‘Kenny was an angel’.

Those were the simple yet poignant words on one placard when devastated medical students took their anger, frustration and heartbreak to the street in honour of their friend left critically injured in a road accident.

American University of Antigua (AUA) students are demanding justice and urgent overseas treatment for Kenneth Mathew, who suffered a severe brain injury in the October 23 incident in Friars Hill Road.

Mathew, a 21-year-old first semester medical student from Dubai, and pre-med student Priyanjana Das, 19, had been crossing the recently resurfaced highway after leaving a university party at Stratos Bar and Lounge when they were struck by a car said to have been driven by Karim Edwards.

The 45-year-old accountant allegedly initially fled the scene before later handing himself into police. He appeared before court on Friday morning charged with dangerous driving, was stripped of his driving licence and bailed.

Police previously said they anticipated Edwards would be charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

But yesterday, Head of the Police Traffic Department, Rodney Ellis, told Observer, “You have 24 hours to report an accident; this individual returned to the scene within an hour.”

Today, Mathew – who had planned to dedicate his life to helping others – lies motionless in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with brain injuries that his friends say are likely irreparable.

Das suffered such severe damage to her right arm that it was amputated. Sources told Observer yesterday that she was “doing better” but remained “traumatised” by the loss of her dominant limb.

Her parents are by her hospital bedside and are also in need of “emotional support”, the source added.

Several of Mathew’s friends took part in Friday night’s demonstration. Another banner bore the frank statement: ‘You ruined their lives’.

Their visit to the scene of the tragedy also unearthed the heart-wrenching discovery of the remains of Mathew’s watch – as broken and shattered as its owner.

Poignant discovery: Students found the remains of Kenneth Mathew’s watch on the highway (Photo contributed)

“We found it where the accident was,” one student told Observer. “We kept it.”

Plans remain underway to fly both students overseas for specialist care not available locally.

Das’ parents are in the process of arranging airlift for her.

Mathew’s friends previously made desperate pleas for him to be flown out of the country swiftly, saying “every hour matters to save his life”.

Meanwhile, AUA has been offering counselling to students in the aftermath of the incident.

Last week, the university issued a statement thanking the public for its “tremendous show of support” for the injured pair, adding that AUA was doing everything possible to assist both the victims and their loved ones.

Franz responds: THIS is why, Gaston Browne!

THIS is why, Gaston Browne!

It is alarming, mind blowing and unfortunate that —  at a time in this country when working-class people under this government cannot get paid; when elders can’t get their Social Security pension on time; when the price for food is skyrocketing; when residents can’t get water in their pipes; when the health care system is crumbling; and when the infrastructure of the country is falling apart – the only consideration of Prime Minister and chief policy-maker Gaston Browne is why I have returned to the country of my birth, whey me nable tring bury…

Well, since you ask, I will tell you: I have come to fight for the liberation of my community and my country from vagabonds and exploiters like you and Cutie Benjamin, possibly the worst leaders the Caribbean has ever seen.

I was socialized and trained by both my parents — whom I know — to love, cherish and serve others.

I have taken that knowledge and lived in the wilderness of another man’s land to accomplish my greatest achievement: raising and educating both my children, who I know are mine.

I have learned much from serving others around the world, and I will now apply that experience to the development of my Nation.

You have been in political leadership for decades and Prime Minister for the past eight years, and you have  served only yourself, using your family, and your cronies. No one will remember your name when the people remove you from office. Your name will be obliterated form the books of history. Your generations will suffer because of your idiocy.

Now, I have received the call and have answered – to free the people of City South and serve my Nation. There is no higher work to which I can devote my life.

My task is to mobilize my brothers and sisters, the citizens and residents of this country, and collectively drive the proverbial bullbud in your tail.

We will then, as a people, march to our promised land; a land that we will develop for all the people:  those born here and those who have made this country their home. We will repair and build a nation in which all our people can grow, thrive, prosper; a land of which our children yet unborn can be proud.

I am going to be the thorn in your flesh.  I am going to remind the people how nasty, greedy, wicked, bad minded, and treasonous you are. I am going to drive the bullbud under your tail.

I pledge to expose the criminal industrial complex over which you and your cronies preside. We will ALL soon know the source of your sudden wealth.

Nothing you do or say will deter me.  I will continuously use my platforms to share ideas, educate, inspire and develop our people while you spew hate; slander the names of citizens and residents of this country; and bully your weak Cabinet colleagues.

I have been called for a time such as this, and no weapon formed against me will prosper; so come, try me, cause ebry bully hab dem cooler.

ACP Sealy Underscores Need For Continuous Police Training – St. Lucia Times News

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr. Mashama Sealy has stressed the need for continuous training of police officers who face hazardous situations in civilian clothing or uniform daily.

Sealy spoke last week at the end of an officer post-probationary course.

She explained that training and knowledge are essential.

According to the senior police officer, they help determine success or failure and provide the required skills to avoid dangerous situations and do what is right in mediating situations.

“It is not just a matter of merely surviving a course,” Sealy stated.

“But instead, it is about appropriating the skills, knowledge and abilities and practices that were passed on to you during the course which must become second nature to you as police officers,” she told course participants.

“Knowledge is not only power, but it is also the key to effectiveness, efficiency, productivity and success,” Sealy asserted.

“You decide how effective you are as a police officer based on the implementation and the application of knowledge provided to you during this course,” she said.

However, Sealy observed that training and education are more than merely sitting in a classroom and earning a certificate.

She said the application of the new-found knowledge the course participants had gained would help to maintain efficiency and proficiency, which must be continuous.

Sealy encouraged the officers to perform their duties professionally and not allow distractions to cause them to stray from what is right.

She congratulated the officers on completing the course.

And Sealy looked forward to the participants being the best at their department duties.

“You are the future of our organisation,” she declared.

Dominica’s Anichi Resort & Spa Provides A 2% Annual Return While Under Construction

Black Immigrant Daily News

News Americas, Roseau, Dominica, Mon. Oct. 31, 2022: Anichi Resort & Spa will be providing a 2% annual return to investors despite being under construction. The management of the much-anticipated five-star luxury resort and spa in Dominica has said that the project is in full swing, and that once construction is completed, annual returns will be based on the resort’s operation.

Following an official update, an estimated 70% of the project is now complete; this includes the flooring as well as an extensive electricity infrastructure. The resort is being built on 12 acres of land, with 128 rooms. I will host world-class amenities, such as a lagoon swimming pool, an infinity pool, restaurants, a business centre and many others. Overlooking a picturesque beach, the resort will tastefully blend its modern architecture with the landscape’s tropical foliage.

Developed by Oriental Developers (Caribbean) Ltd, the resort will form part of the Autograph Collection, a premium international brand developed by renowned hotelier Marriott International. This links the resort to more than 100 luxury lifestyle hotels across 30 countries and territories – all of which have been constructed as part of Autograph Collection Hotels. Furthermore, Anichi Resort will be managed by Highgate, a dominant player in major US gateway cities with a growing footprint in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Anichi Resort & Spa is also one of the premium real estate options approved by the Dominican government’s Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme. The CBI Index of 2022, published by the PWM Magazine of the Financial Times, recognises it as the “World’s Best Citizenship by Investment Programme”. The minimum investment threshold for Anichi Resort & Spa is $220,000 (USD), an expenditure which also comes with lifetime Dominican citizenship and property ownership.

The resort will bolster the tourism sector and generate extensive employment for locals. The country already occupies a notable position, ranking first among 25 other Caribbean islands – winning due to its lush green jungles, hot springs and striking black-sand beaches. Annually, scores of investors fly to Dominica owing to its large number of government-approved investment projects. The Citizenship by Investment Programme of Dominica allows these individuals to purchase freehold shares in government-approved properties.

Anichi Resort & Spa provides investors and CBI applicants with a Return on Investment (ROI) as well as a route towards diversifying their portfolios and planning their wealth

The Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, praised the CBI Programme, “Thanks to the real-estate investment option of the Citizenship by Investment Programme,” he noted, “the country is catching the attraction of travel-enthusiasts and is now known for [its] luxury tourism offering. Under the Citizenship Programme, investors looking to expand their real estate portfolio have the opportunity to invest in established luxury hotel brands and villas.”

Dominica’s real estate investment option has long provided premium, luxury projects for investment. A prior example of this is Secret Bay, a real estate property which paid out more than $1 million (USD) in returns to investors. The Residences at Secret Bay also promises great returns, having drawn more than 100 Citizenship by Investment (CBI) owners. The resort has already won a number of awards, and it is anticipated that Anichi Resort & Spa will likewise be counted as one of the jewels in Dominica’s real estate crown.

Anichi Resort promises to be a meaningful asset during this time of global uncertainty. CS Global Partners, a legal consulting firm working in the investment citizenship field, noted that, beyond the resort’s world-class architecture and lush surrounding environment, “[t]he project also brings in interest from investors keen to participate in the development through Dominica’s Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Programme. Once completed, the resort promises to transform Dominica’s tourism sector while also boosting employment for the local community”.

Concurrently, Dominica is witnessing the construction of several other hotels, including a Hilton hotel, which will also fall under the government-approved real estate investment options of the country’s CBI programme. Many of these properties are being built to be sustainable and climate-resilient, with the continued construction of such resorts and hotels positioning the island as a top destination for eco-luxury resorts.

Dominica’s real estate is thus proving to be a popular option among investors and high net-worth individuals (HNWIs). Bolstering investment is the strength of the country’s CBI programme. The credibility and trustworthiness of Dominica’s programme has been maintained since its launch almost three decades ago, and it has been ranked the world’s best CBI programme for its sixth consecutive year. Alongside alternative citizenship, the Citizenship by Investment Programme of Dominica provides a number of other opportunities to investors. These include:

The ability to become a global citizen and be part of a global community transcends Dominica’s land borders.

The ability to hold multiple citizenships.

A citizenship that is granted for life and can be passed on to future generations.

An opportunity to provide families and children with a peaceful, stable, safe and welcoming home.

Access to countless business opportunities, with the option of portfolio diversification.

Enhanced opportunities for wealth planning and expanding business overseas.

A stable currency, with Dominica’s currency, the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD), pegged to USD.

These factors, combined with alternative citizenship, present individuals with a rich array of business and personal advantages. As the success and promise of the Anichi Resort & Spa attest, the island along with its CBI programme offers investment with unrivalled returns.

A businessman who is a licensed firearm holder, helped to foil a robbery along Mountain View Avenue at the intersection with Stanton Terrace in St Andrew on Saturday afternoon.

Reports are that the businessman saw a robbery being committed by two men at the intersection, and intervened.

The men robbed the victim of a phone and ran, and the licensed firearm holder gave chase.

Another businessman soon joined the chase, and the men were found hiding in a gully.

They were reportedly found with several cellular phones.

The Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the police’s information arm, confirmed that the Stadium police took two alleged robbers into custody.

The police theorised that the men were on a robbery spree because of the number of phones they had in their possession.

Of the two suspects in custody, one is said to have been on the police’s radar and is known to be from Rockfort in East Kingston.

Formal charges expected to be laid against the two men after the police’s investigations are completed.

Suspension bridge collapse kills at least 133 in India Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Military teams were searching Monday for people missing after a century-old cable suspension bridge collapsed into a river Sunday in the western Indian state of Gujarat, sending hundreds plunging into the water and killing at least 133 in one of the country’s worst accidents in years.

As families mourned the dead, attention was turning to why the bridge, built by the British in the late 1800s and touted as an “engineering marvel,” collapsed and who might be responsible.

The local government had awarded a 15-year contract to maintain and manage the bridge to a Morbi-based company, Ajanta Manufacturing Pvt Ltd, mainly known for making clocks, mosquito racquets and electric bikes.

It reopened the bridge, which spans a wide section of the Machchu river, on October 26. That’s the first day of the Gujarati New Year, which coincides with the Hindu festival season, and the newly reopened attraction drew hundreds of sightseers.

Sandeepsinh Zala, a Morbi city official, told the Indian Express newspaper the company had reopened the bridge without first obtaining a “fitness certificate.” That claim could not be independently verified, but the state government said it had formed a special team to investigate the disaster.

Authorities said the structure collapsed under the weight of hundreds of people. Security footage of the disaster showed bridge shaking violently and people trying to keep hold of its cables and green-coloured metal fencing before the aluminum walkway gave way and crashed into the river.

Visuals from the disaster site showed the bridge split in the middle and the metal walkway hanging down, its cables snapped in places. At least 177 survivors were pulled from the river and teams from the army, navy and air force were looking for others still missing, said Jigar Khunt, an information department official in Gujarat.

State minister Harsh Sanghvi told reporters that 133 people were confirmed dead and many others were admitted to hospitals in critical condition. Emergency responders and rescuers worked overnight to search for the survivors. Most of the victims were teens, women and older people, he said.

It was not immediately clear exactly how many people were on the bridge when it collapsed but survivors said it was so densely packed that the crowd was unable to quickly move to safety when its cable began to snap.

“There were just too many people on the bridge. We could barely move,” Sidik Bai, 27, said while recovering from injuries in a hospital bed in Morbi.

Sidik said he jumped into the water when the bridge began to crack and saw his friend being crushed by its metal walkway. He survived by clinging to the bridge’s cables, but his friend didn’t make it.

“Everyone was crying for help, but one by one they all began disappearing in the water,” Sidik said.

Local news channels ran pictures of the missing shared by concerned relatives and family members raced to overcrowded hospitals searching for their loved ones.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visiting his home state of Gujarat, said he was “deeply saddened by the tragedy.” His office announced compensation for families of the dead and called for speedy rescue efforts.

“Rarely in my life, would I have experienced such pain,” Modi said during a public event in the state on Monday.

Modi was the top elected official of Gujarat for 12 years before becoming India’s prime minister in 2014. A Gujarat state government election is expected in coming months and opposition parties have demanded an investigation into the collapse.

The bridge collapse is Asia’s third major disaster involving large crowds in a month.

On Saturday, a Halloween crowd surge killed more than 150 mostly young people who attended festivities in Itaewon, a neighbourhood in Seoul, South Korea. On October 1, police in Indonesia fired tear gas at a soccer match, causing a crush that killed 132 people as spectators tried to flee.

India’s infrastructure has long been marred by safety concerns, and Mordi has suffered other major disasters. In 1979, an upstream dam on the Machchu river burst, sending walls of water into the city and killing hundreds of people in one of India’s biggest dam failures.

In 2001, thousands of people died in an earthquake in Gujarat. Morbi town, 85 miles (150 km) from the quake’s epicenter in Bhuj, suffered widespread damage. According to a report in the Times of India newspaper, the bridge that collapsed Sunday also was severely damaged.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has announced that effective immediately, parents of children 12 years and younger can access free medical care at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).

It said the arrangement is in response to the increase in viral illnesses and resulting overcrowding at the Bustamante Hospital for Children.

It also pointed out that the increase in viral illnesses is usually seen this time of year.

“Children and the elderly are among the most vulnerable groups, especially at this time, as the flu and gastroenteritis season intensifies,” it said in a release.

The health ministry reminded Jamaicans to only take paracetamol and to visit the nearest health centre if symptoms do not improve.

Tropical storm conditions pose possible threat to Ja within 48 hours Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

The tropical storm watch issued for Jamaica Sunday remains in effect as potential tropical cyclone number 15 moves westward over the central Caribbean Sea and offshore the island’s south coast.

“This means that tropical storm conditions pose a possible threat to Jamaica within 48 hours,” the Meteorologica Service said in its bulletin issued at 5am Monday, October 31.

According to the Met Service, at 4am, the disturbance was centred near latitude 15.8 degrees north, longitude 76.1 degrees west, or about 230 kilometres (125 miles) south of Morant Point, Jamaica.

The system is moving towards the west near 19 km/h (12 mph) and a westward to west-northwestward motion is expected over the next few days, it said.

“On the forecast track, the centre will pass south of Jamaica today (Monday) and south of the Cayman Islands tomorrow (Tuesday),” the Met Service added.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 65 km/h (40 mph), with higher gusts, and the system is expected to become a tropical storm later Monday. Strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days and the system could be near hurricane intensity by Wednesday. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 185 kilometres (115 miles) from the centre.

Fishers on the cays and banks are reminded to exercise extreme caution at this time due to the dangerous sea conditions. Winds are expected to reach tropical storm force Monday while the disturbance moves across offshore waters south of the mainland, the Met Service said.

The system has the potential to produce 50-100 millimetres (2-4 inches) of rainfall and strong, gusty winds reaching near tropical storm force, starting over eastern and southern parishes later Monday morning.

Residents should be on the alert for possible flash flooding in flood-prone areas, it advised. The Meteorological Service said it will continue to monitor the progress of the tropical disturbance.

Lovell says Antigua in grave danger if PM Browne does not take his medication

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Letter to the editor:

Dear Hon Gaston Browne – Chief Servant,

Harold Lovell, Political Leader of the United Progressive Party, on 27th October 2022, purported on his Thursday facebook live show Captain’s Corner that Antigua and Barbuda is in grave danger, if you as the Prime Minister, do not take a medication called Risperdal.

He also purported that if this medication is not taken, this matter then becomes a national security issue for Antigua and Barbuda.

Drugs.com stated the following concerning Risperdal:

Risperdal is an antipsychotic medicine that works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain.

Risperdal is used to treat schizophrenia in adults and children who are at least 13 years old.

Risperdal is also used to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.

Risperdal is also used to treat symptoms of irritability in autistic children who are 5 to 16 years old.

You had stated on your Saturday Pointe FM show that you like to rod persons in the UPP and that it does not matter what they say about you. See below a link of the recording of your statement concerning this.

We as the electorate need to make informed decisions on who we would want to represent us as our next Prime Minister, so it does matter to us when claims are made publicly concerning the Leaders of the two dominant political parties here in Antigua.

Questions for the Prime Minister to answer and bring the necessary evidence to the electorate publicly:

Have you ever been diagnosed and treated with Risperdal for any mental health condition?
If the answer is no to question 1 above, evidence like a letter or report from a psychiatrist stating this should be brought to the electorate. Don’t you think that this would be wise to do since the electorate’s perception is very important for the upcoming election? To date you have not come publicly to the electorate and presented a scintilla of evidencelike documents, text messages, recordings, etc to prove that you had not lied against both Sean Bird and Sherfield Bowen concerning them wanting to leave the UPP camp – Your integrity would have been called into question concerning this matter and now would be a good time to show the electorate you are a man of integrity concerning this Risperdal matter.
If the answer is yes to question 1 above, evidence like a letter or report from a psychiatrist stating that you are fit to hold the office of the Prime Minister should be brought to the electorate. Don’t you think that this would be wise to do since the electorate’s perception is very important for the upcoming election?
If you do not come publicly to the electorate and provide the necessary evidence like a psychiatrist letter or report for them to make an informed decision for the upcoming election shouldn’t the electorate then logically call into question your integrity again?

You have publicly stated previously on your Saturday radio show, as knowing that once you lack integrity you cannot govern – See below a link of the recording of your statement concerning this.

Once again, as the Chief Servant you would know that the electorate are looking for in this upcoming election, a Prime Minister who will truly show integrity, good governance, transparency and accountability while in Government.

Once again, the electorate are expecting better from their Chief Servant. As you stated previously on your Saturday Pointe FM radio show, a word to the wise is sufficient – See below a link of the recording of your statement concerning this.
