Missing: Akeem Bissoon

By: La’Wanda McAllister

The mother of 16-year-old Akeem Bissoon of A Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, who disappeared without a trace at the Aruwai airstrip in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) on June 14 said the Police have halted their search for her son.

In a previous interview with the media, the woman, Jennifer Henry, had said that the Police were showing no form of interest in locating the teen, and had only gone to search for him once.

However, on Tuesday, she said it has now been three weeks since her son went missing, and the Police have halted their search completely.

“It is now 21 days and nobody not contacting me, nobody not telling me anything. The Police stopped looking for him. Why did the Police stop the search?” the woman asked.

On the day Bissoon went missing, the woman’s brother-in-law, with whom the teen was staying, claimed he was cooking inside the house while the teen was sitting outside at the door, and within two to three minutes the teen disappeared and was nowhere to be found. His phone and slippers were in the trail.

The woman said even though her son went missing, her brother-in-law never called to inform her of her son’s disappearance. She said it was until someone else called her that she found out that her son was missing.

The teen had left Georgetown on June 8 and went to Region Seven with his uncle. Bissoon’s mother said he had been living with her sister and brother-in-law since he was three years old.

She said she had left her son with the couple since they offered to keep him while she worked to provide for her family.

After the teen’s disappearance, the woman said her brother-in-law was arrested by the Police but was later released from custody.

“He was arrested last week for 72 hours and they release him. The Police said that they have nothing that they can arrest him for because every time they question him, he has the same story, his story not changing,” she explained.

Henry said what is even more frustrating is that everyone around her seems to be tight-lipped and is showing no remorse that her son is missing,

“Everyone is so tight-lipped. My sister, my brother-in-law, nobody is saying anything to me. If I did not call them to find out about my child then I would not have known that my son is missing. I am just praying that my son is alive. He is just a child, not an animal,” the tearful woman said.

When asked what is next moving forward, the woman said she does not know what else to do.

“I don’t know who to turn to, and where to turn to. I am just hoping for the best.” Anyone who has information about the whereabouts of Bissoon is asked to contact the nearest Police station or his mother on telephone number 6847056.

By NAN Staff Writer

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, July 6, 2022: Surinam Airways today announced it has canned several flights from Miami to Georgetown Guyana.

The flight cancellations come on the heels of several disruptions in the flight schedule of the airline recently.

The cancelled flights are on the Miami to Georgetown and Paramaribo – Miami leg of the flights scheduled on July 9th, 12th, 16th, 19th, 23rd, 26th and 30th and August 2, 2022.

“Surinam Airways acknowledges the significant inconvenience this has caused and offers hereby her sincerely apologies,” the carrier said in an email to passengers. “This development is related to the aftermath of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, operational challenges due to the lack of its own fleet and substantial increase of the fuel prices in the past three months. Surinam Airways says it is working diligently on an appropriate and sustainable solution for all affected passengers, providing compensation vouchers; free rebooking to another date and/or voucher for the value of the ticket valid for (2) years.

UPP Calls For Lower Fuel Prices In Line With Plummeting Global Oil Prices

The Political Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) Harold Lovell, is calling for an immediate reduction in the price of gasoline and diesel, in line with plummeting global oil prices.

Since the middle of June, oil prices have been on a consistent decline precipitating a sharp price drop below $100 USD per barrel on July 4th. Notably, the current global oil price has fallen more than $20 USD below what it was at the time of the ABLP’s last price hike.

“The Gaston Browne led ABLP Administration has been quick to respond to increases in the global oil price, with no attempt to cushion the impact on people and businesses. Now, after over two weeks of declining oil prices, the ABLP Administration has yet to reduce local fuel prices to a reasonable level,” Harold Lovell says. “The people need relief now – especially because no measures have been implemented to reduce their cost of living.”

A similar call was issued by President Biden, in response to declining world oil prices. On July 2, 2022 Biden tweeted “My message to the companies running gas stations and setting prices at the pump is simple: this is a time of war and global peril. Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you’re paying for the product. And do it now.”

Central Bank Records net loss of $49.1 million for the year ended 31 March 2022

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has published its 2021-2022 Annual Report and Statement of Accounts for the financial year ended 31 March 2022.

The Report, which was published on 30 June, reveals that the Bank recorded a net loss of $49.1 million for the year ended 31 March 2022 compared to a net profit of $25.2 million in the previous financial year.

The net loss for the year was largely driven by losses on foreign investment securities combined with a decline in interest income earned on foreign reserve assets, as interest rates globally remained at historically low levels over the year.

The Governor of the ECCB, Timothy N. J. Antoine said, “the current state of the global economic and geopolitical environment can be characterised as unprecedented and complex and the economies of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU), like the rest of the world, felt the weight of this difficult environment during the 2021/2022 financial year”.

He said, despite the weak global financial environment which resulted in the ECCB’s first
loss-making year in six years, the Bank continues to manage the reserves prudently thereby maintaining the strength and stability of the EC dollar.

Governor Antoine says that the 2022/2023 financial year opened with even more challenges than the previous year did and this reality will shape the Bank’s direction for the new year.

LETTER: They’re Fooling No One

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Dear Editor and Readers,

I have been watching the political atmosphere here in our country for some while sitting on the fence looking for the best option.

Weighing the options of the blue and its broken track record and the red in regard to their disregard for the suffering nationals and the ever rising cost of living being presented before us.

Never have I seen 2 gallons of gasoline cost $35.00!!

Now, I am seeing a trend that’s occurring in front of our faces; the fact that a party pays for a poll and the pollster always puts the results in the favour of the paying party.

As a fence sitter and watching the political atmosphere, this country and the electorate must not opt-out the DNA as a strong uprising party who actually have plans in place that the country needs.

It’s shameful to say the least that these pollsters deliberately avoid mentioning the DNA whilst their popularity seems to be going in the positive direction.

If the election bells were to ring now, the failing ABLP and the failed UPP could not receive a vote from me nor my household.

This country obviously needs a change outside of the binary system and I honestly think I may step off of the fence and vote for the DNA simply because of these self-praising polls that we’ve lately been seeing from those other two parties who obviously have nothing to offer.

Did you hear that UPP candidate Potter the other day when she couldn’t answer a simple question about foreign direct investment?

Where is the UPP’s shadow government who are to speak and oppose?

Look, I am not one to write editorials but i just may start so we can have robust debate in regards to this “atmosphere”.

Kamla berates Rowley for ‘toting feelings’ against journalist

OPPOSITION Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has condemned the behaviour of the Prime Minister as he berated Newsday’s Darren Bahaw at his news conference last Saturday. Persad- Bissessar questioned Rowley’s mental health.

Addressing supporters at the United National Congress (UNC) Monday night meeting, she said it was painful, “to watch Rowley go mad and meltdown” at the news conference before his departure to Suriname.

“If you all saw it, you would know that what we actually witnessed on Saturday was an embarrassing Prime Minister essentially confessing that he is powerless and incompetent to govern this country.

“After a whole month, countless scandals, storm, flood, murder spree Rowley finally resurfaced and did what, just to berate a reporter and behave like a madman.

“He berated Darren Bahaw, toting feels for about 15 years, about an alleged headline in a story written by Bahaw. I am worried about his mental health.

“Just like his AG, he may have had a memory lapse and forgot,” she said in reference to the PM’s misinformed recollection of the headline he took umbrage with.

She played the audio and video clip of the incident in which Bahaw incurred Rowley’s wrath when he sought clarification about due diligence done before appointing embattled Reginald Armour to be Attorney General.

“Look at this clip and tell me if this is any sort of behaviour of someone sitting in Whitehall.

“He cannot face tough questions and you can see how easily he melts down like a child. Imagine this man in a negotiation room and the minute things get difficult he begins to throw a tantrum.

“Mental illness is a serious issue and I am not making any jokes here. I am serious that this man’s behaviour and mental stability is a cause for concern.”

She said his misinformation about the word “appear” in relation to a court appearance and his association of criminals may have been a Freudian slip or maybe he needs a refresher course in reading and comprehension.

“I cannot say.”

She said Bahaw’s story about Rowley’s first appearance in the Landate matter was “totally legit and nothing about somebody thiefing material from a hospital in Tobago.”

“Look at how he behaved when asked about the crisis he has caused in our country by appointing the lying and disgraced Reginald Armour as AG.”

She said while Rowley buffed reporters, while saying Armour’s separation from the Miami matter was a recusal and not disqualification, Armour himself admitted he was disqualified and has appealed the ruling.

“Try as the reporter might, he could not convince Rowley that he was wrong—but madmen, dictators and unapologetic fools never admit when they’re wrong, anyway.

“But to compound his stupidity, Rowley then unleashed a stream of vicious personal attacks on reporter Darren Bahaw for an incident that took place nearly 15 years ago.”

She cautioned, “let me tell you this Rowley—no amount of ranting and disputing proper and legitimate legal terminology, be it ‘disqualified’ or ‘appear in court’ will change the fact that your lying AG has seriously compromised the sacred office of Attorney General, our Constitution, our international reputation and your failed Government, and must be fired.”

She said Rowley has reneged on his duty as Prime Minister and has admitted that he is simply incompetent and incapable of running this country.

“He is better at running out of the country than running our affairs.

“Rowley and his Government have collapsed. He must call the elections now and let the people consign him to the dustbin of our political history.”
