Guyanese escapes from immigration custody in BVI

Bviplatinum.com: British Virgin Islands Deputy Chief Immigration Officer Nadia Demming-Hodge has advised the public to be on the lookout for Guyanese national Ianna Thomas, who reportedly escaped from the department’s temporary detention facility at Hotel Castle Maria on Monday, August 22.
“According to Mrs. Demming-Hodge, Ms. Thomas remains at large, and a search is underway to recapture the detainee. The public is urged to be on the lookout, and contact the Immigration Department in the event that Ms. Thomas is sighted.”
This has been stated in a press release from Government of the Virgin Islands.
Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of Ms. Thomas is asked to contact the Immigration Department at 468-4705, 468-4717, 468-4715, 468-4754, or the RVIPF hotline at 311.
The BVI continues to see an influx of illegal immigrants. While they do land in the BVI, historically, most of the illegal immigrants are on their way to the United States. However, once they are captured by local authorities, the responsibility is on the BVI to provide services, and eventually arrange for their repatriation to their home country.
A detention centre had been built to house immigration detainees in the compound of Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsum’s Ghut, but the facility is now being used by the prison. Late last year, then Minister for Immigration, Hon. Vincent Wheatley, alluded to the need to build a detention centre for illegal immigrants, pointing to the cost to taxpayers.

The leader of Saint Lucia’s National Green Party (NGP), Andre ‘Pancho’ de Caires, has welcomed the Special Prosecutor Act, declaring it is a step in the right direction.
“A man steals a bag of rice in the supermarket to feed his family – it is worth five dollars and he gets held and put in jail,” de Caires told St Lucia Times.
“Yet politicians seem to be ripping off the country in tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and sometimes millions of dollars, and nothing seems to happen to them,” the NGP leader observed.
He hoped that everyone guilty of corruption would ‘face the music.’

“I would like to see people punished for their corruption. But until politicians get punished it will continue,” de Caires asserted.
Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre recently secured the support of the country’s legislators in the House of Assembly for the Special Prosecutor Act.
This legislation empowers an attorney-at-law appointed by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission to serve as Special Prosecutor.
It also authorises the office holder to receive complaints and investigate credible reports of corrupt conduct by incumbent public officials and public officials who have demitted office.

Rain causes no major incidents in South, Central Trinidad

Chaguanas Mayor Faaiq Mohammed –
CHAGUANAS Mayor Faaiq Mohammed said heavy rain on Monday caused some flash flooding in the borough.
The flooding took place along Chaguanas Main Road but ran off quickly.
Mohammed hoped that Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan would see what could be done to address flooding in downtown Chaguanas similar to when flooding happens in other parts of TT.
There were no other incidents related to the rain in South/ Central Trinidad on Monday. This was reflected in a statement issued by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM).
Penal/Debe Regional Corporation chairman Dr Allen Sammy said there were no reports of flooding in the area on Monday.

Laventille man killed in drive-by shooting

A 27-year-old Laventille man is dead after being shot at Harpe Place, Observatory Street, Port of Spain, on Monday night.
Police said at about 8.30 pm, Avery Weekes, of Basilon Street, East Dry River, had just stepped out of a car and was walking along Observatory Street when a man jumped out of a white car, chased him and shot him. Weekes fell and the gunman stood over him and shot him again.
The killer then got back into the car and escaped along Bath Street, East Dry River.
The killing was captured on CCTV cameras and began circulating on social media about two hours after the murder.
Another man who uses a wheelchair was hit in the back by a bullet during the attack. Both men were taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where Weekes was declared dead on arival. The other man was listed as stable.
An elderly man who police said was intoxicated was grazed by a bullet and refused medical attention.
Police categorised Weekes’ killing as gang-related, as he was a known affiliate of the Rasta City Gang.
Weekes was the third man killed on Monday. The other two were Damien Danclair, who was killed in Maloney Gardens at about 1.20 am, and Keith Balramsingh, who was killed in Caroni about an hour later.
Police suggested no motive for their murders.
