WEST INDIES restricted New Zealand for 190 in 45.3 overs in the first CG United One-Day International match at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Wednesday evening.

Sent in to bat, the Kiwis had a fair start from their openers Finn Allen (25) and Martin Guptill (24) before Allen fell with the score on 41, caught by Nicholas Pooran, running back from extra cover, off Akeal Hosein’s left-arm spin.

Hosein struck again, twice, as he had Guptill snapped up by Kyle Mayers at slip and then Devon Conway (four) sweeping to Shamarh Brooks at deep midwicket, to leave New Zealand on 63/3.

Guyanese off-spinner Kevin Sinclair, on his ODI debut, trapped Tom Latham leg-before for 12.

Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph snagged the next two wickets as he had Daryl Mitchell (20) trapped in front his stumps and skipper Kane Williamson (34) caught behind by Shai Hope.

At 122/6 with 30 overs gone, WI buckled down and removed the remaining four batsmen for 68 runs.

Among them, ODI debutant and TT leg-spinner Yannic Cariah got his first wicket, Michael Bracewell, who scored 31 from 33 balls.

Joseph (3/36) and Jason Holder (2/39) wrapped up the New Zealand innings as Mitchell Santner (25), Tim Southee (12) and Trent Boult (one) all perished.

Hosein however, was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged 3/28.

WI chase 191 for victory. A series win here guarantees WI an automatic spot in next year’s Cricket World Cup in India. The other two matches in the series will take place at Kensington Oval on Friday and Sunday.

‘It Hurt The Prime Minister’ – Burglary At Pierre’s Constituency Office – St. Lucia Times News

Police are investigating a burglary at the constituency office of Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre.

Cindy Charlemagne, the Youth Attaché to the Prime Minister, told St Lucia Times that on Tuesday, around 7:45 am, she received a call from the Castries East MP informing her of the incident at the office from which she operates.

Charlemagne said the side door bore signs of forced entry.

“It hurt the Prime Minister because this man loves people,” she declared.

“When he has done so much into putting people first, and this happens, it is really disappointing for him, for us who work in the constituency office.”

Among the missing items were a 32-inch television in the constituency office’s public area and a microwave oven in the conference room.

Stand where television sat

“It’s very unfortunate at this time, and I say at this time because only this week we accumulated a whopping $250,000 to assist parents to defray the cost of back-to-school expenses,” the PM’s Youth Attaché lamented.

She also mentioned housing and other programmes to assist people, including the availability of groceries.

“When I hear my Prime Minister sound so disheartened about this situation, you can’t help feeling disheartened and disappointed,” Charlemagne told St Lucia Times.

“As we know, we have a good-natured Prime Minister who puts his everything into putting people first. It’s his mantra which he really lives up to, so when this happens at this time when so much is being given back to the community, back to Saint Lucia, back to the youth, back to children, it really puts a bad taste in one’s mouth,” she explained.

“We have no clue who the perpetrators are. It could be somebody from anywhere,” the Youth Attaché asserted.

Charlemagne said the constituency office was closed on Wednesday, putting constituents at a disadvantage.

“There is a feeling of unease,” the Youth Attaché stated.

Nevertheless, Charlemagne disclosed that measures were already in place to beef up security.

Progressive Party leader becomes Gary’s NTA deputy

Black Immigrant Daily News

THE National Transformation Alliance (NTA) is breaking new ground as it seeks to become a political umbrella organisation while building its arsenal for whenever elections are called.

Recently NTA’s interim political leader Gary Griffith announced the unveiling of a “governance team.”

Former independent candidate for St Joseph Errol Fabien, a media manager, actor, writer, producer, became the NTA’s director of communication.

Lorraine Pouchet, who served in the tourism sector for over 35 years was named a deputy political leader.

On Wednesday, leader of the Progressive Party, Nikoli Edwards. used social media to announce he would also become a deputy political leader of the NTA, while retaining his substantive position as his own party’s leader.

Even though the holding of executive roles in two political parties may be unheard of in Trinidad and Tobago’s political history, Edwards asked to be given a chance and for citizens not to dismiss this new development as unworkable.

He said the partnership could give the two parties a greater chance of success at the national polls.

He said he had acceded to requests to join forces to present alternatives to the two traditional political parties.

He explained, “Over the years, as political leader of the Progressives, I have engaged with numerous political leaders, independent candidates, members and supporters of other political entities, and both thought leaders and concerned citizens alike about the way forward.

“Following several proposals and offers from other parties and their representatives, members of the Progressives deliberated with open and frank discussions and accepted the opportunity to work with the NTA and its political leader, Gary Griffith.”

While consideration was given to the pros and cons, public perceptions, historical facts, opportunities and challenges that may arise, Edwards said, he felt he made the right choice.

“While we recognise that this is a risky decision, as are all political decisions, we are guided by the idea that with no risk there can be no true reward.

“It is the same courage that led us to launch the Progressive Party in 2019 that now leads us on this new journey.”

He said the Progressive Party would “continue to grow and develop into a formidable organisation” and would “double and triple” its efforts over the next few months “as we prepare to answer the call of the people of this country for a new political dispensation.” He said the party was prepared to return to the streets, where it had heard the views of the people whose support it sought, and could put it in a position to help them.

All of these ideals, he said, would be pursued in close collaboration with the NTA, which represents both a standalone political organisation and an umbrella organisation.

Over the next few weeks and months, he said the mechanics of this developing arrangement would be made public.

Until then, he urged supporters to understand the Progressives and NTA had found common ground on many important philosophical and practical areas, so they could work together in good faith.

“Navigating TT’s political landscape has never been an easy feat. The issues range from a lack of necessary resources, unwarranted attacks by opponents, unreliable pledges and a political system that needs overhauling.

“Nonetheless, we remain committed to the work, as quitting is not an option when TT’s success is dependent on good men and women taking bold action.”
