Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 27, 2022 (SKNIS): Most Members of the Federal Parliament (MPs) in St. Kitts and Nevis wore pink on Thursday (October 27, 2022) in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is celebrated annually in October.

Parliament Speaker the Honourable Lanien Blanchette used the first official Sitting of the National Assembly to highlight the value of the support shown by the MPs for persons who are affected or impacted by breast cancer.

“We recognize that breast cancer is not present only in October. However, we use this month and this moment to register our support for and solidarity with those diagnosed with this disease and their families as well as caregivers who struggle with them,” she stated while addressing the MPs, persons in the gallery, and the nation. “We also offer our support to the survivors and thrivers who have won the battle.”

Speaker Blanchette noted that the MPs are joining with the medical community in encouraging and promoting healthy eating, regular exercise and knowing your bodies. She further encouraged women forty (years) or over to have annual mammograms as recommended by health professionals.

“Let us continue to educate ourselves about breast cancer, not only in October but all year round,” she said.

An important part of that education is the knowledge that men can also develop breast cancer.

Speaker Blanchette called for continued support to organizations such as the Pink Lily Cancer Care Foundation in Nevis, as well as the Reach for Recovery Breast Cancer Group and the Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation in St. Kitts.

In conclusion, the Speaker encouraged individuals to turn out in their numbers to support the Essence of Hope I CancerVIVE Pink Walk on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 5:30 a.m.

Government of St. Kitts and Nevis Repeals COVID-19 (Prevention and Control) Bill

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, October 27, 2022 (SKNIS) – With the passage of the amendments to the Public Health Act in the National Assembly, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has successfully repealed the COVID-19 (Prevention and Control) Bill and effectively signalled to the world that St. Kitts and Nevis is truly open for business.

Prime Minister and Minister of Health, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, who was the mover of the Public Health (Amendment) Bill, 2022, indicated that the COVID-19 (Prevention and Control) Act significantly affected and impacted the lives and livelihoods of thousands of citizens and residents.

“Social distancing and physical distancing were also really part of the measures that were included and we remember very well that you couldn’t visit family members. We remember very well that people could not socialize in the way they were accustomed to… [There were] restrictions on social activities as we saw the Orange Economy really being hit hard where entertainers could not earn and had difficulties meeting their obligations. Education and religious institutions were also affected,” the Honourable Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Drew stated that for months prior to the 2022 General Election, scientific evidence existed that had shown that there was no longer any need for most of the COVID-19 restrictions in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Prime Minister said, “During the campaign of 2022, I said repeatedly that one of the first things that I would lead the new administration to do was to get rid of all the [COVID-19] protocols that did not make sense. Madam Speaker, I want to say to the country and to the region and to the world that the science had already existed since May of 2022 that we could have lift these protocols and people were advised to lift them but because persons were using the law and pseudoscience for political expediency our people had to suffer for an unnecessary number of months.”

Dr. Drew said that the Act was repealed today so that citizens and residents here in St. Kitts and Nevis can now regain their “freedoms and return to a life, an existence of normalcy.”

The Public Health (Amendment) Bill, 2022 received significant support from Members of the Honourable House on both sides before it was eventually passed.

One of the first acts of the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party-led administration after being elected to serve was to remove all COVID-19 travel protocols to allow all citizens, residents and international travellers entry into the Federation without restrictions.

The Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport wishes to inform the public that the Rockhall – Pavee intersection will be closed to vehicular traffic from Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022.

This closure is necessary in order to effect urgent replacement of a damaged culvert at that intersection, which has severely compromised the structural integrity of that section of road, risking collapse at any point in time.

As a result, motorists will be unable to enter Rockhall via the Pavee Road, and vice versa until the repair works have been completed.

The estimated time for completion is two (2) weeks.

With consideration given to the considerable use of both Rockall and Pavee as main thoroughfares for many motorists, a traffic management plan will be communicated to the public in the coming days.

The Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport regrets any inconveniences caused as a result of this closure.

Seprod Foundation partners with Ja Fire Brigade for safety awareness Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Each year, the Jamaica Fire Brigade joins the rest of the world in observing Fire and Life Safety Awareness Week to raise awareness of the importance of being prepared in the event of a fire.

This year, it is being observed between Sunday, October 23 and Saturday, October 29, under the theme “Preserving the Nation through Life Safety and Fire Prevention”, with a focus on the disabilities and access and functional needs community.

According to Sean Martin, Chief Fire Prevention Officer, “The Brigade will be using this opportunity to engage primarily with persons with disabilities and their caregivers to improve the levels of fire safety being experienced by this vulnerable group.”

Martin continued, “we are pleased to have formed partnerships with public and private stakeholders, such as Seprod that is providing support in the form of products from their distribution line.”

Seprod Foundation answered the call and has offered support by providing over 200,000 worth of products to be distributed to children’s homes and households that have been affected by fire, and by assisting in raising awareness about the importance of fire safety and prevention. The products were handed over to the Jamaica Fire Brigade on October 24, 2022, to support the activities for the rest of the week.

Richard Pandohie, CEO of the Seprod Group of Companies and Director of Seprod Foundation commented: “We continue to be heart-broken by the cases of families being devastated by the loss of their loved ones due to fire; as recently as September, 3 children died after a fire destroyed their home. We want to stop these tragedies, and this is why the Seprod Foundation is working with the Jamaica Fire Brigade during Fire and Life Safety Awareness week to highlight the steps that each of us can take to ensure the safety of our lives and that of our families and colleagues. We also want to salute the men and women in our Fire Brigade for the sacrifices that they make on a daily basis.”

About one year ago, Seprod experienced a fire that destroyed the Facey Commodity warehouse and offices at Newport West.

Spain’s state prosecutor drops charges against Neymar Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Spain’s state prosecutor dropped its charges against Neymar on Friday, but a Brazilian company involved in the case will continue to fight the soccer player in court.

The case stems from Neymar’s transfer in 2013 from Santos to Barcelona.

The state prosecutor withdrew all charges against Neymar, his father and the former executives of the Brazilian and Spanish clubs. However, the trial will continue because Brazilian company DIS, which brought the case, maintained its accusation that the parties involved committed fraud and corruption.

DIS claims that it was paid far less than the 40 per cent it says it was due as part owners of Neymar’s player rights.

The state prosecutor announced the decision to drop the case after hearing testimony from former Barcelona executives Sandro Rosell and Josep Bartomeu on Friday. State prosecutor Luis Garc?a told the court he did not see any evidence that a crime was committed.

All the defendants deny any wrongdoing.

State prosecutors had been seeking a two-year prison sentence and a fine of 10 million euros ($10 million) for Neymar. They had also wanted five years for Rosell and three years for the former president of Santos, Odilio Rodrigues.

Neymar, who now plays for Paris Saint-Germain, told the court last week that he had “followed my heart and chose Bar?a.”

DIS is seeking five-year jail terms for the 30-year-old Neymar, his father, Rosell and Bartomeu. DIS also wants compensation of 34 million euros ($34 million) and a fine of 195 million euros ($194 million) that would be paid by the accused to the Spanish state.

“In the opinion of DIS, no new evidence has appeared in the five days of this trial to justify changing our stance regarding what took place,” DIS said in a statement shared with The Associated Press.

DIS, which owns a chain of supermarkets in Brazil’s S?o Paulo region, said it acquired rights to receive 40 per cent of a future Neymar transfer in 2009 when it paid Neymar’s family 5 million Brazilian reals (then $2 million).

DIS says it only received its due percentage from the 17 million euros ($17 million) that Barcelona and Santos initially announced as the transfer fee between the clubs, while the real cost was about 82 million euros ($82 million).

The trial is expected to conclude on Monday.
