Michael, 54, was discovered in a pool of blood by his maid at his Dry Hill residence near the capital on Tuesday morning, showing signs of a fatal stab wound to the chest. In a news conference, Commissioner Rodney confirmed the grim discovery and emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages. “It is one of those sad occasions we have to address as investigators,” he stated, adding that police responded swiftly to the call about Michael being found unresponsive.

This Caribbean PM Calls On Sandals Resorts To Pay Outstanding Taxes

News Americas, ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, Nov. 4, 2024: A Caribbean prime minister has publicly urged Sandals Resorts International (SRI), to address outstanding tax obligations on its Antigua property, Sandals Grande Antigua.

Antigua & Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed frustration over what he described as the luxury resort’s unwillingness to fulfill its tax responsibilities, noting that Sandals owes around EC$30 million, primarily from the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax, (ABST).

During his radio show over the weekend, Browne expressed disappointment, saying that despite Sandals collecting the ABST on behalf of the government, a significant portion of the funds has yet to be remitted. He voiced concerns about what he sees as a pattern with Sandals across the Caribbean, suggesting that the resort chain’s approach has been to prioritize profits at the expense of local economies.

“I don’t understand why these ‘so-called’ investors feel that they’re the only stakeholders who should benefit. They aim to extract every bit of revenue but resist government taxation,” Browne said. He warned that a similar tax dispute occurred with Sandals in the Bahamas, resulting in payments from the hotel group.

Addressing Sandals’ Executive Chairman Adam Stewart directly, Browne asserted that the company should be invested in more than just profits, stressing the importance of fair wages for staff and the fulfillment of tax obligations to support the local economy. He stated, “Sandals is not the only stakeholder; governments and workers deserve their fair share, not just Sandals’ shareholders.”

The Prime Minister went on to critique what he referred to as Sandals’ “colonialist model” of operation, arguing that it reflects exploitative practices that undermine the socioeconomic development of the Caribbean. Browne added, “As a beloved Caribbean brand, Sandals should take pride in meaningfully contributing to the well-being of the communities where it operates.”

Browne expressed that Sandals’ practices are not only an issue for Antigua but are felt throughout the Caribbean, where similar policies are in place. SRI has yet to respond to Prime Minister Browne’s remarks and the allegations of non-cooperation with Antigua’s Inland Revenue Department.

Nearly 2 Million Eligible Caribbean American Voters Added Over Two Decades

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Nov. 1, 2024: Although often overlooked as part of the broader “Black” voting bloc, Caribbean immigrants are an increasingly significant portion of the growing pool of foreign-born eligible voters in the United States.

A News Americas analysis of the latest naturalization data from the Department of Homeland Security reveals that between 2002 and 2022, 1,838,516 Caribbean immigrants became U.S. citizens, joining the ranks of eligible voters. Naturalizations peaked in 2022, with a record 132,699 new Caribbean Americans gaining U.S. citizenship, according to DHS data.

Significant milestones over the years reflect this increase:

2008 Surge: In 2008, the number of naturalized Caribbean immigrants jumped to 131,935, likely in response to heightened interest in the landmark presidential election.

2012-2016: During the years 2012 to 2016, the naturalized Caribbean voting population remained strong, with 109,762 eligible voters in 2012 and an increase to 105,204 by 2016.

2020-2022: Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, naturalizations continued to rise, reaching 80,879 in 2020 and then sharply increasing to 132,699 by 2022, reflecting renewed motivations for U.S. citizenship within the Caribbean community.

Among Caribbean immigrants, nationals from four countries represent the largest shares of naturalized voters: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Haiti.

Cubans

Caribbean nationals from Cuba were the largest group to be naturalized in the 20-year period with almost 600,000 naturalizations at 586,476. The majority were naturalized in 2013 with a whopping 120,995 becoming US citizens. Here’s the full run down over the two decades:

Guyanese Hetmyer Returns To West Indies ODI Squad

Oct. 30, 2024: Shimron Hetmyer, the dynamic Guyana-born, West Indies batsman known for his powerful hitting, is set to make a comeback to the West Indies One Day International (ODI) team after nearly a year’s absence. Cricket West Indies has announced that Hetmyer, 27, will join the 15-member squad to face England in a three-match ODI series starting tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 31st, in Antigua.

Hetmyer’s last appearance for the West Indies ODI team was in December 2023 against England. His inclusion marks the only change to the squad that recently toured Sri Lanka, as he replaces opening batsman Alick Athanaze.

West Indies head coach for white-ball cricket, Daren Sammy, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming home series, emphasizing the historic rivalry between West Indies and England. “Playing against England always brings out a new challenge and reignites a rivalry that both the players and Caribbean fans eagerly anticipate,” Sammy said. “We showed our capability last year by beating them at home in an ODI series, and we’re ready to take on a strong England side once again.”

Sammy also highlighted the significance of home-ground support as the team aims for qualification in the ICC Men’s World Cup in 2027. “Playing at home with the local support’s energy and passion is always special,” he added. “We’ve assembled a balanced squad ready to compete with one of the best teams globally.”
