CABINET NOTES

The Cabinet undertook a review of the impact of the storm, Fiona.

It resulted in the closure of schools and the cancellation of classes last Friday, September 16, 2022, and impacted electricity and water supply on Saturday and Sunday, 17 and 18 September 2022.

The Minister responsible for APUA gave a report indicating that no APUA employee/linesman was injured during the 48 hours passage of the storm, although the technicians were busy reconnecting electricity lines following high winds and downpours of rain.

All APUA electricity customers were reconnected by Monday morning.

APUA water customers were inconvenienced because of the absence of electricity to power the reverse osmosis plants and the turbidity of the seas.

Lots of sand and other debris, stirred-up because of the rough seas, caused the reverse osmosis plants to be turned off to prevent damage to the membranes and other sensitive parts.

APUA not only published a press statement but the Water Manager appeared on several radio stations to explain why water was temporarily suppressed.

The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has issued both a Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch for Bermuda as Hurricane Fiona heads north towards the territory.

At 8am, the eye of Hurricane Fiona was located 1,125 kilometers southwest of Bermuda.

Hurricane Fiona is a dangerous category four hurricane and it is packing winds that are near 130 mph (215 km/h).

On the forecast track, the center of Hurricane Fiona is expected to approach Bermuda late on Thursday.

The Bermuda Weather Service said forecasts show Hurricane Fiona is expected to pass about 115 miles (185 km) northwest of the island on Friday.

“Prepare for strong tropical storm winds and hurricane force gusts from Thursday night – a brief period of sustained hurricane force winds remains a possibility. The worst conditions are now expected near dawn on Friday,” the Bermuda Weather Service said. “Take note of the potential for storm surge affecting low-lying coastal areas prone to flooding, as Fiona’s passage is now expected to be coincident with high tide. Dangerous surf on south shore and large swells will be experienced from today.”

CPL 2022: Barbados Royals continue winning form Loop Barbados

The Barbados Royals secured their eighth win of the 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season with a 36 run win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at Providence Stadium, Guyana.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots won the toss and chose to field first, with the Royals getting off to a subdued start, reaching 55-2 after 10 overs before a superb 102 run partnership between Azam Khan and Harry Tector propelled them to 156/3 after 20 overs.

In their chase, the Patriots got off to a confident start with Andre Fletcher and Evin Lewis building a platform, but faltered as the wickets tumbled in the final five overs to leave them 120 all out after 20 overs, losing by 36 runs.

Barbados Royals, who have already secured a place in next week’s play-offs, got off to a very cautious start in their innings, losing openers Rahkeem Cornwall and captain Kyle Mayers in the first eight overs.

Sheldon Cottrell, returning to the Patriots side, led by example in the early overs with a disciplined performance. Yet Khan and Tector revived the Royals innings with some fantastic shot-making that helped reap 95 runs in the final eight overs to take the Royals to 156/3.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots had got off to a positive start, Fletcher and Lewis navigating their way through the PowerPlay, before Mujeeb ur Rahman took both wickets. The Patriots never found consistency after that, losing seven wickets in the final five overs of the game, as Mujeeb found support from Nyeem Young, who also took three wickets.

The win means Barbados Royals continue their excellent form this season while the Patriots are outside the play-off spots with one game left to play.

Scores in match:Barbados Royals 156/3 (Khan 64, Tector 47*; Dananjaya 1/25, Jansen 1/32) beat St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 120 all out (Lewis 41, Brevis 21; Young 3/5, Mujeeb 3/18) by 36 runs
