Iga Swiatek beats Ons Jabeur for 1st US Open title, 3rd Slam Loop Jamaica

Iga Swiatek turned in a stellar display befitting of her talent as she sealed the US Open title with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) defeat of Ons Jabeur.

Swiatek has perhaps been short of her very best in New York but, despite a second-set wobble, found her level on Saturday to win a third major – the youngest player to do so since Maria Sharapova in 2008.

Jabeur, the first woman to reach the final of Wimbledon and the US Open in the same season since Serena Williams in 2019, gave her all, forcing the world number one into a real battle in the middle of a tense second set.

It came down to a tie-break, but having won her last nine successive WTA finals in straight sets, Swiatek found the composure to pull through and cement her place at the summit of the game.

Nerves had Jabeur on the back foot from the off, with the Tunisian – the first African female to reach the singles final at Flushing Meadows in the Open Era – dropping serve to love to trail 2-0, with Swiatek swiftly going three to the good.

Jabeur stopped the rot for 3-1 before a display of power off both forehand and backhand gave the world number five two break points, the second of which she took, yet she could not keep the momentum going on her serve, conceding again and, this time, Swiatek did not let up, taking the set when her opponent sent a simple volley long.

Like in the first set, it was 2-0 when Swiatek broke, this time clipping a backhand down the line after latching onto a weak volley, Jabeur unable to assert any control.

A supreme backhand saw Swiatek take the next game, too, though she squandered a break chance when she appeared to be distracted by a shout from the crowd.

The pendulum swung firmly in Jabeur’s favour when she made it 4-4, only for the 28-year-old to then pass up three break points.

Having dug deep to get through Jabeur’s fightback, Swiatek had championship point at 40-30 up in the 12th game. As the crowd held their breath, the youngster changed racquets.

Perhaps it was forced, perhaps a ploy. Either way, the change backfired, Jabeur rolling off three successive points to force a tie-break.

Jabeur kicked a ball into the crowd in anger after an overhit forehand gifted Swiatek a 4-2 lead, but a trio of points mounted the pressure back to the other side of the court.

Yet it was pressure that Swiatek was able to handle, seeing out two Jabeur serves to turn the tables back in her favour and, on this occasion, she prevailed – Jabeur hitting long to end her brave fight.

Data Slam: Swiatek’s year of dominance

Jabeur and Swiatek entered Saturday’s showpiece with the most wins in 2022 and the latter has now matched former world number one Ash Barty’s best haul of 57 victories in a single season (set in 2019), a tally the 21-year-old will surely overtake.

The first top-seeded female player to reach the final at the US Open since Williams in 2014, Swiatek has matched the 23-time grand slam champion in another metric, too, becoming the first player to win seven titles in a single season since the American great did so eight years ago.

Swiatek is only the ninth player in the Open Era to win her third grand slam title before turning 22, after Sharapova, Justine Henin, both Williams sisters, Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Steffi Graf and Chris Evert.

Ministry preaching safety first once again as school resumes Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Kay McConney is assuring the public that the safe return of students and staff is of the utmost importance.

While speaking on Saturday about the start of the new school year, the education minister asserted that Government sought to “create the right kind of environment for learning and for instruction”.

Minister McConney declared a full return to school on Monday, September 19, with several changes.

Schools will return to pre-pandemic schedules, extra-curricular activities will resume, three-feet social distancing has been discontinued and the mask-wearing mandate remains intact but with exceptions for outdoors, and hand sanitisation is mandatory at the entry of the school plant.

Addressing concerns about a possible spike following the resumption of face-to-face classes, the education minister appeased the public, stressing that the Ministry was in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

“Our first interest is ensuring we create the right kind of environment for learning and for instruction and in the event that we believe that is threatened significantly and that the ability of our students to be able to learn in a safe environment is, in fact, something that is being compromised, we will take the necessary decisions,” she stated.

“In the event, there is a spike, our first option is to ensure that we consult with our partner [the Ministry of Health and Wellness] and to take advice and to take lead from them, and then to ensure that we discuss with some of our other educational partners…and then we make a decision based on the facts at the time,” McConney added.

During the press conference, chief education officer, Dr Ramona Archer-Bradshaw, indicated that staff and students who exhibit COVID-19 symptoms while on school premises will be required to seek medical attention immediately and be tested.

Dr Archer-Bradshaw reminded parents and guardians that the pandemic was “not over”. She strongly advised parents not to send their ill children to school.

“We have to ensure that our children and staff members are safe so if your children present with symptoms at home – symptoms of COVID-19 – please keep them at home. Allow them to get the medical attention that is required. Take them to get tested.”

Fort James Plant up and running, expected to supply over half a million gallons of water daily

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Residents across Antigua and Barbuda can look forward to an extra 500,000 gallons of potable water being added to the everyday supply of 7 million gallons following the commissioning of the new reverse osmosis plant at Fort James Beach.

Observer media did a walk through of the facility on Friday along with Minister of Public Utilities Sir Robin Yearwood and other top officials in the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) Water Department.

Although the civil work at the plant has not yet been fully completed along with the construction of the two main water storage units, operations at the plant are already up and running with villagers in the surrounding communities of Villa, Yorks, Fort Road, McKinnons, Point and other areas expected to be receiving water daily.

For those who may not have been getting water over the past few days, APUA’s Water Business Unit’s Manager, Ian Lewis explained that the plant had been off — due to a maintenance issue — but it is now back up and pumping water.

Lewis further explained that although the two water storage units are not yet finished, technicians have set up a temporary solution, as a smaller tank is being used until the two units are complete.

When those tanks are completed, they are each expected to hold over 200,000 gallons of purified water.

Antigua and Barbuda’s long-standing inadequate supply of running water has been well documented, and many residents will be hoping the new facility will improve the situation.

In fact, Minister Yearwood expressed his delight over the plant, adding that there is still some more work to be done to address the water issue in the country.-OBSERVER

‘Marginal decline’ in CSEC/CAPE pass rate Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Education officials have reported a “marginal decline” in the overall pass rate at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

Deputy Chief Education Officer and Local Registrar, Dr Roderick Rudder, while speaking this afternoon during a press conference at the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training headquarters, explained that the overall performances have been “satisfactory” but it was lower than the previous two years.

Dr Rudder disclosed that the Ministry has recognised a trend of CSEC candidates receiving Grade 3’s.

“We are continuing to see evidence that there is a need for some greater emphasis on addressing particularly the number of candidates who received Grade 3. We are seeing quite a high number of candidates receiving Grade 3 knowing that Grades 1 to 3 are the acceptable grades in Barbados, and therefore, the Ministry of Education will continue to work with our schools to ensure that our students can improve in their performances as it pertains to the quality of the grades that they get,” Dr Rudder stated.

The deputy chief education officer shared that the Ministry was in the process of analysing student performance from 2020. He also noted an improvement in some subjects while others reported marginal declines.

“The preliminary results are showing that this year’s results across the region are marginally lower than last year 2021, and lower than the results in 2020.

Of the three years – 2020, 2021, and 2022 – 2020 seems to be an interesting year given that the performances seem to be higher of the three years. It was in 2020 that the examination assessment was based on two components of the three components that would be the SBA [School Based Assessment] and Paper 1 – There were no Paper 2 done in 2020,” he added.

Dr Rudder also revealed that the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) was working with Ministries of Education and schools across the region to address discrepancies in the exams.

“The Caribbean Examinations Council is continuing the process of engaging with ministries of education and schools to address some minor discrepancies that may have resulted at the time of the release of the results. For example, instances, where candidates might have had some ungraded results or there, may be instances where candidates for some reason or other have been recorded as absent due to illness.”

He advised persons who wished to query their results to submit a request to the Caribbean Examination Council by October 7 for review. This also applies to persons who were graded Absent or Ungraded.

Doc calling on corporate Barbados to get employees CPR trained Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

The hope of one doctor in Barbados is to have at least CPR-trained individual in every household across the island.

Medical Director of the Emergency Cardiac Care Department (ECC) at the Heart & Stroke Foundation Dr Anne-Marie Cruickshank wants more Barbadians certified in first-aid and CPR [Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation].

at least person in each household should know CPR. So we encourage corporate Barbados to come

Dr Cruickshank was on-hand at the Ministry of Health and Wellness’s Wellness Day event at the Botanical Gardens today (September 10) to mark Caribbean Wellness Day.

She told Loop News that “at the moment we do have several corporate companies” in Barbados who have “stepped up” and sent their employees to be CPR trained. However, “we want to encourage many, many, many companies to send their employees.”

Having already trained first responders and several other persons over the years, Dr Cruickshank says that the ECC takes its mandate very seriously and refuses to rest on its laurels or drop the ball in this hope to keep educating and training more and more Bajans constantly and consistently.

“Our mandate is [we believe] at least person in each household should know CPR. So we encourage corporate Barbados to come and do the Heart Saver course, which is a one-day course to learn basic CPR – adult, infant and child, and first-aid.”

And she believes that this is a highly achievable target, but only with the buy-in of businesses and citizens.

KC begin Manning Cup title defence with big win over Calabar Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Kingston College (KC) kick-started the title defense of their ISSA Digicel Manning Cup crown by dismissing Calabar High 5-1 on the opening day of the 2022 schoolboy football competition at Sabina Park on Saturday.

The game was the second of a triple-header at the venue. In the opening game reigning daCosta Cup champions, Garvey Maceo had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Kemps Hill in their Zone N fixture.

The much-talked about Dujuan Richards known as “Whisper” scored twice in the 27th and 59th minutes while substitute Nashordo Gibbs also notched a double in the 77th and 90th minutes. Ashanie Kennedy also got on the scoresheet in the 60th minute.

Omar Walker scored a consolation goal for Calabar in the Group A fixture with a powerful drive through a wall of players in the 84th minute.

It was a very good win by the champions as they showed that despite losing a reported 19 players from last season, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

It was such a dominant display that the score line should have been much wider had KC and Jaheem Johnson been more clinical.

Richards got things rolling by cutting inside a defender and fired home much to the delight of his Phoenix Academy coach Craig Butler.

He then doubled KC’s advantage with a beautiful volley from a high cross and before the celebrations subsided Ashanie Kennedy rammed home from an acute angle making it 3-0 on the hour mark.

Substitute Gibbs tapped home in the fourth goal after the ball ping-pong around in the box for his first goal.

Omar Walker then brought some level of respectability to the score line for Calabar by firing home in the 84th minute to make the score 4-1/

That goal lifted the Red Hills Road-based school and its fans as they went on the attack with more vigour and energy. But that energy was sapped quickly as KC responded with their fifth goal as Gibbs got his second goal on the stroke of full time, tapping home after goalkeeper Xavier Codling failed to gather.
