we would’ve announced our support of the Deaf Heart Project, which was selected as the beneficiary of our Helping Hands Programme, a corporate social responsibility initiative focused on assisting non-governmental organisations”, he said. “Both projects are working towards increasing awareness, access and opportunities for the deaf community, an effort that we are certainly in favour of and happy to support.”

Dear men: Here are 5 tests you need to get Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

Why would you bother going to the doctor if you aren’t sick? Generally, men avoid going to the doctor, skip more suggested screenings, and only go when they are really ill. They tend to spend more years of their lives in poor health than their female counterparts and have a five-year shorter life expectancy.

Preventive checks, or health screenings, are important to discover diseases before they become symptomatic and when treatments are most successful. Many men ignore their prescribed annual physical checks, which get increasingly dangerous as they age.

Here are the five screenings all men should be getting.

Cholesterol screening

High cholesterol is a major issue in men, thus men over the age of 20 should have their fasting lipoprotein profile evaluated every four to six years. This medical test examines your levels of good (HDL) and bad (LDL) cholesterol to identify if you are at an increased risk of heart disease. For men over the age of 40, every five years is a decent rule of thumb to follow, unless you have consistently high cholesterol readings that necessitate more frequent testing.

STD test

It’s a good idea for a man to get tested for STDs as soon as he starts having sexual relations. Many STDs go unnoticed for years, even after a man has been in a monogamous relationship or has been celibate for a long period. This screening is strongly advised for young men in their teens and twenties, as well as men of any age who have had unprotected sex with a new partner with an unknown sexual history. In addition, depending on your level of sexual activity and the number of partners, many doctors will advise you to get tested for HIV on a regular basis.

Colonoscopy

Colon cancer is deadly cancer for men. A colonoscopy is advised every ten years beginning at the age of 45 for persons at average risk of colon cancer. Due to an increase in colon cancer among younger persons, the American Cancer Society recently reduced the age for a standard first colonoscopy from 50 to 45. The doctor uses a scope to examine the inside of your colon during this surgery. This screening can not only detect cancer, but it can also prevent it if pre-cancerous cells are discovered and eradicated.

Liver enzyme test

Liver enzyme testing is part of routine blood work and tests for liver damage caused by a variety of factors, including alcohol. After all, men consume more alcohol than women on average. It is critical for males to have these enzymes tested since they can become elevated as a result of over-the-counter medications, alcohol intake, inflammatory illnesses, thyroid abnormalities, obesity, and various toxicities.

PSA test/Digital rectal exam

Prostate cancer affects approximately 1 in every 8 men during their lives. The PSA blood level test, together with digital rectal exams (DREs), is the most effective approach to diagnosing prostate cancer. Every man between the ages of 50 and 70 should have a yearly checkup. PSA testing should begin at the age of 40 if a man has a family history of prostate cancer or unknown history.

Ja’cans among 4 charged with importation of ganja in boat Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

Three Jamaicans are among four men charged after the boat in which they were travelling was intercepted by the Cayman Islands Coast Guard on Saturday.

All four are charged with being concerned with the importation of ganja.

They appeared in court on Monday 7 November and the Jamaican nationals were remanded in custody, while the West Bay man was offered bail. The four will next appear in court on 6 December.

One of the parcels of ganja recovered by the police.

According to a statement from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, shortly after 12:00am on Saturday, 5 November, while on patrol, the crew of a Cayman Islands Coast Guard vessel observed a fishing canoe-type vessel approaching the northern coastline of West Bay.

Upon seeing the Coast Guard vessel, the canoe-type vessel attempted to evade the officers but was soon stopped and brought under control.

An initial search of the vessel revealed the presence of several large packages containing suspected ganja, totalling over 500lbs.

The three men who were aboard the vessel, Jamaican nationals ages 35, 42 and 57, were arrested on suspicion of importation of ganja.

RCIPS officers conducted searches of the shore in the vicinity and discovered a fourth man, age 40 of West Bay, who was in possession of several fuel drums.

He was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the importation of ganja. The others were subsequently arrested.

Two held after cops seize firearm and ammunition in Hanover raid Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

Two people now have 15 years or more hanging over their heads after they were arrested by the police during an operation that also led to the seizure of a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol in Hanover on Monday.

Police said three magazines and 20 rounds of ammunition were also confiscated during the targeted joint police/military operation.

Two people are now being questioned in connection with the find.

Their arrest comes two days after a two-week gun amnesty came into effect following the approval of the Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction, and Regulation) (Firearms Amnesty) Order 2022 by the Senate.

The amnesty is slated to end at midnight on Saturday, November 19.

The government has also warned that the gun amnesty will, in no way, impede the police from carrying out their regular duties as if a person is caught with the firearm he will be charged the same way as he [would] be charged… the day after the amnesty”.

The Government said the amnesty is the last opportunity for those who hold or are in possession of illegal firearms or ammunition to avoid significant sentences and forms an important milestone in Jamaica’s fight against illegal guns.

He urged those possessing illegal firearms or ammunition to make full use of the amnesty.

DOMINICA: Main opposition boycotts general election

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Statement by the United Workers Party On Announcement by the Prime Minister on the Holding of General Elections

The United Workers Party views with disappointment and dismay the pronouncement by the Prime Minister to hold a “snap” General Election on December 6, 2022.

This call for national elections is seen as an outrage to all Dominicans, especially the residents of the East of the country who were reeling under the impact of a natural disaster.   On the night when the country was expected to hear the Prime Minister lead the call to support those affected, Mr. Skerrit decided to place his personal interest ahead of the country.

This announcement must be condemned by all Dominicans as an affront to our democracy and an insult to our people.   Dominicans cannot be asked at this time to participate in another national election without meeting at least two basic election standards:

A clean Voters List reflecting the persons who can legally vote; and
National ID Cards available to all the legitimate voters.

The Caribbean Court of Justice, the APEX court of this country, in a written Decision that in its opinion “…there remains areas of grave concerns about how the process of these elections (2019 General Elections) was conducted.  Future Elections in Dominica ought not to proceed with these or similar taints…”

At the end of the 2019 General Elections, the Imminent Jurist, Justice Sir Dennis Byron was engaged by Skerrit’s Cabinet as a sole Commissioner to present the necessary amendments to our laws to Reform the Electoral Process.

Over the past months, the United Workers Party has been in constant dialogue with Sir Byron who informed the Party of his intentions to expedite the presentation of his recommendations.

Since Mr. Skerrit has another two and a half years remaining on his current mandate as Prime Minister and sufficient time to implement the long-awaited reform of the electoral process, then there are no justifiable reasons why he should be calling a “Snap Election” other than an abuse of power.

In the circumstances therefore, the United Workers Party has taken a decision not to participate in this fraudulent Election and therefore calls on His Excellency Charles A. Savarin, the President of the Commonwealth of Dominica to revoke the calling of election by the Prime Minister.

We are convinced that the Electoral Reform as demanded by the Dominican population is needed to facilitate free and fair Elections in the Commonwealth of Dominica.
