Taxi catches fire on Red Hills Road

A taxi operator narrowly escaped injury when the motor vehicle he was operating caught fire on Red Hills Road in St Andrew on Monday, mere metres from a service station on the usually busy thoroughfare.

The taxi operator, who did not wish to be named, told Loop News that he was heading towards Half-Way-Tree when he noticed smoke coming from the bonnet of his vehicle.

He pulled over in the vicinity of Lee’s Food Fair to check and when he lifted the hood of the car, he was greeted by fire.

The driver, who was the only one in the vehicle at the time, managed to retrieve his documents before the motor car was engulfed in flames on Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were quick on the scene and managed to extinguish to blaze. Only the frame of the vehicle was left.

No one was injured in the incident which occurred after 6pm.

President Joe Biden has declared the pandemic over in the US, even as the number of Americans who have died from Covid continues to rise.

Mr Biden said that while “we still have a problem”, the situation is rapidly improving.

Statistics show that over 400 Americans on average are dying from the virus each day.

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said last week that the end of the pandemic is “in sight”.

In an interview with CBS programme 60 Minutes aired on Sunday, Mr Biden said that the US is still doing “a lot of work” to control the virus.

The interview – aired over the weekend – was partly filmed on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show, where the president gestured towards the crowds.

“If you notice, no-one’s wearing masks,” he said. “Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape… I think it’s changing.”

But administration officials told US media on Monday that the comments did not signal a change in policy and there were no plans to lift the ongoing Covid-19 public health emergency.

In August, US officials extended the public health emergency, which has been in place since January 2020, through to 13 October.

To date, more than one million Americans have died with the coronavirus disease.

Data from Johns Hopkins University shows that the seven-day average of deaths currently stands at over 400, with more than 3,000 dead in the past week.

In January 2021, by comparison, more than 23,000 people were reported dead with the virus over a single week-long span. About 65% of the total US population is considered fully vaccinated.

Certain federal vaccine mandates remain in place in the US – including on healthcare workers, military personnel and some non-US citizens entering the country by airplane.

Top Republicans criticised the president’s remarks, with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeting: “Biden now says ‘the pandemic is over’ as he’s kicking tens of thousands of healthy soldiers out of the military with his COVID vaccine mandate.”

Public health officials have expressed cautious optimism in recent weeks that the world is edging towards a pandemic recovery, but continue to urge people to be careful.

On Monday, Dr Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, acknowledged the situation had improved.

But in comments made at a Washington DC think tank, he said the daily death rate remained “unacceptably high”.

“We are not where we need to be if we’re going to be able to ‘live with the virus,’” Dr Fauci said.

He also cautioned that new Covid-19 variants could still emerge, especially in the coming winter months.

The US recently authorised new vaccines that match the version of the Omicron variant currently dominant in the country, with federal health officials asking Americans to keep their jabs up-to-date.

Last week, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the world has “never been in a better position to end the pandemic”.

“We are not there yet,” he said. “But the end is in sight.”

Covid-19 also continues to have a significant impact on the US economy, with the National Bureau of Economic Research reporting last week that Covid-related disease had slashed the US workforce by about 500,000 people.

Mr Biden said he believes that the pandemic has had a “profound” impact on the psyche of Americans.

“It’s been a very difficult time. Very difficult.”

More than 6.5 million people have died since the beginning of the pandemic around the world. The US has had the highest death toll, followed by India and Brazil.

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, September 18, 2022 (SKNIS): The President of the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, has offered congratulations to the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis for their achievement on the 39th Anniversary of Independence Day, which is on September 19.

In a congratulatory message to His Excellency Sir Samuel Weymouth Tapley Seaton, Governor-General of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency President Ramaphosa wrote:

Plusieurs branches en provenance de diff?rents points de la commune, n’ont pas pu mobiliser la grande foule et occuper longuement les rues, comme ce fut le cas la semaine derni?re. Par contre, des individus, la t?te couverte, machette et autres objets tranchants en main, ont sem? la pagaille, un peu partout au centre-ville. Au cours de leurs activit?s, ils ont incendi? les locaux de la succursale de la Unibank ? L?og?ne, emport? meubles, batteries, ordinateurs, TV et 2 armes ? feu. Ils ont circul? ? travers les rues, offrant une image in?dite, des sc?nes inhabituelles ? la Cit? d’Anacaona.

Ce lundi 19 septembre 2022, toutes les stations-service du pays demeurent ferm?es. Celles qui n’ont pas ?t? vandalis?es pendant les manifestations des derniers jours ont prudemment mis fin aux op?rations de vente de gaz propane des deux derniers jours.

En effet, l’accalmie a ?t? de courte dur?e apr?s cinq jours d’?meutes. Si les manifestants sont moins violents ce lundi, il y a encore des barricades sur plusieurs axes ? travers le pays. Impossible de recevoir du carburant et de vendre du propane que certaines familles utilisent pour la cuisson des aliments. La prudence est de mise d’autant que les stocks s’amenuisent pour diverses raisons.

Le terminal de Varreux o? sont stock?s 70 % des produits p?troliers du pays est inaccessible. Il y a de la gazoline, du k?ros?ne et du diesel dans les cuves, mais le propane est en rupture de stock, a appris Le Nouvelliste d’une source proche des installations.

Le journal a cependant consult? une vid?o montrant une tranch?e fouill?e vraisemblablement avec un ?quipement lourd, une pelleteuse, qui emp?che tout acc?s de camion-citerne au terminal.

Jamaica records another monkeypox case Loop Jamaica

An additional case of monkeypox has been recorded in Jamaica, in Kingston and St Andrew.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness made the disclosure in its weekly monkeypox update on Monday, relative to up to Sunday, September 18.

The latest case, which is a male patient who tested positive between September 12 and 18, brings the island’s total to 13 cases.

The number of active cases currently stands at seven, while two additional recoveries have brought the total number of recoveries to five.

Two of the confirmed cases of monkeypox were imported, while 11 were locally transmitted.

Meanwhile, the separate death of one monkeypox patient recorded a week ago remains under investigation by health officials.

A total of 28 tests for the disease have been conducted locally.

As of September 16, monkeypox infections stood at a total 60,841 cases across 104 countries and territories globally, with 23 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Monkeypox is a rare disease resulting from infection by the monkeypox virus. The monkeypox virus is a zoonotic disease and is part of the family of viruses known as variola virus, which causes smallpox.

The monkeypox symptoms are similar to those characteristic of smallpox, but milder.

Monkeypox has been deemed as being rarely fatal.

The signs and symptoms associated with the disease include fever, chills, intense headache, extreme exhaustion, muscle and backaches, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that usually appears one to three days after the onset of the fever.

Chastanet Calls Out Government Over St. Jude Hospital Reconstruction – St. Lucia Times News

Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has accused the government of continuing to peddle a ‘deliberate lie’ regarding the reconstruction of St. Jude Hospital.

In a post on Facebook, the former Prime Minister asserted that saying that the building was 30 percent complete constituted a ‘blatant lie’.

“When we left office in July of 2021, the hospital which we had started to construct was over 70% complete, only 6 months away from full completion,” the Micoud South MP asserted.

He said the external work on the structure had already been completed including the complete installation of the cladding, windows, and doors.

In addition, the United Workers Party (UWP) leader noted that work was ongoing on the sewage, electricals, and partitions inside the building.

“We had already begun placing orders for the medical equipment,” Chastanet disclosed.

And he pointed to what he described as another important fact that the SLP continues to ‘conveniently omit’.

“The main contractor for the St. Jude Hospital was Taiwanese construction firm Overseas Engineering and Construction Company (OECC),” Chastanet stated.

“We relied heavily on the expertise and experience of OECC to ensure that this project would live up to the world-class standards and expectations that we had set for this project,” he explained.

But Chastanet asserted that one year later, all Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre can announce about the St. Jude Project is that they will proceed with the fencing of the old building

” If this project wasn’t so serious I would think that this was a joke,” the former Prime Minister declared.

According to Chastanet, the St. Jude Hospital project is a sensitive matter with which the Government must stop playing politics.

“The problems associated with the structure proposed by the Prime Minister have been well documented: low ceilings, poor ventilation, and lighting, electrical wires mixed with the plumbing system. Another disaster waiting to happen,” the opposition leader declared.
