Le Lorrain
La question de l’approvisionnement en eau potable est toujours d’actualité au quartier Morne capot au Lorrain. Le « Kolectif Eau Morne Capot » a réuni la population samedi dernier. Il s’agissait de faire le point sur l’évolution du dossier. Manifestement, on s’oriente vers une mobilisation d’envergure : le siège de Cap Nord, l’usine d’eau potable de Vivé ou les factures d’eau sont visés.
Depuis plusieurs semaines, la distribution d’eau potable dans l’un des plus grands quartiers du Lorrain est devenue très aléatoire. La population est obligée de faire appel au « système D » et notamment de se fournir en eau à une source déclarée impropre à la consommation à cause de sa très forte pollution à la molécule de la chlordécone. Un collectif a été créé et une série d’actions ont été menées dont une mobilisation devant l’usine de production d’eau potable de Vivé.

Prime Minister Dr Rowley – SUREASH CHOLAI
THE Prime Minister said the notion of multiple shootings must not be deemed as the norm in the minds of the citizenry.
Speaking on Monday ceremonial opening of the new parliamentary term, after being asked about the recent spate of gun violence, Dr Rowley said:
“It’s a period of violent crime that none of us can accept as normal, but we have to respond to it on a daily basis. But we also have to continue to manage our personal and national affairs while this appendage is dealt with.
“So we can’t pretend it is normal and we can’t accept it as normal and we will not accept it as normal.”
Asked if he was confident of a turnaround in crime, he replied, “I expect we’ll be able to do so going forward.”
Rowley said he had “very high hopes” for the new session of Parliament.
“Very high hopes. We’ve got a lot of work to do and the Government will get a lot of work done.”
Newsday asked his hopes for the September 26 national budget.
He said, “Well you know what a budget is. A budget is a series of estimates and we hope we have the revenue to go with that. We’ll make the most of what’s available to us.” Newsday asked if he was confident the budget and parliamentary session could tackle crime and poverty.
“Well, we have abandoned no area of responsibility and the budget covers a wide spectrum. Health, national security, health, education are all high up on the priority list.
“There is an unacceptably high level of crime. We’re going to focus on that. We’ll make the resources available, reasonable resources. We expect that those that are involved in crime-fighting will give of their best and we are also anticipating that our courts will be more effective and justice will be dispensed in a speedier way and we expect our detection levels will improve. These are the goals we set ourselves.”
Asked President Paula-Mae Weekes’ earlier upbraid to MPs on their conduct in Parliament, Rowley was unfazed.
He said, “There’s nothing new to it. We usually get things like that in Parliament.” Asked if MPs are generally getting the balance right between decorum and expressing the cut-and-thrust of political debate, the PM said, “All I’ll say to that is that people who are familiar with Commonwealth parliaments, see Trinidad and Tobago as one of the milder ones.”

OPPOSITION Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar reacted to President’s Paula-Mae Weekes’ upbraid of MPs over their sometimes unruly conduct by saying Parliament was not a bishops’ tea party.
Speaking in the Red House Rotunda after the ceremonial opening on Monday, the Siparia MP made it clear one must live in the real world of how parliaments globally function.
“Yes, we are elected to represent people and sometimes we have to do so stridently. We have to make our voices heard on behalf of people we represent.
“So I think it is being out of touch with reality. Not the point about working together – of course we should try to work together – but it’s not a bishops’ tea party and sometimes to have those voices represented you have to be strident, you have to be loud, on both sides (of the House).”
She said both sides of the House get shut down.
“I do respectfully honour the office of the President but it would be good if the President would honour her own words.
“We have had matters relating to interference with constitutional duties arising. We had cause to raise it in the Parliament but of course that went south…wasn’t allowed full debate.” Persad-Bissessar said Weekes must honour her own words and not just come to Parliament to buff-up MPs.
“Perhaps she would spend a little more time in the Parliament to see how it functions and why it functions in the way it does. I respectfully believe that somehow her words were misplaced.”
Persad-Bissessar however agreed with Weekes’ remark that MPs must serve the happiness of ordinary people, but said that had not occurred in the last parliamentary session.
“I’ve not seen legislation brought to fight against the scourge of crime. I’ve not seen legislation brought to deal with the poverty we are in.” She also pointed to inaction over the high cost of living.
Persad-Bissessar said she looks forward to the new session including on how crime would be addressed.
She said the Opposition would caucus on whether to continue to walk out whenever Attorney General Reginald Armour, SC, stands to speak.
Opposition MPs have walked out of the chamber whenever Armour rises to speak, ever since he became embroiled in a controversy over his remarks to a Florida law court which subsequently disqualified him from representing the Government.
