UNITED NATIONS, New York, USA – 23rd September, 2022…….. Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne continues to build meaningful consensus on several major issues facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS) ahead of the next UN Climate Change Conference (COP 27) to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from November 6 to 18.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Browne convened a meeting of Heads of States and Governments of SIDS from the Caribbean, Pacific, the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea to discuss issues that have commanded their unceasing attention as they continue to deal with the devastating consequences of climate change.

The Leadership Breakfast, held on the margins of the 77th United Nations General Assembly now taking place at the United Nations in New York also focused on advancing discussions at the UN on the creation of a Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) for SIDS.

Joining the leaders for the opening segment was the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Adern, whom Prime Minister Gaston Browne praised as a ‘tireless supporter of SIDS.’ Also in attendance was Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister for Health and the Environment Sir Molwyn Joseph.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in a recorded message, shared with the meeting, the urgency in making the financing for Loss and Damage an agenda matter at COP27. “We need a targeted, ambitious global response – including how to finance loss and damage, beyond our capacity to adapt. Polluters must pay,” the Secretary General declared.

“Grants and concessional financing currently fail to account for your islands’ unique vulnerabilities,” Guterres acknowledged, while throwing his full weight of support behind AOSIS members in their bid to “ensure eligibility and access to finance.”

Prime Minister Browne expressed his appreciation for the support he has received during his government’s tenure as Chair of AOSIS that has so far allowed for a number of triumphs.     “We have a few more months remaining and will advance additional initiatives that will crystalize our achievements,” he further added.

Prime Minister Browne who is also Co-Chairing the UN High Level Panel on the MVI, declared to SIDS leaders that the MVI can potentially be a game changer that can very well shift the fortunes of small island states.

The MVI seeks to take into account the particular vulnerabilities of SIDS in determining their qualifications for concessional financing to help their recovery efforts following a crisis.

Antigua and Barbuda stands to benefit from a successful MVI as the country is currently unable to access concessional financing and appropriate debt relief measures. A successful MVI would mean that the country would be able to access low-rate financing, grants and other financing methods that will advance Antigua and Barbuda’s development gains and sustainability plans.

During the Heads meeting, Prime Minister Browne urged small states to continue to be united  in their determination to ensure that the international community agrees to lasting solutions to the challenges facing SIDS.

On Friday, Prime Minister Browne will present Antigua and Barbuda’s statement to the General Assembly at 15:00 HRS (3 pm).  The statement will be broadcast live via https://media.un.org/en/webtv/ , Office of the Prime Minister Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OPMAntiguaBarbuda   and ABS TV and their various media platforms.

Brothers Dennis and Kevin Mehlig, Yannick Hafner and Christian Severens were winners on Jai

This past the weekend at the Württembergischer Yacht Club (WYC) in Friedrichshafen Germany, fifteen J70 class teams from around the Lake Constance area, Switzerland and Austria competed in the 4th Antigua Barbuda Trophy Challenge sponsored by Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority.

After six races in conditions very different to Antigua & Barbuda, one of three competing Württemberg Yacht Club (WYC) teams battled to victory. Brothers Dennis and Kevin Mehlig, Yannick Hafner and Christian Severens were winners on Jai.  This is the third time a team from WYC emerged victorious, even though this year’s edition of the Antigua and Barbuda Challenge will go down in the books as being held during the most challenging conditions. The wind ranging from 12 – 25 knots, heavy rain showers combined with low temperatures made for tough J70 racing. The prevailing sentiment at the end of the day was “wet, cold and exhausted”.

Leading throughout each of the races, the Jai team definitely appreciated the Grand prize which gives them the opportunity to fly to Antigua and race at Antigua Sailing Week 2023 in bareboat comfort on a Dream Yacht Charter while basking in Antiguan sunshine and navigating in Caribbean tradewinds.

To complete the prize, regatta entry, dockage at Nelson’s Dockyard and private dedicated Wi-fi from Axxess Marine are all included during the 2023 event which is scheduled for April 29 – May 5.

Antigua Sailing Weeks Events and Marketing Manager attended the event and commented, “The previous winners who attended ASW 2022 did a magnificent job of chronicling their  experiences and it appears to have built a genuine excitement about ASW 2023. The buzz is definitely spreading throughout their network of elite athletes that ASW is an opportunity to get away for some serious fun in the sun.”

Alongside the Antigua and Barbuda Challenge, Interboot Boat Show was taking place. Rana Lewis joined KH + P Yacht Charter on their stand along with Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority representative Sean Matthew. Over the long weekend there were multiple presentations made about Antigua and Barbuda by Sean Matthew and KH+P YachtCharter principal Hartmut Holtman giving visitors to the show an opportunity to learn more about the destination and Antigua Sailing Week.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister,  the Hon. Gaston Browne and newly elected President of the Republic of Kenya, HE Dr. William Suto have pledged to continue strengthening and deepening bilateral relations.

Both leaders held discussion on the margins of the General Debate of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) here in New York.

Antigua and Barbuda and the Republic of Kenya formally established diplomatic relations this year at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Rwanda in June.

Prime Minister Browne extended heartiest congratulations to President Suto, who was recently sworn in as the fifth President of the Republic of Kenya earlier this month and expressed his government’s vision to work with Kenya to advance the interest of sustainable development, trade, peace and prosperity for both peoples.

Antigua and Barbuda and the Republic of Kenya currently enjoy close working relations at the multilateral level, with  both countries currently co-chairing the Sustainable Blue Economy Action Group within the Commonwealth.

Both Heads of Government also participated in the inaugural Africa-CARICOM Summit on 7th September 2021 under the theme, “Unity across continents and oceans: opportunities for deepening integration.

In June 2022, CARICOM established an Embassy in Nairobi which was led by the Government of Barbados.

On this note, President Suto reiterated his offer to Prime Minister Browne for Antigua and Barbuda to establish an Embassy in Kenya. “The establishment of an Embassy would also solidify trade and economic ties between the two countries,” he said.

Prime Minister Browne said that his government will favourably explore the establishment of an Embassy in Kenya and initiated discussions on the possibility of direct airlift between Africa (Kenya) and Antigua and Barbuda.

Prime Minister Browne was accompanied by the Hon. Daryl Matthew, Minister for Education and Sports, and Mr. Tumasie Blair, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations in New York.

Russian/Ukrainian war among issues discussed between Antiguan and Barbudan and Slovenian leaders

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

The Russian aggression against Ukraine was among issues discussed on Thursday by Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne and President of the Republic of Slovenia, HE Mr. Borut Pahor on the margins of the General Debate of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) being held here in New York.

A few weeks ago, President Pahor communicated great interest in meeting Prime Minister Browne to urgently discuss the state of play of global peace and security, sustainable energy and the food crisis created by the Russian/Ukrainian war.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Browne took the opportunity to raise the issue of blacklisting and the unilateral measures on CARICOM countries.

PM Browne strongly advocated that consultations should be held with CARICOM,  before measures are imposed on small island developing states of the Caribbean Community.

The country’s leader also called on President Pahor for Slovenia to advocate for Small States, especially Antigua and Barbuda,  within the European Union.

He also made a call on Slovenia to advocate within the EU for the use of a Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI).

Many SIDS have persistently had issues in accessing concessional financing for sustainable development and to build resilience, due to the application of criteria based solely on GNI per capita by financial institutions. GNI is simply incapable of accounting for the external environmental and socio-economic vulnerabilities SIDS face relative to the rest of the world.

President Bahor assured PM Browne that Slovenia will advance support for the use MVI and support for the 4th International SIDS Conference, which Antigua and Barbuda will host in 2024.

The Slovenian President also called for Antigua and Barbuda’s support of Slovenia’s candidacy for a seat on the Security Council for the term 2024-2025.
