Jamaica Tallawahs continued their unbeaten start to the men’s edition of the 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a four-wicket victory over Guyana Amazon Warriors at Warner Park in St Kitts on Saturday.

Electing to field after winning the toss, the Tallawahs, led by Mohammad Amir, restricted the Warriors to 142 for six off their allotted 20 overs with captain Shimron Hetmyer leading the run-scoring with 39.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Tallawahs managed to chase down the target, reaching 143 for six, with four balls to spare, thanks to some big-hitting from captain Rovman Powell (44 from 38) and Chris Green (17 from 7) lower down the order.

The Warriors lost both of their openers, Paul Stirling (1) and Chandrapaul Hemraj (2) to Amir in the PowerPlay before Shai Hope (25 from 30) and Hetmyer patiently began to rebuild the innings.

Australian spinner Green bowled four overs and conceded a paltry five runs as the Tallawahs frustrated the Warrior batters with some disciplined bowling.

Romario Shepherd accelerated the Warriors’ innings with some big hitting. He hammered 36 from 17 balls, including six boundaries.

The Tallawahs got off to a brisk start in their chase, but the Warriors utilised the spin trio of Gudakesh Motie, Imran Tahir, and Tabraiz Shamsi to restrict runs and put pressure on the batters.

Tahir claimed the key wicket of Brandon King in the seventh over for 32. However, the Tallawahs would eventually manage to chase their total as Powell and Green combined to score 23 runs from the 18th over before reaching the target in the final over.

Imbert: Extra $200m for health workers

Black Immigrant Daily News

File photo: Newly minted registered nurses (from left) Glenderlin Remey, Afeisha Harroo, Tiffany Dyer, Angelique Nathan and LaToya Joseph as they reported for duty at the North West Regional Health Authority on Dundonald Street Port of Spain.

HEALTH workers such as nurses will be paid $200 million, on top of their usual salaries/wages, in recognition of their help to the country during the two years of the covid19 pandemic.

This good news was given by Finance Minister Colm Imbert on Friday in reply to a reporter’s question at the Spotlight on the Economy conference hosted by his ministry at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port of Spain.

“Yes, we have identified the cost. I was in touch with the Minister of Health (Terrence Deyalsingh) just a few days ago.

“It’s going to cost us $200 million, and we will find the money for that.”

President of the Trinidad and Tobago Registered Nurses Association (TTRNA) Idi Stuart welcomed the news, which he said fulfilled the Prime Minister’s promise to healthcare staff.

He told Newsday, “The association is indeed pleased at the honourable PM fulfilling his commitment given to the association since 2020.

“We are extremely pleased, given the tough economic times we are in, that the PM recognised the work of the healthcare sector as deserving. Things are progressing well.”

However Stuart reminded that may other outstanding payments were owed to healthcare workers, including increments and gratuities.

He also wanted the Government to consider permanent employment for 3,400 nurses now on contract. He said the country’s total nursing population was about 7,000, comprising registered nurses (RNs), nursing assistants, also known as auxiliaries, and patient care assistants (PCAs.)

While he did not know how the $200 million would be distributed, he envisaged allocations for frontline clinical staff (such as nurses and PCAs) at risk from contact with infected patients, rather than administrative staff, many of whom worked from home. Stuart was concerned that some workers hired in the health sector for the main two-year duration of the pandemic had since been sent home, even as several billion-dollar health facilities were now seemingly understaffed, suggesting the Government was implying it did not have enough money to pay these staff.

GCOPD seeking increased fines for employers who discriminate against PWDs

GCOPD’s Programme Coordinator Ganesh Singh

The Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) is seeking to have the laws amended so that employers who discriminate against Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) can face stronger penalties.

This is according to Programme Coordinator of GCOPD, Ganesh Singh.

Singh was at the time making a presentation at a workshop for journalist earlier today at the Pegasus Hotel. He pointed out that currently the law only permits a fine of $50,000 for employers who discriminate against PWD.

“The law needs to be defined so that employers can be held accountable,” Singh insisted.

Today’s workshop sought to provide media workers with updated terminologies being used when reporting on PWDs.

The GCOPD is also seeking to have the building codes enforceable.

Currently, the building code specifies what accessibility features are to be used when constructing structures which will be used by the public. However, the law does not make the code enforceable.

About 15 per cent of the world’s population is living with some form of disability, according to the World health organisation (WHO).

In Guyana, legal issues in relation to PWD fall under the Ministry of Health but it is the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security which is tasked with representing, addressing and dealing with issues in relation to PWD.

The main legislation pertaining to the rights of PWDs in Guyana is the Persons with Disabilities Act, Chapter 36:05, Laws of Guyana which was passed in Parliament in June, 2010.

The GCOPD is hoping that the Act is amended so that it falls under the Social Services Act and not the Health Act.

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Jamaican international Leon Bailey scored a second-half equalizer to salvage a 1-1 for Aston Villa against defending champions Manchester City in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Erling Haaland scored another goal for Manchester City but it wasn’t enough this time.

Haaland took his tally to 10 goals from six games by volleying in a cross from Kevin de Bruyne in the 50th minute but then missed two chances to score a second before Villa struck back.

Reggae Boy Bailey met a low cross from Jacob Ramsey and hammered a first-time shot high into the net in the 74th to rescue a valuable point for Villa, whose manager Steven Gerrard was under heavy pressure after three straight league losses.

For City, it’s a second draw to go with four wins in the opening six games, leaving them tied for second place with Tottenham on points. Leader Arsenal have a chance to go four points clear on Sunday if they can maintain their perfect record when they travel to Manchester United.

Pep Guardiola’s City have made a habit of going two goals down before rallying, but this time it was their turn to relinquish the lead.

Haaland had been quiet in the first half but showed his predatory instincts when he came flying in at the far post to meet a pinpoint cross from De Bruyne, jumping high to side-foot the ball in.

The towering Norway striker forced two good saves from Emiliano Martinez as City pushed for a second goal.

That left the visitors open to counterattacks, though, and Ramsey had already squandered one such opportunity with a heavy touch by the time he set up Bailey for the equalizer.

Midfielder Rodri came closest to a winner for City when his shot from outside the area crept narrowly wide in the 87th.
