A Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) member was reportedly taken to hospital to be treated for injuries he received when the jeep he was driving was involved in a collision with a motorcar in St James Friday afternoon.

According to an alleged eyewitness source, four soldiers were aboard the vehicle which collided with a grey Toyota Belta motorcar along the Fairfield roadway in Montego Bay.

Following the impact, the Toyota vehicle reportedly burst into flames.

A source claimed that the driver of the JDF vehicle appeared to have suffered injuries and was taken to hospital but his condition is not immediately known.

It is also not clear whether the other soldiers who were aboard the vehicle suffered any injuries, nor if the sole occupant of the Toyota vehicle was injured.

The St James police are investigating.

Man City earn 2nd win by thrashing Bournemouth 4-0 in EPL Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Erling Haaland might not hog all of Manchester City’s goals this season, after all.

Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden were City’s scorers — along with an own-goal — in a 4-0 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, with Haaland barely getting a sight on goal at Etihad Stadium.

The Norway striker scored both of City’s goals in their opening-weekend 2-0 win at West Ham but was mostly crowded out a week later as Bournemouth sat deep with plenty of men behind the ball in a match that resembled an attack vs. defense training exercise.

City’s midfielders reaped the benefits of the extra focus on Haaland.

Gundogan’s goal did involve City’s new star striker, with Haaland holding off his marker with his back to goal and clipping a ball through to the Germany midfielder. Gundogan’s left-footed finish found the bottom corner in the 19th for his 50th goal for City.

De Bruyne scored the pick of the goals, the playmaker cutting inside on a counterattack led by Foden in the 31st, beating a defender and bending his shot with the outside of his right foot into the far corner.

De Bruyne returned the favour for Foden six minutes later, slipping a brilliant pass through the legs of a defender and into the path of his teammate, who took a touch and fired in a deflected shot that beat goalkeeper Mark Travers.

Haaland’s best chance fell in the 73rd when he mishit a first-time shot wide from Jack Grealish’s cut-back. The striker was substituted moments later.

The scoring was completed by Jefferson Lerma, who unwittingly turned a cross from Joao Cancelo into his own net from inside Bournemouth’s six-yard box.

It was a wake-up call for Bournemouth after the promoted team started the season with a surprisingly comfortable 2-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend.

City manager Pep Guardiola again chose to start with Bernardo Silva on the bench. The Portugal midfielder has been linked with a move to Barcelona and didn’t start against West Ham, either.

The potential and benefits of geothermal energy for the islands (incl. St. Maarten) – StMaartenNews.com – News Views Reviews & Interviews

~ The Leeward Islands Geothermal and Digital Interconnexion Hub Project and it’s benefits to Country Sint Maarten/St Martin ~

From our French-side correspondentMARIGOT — The Geothermal and Digital Interconnexion Hub Project for Leeward Islands is a project that is co-finance by the European funding agency Interreg Caraibes. As of 2022, the project is in the pre-feasibility stage with a total available budget of 2.9 million euros to be used before December 2023.

The pre-feasibility stage examines the potential for geothermal energy within the Leeward Islands and an inter-island digital network public partnership.

“Thus far, the heads of governments of Sint Maarten/St. Martin, Anguilla, St Barths, Antiqua, Saba, Sint Eustatius and the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis  have expressed their political will for the goals of this project”, said Omar Morales who is the project lead of EU Funds at the Collective of Saint Martin.

The Overseas Collective of Saint Martin and Unite Caribbean[1] are co-project leads ensuring steering committees meetings, financial reporting to the donors and other management aspects of the project, in addition, the overseas collective of Saint Martin explores the digital inter–island connection pre-feasibility as it observes studies of network and economic research, technical assistance needed and a governance road map.

Teranov is a French-based company that focuses on the development of geothermal energy in the Latin and Caribbean Region.[2] This company is responsible for the preliminary assessment of the geothermal resource in the islands of Saba, St Eustatius and St Kitts. On the other hand, EDF[3] which is based in Guadeloupe is responsible for the electrical interconnection pre-feasibility study, in particular, research in Geochemistry, Geology and Geo Physics.

“In regards to European Union trans-border funding agencies such as Interreg Caraibes; it’s vital that Governmental Institutions, Non-Profit Organizations and private entities focus on the development of a multi-disciplinary team that has the same common goal. This multi-disciplinary team is comprised of industry experts and in-country partners to research, design and implement such a regional project,” Omar Morales explained.

After, the prefeasibility stage, the project further goes into the feasibility and geothermal plant constructions and digital connection of fiber optics between the territorial partners. The financing of these stages ought to be determine. The European Investment Bank (EIB) is seen as a viable co-funding option, according to Omar Morales.

Sint Maarten’s Government and utility company has a big role to play in the redefining of the national energy landscape. The community should also be considered a key stakeholder. Geothermal energy has the distinction of having higher availability when compared to wind, solar and hydro forms of energy and can be delivered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is less vulnerable to hurricanes and high winds. It is arguably a viable option for Sint Maarten/St. Martin.

Imagine, a Sint Maarten experiencing a category 5 hurricane as IRMA again with a public partnership agreement with the Leeward Islands in providing geothermal energy; we can experience less intermittent energy or even load shedding. Through, geothermal energy we will become a more resilient country. Depending solely on fossil fuels and its unpredictable costs will only further worsen our overall quality of life.

On the other hand, there is a potential business model for geothermal energy. The tourism sector is one of the largest consumers of energy. The Government of Sint Maarten, for instance, can sell energy to the cruise ships at the dock. The plug in and pay business model provides cruise ships with other energy source from which government can receive a payment. It’s a win-win situation. There is economic growth relationship with geothermal energy as it can provide a competitive advantage for a country’s economy.

Furthermore, an inter-island partnership agreement for geothermal energy and a digital fiber optic ecosystem has the potential to bring down energy cost and internet cost as the expense can be spread across all territorial partners. “Developmental projects such as the Leeward Island Geothermal and Digital Interconnexion Hub Project can provide countries with economies of scale. Hence, it is vital to ensure that key stakeholders are fully engaged in all phases of this project as means to obtain milestones for resilience, other sources of energy and improved digital ecosystems,“ Omar Morales said.

As a country, we need to advocate for the potential of Geothermal Energy and digital inter-island connection in country Sint Maarten by questioning our members of parliament and future politicians. The cost of living is going up and we need to improve our quality of life. We cannot miss out on such an opportunity for our country. The opportunity is here and now.

WHO plans to rename monkeypox over stigmatization concerns

LONDON — The World Health Organization says it’s holding an open forum to rename the disease monkeypox, after some critics raised concerns the name could be derogatory or have racist connotations.

In a statement Friday, the U.N. health agency said it has also renamed two families, or clades, of the virus, using Roman numerals instead of geographic areas, to avoid stigmatization. The version of the disease formerly known as the Congo Basin will now be known as Clade one or I and the West Africa clade will be known as Clade two or II.

WHO said the decision was made following a meeting of scientists this week and in line with current best practices for naming diseases, which aims to “avoid causing offense to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional, or ethnic groups, and minimize any negative impact on trade, travel, tourism or animal welfare.”

Numerous other diseases, including Japanese encephalitis, Marburg virus, Spanish influenza and Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome have been named after the geographic areas where they first arose or were identified. WHO has not publicly suggested changing any of those names.

Monkeypox was first named in 1958 when research monkeys in Denmark were observed to have a “pox-like” disease, although they are not thought to be the animal reservoir.

WHO said it was also opening a way for the public to suggest new names for monkeypox, but did not say when any new name would be announced.

To date, there have been more than 31,000 cases of monkeypox identified globally since May, with the majority of those beyond Africa. Monkeypox has been endemic in parts of central and west Africa for decades and was not known to trigger large outbreaks beyond the continent until May.

WHO declared the global spread of monkeypox to be an international emergency in July and the U.S. declared its own epidemic to be a national emergency earlier this month.

Outside of Africa, 98% of cases are in men who have sex with men. With only a limited global supply of vaccines, authorities are racing to stop monkeypox before it becomes entrenched as a new disease.

Government Targets People’s Property For Election Graft

Government Targets People’s Property For Election Graft

OBSERVATION

As the election extravaganza approaches, Antigua people’s property is being targeted to induce new money into the election coffers, much like the YIDA injection of $2M which those two irascible young men introduced to the Leader of the ABLP, when they could not sway the then PM Baldwin Spencer to take the bait.

At the YIDA launch at Barnacle Point, the words of the Chinese translated into English promised to see the the Political Opposition of the country ‘condemned to the waste bins of history!’ YIDA, not realizing his prophecy was about himself, is now crying when all his money had been begged, borrowed, and just ripped off by his new friends!

As a business person whose business is in the cross-hairs of the same power-hungry individuals who have now gone to Africa for their corrupt imports into Antigua, I wish to warn the good people of Antigua that oncemore we are about to be ripped off of our patrimony, which we have already paid for by V.C. Bird’s purchase of the lands owned by the Sugar Syndicate, and paid for by our hard earned taxes. We bought our lands, unlike the other islands!

In order to steal the lands and businesses of the local people the Government and the Cabinet targets the property, then decides how to get the property from the local in some nefarious manner, which leaves the Antiguan destitute and dependent on a delayed Court system which never gets their case heard before they are completely out of business.

Meanwhile, the Statutory bodies are given the powers to stop the business person from progressing, by placing barriers in their way so that their revenue is stalled and then stopped totally.

So perverse is this new ABLP leadership in their collusion with outsiders to ripoff the locals, that they even offer their wives and children to the foreigners as business partners, in an attempt to sweeten the pie and give confidence to the new owners of Antigua’s lands and patrimony. Gone are the days of pride and dignity when Antiguans bragged about their land ownership bought through the wisdom of the Father of the Nation.

One Leader once bragged that his grandfather was just as important as old Bird, and that he had never drawn down on his share of the investments made by his grand-dad, whereas the Birds had taken all their shares! Clearly he is making up for time lost by encouraging all who dare to join with him for the total ripoff of what is left of Antigua lands, self-enrichment being his watchword.

A warning to all who have property in Antigua and are abroad, please be aware that the plots left to you by your grand-parents are now in danger, because the land-Grabberment in charge has surreptitiously placed cautions and liens on on your vacant land, as a measure to stealthily seize your land without your knowledge! You will have to go to Court to establish your rights, and if you are late in knowing and forced to fight to claw back, you will spend the rest of your life tangling with Government in Court for what is rightfully yours.

Meanwhile as the Court Registry is administered by the Ministry of Legal Affairs, and the fat grey minions who collaborate with the Leaders in land grabbing, and robbing people of their patrimony, files get changed and missing, and what ultimately gets before the judge after many years, is defeated by lies, mis-representations of bad lawyers, and corrupt heads of the Court’s administration.

Depending on the law and the Court to resolve land and other corrupt government administration issues is like searching for needle in a stack of sugarcane. Everything is stacked against the local Antiguan as the government has been very selective in their choice of administrators, making sure they are born elsewhere and not in Antigua. Our administrators of justice as born elsewhere, our police for the most part are born elsewhere, our chief talkers to America are born elsewhere, the holders of big money in the Private Sector are born elsewhere, even our criminals are born elsewhere!

The time has come to expose all those who have come to Antigua, gotten rich from graft and corruption, established their children and families in the frontline of all opportunities while the local Antiguan continues to fight for their political parties, remain poor, and soon landless!
