Growing a business in real estate – The Montague way Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

Joseph and Tara Montague have the distinction of being the first husband and wife real estate team in Jamaica and have won several awards while learning the real estate business from the ground up.

Married for five years and with two small children, the Montagues have managed to not only carve out a place for their brand in the industry but have been doing so while also holding down their regular 9-5 jobs.

The couple met over 10 years ago while on a night out with friends and struck up a friendship. But, it was not until they decided to acquire a property and had a “not all good but not all bad” experience, that they realized they were being groomed by life to venture into the business themselves.

“It was a mixed experience. There were some times when we felt like we weren’t being advocated for. But, in retrospect, we recognize that it all worked out for our good,” Tare shared with Loop News.

While noting that many elements of their home-buying experience could have been handled differently, the Montagues said they realized that they could, in turn, help others to accomplish their dream “in better ways than we experienced.”

The couple bought and renovated a fixer-upper which, they said, gave them even greater insights into how to execute such developments and also ignited their inner talents.

“But the fact that we had our full-time jobs, we thought it better do it as a team because real estate is a demanding industry,” Joseph said.

Tara, a registered nurse and medical representative for an international pharmaceutical company, brings the “nurturing side to the business to walk our clients through the process,” Joseph told Loop News while he adds his skills in marketing and business management, having acquired two degrees in the area.

Tara’s passion for home also design complements Joseph’s technical and business management skills, the couple said.

“For example, because I am a late-night person, I will be up late sending emails. She is an early morning person so she will get up in the morning and catch emails that came in when I was off so it almost feels like we are on the job 24 hours,” Joseph noted.

“With this team approach, our clients benefit tremendously because her strengths coupled with mine, they get the full package,” he said.

According to the Montagues, the key to balancing working together and growing as a couple is multi-pronged.

“Because it crosses both professional and personal where you are literally working with your partner, we try to be there for each other as best as possible. We are a team in real estate but we are also a team in life,” Tara said.

The trick, she said, is keeping the lines of communication open and being able to identify when your partner needs a break.

“It gets stressful. We are fully employed otherwise and here we are trying to build our family business. But we both can identify when either of us needs a break or when we need to ease the pressure off the other person,” Tara said.

She continued: “Honestly, sometimes all it takes is a little conversation where, for example, Joseph will let me know all of what’s going on with him and we try to assist each other,” Tara shared.

Planning around the family’s schedule and involving the children also makes it easier to manage their multiple roles and projects, they said.

“If we have to go out of town, we turn it into a family trip. We get the business out of the way early then try to go to the beach or just spend time with each other because at the end of the day we can’t sacrifice our family life and our family time,” Tara said.

Already, their four-year-old son knows what an investment property is.

“It is said you don’t give your child what you didn’t get, you teach them what you didn’t know and we are big on that,” Tara said.

In the two years since they launched their real estate careers, the Montagues have won the Instagram Top Agent award, Top Producer, Top Marketers and Top Team awards within their brokerage house, Gourzong Reality.

They plan on opening their real estate brokerage firm eventually. But for now, they are learning and growing.

On the matter of growing together financially, the Montagues suggest being aligned in purpose and vision.

“Be aligned in terms of where you want to go. Know your partner and make sure it is somebody you can trust and rely on. Someone who is not going to be spending frivolously,” Joseph said.

“As a couple, be selfless. Be willing to invest some money because both parties will not have the same amount to contribute all the time to make the dream happen,” he added.

For Tara, growing a brand and business as a couple also means respecting each other, recognizing each other’s strengths and leveraging them to support the elements of the business and each other.

Nottingham Forest draw against Aston Villa 1-1

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: NBC SVG

Nottingham Forest moved off the bottom of the English Premier League Football Table with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at the City Ground in Nottingham yesterday.

The result ends a sequence of five consecutive defeats for Nottingham Forest, who moved up to 19th in the table, a point above Leicester City, and four points behind Aston Villa who remain 16th.

Roared on by a vociferous City Ground crowd, Emmanuel Dennis gave Nottingham Forest the perfect start, capitalizing on some poor marking to head in Morgan Gibbs-White’s free kick which drifted across the front of a static Aston Villa defence.

However, Ashley Young levelled seven minutes later with a superb effort from 25 yards that flew into the bottom left corner.

It was Young’s first goal for Aston Villa since 2011, when he was in his first spell at the Club, and it was the only notable moment of attacking inspiration from the two teams that otherwise struggled creatively in the final third.

LETTER: The Disrespect of the PM, AG & Police Commissioner on the Police & Fire Brigade

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room
Commissioner of Police – Atlee P. Rodney

Dear Editor,

A police officer wrote a news article to your news site indicating the short coming being faced by the officers of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda. I am a Police officer with over 20 years experience starting out as a Fire Police and then transferred to serve as a regular Police to serve the citizens of this country.

I read that article and the comments which followed and those who is indicating that officer is lying is either a liar themselves or a political prostitute.

Before I start I want to indicate I support NO political party whatsoever and the issues which will be highlighted happened under BOTH administrations. I am a Police Officer and I’ve been assigned to different Police Stations across the island and everything stated in that letter is true and worst.

There are some stations which has molds in the stations, rats running around, termite infested and essential cleaning supplies are serverly lacking in most Police Stations. Some have poor ventilation, the AC Units aren’t working, inadequate space to function and even the furnitures are in a poor conditions. If you drive pass some Poloce stations across the island you may notice that some officers are mostly outside because believe me I say in those stations the only way to survive is to stay outside and catch the fresh air.

At a particular Police station, the plywood for the roof is rooten due to the galvanise for the roof being rooten, hence when rain comes files has to transferred to another room which is more secure and that room in itself may be already filled with important documents. To the persons who says the government hired 50 new police officers and there is no shortage in Police officers is either they don’t know what they are saying or complete ignorant.

All new 50 Police are assigned to various parts and departments of the Police Force. Some may be placed in the Fire Department, Traffic Department, CID, CSI, K9 Unit etc. Because the new officers are spread across departments, even though there may be new officers to help a specific Department, concurrently sometimes there are retirements taking place. Therefore the numbers does little to nothing to help.

For a few years now when I would’ve requested vacation, the officers in administration would tell me I would have to reschedule my vacation leave because they want to make sure we have sufficient numbers of Police officers to properly man the police force. When I worked in the Fire Brigade, they too faced the same issue. As mentioned in the previous letter Fire Cheif Elvis Weaver on ABS did appeal to the government to hire more Fire Brigade Officer and I also have friends who works in that department who has said many times they too are understaffed.

Now notice now because of he letter written to your news portal on the Police, the Cabinet suddenly started mentioning in the Cabinet notes that significant repairs are being carried out on the All Saints Police station which is welcomed, however what about the other Police Stations and Fire Brigade Stations across the island which are in desperate need of repairs and in the Fire Brigade staffing.

Finally, election season is in full swing, and the government is talking up salary increases for civil servants which is well deserved considering how civil servants are struggling like everyone else in this island to make ends meet. However, I didn’t hear that the Police Welfare association who is responsible for negotiating and barging for Police Officers and by extension the Fire Brigade will also be consulted for salaries increases for Officers of both Police Departments.

I really hope they are because if the Police is included for salaries increases like other civil servants the government will have a very BIG PROBLEM on their hands along with the others issues Police officers faces daily. The Police and Fire Brigade also deserve benefits that other civil servants are getting like risk allowance, medical insurance etc, considering the dangerous nature of job we do to serve the nation. Am asking the government, are we important to the nation?

I hope that with this letter along with last weeks one the government, the Prime Minister the Hounorable Gaston Browne and in particular the Hounorable Attorney General Mr Stedroy Cutie Benjamin Police and Police Commissioner Mr Atlee Rodney address the issues the Police and Fire Brigade faces daily.

Blackheart Football Tournament Starts On Highly Competitive Note – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

The 2022 Blackheart Knockout Football Tournament got off to a fighting start last weekend with four matches played at the Soufriere Stadium.

On Saturday night, Desruisseaux defeated Laborie 1-0, thanks to a goal from Brent Willie in the 54th minute.

In the second match on Saturday, Vieux Fort South scored two goals in quick succession in the first half: one in the 44th minute and the other in the first minute of extra time. Goal scorers were Noah Nicholas and Moses Henry respectively.

However, in the second half, Canaries managed to get one into the net via Rio Longville in the 89th minute after the team lost a player who was issued a red card. Final score: Vieux Fort South 2, Canaries 1.

The sizzling football action continued on Sunday night, beginning with Micoud taking on Gros Islet in the first encounter. At halftime, both teams were goal-less.

But it was goals galore in the second half as Micoud’s Kyran Marcellin opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Gros Islet responded in the 66th minute with a goal from Aron Richard. Goals from Gros Islet in the 71st minute (Brandon Eugene) and 75th minute (Baggio Edward) put Gros Islet ahead by 3-1.

Micoud fought back, though, with Cody Fanus picking up a goal in the 81st minute before Gros Islet’s Baggio Edward sealed Micoud’s fate with another goal in the 6th minute of extra time. Final score: Gros Islet 4, Micoud 2.

The final match-up on Sunday night was another thriller, with hosts Soufriere going up against Vieux Fort North. Soufriere’s Jardel Phillip opened the scoring in the game (8th minute) and Vieux Fort North finally equalized in the 32nd minute to leave the score-line at 1-1 at half-time.

In the second half, another goal from Jardel Phillip in the 88th minute put the boys from Sulphur City in the lead by 2-1. Final score: Soufriere 2, Vieux Fort North 1.

After two years of not hosting the tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic, player performance, crowd support and interest in the tournament have been impressive thus far this year. On both nights, the ambience was electrifying both on and off the field.

The action continues at the Soufriere Stadium this Wednesday, October 12 with two matches: Marchand vs South Castries from 6:00 p.m., and La Clery vs Babonneau from 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 15 from 6:00 p.m., Dennery will clash with Central Castries, while Mabouya Valley will take on Anse La Raye from 8:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, tournament organizers have been forced to host more matches than previously scheduled at the Soufriere Stadium due to the unfavourable soggy and marsh-like conditions at the La Ressource Playing Field caused by persistent inclement weather.

Chastanet On Government Borrowing: “What Are They Doing With All This Money?” – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has expressed concern over government borrowing, asserting that the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) Government is about to borrow $350 Million at Tuesday’s Parliament.

In a Facebook post, Chastanet said the sum included $100 Million US or $271 Million EC from the Export-Import Bank of the Republic of China for Budgetary support and $30 Million US or $81 Million EC from the International Development Association to finance the COVID-19 Response.

“This new debt follows the Government’s last set of borrowing, which took place at the sitting of Parliament held on July 12th, 2022,” the former Prime Minister observed.

Chastanet said at that time, the SLP administration borrowed approximately $130 Million EC.

“This means that between July and October of this year, the Government of Saint Lucia would have borrowed $480 Million EC or almost half a billion EC dollars,” the United Workers Party (UWP) leader declared.

And he asserted that the borrowing was most disturbing because the people have received no form of financial support during the current inflation crisis.

According to Chastanet, the Government has failed to deliver on its promise of $1500 of income support to citizens.

In addition, he said the SLP allowed the price of bus fares and electricity to increase while keeping the price of gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and cooking gas at “unacceptably high levels.

“What are they doing with all this money? Instead of protecting their victory, they should be protecting you. You surely deserve better!”” The Micoud South MP wrote.
