We are 19 days away from experiencing sporting history, as the first winter FIFA World Cup kicks off in Qatar from November 20 until December 18.

Tunisia, also known as the “Eagles of Carthage” have been a consistent figure in regional and international football since the late 90s.

Between 1998 and 2006, Tunisia qualified for three successive World Cups and won the 2004 African Cup of Nations championship.

After 15 matches, Tunisia has secured just two victories, while amassing nine defeats and two draws. A less than flattering record and explains their reason for never advancing beyond the group stage.

DLP leader launches petition, slams Barbados National Day Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The leader of Barbados’ second largest political party is petitioning Government’s decision to replace Independence Day with Barbados National Day.

Dr Ronnie Yearwood, president of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), has launched a petition on change.org, citing that the decision was “hasty and unwanted”. In an official statement on the DLP social media pages, Dr Yearwood contended that the country’s transition to a parliamentary republic was ” nothing but a baseless Mia Mottley Vanity project”.

He added that the move from Independence Day to Barbados National Day was a selfish attempt by the Barbadian Prime Minister to leave a legacy, while negating the national significance of November 30 to citizens.

“Independence is more than a word to Barbadians. It’s a source of pride. The day the iconic Broken Trident was raised to signify our break away from England. The birth of our national anthem penned by Irving Burgie and the pledge written by Lester Vaughn. We will not allow these moments to be erased.

We will not stand by as this Prime Minister tries to graffiti her way onto history’s page yet again by forcing another unwanted change onto the people of Barbados,” Dr Yearwood insisted.

He continued: “We are not combining Independence Day celebrations with Republic day celebrations. We are strict guardians of our heritage and we will not allow Mia Mottley to jockey her self-entitled legacy on the backs of those who came before her.

It doesn’t matter if you call it Barbados National Day or Barbados Republic Day, we do not want it if the plan is to rename Independence Day. The solution is to keep Independence Day and we will celebrate as we always have.”

The leader of the DLP argued that many citizens were still lost about what it meant to be a republic, therefore, Government’s focus should be on educating the public and not solely on celebrating.

“From the beginning of this process, the focus has been on Celebration, not Education. People cannot truly celebrate something they do not fully understand,” Dr Yearwood maintained.

Former DLP leader recommends fixed general election dates Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The former leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) is recommending that fixed-term elections be enshrined in the new Constitution of Barbados.

Verla De Peiza, made the proposal at the Constitutional Reform Commission public meeting on Sunday, October 30. De Peiza led the DLP from 2018 until her resignation in January this year.

Speaking to the Commission at the Alexandra School, De Peiza held that the Constitution should firmly address elections in Barbados. She stressed that fixed-term elections should be implemented so that the announcement of election day will not be to “the whim and fancy” of the governing political party.

“I think we have reached a stage where we need to be speaking firmly about how we manage our elections and one of the ways the constitution can address that, outside of legislation, is to have fixed term elections.”

“It is not a new concept but one which we need to take seriously so we do not have again…the whim and fancy entering into something as serious as our political determinations.

” If it were that we knew when elections are then we would know what we are working towards. I think one of the fallouts of having a knee jerk reaction is that only that one person [the Prime Minister]…knows when the election day will be, for the rest of us it is sprung upon us,” maintained De Peiza.

She added that this arbitrary system contributed to the decline in voter turnout earlier this year. In the January 2022 elections, less than 45 per cent of registered votes went to the polls.

“One of the fallouts for a system like that is exactly what we saw in January this year, where we took note for the first time but really it is has been a phenomenon for the last four and five elections, and that is a declining presence of voters participating in the elections because there was an arbitrariness to it.”

St. Kitts and Nevis Observes CARICOM Energy Month 2022 Under the Theme: “Our Future is Electric”

Black Immigrant Daily News

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 01, 2022 (SKNIS): The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis joins its CARICOM counterparts to observe CARICOM Energy Month which is observed annually in November to increase awareness of energy consumption and to encourage energy-saving actions. This year’s focus is on creating an all-electric future.

Minister of Energy, the Honourable Konris Maynard, reflected on the theme: “Our Future is Electric” noting that it positions the Member States to move away from total dependence on fossil fuels to using more mixes of renewable energy.

“This theme is meant to highlight the need for us to produce 100 percent of our electricity from renewable sources and convert all our energy end-use to electricity. In our case, that would mean ending our dependence on fossil fuels such as diesel for power generation. Instead, we will now be looking to power our electric grids from Solar, Wind, Geothermal, and other forms of renewable sources. It will also mean doing all our cooking using electric stoves and using electric vehicles as our means of transport,” said Minister Maynard.

Minister Maynard said that although “achieving an all-electric future will, no doubt, be challenging,” it will definitely prove beneficial.  He outlined a few requirements needed to achieve an all-electric future.

“First, we will become more dependent on the electricity grid. This will require that the grid be reliable, secure, resilient, and accessible. Second, this will increase the demand on the electricity grid, which will require that we have ample access to renewable energy sources. This will require a substantial amount of financial, human, technical, legislative, and other resources to help us meet our 100 percent Energy Independence Goal by at least 2030,” said the Energy Minister.

He added that the “journey has started,” and St. Kitts and Nevis has achieved some notable milestones along the way.”

“There is a 2.2 megawatts (MW) wind farm that has been in operation in Nevis since 2001. A 0.75MW solar PV Farm was commissioned at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport in 2013 and a 0.5 MW Solar PV Farm in the vicinity of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank round-a-bout in 2016. The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank also commissioned 1MW of Solar PV installations between 2020 and 2021.

Added to these are several residual and commercial premises with rooftop solar PV panels,” he said. Important to note, Minister Maynard said that the “customs service charge and import duties are currently exempted on imported alternative energy equipment.  Additionally, regulations, procedures, and incentives are being drawn up for commercial, industrial, and domestic owners of rooftop Solar PV and Wind Turbines. When fully implemented, these initiatives should encourage persons to install and invest in alternative energy plants.”

Four Bills to be Read on Friday

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation

Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, November 2, 2022: Four Bills will be read at the Sitting of National  Assembly which takes place on Friday 4th November at 10:00am at Government Headquarters.

The four bills to be read are the Companies (Amendment) Bill 2022, the Evangelistic Faith Church  Incorporation Bill 2022, the Small Business Development (Amendment) Bill 2022, and the Domestic  Violence (Amendment) Bill 2022.

The Companies (Amendment) Bill resolves a constitutional issue created by the 2021 Amendment  which allowed for the permanent dissolution of exempt companies to comply with Organisation for  Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and European Union (EU) recommendations. The  Bill seeks to allow creditors, directors, shareholders and other interested persons to apply to the  High Court to deal with any assets previously held by the struck exempt companies. The Bill  therefore seeks to bring the Act into compliance with the Constitution, so that assets are not vested  in the State without alternative options available to the beneficial owners of those assets.

The Evangelistic Faith Church St Kitts (Incorporation) Bill seeks to give the Evangelistic Faith Church  situated at the Alley, Sandy Point, St Kitts, the power to own land and otherwise have legal standing.

The aim of the Domestic Violence (Amendment) Bill is to make urgent changes to protect victims of  domestic violence and provide them with swift access to justice. The Bill allows victims of domestic  violence, or persons on their behalf, to apply to the Magistrate’s Court or the High Court for  protection orders. This will rectify issues raised with the Ministry of Gender Affairs that the cost of  obtaining protection orders only in the High Court was prohibitive for many victims and their  families. The Bill also expands the definition of economic abuse to cover situations where  perpetrators have full access and control over victim’s financial resources and gives the Director of  Gender Affairs powers under the Act, rather than the Director of Social/Family Services, as  previously legislated. The approval of this Bill aligns with the Cabinet’s promise to take steps to  curtail the increased scourge of domestic violence in our society.

The Cabinet Small Business (Amendment) Bill seeks to change the Minister with responsibility for  administering the Small Business Act and appointing the Small Business Development Advisory Committee to the Minister with specific responsibility for Small Business. Previously, the Minister  responsible was the Minister of Industry & Commerce. The definition of small business will also be  amended to include businesses in which not more than 30 persons are employed. Previously, the  number of employees was limited at 25. This decision aligns with the Government’s fundamental  goal to provide small businesses with the necessary governmental support to grow, thrive and  employ more people.
