The bus driver who was held after he was recorded committing several traffic breaches and putting several motorists at risk in Half Way Tree has now been charged.

The police said the driver whose name they have not released has been slapped with five charges and there are indications that more could be handed down in the coming days.

The police said the driver has been charged with: dangerous driving, and disobeying a traffic light.

He was also charged for not having a PPV badge, defective tires, and permitting body protrusion.

Reports are that the tint was also removed from the bus, the sound system removed from the vehicle and the bus seized.

L’ex-star de l’équipe de France et du Bayern Munich Franck Ribéry a officialisé vendredi la fin de sa carrière professionnelle, à 39 ans, en raison de douleurs persistantes à un genou, dans une vidéo diffusée sur les réseaux sociaux.

“La douleur à mon genou n’a fait qu’empirer et les médecins sont formels: je n’ai plus le choix, il faut que j’arrête de jouer. Je dois donc mettre un terme à ma carrière de joueur professionnel”, explique Ribéry, qui évoluait depuis l’été 2021 à la Salernitana, en 1re division italienne.

Ribéry, qui avait explosé en mondovision pendant le Mondial-2006 en portant les Bleus lors du huitième de finale gagné contre l’Espagne (3-1), met fin à 22 années de carrière, dont le sommet aura été la saison 2012-2013 avec le Bayern Munich, auteur cette année-là du triplé Championnat-Coupe-Ligue des champions. 

Il était d’ailleurs passé tout près du Ballon d’Or au terme de cette saison-là.

“Merci Franck!”, a lancé dans la foulée, et en français, le Bayern Munich sur son site. “Une véritable légende du FC Bayern quitte la grande scène du football, a écrit le club allemand. 

“C’est la fin d’un beau chapitre de ma vie”, ajoute Franck Ribéry dans la vidéo diffusée sur Instagram et Twitter, où il officialise cette retraite annoncée il y a quelques semaines par des médias.

Nouveau rôle à la Salernitana

“C’est la fin d’un chapitre, celui du joueur, mais pas la fin de mon histoire professionnelle, vous pouvez en être sûr. Alors je vous dis à très bientôt pour le début d’un nouveau beau chapitre”, conclut Ribéry, qui n’a plus joué depuis août.

Le club de Salerne a confirmé, dans un communiqué, avoir “résilié d’un commun accord la relation contractuelle avec Franck Ribéry”, arrivé à la surprise générale dans le petit club de Campanie après deux ans à la Fiorentina (2019-2021). 

Comme l’avait évoqué il y a quelques semaines la direction, la Salernitana confirme par ailleurs que Ribéry “continuera, dans un autre rôle, à faire partie du club”. 

“On va lui confier un rôle, celui qu’il voudra”, soit dans la direction soit dans l’encadrement technique entourant l’équipe de Serie A, avait affirmé le 9 octobre le patron du club italien Danilo Iervolino

Ribéry saluera les supporters samedi après-midi à l’occasion du match contre la Spezia, comptant pour la 11e journée de Serie A. 

“Le club le remercie pour sa passion et son dévouement au travail, pour avoir porté avec le plus grand respect le brassard de capitaine lors de la saison (dernière, ndlr) qui a mené au maintien historique en Serie A et pour avoir honoré au mieux les couleurs des Grenats”, ajoute la Salernitana.

À la sortie de la courte réunion du conseil d’administration du MACTe, qui s’est tenue,  jeudi matin à l’espace régional du Raizet, le président de Région et président du conseil d’administration du Mémorial ACTe, Ary Chalus a annoncé que le personnel licencié sera réintégré et que la directrice reste pour l’heure en poste. 

À la fin de la réunion du conseil d’administration
du Mémorial ACTe, qui a duré à peine plus d’une heure, le préfet
Alexandre Rochatte s’est rapidement éclipsé de l’espace régional du
Raizet laissant les administrateurs et Ary Chalus, leur président,
s’exprimer devant les journalistes. A l’ordre du jour deux points
étaient inscrits :  les missions de la directrice générale de
l’EPCC (établissement public de coopération culturelle) et la
réintégration du personnel dont la demande d’autorisation de

Bryan discusses affordable housing for tourism workers Loop Cayman Islands

Speaking at the Cayman Islands Tourism Association’s annual general meeting at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort on October 20, 2022, Minister for Tourism, Kenneth Bryan, noted that he was aware of concerns that the CITA president raised about the challenges faced by tourism workers in finding affordable accommodation.

As to the source of the problem, real estate speculation is often blamed as one of the factors driving the high prices. In addition, the cost of living has steadily increased in other areas, as demonstrated by the rising consumer price index published by the Economics & Statistics Office for the first three quarters of 2022.

Exacerbating the situation is that hundreds of new hotel workers may need to be brought in from overseas over the next 24 months to fill jobs as new hotels come online. These new staff members may drive up the demand for accommodation and, perhaps, further push up rental and home ownership prices.

Addressing the problem, Bryan said: “I’ve reached out to Minister Jay Ebanks and asked for an understanding as to what solutions are being worked on and whether there is anything within my power that can be done to ensure that our tourism workers have the necessary housing.”

How the issue of affordable accommodation for tourism workers is addressed by the government may be ticklish for Caymanians, however, since some Caymanians are finding it difficult to find affordable homes themselves.

Regarding the struggle faced by Caymanians, Minister for Housing, Jay Ebanks, has been trying to help Caymanians through a number of initiatives offered by the National Housing Development Trust. These plans include more modern and better quality, affordable homes in various districts.

However, the experience to date is that many more Caymanians have submitted applications than there are affordable homes available (indicating that demand by Caymanians for affordable homes is far greater than anticipated). In the circumstances, it may be the case that some Caymanian applicants may have to wait until the next go-round of affordable housing construction to be considered for a home within an affordable housing community.

Acknowledging the difficult issue, Bryan said that government recognizes “that housing has been a growing problem in the Cayman Islands” and the members of government have been “working closely together to find solutions.”

Offering a solution, one member of the public attending the CITA meeting told Loop that “more infrastructure fees should be collected from developers or developers should be asked to build a certain number of affordable housing units” when they are constructing large new hotels or other buildings. This way, developers would be doing their part to contribute to the number of affordable housing units on the market.

Cop killed in Trench Town identified; high command condemns attack Loop Jamaica

The policeman who was shot and killed by gunmen in Trench Town, St Andrew on Thursday has been identified.

He is Corporal Oliver Mullings, who was assigned to the Kingston West Police Division.

Reports from the police are that at about 10:45pm, the corporal was among a team of officers, who responded to a call from residents in the area when they were attacked by gunmen.

Mullings was reportedly injured during a shootout with the criminals. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Another man, alleged to be a gunman, was also killed in the incident and an illegal firearm was seized.

The death comes days after another Constable Brian Martin of the St Andrew Central Police Division died after being shot at a wake on Maxfield Avenue, also in St Andrew.

The police high command has since condemned the corporal’s killing and has also expressed condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of Mullings.

“The JCF is committed to conducting a thorough investigation and to apprehend the persons responsible for his death,” the high command said in a release.

THE Prime Minister reacted to the resignation of British Prime Minister Liz Truss by warning that any instability in the UK could have a global impact, in a text reply to queries by Newsday on Thursday. Truss resigned after 45 days in office, after reversing her disastrous tax-cut plans which had panicked the British economy, and after the resignation of Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

The 1922 committee of backbench MPs which guides Conservative Party elections said MPs will vote in one or two stages for a new leader on Monday, with any tie possibly being resolved by ordinary party members later on in an online vote, all to produce a winner by next Friday, if not before.

UK Opposition Leader Keir Starmer, who gave a guest lecture as then British DPP in 2011 at Hugh Wooding Law School, has called for fresh UK general elections.

Dr Rowley said, “Instability in Britain is a problem for all of us given the integrated nature of the international economy.

“Incidentally, as Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister, I am about to see my fifth British Prime Minister, with the possibility of seeing seven.”

Newsday asked what his reaction had been upon hearing the news of her resignation.

Rowley replied, “Not surprised. It was a very predictable outcome

“Even though it really did occur a little earlier than expected.”

Rowley concluded, “We all are hoping for a renewed period of economic and political stability in the UK since the alternative will have negative consequences for the economies that we depend on for market benefits.”
