New Zealand have lost their top spot on the ICC One Day International team rankings after a second straight defeat in the three-match One Day International series against Australia.

As a result, England, who had lost the spot to New Zealand in May last year, have regained their place atop the rankings chart. They currently have a rating of 119 with New Zealand on 117 slipping to second.

New Zealand can move to 119 ratings if they win the third and final One Day International in Cairns, Australia on Sunday but will still be second.

There was no other movement in the rankings. India, Pakistan and Australia occupy third, fourth and fifth place respectively on the charts.

The West Indies are now 9th in the One Day International rankings with a rating of 71.

Minister of Education Underscores the Importance of Literacy in Eradicating Poverty and Ensuring Human Progress

Black Immigrant Daily News

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 8, 2022 (SKNIS): The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) commemorates International Literacy Day on September 8th annually. To commemorate this important Day and to underscore the importance of literacy to human development, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley on September 7, 2022, announced that the Ministry of Education will be observing the Day with a number of activities.

“The Ministry of Education is pleased to accept the invitation of UNESCO to partner in observing International Literacy Day on Thursday, 8th September 2022. The theme ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces’ has been appropriately chosen for this year’s international observance. The activities of International Literacy Day provide opportunities to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces, to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable and inclusive education for all. As we celebrate literacy, we ponder the chances for change, the true transformation of the learning spaces that will allow us to address any remaining literacy challenges. True literacy is not just about formal education in the physical ‘brick and mortar’ spaces. True literacy is about providing a unique and powerful tool to eradicate poverty and ensure stronger social and human progress,” said Minister Dr. Hanley.

He further noted the relevance of this year’s theme for International Literacy Day 2022, ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces’, and how it encompasses the modern view of enhanced education delivery.

“The theme for International Literacy Day 2022, ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces’ is timely and relevant.  It highlights enhancing the literacy environment to accommodate different types of learners so that they can maximize their potential. It is worthy of note, that the term ‘Literacy Learning Spaces’ is not limited to the physical environment, as important as that may be. The term brings into sharp focus engaging learners in varied and appropriate pedagogical contexts. Use of appropriate learning materials and activities, in the proper socio-cultural atmosphere, can create or transform the space to facilitate/enhance the literacy experience,” he added.

According to UNESCO, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind people of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda toward a more literate and sustainable society. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with at least 771 million young people and adults lacking basic literacy skills today.

Minister for Health and Wellness, Sabrina Turner, announced Thursday night at the Seafarer’s Hall that she has now secured a partnership with Health City Cayman Islands to bring free health care services to the electoral district of Prospect.

The announcement was made by Minister Turner as a part of her periodic community update, a pre-election promise that she is meeting.

Expounding on the new development, Minister Turner said:

As your Minister of Health and Wellness, I saw the need of bringing health care services to our constituencies.

I am all about preventative care.

And definitely, you can no longer sit by where people feel any less because they either don’t have funds to go to a doctor or they do not have insurance.

So, I have partnered with a health care facility, who is willing to bring a doctor into the constituency once a month.

That will be free of charge to you, the people.

Upon hearing about the new offering, some of the attendees clapped, cheering on Minister Turner for the move.

Ben Meade, Marketing & Communications Manager at Health City Cayman Islands, was also on hand to give more information about the programme for the electoral district of Prospect.

Mr Meade shared that the offering is “about bringing health care to the community and ensuring everyone (who requires care) can get the care they need.”

For us , we are focusing on cancer screenings for the community.

We are looking at a broad number of cancers that impact the community.

We will have a comprehensive cancer screening [and] we are going to do this over several months.

We don’t want to wait until you have a short timeframe.

We want to help diagnose the members of our community with this screenings so that you can get the care that you need when you need it.

These screenings come at no cost.

Mr Meade explained further.

Members of the electoral district of Prospect may now look forward to these free health care services, which may be critical for those who are either not insured or under-insured.

Authorities to soon probe APNU/AFC’s claims that dead, overseas people voted at 2020 polls

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

…as GECOM releases documents

Claims made by the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) that dead people and persons who were overseas on Election Day voted at the 2020 polls, will soon be investigated following the release of fundamental documents by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

Subsequent to a vote taken by the seven-member Commission on Tuesday, the Elections Body has since released to the Office of the Attorney General, documents that were submitted by the then APNU/AFC in their bid to discredit the Official List of Electors (OLE) used in the 2020 General and Regional Elections.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall

Speaking during his weekly programme – Issues in the News – Attorney General Anil Nandlall, SC had posited that “once I receive them [the documents], I will pass them on to the relevant agencies with the request that an investigation be launched to verify the accuracy or lack thereof of the information contained in those documents.”

Last week, Nandlall had written GECOM seeking information on how private citizens’ data was provided to it by the then ruling APNU/AFC.

It is the first step in the direction of an investigation that the AG had previously announced would be held into how immigration and registration data of citizens ended up in the hands of APNU/AFC.

According to his letter addressed to GECOM Chairperson, Retired Justice Claudette Singh, Nandlall noted that APNU/AFC delivered to GECOM, documents claiming to show that dead people and persons who were overseas on Election Day, voted at the elections, as well as documents to claim that there were cases of multiple voting.

“These allegations continue to be peddled in the public domain by leaders and representatives of the aforesaid political entity. At the time and until now, the impression conveyed is that these documents and/or data were generated by and obtained from the official lawful repository of the specific information, for example, the Immigration Department, the Guyana Police Force and the General Registrar’s Office.”

“It is important that the relevant State agency enquires into the source of this information, upon whose directions they were sourced and, perhaps, most importantly, to officially reconfirm their inaccuracy, for public record. In the circumstances, I hereby request a copy of these documents to initiate this process,” Nandlall wrote.

The AG had previously posited that at the end of the investigation, if it is found that laws were breached, culpable persons will face the consequences.

No credibility

The Opposition-aligned Commissioners at GECOM had objected to the release of the documents in question – a move which Nandlall has since expressed is indicative of the APNU/AFC’s lack of credibility.

“And these are the guys who are repeating the very allegations and are relying upon the allegations in their incredible efforts to impugn the 2020 election results…it is they who are speaking about the information in that document and now government has signaled an intention to request that document so that it can be investigated so we can know the truth, and the people are objecting, the very people who are peddling the information in that document are now objecting to the document being released so that we can investigate,” Nandlall pointed out.

“These people have no credibility at all, nothing that they do make any sense to anybody,” he further contended. “That is what we have to deal with.”

Objections

According to People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) nominated Commissioner Manoj Narayan, the Opposition’s objections to the release of the documents were premised on reasons that include their claims that the information in the documents are contained in the election petition. According to Narayan, the Government side argued that this was not true.

Narayan said that the Opposition Commissioners also advanced the argument that GECOM is a constitutional agency and does not have to release the documents. However, Narayan noted that the Commission, as custodians of the requested documents, had no issue with cooperating with a state agency.

“The Commissioners who were appointed by the now Opposition, they were all against it. They voted against it. They did not want any of those documents to be released to the Attorney General, even though on the other side (we) argued that in the interest of fairness and transparency, we need to release those documents as requested,” Narayan had explained to this publication.

Brazilian Ambassador to Guyana, Maria Clara Duclos Carisio has positioned that her country sees Guyana as an important player in the achievement of common goals for the region.

This was highlighted during a reception hosted on the occasion of Brazil’s Bicentennial Independence Anniversary. In attendance were President Dr Irfaan Ali and other important officials.

The diplomat voiced, “Brazil is always open for dialogue and cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean. Especially with Guyana, Brazil is convinced that working together is the best and fastest way to achieve our common goals. Brazil and Guyana have many areas of cooperation where objectives and solutions can be shared for the mutual benefit of their people. Let me mention the important role Guyana plays in leading all the Caribbean countries to participate in the initiatives of cooperation on agriculture and food security. “

According to Ambassador Carisio, Brazil is confident that the products being developed by the two governments will result in immense benefits for Guyana and the state of the North of Brazil. These include areas of agriculture, infrastructure, energy, defence and security.

“The bilateral trade is increasing and lots of opportunities are opened for our business communities on both sides,” she added.

Meanwhile, President Dr Irfaan Ali said that the relationship between Guyana and Brazil will continue to grow given that the countries share a common future with common opportunities.

Ali expressed, “We are proud to be your neighbour. We see no difference between Brazil and Guyana…We live in peace. We live in full respect of each other. We respect the territorial integrity and borders of each other. More importantly, you support us without a doubt on the issue of our borders.”

President Ali added that the neighbouring countries are connected not only in trade, economics and foreign policy but also through culture. He noted that the “most important glue of friendship is our people, our culture, and more importantly our love for sports”. He assured that Guyana’s cooperation and collaboration will continue in the areas of defence, food security, climate security, and foreign policy.

A few months ago, Guyana and Brazil held detailed discussions on infrastructure and energy, among other areas of bilateral interest during a one-day state visit of President Jair Bolsonaro.

By June, Guyana registered two lifts of one million barrels of crude each from the Liza Phase One and the Liza Phase Two projects operated by ExxonMobil for the month of June, and Brazilian state-owned company Petrobras purchased one of these lifts.

Meanwhile, the countries also signed bilateral treaties that would see collaboration on a number of security and legal areas including the seizure and disposal or exchange of assets during criminal investigations and prosecutions.

Cómo cambiarán el dinero, banderas y sellos británicos tras la muerte de Isabel II

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV
