Citizens Challenged to Unite to Raise the Level of Political Discourse and Summon a Renewed Spirit of Patriotism

Black Immigrant Daily News

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 14, 2022 (SKNIS): A clarion call has been made for nationals and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis to raise the level of political discourse and summon a renewed spirit of patriotism in pursuit of a better economy, improved healthcare, enhanced educational opportunities, a healthier environment, and stronger structures of good governance.

The strong call to action was made by Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, while addressing thousands who physically and virtually attended the Swearing-in of Cabinet Members on Saturday, August 13, 2022, during an impressive ceremony at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium.

“Let us all work hard to resist the temptation of falling back into the divisiveness, selfishness, pettiness and immaturity that poisoned our politics for so long,” Dr. Drew stated. “True and enduring progress can only come when we move from a state of independence to dynamic interdependence.”

The Prime Minister reflected on the “great victory” at the August 05, 2022, polls which saw six members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party capturing the eight seats contested in St. Kitts. He noted that healing must now take place to bridge the divides and transform the twin-island Federation.

“To those voters whose support we have yet to earn and our Nevisian brothers and sisters who may not have cast their vote directly for the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, I want you to know that I value your voices, I need your help and I will be your Prime Minister too!” Honourable Dr. Drew added.

“Please keep my Cabinet in your prayers. Because as our national anthem says: “With God in all our struggles”, and with all of us working together, we shall survive and thrive. We have a country to build and a nation to mould. Let’s get to work!” the Prime Minister emphasized.

10-y-o Khari Gibson wants to put Jamaica on the map re animation Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

When I grow up, I want to become an animator.

Most of the shows that I was allowed to watch when I was younger were animated. I fell in love with animation then, and even now that I am older, I still prefer animation to live action.

In my spare time, I create my own animations using free software that I find online, such as Pivot Animator and TupiTube.

I am always watching a lot of behind-the-scene videos of my favourite animated shows. I also watch a lot of YouTube videos with interviews of creators of my favourite animations, such as Butch Hartman, creator of The Fairly Odd Parents, JG Quintel, creator of Regular Show and Close Enough, and Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons and Futurama.

These three creators really inspire me and I love their work. I even asked my mom to buy me Butch Hartman’s book, “Mad Hustle”, and I read it from cover to cover. The book speaks about how you can pitch your own animated shows to Hollywood.

I love Matt Groening’s animations for The Simpsons and Futurama, but mainly The Simpsons, especially the work done in the 90s. I am not that smitten with the modern style of animation he does for The Simpsons.

JG Quintel works with Cartoon Network and I enjoy seeing videos of the offices at Cartoon Network. The place is huge and the offices are really cool.

I also like The Amazing World of Gumball. The creator is Ben Bocquelet. However, I think the animation is all over the place. In the later seasons they changed some of the characters’ facial features, and made other changes as well, which I am not particularly fond of. I believe both the animation and the storyline in the earlier seasons are much better than in the later seasons.

When I grow up, I hope to work at one of the top animation studios such asCartoon Network and make lots of money. I hope I am able to bring back the glory days of cell animation.

Cell animation is the earlier style of animation that can be found in old cartoons such as the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, and some of the older SpongeBob Square Pants episodes. Cell animation is more costly and labour intensive, but I am ready for the challenge.

Animation in Jamaica is still in its infancy, but I know that one day I will be able to put Jamaica on the map where animation is concerned and clear a path for others to follow.

Until I am old enough to realise my dreams, I will continue watching interviews of my favourite creators, learning the craft and creating my own animations in my spare time.

Skepticism is rife over Nigerian investor floating airline in Antigua and Barbuda

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Skepticism is rife in Antigua and Barbuda over proposed Antigua Airways, a national airline in the Caribbean country in which “wealthy Nigerian investors” own the majority shares.

Nigeria Abroad has been reporting about the airline, which the Antiguan government boasts will connect the country to West Africa. Critics of the government have been doubtful, as are sections of the country’s media.

In a recent editorial titled A rather unfunny joke to be taken with several pinches of salt, the Antiguan Observer says apart from the country’s “pathetic” government notorious for fake promises, the Nigerian firm at the center of the story is dubious.

“For one thing, the parent company, Marvelous Mike Press Limited, based in Abuja Nigeria, with six to ten employees, appears to be branching off into the aviation business, and that is not an easy undertaking. They’ve only been in the printing business for about ten years, under the leadership of a gentleman named on their internet pages as ‘Mr Mike’.…

“Who would wish to do business with a supposedly reputable international printing company that makes so many mistakes in its own printed internet profile, as seen in the following script: ‘MARVELOUS MIKE PRESS limited is an ICT Driven Digital Security Printing, publishing solution Firm provided with the mandate of providing top-notch Prints services to individuals, groups, corporate bodies, non-/government department and private organizations, a multi-disciplined and indigenous company, managed and staffed by very reputable and experience professionals with the goal of delivering first-class services to its teaming clients.’ [Marvelous Mike Press Facebook] Sigh! (See how many grammatical errors you can spot in the above). Quite sad! Talk about not dotting ‘i’s’ and crossing ‘t’s’.  We will be taking this Antigua Airlines story with several pinches of sea salt.”

Going harder on the government, the editorial says: “Folks, this administration, now grown famous for attracting investors who have not delivered, is desperately grasping at straws before the next election. They have precious little to show for their stewardship over these past four years, and they are now flippantly making vain promises, trying to convince anyone who will listen that good things are about to come on stream. Don’t forget their overly optimistic declaration that Jolly Beach should be ready for opening in a few months. That was patented bs. They knew that it was bs at the time that they gleefully made the announcement, but they said it anyway. It is of a piece of the way that they do business. Of course, Josef Goebbels, the disgraced German Minister of Propaganda under the Nazi regime, would be tickled. He made famous the notion that if you repeat bs, over and over again, it gains an aura of certitude. Those in high places in this administration are of the Goebbels’ school of thought.

“We suggest that the voters of Antigua and Barbuda dismiss all the grandiose promises that will be made by the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) between now and election day. They are all designed to seduce and fool – propaganda of the highest order. Be not deceived.” by NigeriansAbroad

Information still needed on Golden Grove double murders, but Police say they expect to close some outstanding cases soon

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

The Police continue to appeal to the public for information that would help solve the murders of Pietja (Pia) Visser-Baptiste, 61, and Tyrone Baptiste, 64 some three weeks after the homicides.

The couple were found murdered in their Golden Grove home on the morning of July 20, and officers are still investigating, as they await the results of post-mortem examinations.

In the meantime, says Inspector Frankie Thomas, Public Relations Officer for the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, the coroner’s inquest has been completed.

Thomas is asking anyone with information on the murders to contact any police station or Crime Stoppers Antigua & Barbuda.

The two victims were shot multiple times about the body and the husband also had a knife wound, according to Crime Stoppers.

Meanwhile, Inspector Thomas says the Police will provide information to the public as it comes to hand, since officers are hoping to close a number of outstanding investigations.

He admits he is aware that the public is concerned about the length of time it is taking to solve some of these matters.

While this is understandable, the senior police officer says, investigations have to be done properly and according to the law. REAL NEWS

Fire-fighters’ efforts to save storeroom and contain blaze impress businessman, who promises donation of a fire truck

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Even though it received an additional tender last week, the Fire Department still had to seek the assistance of a private water truck to extinguish a fire in Donovans on August 13.

The storeroom of New System Company Ltd. reportedly caught fire on Saturday afternoon, sending plumes of dark smoke billowing into the air.

The owner of the establishment is praising the fire-fighters, who reportedly arrived on the scene within seven minutes of the call. Their efforts to save the storeroom prevented the blaze from spreading and causing major damage.

As a result, the owner of the Luxury Villas Development Company, Fausto Fattarelli, has pledged to donate a tender to the Fire Department.

Inspector Lester Bagot, spokesperson for the Department, reports further on the incident.

Reports say that employees at the business initially had attempted to put out the blaze themselves; however, after it was getting out of control, the fire service was notified.

A manager at the business reportedly said that electrical low voltage throughout the morning may have sparked the fire.

On another note, Police Inspector Frankie Thomas says the late-July fire in Greenbay, in which four homes were destroyed, is still under investigation.

He says that both the Fire Department and the Police are looking into the incident, since human remains were found on the scene after the fire. Forensic tests will have to be done to determine the identity of the deceased.- REAL NEWS

US$200M oil refinery proposed for EBD to employ 300 persons

…750 persons to be employed during construction – American investor

A US$200 million oil refinery and integrated petrochemical manufacturing complex, which will employ 750 persons during its construction and 300 permanent workers, is being planned by a United States (US) investor, Chemtech Limited, for the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).

According to Chemtech in its project summary, they have already received no-objection letters from the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest) and the Region Four Regional Democratic Council (RDC) for the project which has a proposed site on 492 acres of land at Plantation York.

“The Government of the Republic of Guyana is seeking to further diversify the economy from oil and gas, mining and the export of logs, there is a need to develop the downstream industry,” the special purpose company explained.

“This oil refinery will produce the products which is being imported at this time, the excess will be for the markets in the Caribbean, these products are being imported and sold at very high cost to the end users, the integrated complex will be a pioneer in processing 1st stage downstream products.”

The company went on to list some of the downstream products of the oil and gas sector it will be processing, such as methanol, urea and melamine, as well as marketable products such as veneer board, formaldehyde and fertiliser. These products, they noted, can generate revenue from exports and domestic profit, as well as the training opportunities for employees.

Its first phase will be focused on the integrated chemical complex, while its second phase will see a port being built to service the oil and gas sector and provide ship building and repairs. All in all, the company estimates the project will cost US$200 million.

“A strategic partnership with the Guyana Government to supply the feedstock for the oil refinery and/or private sector to supply the raw material to support the Veneer Board and Oriented Strand Board (OSB) plant and other related products in the Integrated Complex. Chemtech board industry in Guyana will utilise the adhesives manufactured from the chemical complex; the excess will be for the export market.”

“This project will create several jobs for the wood industry, the engineered board will be termite resistance, and not forgetting this will generate foreign currency. The Engineered Board (OSB) Oriented Strand Board will be an opportunity to build low-income houses, luxury homes and pre-fabricated homes for the export market. Veneer Board will allow the manufacturing sector to export world class furniture,” the company also explained.

When it comes to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the company assured that the agency’s requirements will be adhered to and that process and technical data will be available for each plant. They also listed their source of financing as United Securities Trust of Switzerland. According to the company, the oil refinery will take between 24 and 30 months to construct, while the integrated complex will take between 18 and 24. The project, it assured, would not need natural gas but would utilise products already made from the natural gas, such as methanol and urea.

This is even as procurement has already been started by the Government of Guyana for a gas-to-shore project that will have a 25-year lifespan and is expected to employ up to 800 workers during the peak construction stage, as well as some 40 full-time workers during the operations stage, and another 50 workers during the decommissioning stage. The gas-to-shore project will include a power plant and a Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) plant, all of which will be constructed under a combined Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) process within the Wales Development Zone (WDZ). The aim is to deliver rich gas by the end of 2024 for the power plant while the NGL facility is slated to be online by 2025.

The Guyana Government has already invited interested parties to make investments in the WDZ, which will be heavily industrialised and for which approximately 150 acres of land has been allocated. Those lands were previously used by the Wales Sugar Estate.

Head of the Gas-to-Shore Task Force, Winston Brassington has previously stated that ExxonMobil Guyana, which is funding the pipeline aspect of the project out of cost oil, has found that there would be substantial savings from combining these two facilities.
