Diogo Jota signs new long-term Liverpool contract Loop Jamaica

Diogo Jota has become the latest Liverpool forward to sign a new long-term contract at Anfield.

The Reds headed into the close-season with their superstar front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino entering the final 12 months of their respective deals.

Salah agreed new terms, while Mane left for Bayern Munich. Firmino has made clear his desire to stay but is yet to put pen to paper.

Now, in the week before the start of the new Premier League season, Jota has ensured he will remain a key part of this Liverpool team.

The Portugal international signed from Wolves in September 2020 and quickly established himself ahead of Firmino in the pecking order, although Mane often played through the centre last season.

This term, Jota will have further competition in the form of new signing Darwin Nunez, but the 25-year-old – who has scored 34 goals in 85 games for Liverpool – is up for the fight.

Reportedly now under contract until 2027, Jota told Liverpool’s official website: “Well, [I’m] really proud, I have to say.

“Obviously, since I arrived two years ago, I established myself as an important player in this team – that’s what I wanted from the beginning.

“Now, signing a new long-term deal, it’s obviously from the club’s perspective proof of the belief in myself as a player. For me, obviously it’s really good to establish I’ll be here for a while.

“So, the beginning of a new season, let’s do it.”

In his time at Liverpool, only Salah (60 goals, 22 assists) and Mane (39 goals, 10 assists) have scored more goals or registered more goal involvements (41 for Jota) than the striker.

Jota has impressively averaged a goal every 157 minutes in all competitions. He ranks fourth among Liverpool players over this period in that regard, behind Nunez (31), who netted on his debut on Saturday, the departed Takumi Minamino (133) and Salah (135).

Education Minister Shawn Edward Tuesday confirmed that Chief Education Officer Dr. Fiona Philip-Mayer had resigned with effect from August 15.

Edward told reporters that he had heard rumours like everyone else and acknowledged that there has been a lot of speculation and ‘political mischief’ regarding the resignation.

Asked what he meant by political mischief, the Minister said he had received communication regarding postings on some political pages insinuating that was acrimony among him, the departing Chief Education Officer, and persons at the Ministry.

“I can refute that categorically and say that the Chief and I enjoyed a wonderful working relationship. I am the Minister – I provide ministerial oversight. The chief is the senior most technical person in the Ministry of Education and the Chief’s powers and her responsibilities are clearly articulated in the Education Act in much the same way as the responsibilities and the powers of the Minister,” Edward asserted.

According to the Minister, Philip-Mayer was employed in 2019 and was not on a contract but the permanent establishment.

He described her as a hardworking individual who approached her job with a lot of commitment and passion.

And the Minister told reporters that based on the way she executed her mandate, Philip-Mayer was always willing to put the children of this country first.

“I want to profit the opportunity in my capacity as Minister of Education and also on behalf of the senior management personnel in the Ministry to wish her well in her future endeavours,” the Dennery North MP stated.

“There is not a problem. I mean it is not unheard of for professionals to demit office in Saint Lucia to take offers elsewhere. The Chief, from what I have been told, will be taking up a job overseas,” Edward told reporters.

In this regard, the Minister expressed confidence that wherever she goes Philip-Mayer will do well.

Grace Wales Bonner’s love affair with SAINT International shows no signs of waning anytime soon.

The latest creative partnership between the British-Jamaican designer Grace Wales Bonner and The Rock’s leading modelling agency is an exclusive online editorial titled ‘Sunlight Reverie’.

Lensed in Fairy Hill, Portland earlier this year by Jamaican photographer and filmmaker Jeano Edwards, the just-out photo story boasts a cast of established SAINT faces Jonny Brown and Aakesh Henderson and rookie Kevonie Crooks.

Dressed in trendsetting looks from the Englishwoman’s Spring/Summer ’22 menswear collection, Volta Jazz, the model trio took their turn on a rock-solid collaboration now six years strong.

The Wales Bonner website describes the newly released Sunlight Reverie as “a photographic exploration of the front yard as a source of pride, the opportunity for showcase, and celebration of personal style, but also the way towards shared life, towards togetherness”.

A first-year pharmacy technician student at the University of Technology, Jamaica, Crooks is pumped to see his international modelling debut finally unveiled and scoring major visibility.

Full-time fisherman, part-time model Aakesh Henderson sports Wales Bonner Spring/Summer ’22.

Speaking to Loop News, the 20-year-old divulged that it was an amazing experience working on the Wales Bonner shoot back in February.

“It felt like an adventure to me, although I was a little nervous at first,” he said, “but once I got to the shoot, I had a lot of confidence. The team on the set made me feel like I belonged and was home.”

Crooks recounted that after learning he was chosen to be among the models for the ‘Sunlight Reverie’ production, the first person he shared the news with was his mother, Denice, a wholesale supervisor.

“I was so overjoyed, and I told my mom who was even more excited than me,” the Clarendon College graduate shared.

SAINT star Aakesh Henderson is also elated to be part of yet another Wales Bonner project.

The male model, who recently returned from Italy to his Old Harbour, St Catherine home, just wrapped up jobs for a number of European luxury fashion clients.

“Honestly, my mind is blown knowing this is the fourth time I have worked with Grace,” Henderson, a part-time fisherman who is at sea when not on model duty, told Loop News.

“Mostly though it’s a pleasure working for such a ‘cultural’ designer. It’s not just her but the whole team that come together and it’s never a dull moment as I love their positive vibe.”

The SAINT trifecta of Henderson, Crooks and Brown, along with Jamaican twins Dequan and Domique Layne, were all handpicked by casting director Larissa Gunn for the project.

Sydney Rose Thomas was the appointed stylist, and Chavelle Wilson, the assistant. To rally the team, influential Jamaican film producer Maxine Walters, handled production.

“The SAINT Wales Bonner connection is one dear to my heart as it’s been consistently active since 2016, and it remains strong as Grace is keen on maintaining and exposing Jamaican model talent in the global fashion space,” SAINT CEO Deiwght Peters told Loop News.

“She has trusted my instincts in casting models for her runway shows and fashion film projects, and it’s humbling knowing our relationship has solidified with time.”

Robinson-Regis: Independence plans going ahead

Planning and Development Minister Camille Robinson-Regis. –

PLANNING Minister Camille Robinson-Regis has said the work of the inter-ministerial committee overseeing this country’s 60th Independence anniversary celebrations was proceeding.

Speaking to Newsday on Tuesday, she said, “I will be having a media conference on it. We met and so on and are proceeding.”

Asked about a budget for the celebrations and for more details of planned events, Robinson-Regis said such details would be given at the media briefing, whose date was still to be set.

The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) said in a statement on July 13 that a year-long celebration of TT’s diamond anniversary would be organised by a working committee of several ministries chaired by Robinson-Regis.

This committee included the Office of the Prime Minister and the ministries of Tourism, Culture and the Arts; Youth Development and National Service; Sport and Community Development; and National Security; and Foreign and Caricom Affairs.

Trinidad and Tobago achieved its independence on August 31, 1962, with the 60th anniversary due in four weeks.

However, the OPM’s statement on “plans for a year-long celebration” said this would include diplomatic events; cultural activities, competitions and caravans; youth-based activities; school-based competitions; community-based activities, events, competitions; awards, dinners and ceremonies; television, radio and newspaper features and nationwide exhibitions.

It also said, “Among the events being planned are the launch of a national logo, 60th-anniversary commemorative stamps and coin, national parades, gala concerts as well as other sporting and cultural events designed to showcase the multicultural, multi-ethnic, and truly cosmopolitan nature of Trinidad and Tobago.

“Care has also been taken to ensure that these activities are spread throughout TT.”

Suspicious Debe death: jewellery missing from body

POLICE have not ruled out foul play in the death of Ramraj Ramnanan, 38, but are not treating it as a homicide until an autopsy is done later this week.

This will be done once the body is tested for covid19.

Ramnanan was found face-down in a pool of blood with a wound to his forehead, outside his home at Dianthus Drive, Boodoo Trace, Debe on Sunday night.

Valuable jewellery he usually wore was missing when a private security guard found his body.

Ramnanan was wearing only boxer shorts, giving rise to the theory that he may have been called out from his home to his death.

Speaking to the Newsday at his Thirst Quenchers Bar, Boodoo Trace, Debe on Tuesday, his uncle Jaikaran Ramnanan said a search had not turned up the missing items.

Jaikaran explained the police told the family there was no unusual wound (such as a gunshot wound) and only an autopsy would determine whether the death of his nephew was due to natural causes or whether he was murdered.

Ramnanan was recovering from recent surgery to his leg and suffered from diabetes,

Jaikaran said there was something strange about his nephew’s death and believes Ramnanan was killed during a robbery. He said he was not there when the incident occurred, but could only speculate.

“He was wearing only a pair of boxers, like if he just came out of the house, as if someone he knew called him out.”

If the theory that Ramnanan fell, hit his head and died at the entrance to his home is to be believed, he said, “How then did his gold chain, valued over $100,000, his cell phone and other valuables go missing?”

He said Ramnanan was wearing the thick gold chain, which had a pendant with the word SKY, his alias. He was also wearing other jewellery at the time of his death.

“I am not accepting that reason. If you fall and hit your head, the chain would not break off your neck and fall off. Your cell phone would not disappear.”

Ramnanan, a contractor, who rented out equipment, including a wrecker and tractor, always kept a money pouch around his waist, Jaikaran said. The pouch, he said, was found minus the money, his iID card, passport and other personal documents he carried with him at all times.

Funeral arrangements are being made for Ramraj Ramnanan, who was found dead outside his home in Boodoo Trace, Debe. – Photo by Marvin Hamilton

His home was also ransacked, Jaikaran said.

“I don’t know if the police ransacked the place while searching for clues, because they did not allow family members near the body or inside his house until after they completed their investigation.

“We went in after them and found everything thrown to the ground. I don’t think that is the way police should conduct their search, if indeed it was them who did that.”

Penal police are heading investigations.
