Rishi Sunak, UK’s next PM, faces major economic problems Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

Former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak is set to become Britain’s first prime minister of colour after being chosen Monday to lead a governing Conservative Party desperate for a safe pair of hands to guide the country through economic and political turbulence.

The challenges facing the UK’s third prime minister this year are enormous: He must try to shore up an economy sliding toward recession and reeling after his predecessor’s brief, a disastrous experiment in libertarian economics, while also attempting to unite a demoralized and divided party that trails far behind the opposition in opinion polls.

In his first public statement, Sunak said “the United Kingdom is a great country, but there is no doubt we face a profound economic challenge.”

“We now need stability and unity, and I will make it my utmost priority to bring our party and our country together,” said Sunak, who at 42 is Britain’s youngest prime minister in 200 years.

Sunak will be the first British prime minister with South Asian roots and its first Hindu leader — a milestone for a country with an extensive colonial past, and one that is still contested.

Elected party leader on the major Hindu festival of Diwali, Sunak takes over from Liz Truss, who quit last week after 45 tumultuous days in office. His only remaining rival, Penny Mordaunt, conceded and withdrew after failing to reach the nomination threshold of 100 Conservative lawmakers needed to stay in the race.

Sunak will now be asked by King Charles III to form a government and becomes the prime minister in a handover of power from Truss on Tuesday.

Victory is vindication for Sunak, who lost out to Truss in the Conservative election to replace former Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the summer when party members chose her tax-cutting boosterism over his warnings that inflation must be tamed.

Truss conceded last week that she could not deliver on her plans — but only after her attempts triggered market chaos and worsened inflation at a time when millions of Britons were already struggling with soaring borrowing costs and rising energy and food prices.

The party is now desperate for someone to right the ship after months of chaos — both during Truss’ short term and at the end of Johnson’s.

As finance minister, Sunak steered the economy through the coronavirus pandemic, winning praise for his financial support for laid-off workers and shuttered businesses.

He now faces the huge challenge of calming markets and trying to tame inflation at a time of weakened government finances, a worsening economic outlook and a wave of strikes. Treasury chief Jeremy Hunt, appointed by Truss 10 days ago, is due to make an emergency budget statement Oct. 31 — if Sunak keeps him in the job.

Britain also faces broader economic problems stemming from the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the country’s exit from the European Union in 2020. Sunak was a firm supporter of Brexit.

Sunak was cheered wildly by Conservative lawmakers during a packed private meeting in Parliament minutes after he won the contest on Monday.

Former Cabinet minister Chris Grayling said Sunak had urged the party “to unite and fix the problems the country faces” and had got “a rapturous reception.”

Therese Coffey, who was Truss’ deputy prime minister, said the whole party should support Sunak now.

“We need to get behind him,” she said.

But Sunak still faces resentment from supporters of Johnson for quitting the government in July, a move that helped topple the then-leader. His background as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and his wife’s vast wealth — she is the daughter of an Indian billionaire — also fuel a sense he is out of touch with the struggles of ordinary people.

He takes the reins after Truss’ proposal for aggressive tax cuts that would be paid for through government borrowing pummeled the value of the pound, drove up the cost of government borrowing and home mortgages, and forced emergency Bank of England intervention. Truss executed a series of U-turns and replaced her Treasury chief but faced rebellion from lawmakers in her party that obliterated her authority.

In the lightning-quick contest to replace her, Sunak’s position strengthened after Johnson dramatically quit the race on Sunday night, ending a short-lived, high-profile attempt to return to the prime minister’s job he was ousted from little more than three months ago amid ethics scandals.

The prospect of a return by Johnson had thrown the already divided Conservative Party into further turmoil. He led the party to a thumping election victory in 2019, but his premiership was clouded by scandals over money and ethics that eventually became too much for the party to bear.

He threw in the towel late Sunday despite insisting he was “well placed to deliver a Conservative victory” in the next national election.

The Conservative Party turmoil is fueling demands for a national election. Under Britain’s parliamentary system, there does not need to be one until the end of 2024, though the government has the power to call one sooner.

Currently, that looks unlikely. Opinion polls say an election would spell disaster for the Conservatives, with the left-of-centre Labour Party winning a large majority.

Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London, said the Conservative Party is “not out of the woods yet” even after choosing Sunak.

“And certainly I think voters, while possibly they may give Rishi Sunak a little bit of a bounce, a little bit of credit for not being Liz Truss, are certainly out of love with the Conservative Party as a whole,” he said. “So I don’t expect this to make an enormous amount of difference to the opinion polls.”

5 buildings, 1 vehicle damaged; 10 homeless after Berbice fires

The fire at Corriverton

Firefighters in Berbice have been in full action following reports of five fires in the region.

Fires in both East and West Berbice have resulted in five buildings being damaged, two of which were completely destroyed.

Additionally, a car was also destroyed in one of the fires.

Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald says ten people are now homeless as a result of those fires.

One of the fires, he said started from a car which then spread onto a house at Number 50 Village, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) on Monday morning.

That fire damaged two buildings.

At about 10:30h on Monday, the car which was parked under a building, suddenly burst into flames. It is still not clear what caused that fire. Nevertheless, the flames spread to the building which was owned by a US citizen and occupied by the owner of the car Enrique Hintzen and two others.

The fire quickly spread to a second building. However, the quick action by residents resulted in them being able to control the blaze.

The Corriverton Fire Service responded quickly and was able to put out the fire.

Meanwhile, at about 8:00h firefighters on the West Coast of Berbice, Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice) responded to a call of a fire at Number 8 Village.

Marcel Bobb, who lived there with three other family members, reported that his gas stove burst into flames.

According to McDonald, forensic fire investigators have revealed that the hose to the gas stove was leaking as a result of a rupture. He said the naked flames from the gas stove ignited the gases, causing the inferno.

Personnel from Onverwagt Fire Station responded but by the time they arrived on the scene the fire was already extinguished by occupants of the building.

McDonald is high in his praise for the community effort which he referred to as being swift and prompt.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, seven persons were left homeless when a fire at Corriverton, Region Six spread to two additional buildings at Goor Persaud Avenue.

Reports are that the fire started at the house owned by 23-year-old Stacy Johnson, a government part-time employee attached to Number 76 Health Centre.

Johnson and six other family members occupied the building.

Reports are that at about 13:00h a child was playing with a lighter and paper and during the playful experiment, the fire caught and other combustible material.

The fire quickly spread to the next building which was occupied by Beharazade Amin and two other family members.

Both buildings were completely destroyed.

When the fire service arrived on the scene, one of the buildings was ready gutted and another fully engulfed in flames.

With no water source available, the firefighters were forced to shuttle water in their supply tank which has a capacity of 400 gallons.

Additionally, the fire spread to a third building which is occupied by a couple. However, firefighters were able to prevent extensive damage to that building.

Reports are that after the fire was initially seen in the first building, people did not know what number to call to get a quick response fire department.

In the wake of this, McDonald said citizens can call the fire department on the following emergency numbers.

The Saint Lucia Fire Service (SLFS) has reported 86 responses for the weekend of October 21-24, observing that calls relating to violent and traumatic incidents seem constant.

“While total number of responses may be lower than other weekends, the number of responses to traumatic and violent incidents appears to be constant,” SLFS Communications Officer Stacy Joseph disclosed.

Joseph explained that “with very little time for mental recovery,” the fire department responded to eight motor vehicle incidents and two physical assaults.

There were also four shootings.

They included one at Faux A Chaud, Castries, on Saturday in which sixteen-year-old Miguela Joseph succumbed.

The SLFS Communications Officer said the emergency crew responded to that incident at about 12:50 pm and found the teenager and police officers at the scene.

“A rapid assessment of the victim revealed that she sustained a penetrating wound to her head and was void of all vital signs,” the SLFS spokeswoman stated.

She explained that due to obvious signs of death, the responders left the scene in the care of the police.

Black Immigrant Daily News

St Michael North West Member of Parliament Neil Rowe has pleaded not guilty to rape.

The accused appeared in the Oistins Magistrate’s Court before 9:30 am, today, October 24, 2022.

He was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 with one surety.

There was no objection to bail, however, Magistrate Deidre McKenna gave one bail condition, that the accused stay away from the female complainant. She added, “You are not to message her via social media or otherwise.”

Rowe is represented by Attorney-at-law Roger Forde KC and Attorney Safiya Moore.

Wrapping up his remarks on first appearance for Rowe, who was supported in the courtroom by family, friends and the newly-elected CEO of the BLP Senator Patricia Parris, Attorney Forde lamented, “About 15 years ago I came in this court and represented this chap for rape and he got bail and whatever” and the complainant went away and two or three months later, he said, “she came back to my office” and said she felt scorned because he had another lover. So he told the court, “I’m just saying [this to show] how is easy to get charged with rape and come and tell me sorry.”

The case is adjourned until January 30, 2023.

Lil Baby Pulls A Shaggy, Denies Being In Photo With Saweetie Sitting On His Lap

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

Lil Baby is denying that he was a part of the ‘no face, no case’ photo posted by rapper Saweetie last year.

The photo caused some hurt feelings after Saweetie was spotted sitting on a man’s lap with his outfit showing but not his face. Fans snooping later put two and two together and arrived at the juicy conclusion that Lil Baby was the one in the photo, as his fit from a photo he posted on his account on the same was eerily similar.

While on the Big Facts Podcast, the rapper was asked about whether he was the mystery man in the photo. “Nah,” the rapper said while the hosts erupted in laughter at Lil Baby’s hilarious expression. “It ain’t me. for real, I ain’t be lying, no,” he said while laughing.

Fans have reacted to Lil Baby’s response, but not many think his answer is believable as the events that occurred after Saweetie’s posts have been documented.

Shortly after the picture was posted, Lil Baby appeared to answer fans’ questions about whether they were dating especially given that Saweetie had recently broken up with Quavo and Quavo/Migos and Lil Baby were not particularly friendly.

At the time, too, Lil Baby’s on and off again girlfriend and mother of his son, Jayda Cheaves, also seemed to have an issue with the post.

In an interview in December, Jayda addressed the rumor that her ex was dating Saweetie, noting that not only did she know about the date, which included shopping at Chanel, but she also appeared hurt that Baby would take his date to do something he did with her.

“The day it happened, I knew about it,” Jayda said as she explained that she had eyes and ears in public that kept tabs on Lil Baby.

“How are you gonna do that to Miss Chanel herself? You don’t think I’m gonna find out about that? I was waiting on somebody to say something,” she said.

Despite saying that he was not the guy in the photo, fans also think that Lil Baby was referring to Saweetie in a recent song and taking shots at Quavo as he directly replied to his “swap it out” comments.
