Opposition Leader Jamal Pringle

Jamale Pringle, MP for All Saints East and St. Luke, is joining constituents’ complaints about the lack of pipe-borne water in All Saints for 10 days.

The Antigua Labour Party (ALP) had vowed to improve the distribution of water within 14 days of taking office in 2014. However, nine years later, many say the water situation is even worse.

While the United Progressive Party (UPP) had installed a number of storage tanks to address the problem, the Browne Administration has failed to have them commissioned and put into operation all these years.

Pringle, the Opposition Leader, is asking that this be done now and is suggesting that the tank in Buckleys be commissioned right away.

PDV-CAB Benefit Programme is unchanged, Louard says, and is not to be confused with Social Transformation’s food vouchers

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

The Peoples’ Benefit Programme is not being revamped, says Laurie Louard, Operations Manager of the PDV-CAB initiative, in response to claims by a beneficiary that its card is not being accepted.

Reportedly a senior citizen recently telephoned a radio station and complained that an authorized vendor had refused to take her card on the grounds that programme is being revamped.

She claims her card was suspended, preventing her from accessing the benefit, until further notice.

While denying the allegations, Louard said he believes there might have been some mix-up on the part of the caller, since there are two government food programmes currently in operation.

Under the Peoples’ Benefit Programme, beneficiaries get a $215 credit every month to purchase food from selected vendors. The other programme, however, is a food-voucher subsidy that falls under the Social Protection Board in the Ministry of Social Transformation.

However, Louard assures that there has been no change to the PDV-CAB initiative.

Louard says the Peoples’ Benefit Programme – which was introduced by the United Progressive Party Administration in 2008 – is still going strong.

However, he notes that his department has not received a shipment (of fuel) from Venezuela for the past five years due to an embargo placed on that country by the United States of America.

Therefore, no money is coming in to fund the programme through this avenue in the manner that was intended.

Scrap-iron workers slam Government, UNC, dealers

Scrap iron worker, Daniel Joseph, in an interview on Thursday speaks with media while distancing himself and fellow workers from the Trinidad & Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association, blasts the government on the decision to implement a 6-month ban on export to the industry. SCRAP-iron workers in Claxton Bay have accused the Government, Opposition and the Scrap Iron Dealers Association of doing nothing to help them with scrap-iron exports being banned for six months,

They did so after meeting with Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) political leader David Abdulah at Temple Street, Claxton Bay on Thursday.

At different places along the road were remnants of tree branches, tyres and scrap iron which were used to block it, in protest against the industry’s closure.

Daniel Joseph said, “I have been working scrap iron for the last eight years of my life.” Joseph has four children and he does not know how he can afford to buy schoolbooks for them now.

“People have rent to pay. The landlord doesn’t want to know how (they will get their rent) in the next six months. They want us out their place.”

Looking at the other people around him, Joseph said the industry employs many young people.

“The devil finds work for idle hands.

“We are no criminals. We are coming out here, trying to get back an honest dollar. To try and get back out there and work hard.

“This is our way of life. This is what we know about. Hungry people is angry people.”

He slammed Pointe-a-Pierre MP David Lee for not helping them.

“He hasn’t reached here yet – driving a $2.5 million vehicle, and we’re hungry out here and he can’t reach here yet.”

Lee was questioned by police last week in relation to the purchase of a Mercedes Benz valued at $2.3 million which attracted a $1.4 million tax exemption.

It was alleged that Lee is not using the car and a party financier may have benefited. Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar defended Lee on this matter.

Keevon Perry said the association was not helping them.

“They have not reached here. So who is helping out us, the people?”

Perry said he wa the breadwinner in his house.

“Without this job, there is nothing for us. No one is hiring us.”

Perry claimed the association was only seeing about itself and not its workers.

Devon Hayde said many scrap-iron workers knew nothing about a meeting held between the association, Lee and UNC MPs Rudranath Indarsingh and Dinesh Rambally at Lee’s constituency office on Wednesday.

“They went in one room and they had a discussion. We were out here in the rain and we got nothing from it.”

In a statement on Thursday, Lee confirmed meeting with the association and called for Government to reopen the industry.

Hayde said, “Right now, we are appealing that we need our work back because we don’t have time any more.”

Asked what would happen if the ban is not lifted, Hayde replied, “We will have to carry it (protest) further and more devious.”

He added it may need the Prime Minister’s intervention to resolve the matter.

“If we can’t eat, none of all you can eat.”

Hayde said Claxton Bay is the hub of the scrap-iron industry.

“In the morning, you can see 107 (scrap-iron) vehicles leave Claxton Bay to work the whole of TT.”

He declared it is not right to now to make 100-plus workers and their families suffer by closing the industry.

“You have to give us something right now, because it (protests) would not stop.”

Earlier in the day, police and fire officers cleared debris along the Southern Main Road in Claxton Bay after another group of residents protested the export ban. They vowed to continue their protests unless Dr Rowley announced the industry’s reopening.

Senior Cop Addresses Allegations of Corruption In The RSLPF – St. Lucia Times News

Assistant Commissioner of Police George Nicholas on Wednesday night addressed allegations of corruption in the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), including claims that some officers are in league with members of criminal gangs.

“We mustn’t pay too much attention to the rumours that are going around out there,” he stated during an appearance Wednesday night on the Hot 7 Television programme ‘The Hot Seat’ where the issue surfaced.

“You would hear of allegations of corruption in every sphere of Saint Lucian society whether it be the police, the Customs, the politicians themselves,” Nicholas stated.

“What I can tell you is we have a disciplinary system within our organisation that deals with officers who breach that disciplinary code and if it extends to a criminal act on their part, it would warrant them being arrested and hauled before the court like any other citizen,” he explained.

“As we speak we have officers sitting at Bordelais serving time,” the senior police officer revealed.

He said those officers were arrested for committing criminal acts.

“Our discipline system, I have every confidence in it – it works and we have tried a number of police officers who have been found wanting, who have breached that disciplinary code,” Nicholas observed.

He said some of those officers have been fined while others have been suspended or fired depending on the offences they committed.

Police Commissioner Milton Desir had recently announced the termination of an officer for misconduct, raising questions as to why the officer had not been imprisoned.

And Nicholas explained.

“We have our police regulations, we have the police act and these two pieces of legislation govern the conduct of police officers within the organisation,” he said.

“We have other legislation that the general citizenry are subjected to – the Criminal Code, the Drug Act, the Firearms Act, and all of these. We too are subject to those,” he told Hot 7 Television.

“The reason the officer was dismissed fell under the Police Act so that is why a hearing was held internally and then a recommendation was made for his dismissal and the Commissioner acceded to it. He was not charged under the Criminal Code or any of these other legislation that would warrant him being hauled before the court of law,” Nicholas declared.

“Our disciplinary legislation does not lend itself to imposing a prison sentence,” the senior officer stated.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: NBC SVG

Vincentians and other Caribbean nationals are likely to benefit from the coming on stream of two Jet Stream 31 aircraft, which are scheduled to begin operations shortly within the Eastern Caribbean.

The Agency for Public Information, API, says, this country’s Minister responsible for Civil Aviation, Carlos James, along with two Aviation Officers, were present at the Argyle International Airport, to witness an inspection flight by the airline operators.

The operation is a partnership between Barbados-based Executive Air and Blue Star.

They will join a number of other smaller operators, to strengthen the aviation service among the Eastern Caribbean Islands.

The flights will operate between Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Barbados.

Minister James said, as regional Governments continue to resolve the challenges facing regional air transport, the operation of the Jet Stream Aircraft will play a critical role, in filling the gap to support the movement of people in the Eastern Caribbean.

First Regional Gender Equality Strategy consultations held in St Lucia Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

The Deputy Programme Manager, Gender and Development, Anne-Marie Williams says the National Consultations on the Draft CARICOM Regional Gender Equality Strategy is the first of its kind in the region.

Williams says the goal of the strategy is to accelerate key priority actions that are in keeping with regional and international agreements that member states have signed on to and ratified.

“We do a lot individually as countries. We work in silence; Belize does its piece, Saint Lucia does its piece and so on. But what do we really achieve as a region?”

She adds that the Strategy has a Monitoring and Evaluation, Accountability and Learning Plan which is underpinned by specific CARICOM Gender Equality indicators.

Williams says these indicators will help to assess the progress made under the different priority pillars in the region.

“The strategy has seven priority pillars which speaks to access to health; inclusive quality education; good governance; gender equality and social inclusion; freedom from violence; sustainable natural resource management; and economic empowerment.”

Last week, Williams says there were virtual consultations in Grenada where they added culture to the list of priority pillars which she believes is important because it allows for an integral part of who we are as a people.

The National Consultations on Draft CARICOM Regional Gender Equality Strategy took place on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, in collaboration with the Department of Gender Affairs Saint Lucia. Forty-two stakeholders, representing 32 governmental and non-governmental entities from Saint Lucia participated in the consultation held at the Bay Gardens Hotel.

Williams notes that there were discussions on issues solely attached to Saint Lucia.

“The participants have an opportunity to really look at what they’d like to see included in the strategy; what are some of the challenges in the region? What are some of the opportunities to do good on those issues?”

Following consultations, Williams says that member states will review the strategy and it will then go to a conference of heads of government for their blessing.

According to the Deputy Programme Manager, 20 CARICOM member states will take part in consultations on the strategy which, she adds, is being funded under the Regional Spotlight Initiative Caribbean Program with the help of UN Women and UNDP.

Census resumes: Minister says police solved Fraud, Impersonation issue Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Minister In the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Ryan Straughn is happy to report that police have given the all-clear for staff of the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) to resume their house-to-house visits to complete the Census enumeration.

The statement did not indicate if arrests have been or subsequent charges have been laid against any accused. However, if citizens feel unsafe, a hotline number has been provided.

Here is the statement from Minister Straughn:

A few weeks ago, there were a number of social media posts that caused the BSS temporarily suspend the enumeration for the population and housing census. I am happy to report that thanks to the work of the Barbados Police Service, this matter has now been resolved.

If householders are unsure that an individual is a member of the staff of the Barbados Statistical Service they can call the office at 535-2600

As a result, Census staff will be re-entering the field to complete Census enumeration from Wednesday, August 17, until September 30.

Householders are assured that staff from the Barbados Statistical Service who approach their homes are for either the Continuous Labour Force Sample Survey, or the Population and Housing Census are legitimate and have taken the Oath of Secrecy, which means that they cannot divulge information collected on any individual person or individual business.

The communities to be visited by Census workers will be publicised via the news media. These communities will also be shared with the Barbados Police Service, along with the names of the Census workers. If householders are unsure that an individual is a member of the staff of the Barbados Statistical Service they can call the office at 535-2600.

Officers will be collecting basic information on the household and will follow-up the interview with a telephone call to speed up data collection.

In addition to these surveys, the Ministry of Housing Lands and Maintenance is also conducting field work in relation to Operation Seek and Secure. Also, the officers of the Barbados Revenue Authority are conducting their tri-annual property valuation exercise, which was delayed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Officers from Operation Seek and Secure, as well as the Property Valuation Exercise, may request your permission to enter your home at your discretion, to take any relevant photographs of your property. For the avoidance of any doubt, I emphasise this is entirely at your discretion.

I am therefore asking householders to fully cooperate with the Census workers, the officers of Operation Seek and Secure, as well as Officers conducting the Property Valuation Exercise from the Barbados Revenue Authority when they visit your home. These officers will be carrying picture identification cards issued by the respective institutions.
