COLOUR, splendour and vibes dominated the parade of the bands on Sunday, in Scarborough, Tobago.
The event, which brought the curtain down on the island’s inaugural carnival, saw several bands parade from the Shaw Park Cultural Complex and along Milford Road through the streets of the capital.
Masqueraders also danced on the controversial stage in the sea, alongside the I Love You Tobago sign.
The stage, bordered with a wrought-iron railing, also had a colourful banner bearing the words, Welcome To Paradise, at the centre.
The parade took place before a large gathering of spectators, who lined both sides of Milford Road to view the colourful presentations.
Bon Accord-based band Fog Angels, led by Tele Cruz, was the first band to hit the parade route at around 12.30pm. Tobago Business Chamber chairman and attorney Martin George and several of his friends enjoyed themselves in the band.
Zain’s Treasures of Speyside, Iconic Mas and Jade Monkey’s A Tribute to Blaxx also crossed the stage during the early part of the parade.

The faces of spectators, of all ages, lit up when the fog and confetti machines near the VIP stands heralded masqueraders crossing the stage in the sea.
Some spectators even joined the bands as they made their way along the route.
Newsday spotted Secretary of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transportation Division Tashia Burris on the pavement taking in some of the fun as the bands passed.
Former PNM political leader Tracy Davidson Celestine was also seen at Bar Code enjoying the parade.
After crossing the stage in the sea, bands went back along the Claude Noel Highway to Orange Hill gas station, then past the Shaw Park Cultural Complex, before making their way back to Milford Road.
Around 3pm, when the last band had crossed the stage in the sea, people were eager for more. There was come confusion among a few spectators as they felt the carnival was over, unaware the bands would be coming back to that area.
Despite this, many people who spoke to Newsday were in awe by the quality of the parade.
Nicklon Baker said he was happy to see Tobago carnival drawing large crowds again.
“Some people, especially Trinidadians, won’t know but this is the most people I’ve seen in the parade of the bands before. Normally, we would have bands with 30 and 40 people. I’m glad we got our time and the focus we deserve. We can only get better from here.”
Ten-year-old Jelicia and her mother Jennifer from Trinidad told Newsday they were just happy to experience Tobago’s inaugural carnival.
Though many had become impatient and left, scores of spectators limed along the pavement to see the bands make their final lap just after 5 pm.

National Carnival Commission (NCC) chairman Winston “Gypsy” Peters was present for the festivities and said the Tobago carnival must be a fixture on the island’s cultural calendar.
“It has to be. It is the Tobago carnival. I don’t want them to celebrate Carnival in February along with Trinidad. I don’t. I want it to be carnival in Tobago,” he told Newsday.
Claiming he was among the first set of people to initiate talks about a Tobago carnival, Peters said, “It is here now and I am happy.”

Peters said he arrived in Tobago on Friday and enjoyed all of the events he attended.
“It is fantastic. It is good. I think it can only be improved on.”
THA Minority Leader Kelvon Morris described the inaugural event as a work in progress.
“A lot of money has been spent so we will have to get the accountability right. But in terms of the concept, it is one that I have always supported. I have always called or Tobago to have its own Carnival.”

He added, “I think it’s a no-brainer, we are able to benefit from our proximity and our relationship with Trinidad and we are now seeing the benefits of it.”
Morris said, though, the organisers should work closely with the NCC “so that we can build on what we have started here.
“If you have that collaboration, I see so much more benefits to this Carnival and then Trinidad and Tobago will really be the mecca of carnival; because we would have the first carnival in Trinidad – which would be great – and the last carnival in Tobago – which would be even greater.
“So I can see it as an annual event. The potential is there, and it therefore means that it is for us to do the analysis – look at what works, what didn’t work, and just build on it.”
Tobago Carnival Committee chairman Meisha Trim told Newsday last week that the island’s carnival has to be an annual event.(with reporting by Elizabeth Gonzales)

Blue Chip Masters and MavStar played undefeated in the Inaugural Independence Anniversary 3×3 Basketball Championship at the Lowmans Leeward Hard Court on Thursday and yesterday.
Yesterday’s final between the two teams was affected by rain with MavStars leading 6-4 when rain stopped play.
Games in the Championship were decided by the first team to get to 21 points or the team ahead at the end of the 10-minute matches. Should the scores be equal at that stage, play continued until one team had a 2-point advantage.
Peron Stay won the 3-point Shooting Competition on yesterday’s final day of the Championship.

West Indies’ white-ball captain, Nicholas Pooran has vowed to use the hurt of his team’s first-round exit at the ICC Men’s Twenty/20 Cricket World Cup as “motivation” to bounce back strongly.
After being beaten by Scotland and Ireland, the West Indies failed to advance to the Twenty/20 Cricket World Cup proper for the first time.
Pooran said: “Obviously, we don’t know what the future holds but we will take it day by day.
“Again, it was a learning experience for all of us and this is our journey and our story. Time will tell what will happen but for now it is just about focusing on ourselves and how we can get better as individuals.
“Rest is the ultimate and every player needs that but inside it is still hurting as well. I want to use that hurt as motivation and obviously come back strong.”
The reaction to West Indies’ early exit was sharp and swift, with CWI President, Ricky Skerritt blaming the batsmen and promising that a “thorough post mortem” would be carried out. Former Australia captain, Ricky Ponting called the exit a “disgrace”.
Phil Simmons, meanwhile, has resigned as Head Coach, with his last assignment set to be a two-Test series in Australia, which starts next month.
Pooran suggested that he would not step down as captain, but look to learn from these setbacks.
He said: “I have been thinking about the last couple of months. Playing cricket is my dream and obviously I have had my test in life as well and this is another test for me. I am a person who embraces challenges and this was just another one for me.
“It is not going to stop me. I am going to continue to learn from my experiences and again I am happy I can wake up in the morning and see that I have an opportunity to play cricket again.”

Le président somalien a lancé un appel à la communauté internationale pour venir en aide aux blessés du double attentat à la voiture piégée qui a fait 100 morts samedi dans la capitale Mogadiscio, alors que les bulldozers continuent lundi de déblayer le site de l’explosion à la recherche de victimes sous les décombres.
Les islamistes radicaux shebab ont revendiqué l’attentat, le plus meurtrier depuis cinq ans, affirmant que leurs combattants avaient visé le ministère de l’Education. L’attaque a également fait au moins 300 blessés.
Deux véhicules piégés ont explosé samedi sur une artère très fréquentée à quelques minutes d’intervalle.
Les explosions, qui ont soufflé les fenêtres des bâtiments voisins, ont submergé les hôpitaux et cliniques, dans ce pays au système sanitaire ravagé par des décennies de conflit.
“Nous appelons la communauté internationale, les frères somaliens et les autres frères (…) à envoyer des médecins en Somalie pour aider les hôpitaux à soigner les blessés”, avait déclaré dimanche le président Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, en soulignant que le nombre de victimes pourrait encore augmenter.
“Nous ne pouvons pas transporter par avion tout ce nombre de blessés (…). Nous demandons à quiconque pouvant nous envoyer de l’aide de le faire”, avait poursuivi le chef de l’Etat, après avoir lui-même donné son sang.
“En guerre”
La Somalie et “ces terroristes sont en guerre”, avait également affirmé le président Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Pour le chef de l’Etat, ce double attentat montre que les islamistes shebab ont “perdu et (…) sont incapables de contrer l’armée, de sorte qu’ils se sont faufilés pour massacrer des civils innocents”.
L’attaque a eu lieu au même carrefour qui avait déjà été frappé par le plus grave attentat jamais commis en Somalie : 512 personnes avaient été tuées le 14 octobre 2017 par l’explosion d’un camion bourré d’explosifs.
La communauté internationale a rapidement condamné le double attentat.
La mission de l’ONU en Somalie s’est engagée à se tenir “résolument aux côtés de tous les Somaliens contre le terrorisme” et Washington a vilipendé une attaque “haineuse” et assuré les autorités somaliennes de leur “soutien dans le combat pour prévenir de tels attentats terroristes impitoyables”.
Le mouvement jihadiste des shebab, lié à Al-Qaïda, combat depuis 2007 le gouvernement fédéral soutenu par la communauté internationale.
Il a été chassé de Mogadiscio en 2011 mais reste solidement implanté dans de vastes zones rurales, notamment dans le sud du pays et mène régulièrement des attaques dans la capitale et les grandes villes de Somalie.
Ces derniers mois, les shebab ont redoublé d’activité en Somalie, pays pauvre et instable de la Corne de l’Afrique, avec notamment un spectaculaire assaut, long d’une trentaine d’heures, fin août sur un hôtel de Mogadiscio.
Après cette attaque qui avait fait au moins 21 morts et 117 blessés, le président Hassan Cheikh Mohamoud avait promis une “guerre totale” pour éliminer les shebab et appelé la population à se “tenir à l’écart” des zones contrôlées par les islamistes qui allaient être visés par de prochaines offensives.
Les islamistes radicaux shebab ont également revendiqué l’attaque d’un hôtel de Kismayo, dans le sud du pays, le 23 octobre, qui avait fait 9 morts et 47 blessés.
Les forces de sécurité et des milices claniques locales ont notamment lancé des opérations militaires dans le centre du pays, qui ont permis selon les autorités de reprendre du terrain aux combattants islamistes.
Outre l’insurrection shebab, la Somalie est également menacée par une famine imminente, provoquée par la plus grave sécheresse observée depuis plus de 40 ans.

Teen shot in alleged robbery

TEEN SHOT IN ALLEGED ROBBERY
A 17 year-old young man is currently at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center nursing a gunshot wound to his leg, following an alleged robbery.
It is alleged that the Tindale Road resident went to the Chicken Hub Restaurant located on Desouza Road and rob the owners of the cash pan and attempted to flee the area and was shot in the process.
A medical doctor who was also on the scene provided medical assistance to the teen before he was transported to the hospital.
He is being treated for a wound to his left leg, which is said to be non-life threatening.
The alleged incident occurred around 12:49 am on Monday 31st October.
The police are continuing their investigations into the matter.

A 12-hour curfew has been imposed in sections of St Thomas and Kingston Eastern divisions. The curfew began at 6:00 p.m., on Sunday, October 30, and will end at 6:00 am, on Monday, October 31.
The boundaries of the curfew are as follows: NORTH: Starting at Bob Marley Beach at the mouth of Cane River extending north-westerly to the Cane River Falls community; EAST: From Cane River Falls, a line running easterly through the Gypsum Hills to end at Upper Cambridge Hill Road; SOUTH: From Upper Cambridge Hill Road, a line running southerly to end at the new South Coast Highway,
WEST: From the South Coast Highway, a line that runs westerly along the highway and end at Bob Marley Beach.
Persons within the boundaries of the curfew are reminded that during the hours of the curfew, they are required to remain within their premises unless otherwise authorized in writing by the ground commander.

Runway 10 Development Company is on a mission to develop V.C.Bird International Airport’s General Aviation by creating a business platform for Antigua’s aviation entrepreneurs.
The mission set to coincide with the celebration of our 41st anniversary of Independence, is the gifting of 33 years of aviation experience of the owners of Runway 10 lands, in a proposed development with Antigua’s Aviation entrepreneurs.
Inspired by a new direction for generational wealth proposed by a local investment platform soon to be launched in December, Antigua Hangars Inc. owner of 26 plus acres of lands around the 5000 ft runway owned by the Government, is among the first locally owned companies to be involved and act upon it.

‘Justice for Kenny’: AUA students stage protest in honour of friend left severely injured in road accident

‘Kenny was an angel’.
Those were the simple yet poignant words on one placard when devastated medical students took their anger, frustration and heartbreak to the street in honour of their friend left critically injured in a road accident.
American University of Antigua (AUA) students are demanding justice and urgent overseas treatment for Kenneth Mathew, who suffered a severe brain injury in the October 23 incident in Friars Hill Road.
Mathew, a 21-year-old first semester medical student from Dubai, and pre-med student Priyanjana Das, 19, had been crossing the recently resurfaced highway after leaving a university party at Stratos Bar and Lounge when they were struck by a car said to have been driven by Karim Edwards.
The 45-year-old accountant allegedly initially fled the scene before later handing himself into police. He appeared before court on Friday morning charged with dangerous driving, was stripped of his driving licence and bailed.
Police previously said they anticipated Edwards would be charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
But yesterday, Head of the Police Traffic Department, Rodney Ellis, told Observer, “You have 24 hours to report an accident; this individual returned to the scene within an hour.”
Today, Mathew – who had planned to dedicate his life to helping others – lies motionless in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with brain injuries that his friends say are likely irreparable.
Das suffered such severe damage to her right arm that it was amputated. Sources told Observer yesterday that she was “doing better” but remained “traumatised” by the loss of her dominant limb.
Her parents are by her hospital bedside and are also in need of “emotional support”, the source added.
Several of Mathew’s friends took part in Friday night’s demonstration. Another banner bore the frank statement: ‘You ruined their lives’.
Their visit to the scene of the tragedy also unearthed the heart-wrenching discovery of the remains of Mathew’s watch – as broken and shattered as its owner.

“We found it where the accident was,” one student told Observer. “We kept it.”
Plans remain underway to fly both students overseas for specialist care not available locally.
Das’ parents are in the process of arranging airlift for her.
Mathew’s friends previously made desperate pleas for him to be flown out of the country swiftly, saying “every hour matters to save his life”.
Meanwhile, AUA has been offering counselling to students in the aftermath of the incident.
Last week, the university issued a statement thanking the public for its “tremendous show of support” for the injured pair, adding that AUA was doing everything possible to assist both the victims and their loved ones.

Well, since you ask, I will tell you: I have come to fight for the liberation of my community and my country from vagabonds and exploiters like you and Cutie Benjamin, possibly the worst leaders the Caribbean has ever seen.
I was socialized and trained by both my parents — whom I know — to love, cherish and serve others.
I have taken that knowledge and lived in the wilderness of another man’s land to accomplish my greatest achievement: raising and educating both my children, who I know are mine.
I have learned much from serving others around the world, and I will now apply that experience to the development of my Nation.
You have been in political leadership for decades and Prime Minister for the past eight years, and you have served only yourself, using your family, and your cronies. No one will remember your name when the people remove you from office. Your name will be obliterated form the books of history. Your generations will suffer because of your idiocy.
Now, I have received the call and have answered – to free the people of City South and serve my Nation. There is no higher work to which I can devote my life.
My task is to mobilize my brothers and sisters, the citizens and residents of this country, and collectively drive the proverbial bullbud in your tail.
We will then, as a people, march to our promised land; a land that we will develop for all the people: those born here and those who have made this country their home. We will repair and build a nation in which all our people can grow, thrive, prosper; a land of which our children yet unborn can be proud.
I am going to be the thorn in your flesh. I am going to remind the people how nasty, greedy, wicked, bad minded, and treasonous you are. I am going to drive the bullbud under your tail.
I pledge to expose the criminal industrial complex over which you and your cronies preside. We will ALL soon know the source of your sudden wealth.
Nothing you do or say will deter me. I will continuously use my platforms to share ideas, educate, inspire and develop our people while you spew hate; slander the names of citizens and residents of this country; and bully your weak Cabinet colleagues.
I have been called for a time such as this, and no weapon formed against me will prosper; so come, try me, cause ebry bully hab dem cooler.
