La tripulación del patrullero Heriberto Hernández de la Guardia Costera rescató a seis hombres de un barco pesquero que se estaba adentrando el domingo, aproximadamente a 18 millas náuticas al oeste de Cabo Rojo.

“Afortunadamente, pudimos brindar asistencia dentro de los 30 minutos posteriores a que el barco se hiciera a la mar, si hubiera pasado más tiempo, el barco pesquero probablemente se habría hundido. Inmediatamente lanzamos nuestro barco de corte y dos de nuestros miembros se subieron y comenzaron a vaciar el barco con una bomba P6. Estoy extremadamente orgulloso de las acciones rápidas y el profesionalismo de la tripulación, casos como este son muy gratificantes y hacen que servir en la Guardia Costera sea gratificante”, dijo el teniente Robert Renfrow, oficial al mando del cúter Heriberto Hernández en declaraciones escritas.

Los hombres, todos con chalecos salvavidas, habían salido en un viaje de pesca recreativa cuando el barco pesquero Makaira Seeker de 27 pies comenzó a llenarse de agua y las bombas de achique del barco dejaron de funcionar.

Vigilantes de la Guardia Costera en el Sector San Juan recibieron una comunicación VHF-Canal 16 a la 1:28 p.m. el domingo desde la embarcación Makaira Seeker informando sobre el peligro y que los pescadores intentaban vaciar la embarcación a mano. Los sobrevivientes también informaron que el GPS de la embarcación no funcionaba y estimaron que su posición estaba aproximadamente a cinco millas náuticas de la boya número seis. Los vigilantes desviaron de inmediato al cúter Heriberto Hernández para encontrar la embarcación en peligro y transmitieron una transmisión de información marina urgente para alertar al tráfico de embarcaciones cercanas para que estén atentos.

En treinta minutos, el cúter Heriberto Hernández llegó a la escena y usó el bote pequeño del cúter para desplegar a dos tripulantes a bordo del Makaira Seeker junto con dos bombas de drenaje P6. La tripulación del bote pequeño también embarcó a cuatro de los pescadores, mientras que otros dos permanecieron a bordo del barco para continuar con los trabajos de extracción de agua.

Una vez que la embarcación estuvo estable, la tripulación de la lancha cúter escoltó al Makaira Seeker hasta la marina de Puerto Real en Cabo Rojo.

Deux petites lunes, des anneaux nébuleux et des pôles luisants: la Nasa a publié d’impressionnantes nouvelles images de Jupiter grâce au télescope spatial James Webb.

“C’est vraiment remarquable de parvenir à voir des détails sur Jupiter avec ses anneaux, ses petits satellites et même des galaxies, tout ça dans une seule image”, s’est félicitée lundi Imke de Pater, astronome à l’université de Berkeley, dans un article de blog de la Nasa.

Aux pôles de la planète la plus massive de notre système solaire émergent des lumières comme fluorescentes: ce sont les aurores de Jupiter qui, comme pour notre Terre, sont constituées de particules venues du Soleil qui réagissent au champ magnétique de l’astre.

Ces images présentent aussi la surface de cette géante gazeuse avec ses vents, tempêtes et brouillards.

Une vue plus large montre Jupiter avec ses anneaux, très fins, et deux lunes, Amalthée et Adrastée.

Ces images sont tirées des observations d’un outil de James Webb, NiRcam, qui observe l’infrarouge proche, un champ invisible à l’oeil nu.

Les données collectées, qui seront étudiées par les chercheurs pour mieux comprendre le fonctionnement interne de Jupiter, ont été adaptées pour en tirer ces illustrations visibles par l’oeil humain.

Bijou d’ingénierie d’une valeur de 10 milliards de dollars, le télescope James Webb a été lancé dans l’espace il y a près de huit mois et se trouve à 1,5 million de kilomètres de la Terre.

The Health Ministry says it does not anticipate many cases of monkeypox in the country, following the detection of the nation’s first case on Monday.

A 57-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) is currently isolated at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown after he tested positive for the disease.

Persons who were recently in contact with the patient were quarantined for monitoring, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony assured the nation on Monday.

Today, the Health Minister further revealed that local experts do not anticipate a monkeypox outbreak on local shores.

“Monkeypox is relatively rare, we only have one case now in Guyana, the patient is very stable, and in the next 14 days, that patient should be discharged, once everything goes well. So, we don’t expect a lot of cases,” he expressed.

Dr Anthony said health authorities are already on the lookout for persons who may become infected with both monkeypox and the novel coronavirus.

“We would be on the lookout for such combinations and if they do occur, the doctors will come up with the appropriate way of treating it,” he said.

Meanwhile, it was revealed that a committee of specialists has been established, where persons can seek guidance and information should they suspect that they have the disease.

Moreover, Dr Anthony further assured that Guyana has capacity to detect the virus from a diagnostic point of view. Adequate laboratory reagents were also sourced to conduct testing at the National Public Health Reference Laboratory.

“Our staff went to Jamaica, they received that training, came back and they have in turn trained a lot of people in the country, so we have capacity to be able to detect the virus. We also made sure that we bought the relevant laboratory reagents so that if we have to run the test, we have that capability of running the test. At our National Public Health Reference Lab, we have several PCR machines and we have configured one of them to be able to do these tests specifically to monkeypox,” he explained.

This new epidemic has been declared a Public Health Emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO), with detection of monkeypox in 96 territories.

From March to present, over 42,666 cases have surfaced globally. Across the Region, cases have been detected in countries like Cuba, Barbados, Jamaica, Bahamas and Brazil.

Brazil has been plagued with over 3000 infections.

Just this month, the Health Minister had announced that Guyana’s borders and ports of entry were being monitored for any potential cases of monkeypox. The Ministry had been putting contingency plans in place, and also deploying resources to treat any cases that arise.

This is according to Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Camillo Gonsalves.

He says with the vast number of construction work being undertaken here, it is important that the quality of work conditions is improved for workers.
