The PPP/C Government on Monday honoured its commitment to improve the livelihood of residents of Albouystown, who will soon benefit from $1.4 billion worth of community enhancement works.

The works will be conducted through the Ministry of Public Works Urban Enhancement Projects for South Georgetown.

Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill during the launch said government is committed to bringing improvement to the lives and livelihood of every Guyanese. However, he noted that this particular project has more benefits than what meets the eye.

Minister Edghill stated that “we are not here to displace anybody even though people will have to move. We are here to bring value to your neighbourhood… Albouystown, East Middle Road must move from being Shanty Town into being part of the development of the Georgetown City as this country modernises. We are making this community attractive so your property value must go up”.

The Public Works Minister said the works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Enhancement works will be undertaken along Independence Boulevard which is 1.8 kilometres in length from Saffon Street to Cemetery Road. The work entails construction of a three-lane carriageway with concrete drains and culverts. It will also have a three metres wide promenade with elevated lights, garden and seats.

The works were divided into three lots between three contractors. They are RIM Construction, IB Contracting and Machinery Rental and C&L Construction Inc.

Major upgrade will also be done to 1.2 kilometres of Vlissengen Road (Cemetery Road) from Princess Street to Mandela Avenue. Avinash Contracting and Scrap Metal Inc will be executing the works.

The scope of work for this contract includes an upgrade of the existing carriageway to allow four lanes, construction of drains along the eastern and western carriageways, construction of a central avenue and a fence to both sides of the cemetery.

Residents of the community were also assured that in addition to their community being beautified, they will also gain employment when work commences.

“All the contractors they have already been told while we are developing and enhancing the environment people from the area must get work. So, while we are bringing development, we are also creating jobs”, the Minister said.

Residents of the community will also have access to the bill of quantities so that they can be aware of the scope of works to be undertaken by each contractor.

From as far back as the island’s leading telecommunications provider, FLOW, has been operational, the organisation’s brand has been synonymous with youth development through its many successful outreach, scholarship and internship programmes.

Post-pandemic, where many corporate social responsibility initiatives had been halted, the internship programme is once again in full swing, hosting students from the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College studying in various fields.

FLOW’s Human Resource Manager, Shayla McIntyre, says the internship programme is just one small but very impactful element of the organisation’s corporate social responsibility agenda.

She believes it provides students the opportunity to learn from industry experts and develop an appreciation for a fast-paced, highly competitive, and demanding working environment.

“Though the programme’s participants are well positioned to benefit through personal development, this also grants the company an opportunity to identify talented and skilled individuals who FLOW may be able to recruit when career vacancies exist,” she commented and continued, “the number of current employees, both line staff and senior management, who are former participants of the programme, is indicative of its success.”

The students had the liberty of determining which departments across the organisation they would be assigned to for the duration of the internship, which better guarantees sustained interest and consistent performance.

Nathanial Mitchell, a Technology Student at the tertiary institution says, “I am extremely excited to continue this learning journey and believe it will better position me forgainful employment in the industry once I have completed schooling. I am really thankful for the opportunity.”

At an orientation ceremony held on June 1, 2022, the interns were welcomed by department leads and mentors for the duration of the programme.

They heard stories of the career journey of many of the leaders including their experience starting in the business as an intern.

They were also given an overview of the company’s operations as well as its policies and standards and had an opportunity to converse with current employees, asking questions and gaining insight on areas of interest.

The students will be evaluated at the end of the programme and will also be required to provide feedback on their experience in the form of a written report.

FLOW looks forward to providing more opportunities of this nature in the future.

Shenseea and Skillibeng Flexes Cash And Lamborghini In “Rain” Video

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

Shenseea and Skillibeng dropped the visuals for their new collaboration, “Rain,” on Monday as Shenseea showed off her rapping skills in the new track.

The two artists have grown closer professionally over the last few months as both pursue parallel careers in the hip-hop space. Just months before, both Shenseea and Skillibeng were budding artists in Jamaica, but their dedication to the craft has paid off as they float along together in “Rain.”

The track was released on July 29, and Shenseea announced on Monday, August 22, 2022, that the visual was ready. In a snippet shared on her Instagram account, Shenseea embodies fire in a teaser for the song.

“When mi silent, mi do damages, Can’t get long, cause dem affi watch the pitch, man wi kill fi me cau dem know mi nah go snitch,” Shenseea raps in the teaser showing her in an orange bodysuit with fire make eye make-up with Skillibeng in one scene with her.

Shenseea had previously indicated that she would be deejaying/ rapping on the track in a different teaser shared weeks ago. While the beat for the track is hip hop driven, the track and lyrics keep true to authentic to dancehall as Shenseea spits over the riddim.

In another teaser, Shenseea gets bold with her lyrics as she stakes her claim. “I’m a rich b**ch, not a simple b**ch, Swipe mi own card and check mi wish list, See, I might scam a n***a, I’m ambitious, but I don’t sell pu**y God’s my witness, Nah beef wid a b**ch about a d**k. Too much mon ah road mi can pick, This gyal love n***as who trick But yute?” she asked in another verse she teased in late July.

The snippet was well-received, with her manager Dizzycleanface showing support as well as many fans, including Winnie Harlow and her Shen Yeng, including Skillibeng’s E-Syde fans. “Fully eastsyde di thing deh,” one Skillibeng fa wrote. The comment section was inundated with fire emojis and heart eyes.

This is Shenseea and Skillibeng’s first track together after what appeared to be beef between the two artists. Fans had previously speculated that the two Jamaicans were not on good terms after Skillibeng had name-dropped Shenseea in one of his tracks where she referenced her “Lick” collaboration in his song “Love Handles.”

“Mi wi dead fi yuh, yuh nuh have ten man a touch yuh one time like Shenseea,” Skillibeng had rapped, but all seemed well with the two since then.

Skillibeng had also withdrawn the song and amended the lyrics shortly after its release. The deejay excluded Shenseea’s name from the track after fans began speculating that there was bad blood between the two.

This Caribbean Immigrant Makes History As A UFC Champion

Black Immigrant Daily News

By NAN Sports Editor

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Aug. 22, 2022: Caribbean immigrant Leon “Rocky” Edwards has made history.

Jamaican botn Edwards shocked the MMA world Saturday night when he beat Kamaru Usman of Nigeria in the UFC 278 main event to win the welterweight belt in Salt Lake City, Utah and become a UFC champ.

With a head kick in the final round of a fight he was losing handily, Edwards knocked out Usman to win at the Vivint Arena. The finish came at 4 minutes, 4 seconds of the fifth round, making it the fourth-latest finish in a UFC title fight.

Edwards snapped Usman’s 15-fight UFC winning streak, which was one off Anderson Silva’s UFC record. It was one of the most stunning knockouts in the history of the sport. Usman was considered the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.

Edwards is also the second England-based athlete to do so. An emotional Edwards, speaking with commentator Joe Rogan immediately after the fight, declared: “I was born in Jamaica with nothing. I lived in a wooden shed with a zinc roof. Look at me now!”

Edwards, who celebrates his 31st birthday on August 25th, was born in Kingston and lived with his parents and his brother in a one-room house. Growing up, he was surrounded by crime, and his father was involved in what the fighter has described as “questionable activities.”

He moved to the Aston area of Birmingham, England at age nine, and his father was shot and killed in a nightclub in London when Edwards was thirteen.

After the tragedy, he would become involved in criminal activity such as drug dealing, street fighting, and knife possession along with his social circle, but was able to get out of the lifestyle at age 17 when his mother got him to join a mixed martial arts (MMA) club.

More than a decade later, on Saturday night (August 20), Edwards started well in the long-awaited title fight at UFC 278 in Salt Lake City, but Usman dominated the middle three rounds to put himself on course for a decision victory.

Out of nowhere, Edwards feinted a jab before slamming a kick into the side of Usman’s head, flooring one of the most dominant champions the UFC has ever had and surprising everyone in the Vivint Arena.

In winning Edwards has also become only the second British fighter to win a UFC title.

The Best Cricket Players To Represent The West Indies

Black Immigrant Daily News

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. Aug. 23, 2022: The region of the West Indies has been home to some of the best cricket players to grace the sport. The West Indies is special in that it is a federation made up of a fairly large number of nations, which come together to compete with cricket’s main contenders in each of the sport’s different formats.

While the West Indies may not have the best-looking record compared to other teams in world cricket, there is no doubt that the region has bred some of the most iconic players to play the game. We asked Alex Goldstein, a betting expert who manages the well-respected bookmaker comparison website mybettingsites.com/ca, who he felt the best cricketers from the West Indies were:

Best Cricket Players to Play for the West Indies

Chris GayleBrian LaraViv Richards

1. Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle is one of the most influential cricket players to have picked up a bat and ball. The Jamaican, who has played international cricket for the West Indies since 1999 is known for his destructive batting, and his powerful aura that has made the West Indies, at times, a fearful prospect of facing.

Gayle has set plenty of records in the game. He is the most capped West Indies player of all time, and he is the only player to score a triplet of centuries, a triple hundred in Tests, a double hundred in ODI, and a hundred in T20Is.

Having represented the Kolkatta Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Punjab Kings, and numerous other cricketing franchises. Technically, Gayle still offers his services to the Windies but is mostly utilized for limited overs games.

2. Brian Lara

Hailing from Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago, The Honourable Brian Lara is the next man to make the list of best Windies cricket players. Brian Lara has managed to top test cricket batting rankings on several occasions and holds cricketing records, including the highest individual score in first-class cricket with 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston in 1994.

Brian Lara was so influential in the game of cricket, that six video games were released, with his name as part of the title of the game. Brain Lara Cricket, through to Brian Lara Pressure Play was a series of cricket video games produced by Codemasters. When your name is added to the name of a sport on a video game, you know you’re an influential figure within a game.

Having been dubbed the Michael Jordan of cricket by then-US president Barrack Obama, the impact Brian Lara has had on the game of cricket is tangible, and it is why he is largely considered one of the best cricketers to don the maroon of the West Indies.

3. Viv Richards

The next entry on the list is The Honourable Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards, better known as King Viv. Smokin Joe, another nickname for the Antiguan legend, made his test debut in 1974, and in the years between 1976 and 1983 was largely considered the greatest batsman at the time.

Having been knighted for his contributions for the game of cricket, and voted as Wisden’s five cricketers of the century, there are few that inspire as much pride as King Viv for those who support the West Indies on the international level.

Viv’s explosive batting record, and countless honors mean that he is one of the most lauded cricket players of all time, despite not being active for decades.
