Kambon:Queen was a symbol of oppression

While some in TT are mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the head of the Emancipation Support Committee, Kafra Kambon, said TT should not feel any emotions on the queen’s passing, as she was a symbol of oppression to not just the African diaspora in TT, but all cultures in TT that experienced oppression under British rule.

“If we understand what she was a symbol of – a symbol of colonial oppression – we should not be in any emotional state over the queen’s death. The queen is dead. Fine.”

“Her death has no emotional meaning for me,” he added.

“It is just that someone has died. A symbol of an oppressive empire has died – one that I buried in my mind a long time ago.

“Someone told me about the queen’s death. I didn’t hear it on the news. When I heard the news I simply said ‘OK.’”

He said the queen was a symbol of an empire which plundered countries all over the world.

“Look at how old she was when she died. She was kept alive that long because of the plunder of countries like ours. It was that plunder that allowed them to live the lives of luxury that they did.”

He said that crimes committed by British colonisers were so horrendous that they were ordered to be destroyed, but symbols of the British empire in the form of statues and monuments remained to solidify the psychological colonisation of the minds of the people they once ruled over.

Khafra Kambon, co-founder if the Emancipation Support Committee.

“Remember, the queen is not a powerful figure, that power was psychological,” he said.

“The aura that was created around the queen was part of Britain’s strategy for power – because power is not just in the gun it is in the psychology. They really worked on the psychology of the colonies and that is why, up to today, people would not want to take down symbols of those people who represented terror and cruelty for us in TT and in the Caribbean.

“If someone killed your grandmother, would you put up a portrait of them in your living room? You wouldn’t, because they represent something that is painful for you to remember.

“The colonisation of the minds was embedded in those symbols they left in our environment. Those symbols were part of a psychological terror and domination,” he said.

On Thursday, news of the queen’s death spread around the world. Various bodies including the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, the British High Commission and several figureheads expressed public condolences over her death.

Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96.

Gobierno anuncia incentivo económico para cerca de 500 pescadores

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV

Minister of Education Underscores the Importance of Literacy in Eradicating Poverty and Ensuring Human Progress

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 8, 2022 (SKNIS): The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) commemorates International Literacy Day on September 8th annually. To commemorate this important Day and to underscore the importance of literacy to human development, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley on September 7, 2022, announced that the Ministry of Education will be observing the Day with a number of activities.

“The Ministry of Education is pleased to accept the invitation of UNESCO to partner in observing International Literacy Day on Thursday, 8th September 2022. The theme ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces’ has been appropriately chosen for this year’s international observance. The activities of International Literacy Day provide opportunities to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces, to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable and inclusive education for all. As we celebrate literacy, we ponder the chances for change, the true transformation of the learning spaces that will allow us to address any remaining literacy challenges. True literacy is not just about formal education in the physical ‘brick and mortar’ spaces. True literacy is about providing a unique and powerful tool to eradicate poverty and ensure stronger social and human progress,” said Minister Dr. Hanley.

He further noted the relevance of this year’s theme for International Literacy Day 2022, ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces’, and how it encompasses the modern view of enhanced education delivery.

“The theme for International Literacy Day 2022, ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces’ is timely and relevant.  It highlights enhancing the literacy environment to accommodate different types of learners so that they can maximize their potential. It is worthy of note, that the term ‘Literacy Learning Spaces’ is not limited to the physical environment, as important as that may be. The term brings into sharp focus engaging learners in varied and appropriate pedagogical contexts. Use of appropriate learning materials and activities, in the proper socio-cultural atmosphere, can create or transform the space to facilitate/enhance the literacy experience,” he added.

According to UNESCO, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind people of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda toward a more literate and sustainable society. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with at least 771 million young people and adults lacking basic literacy skills today.

The announcement was made by Minister Turner as a part of her periodic community update, a pre-election promise that she is meeting.

Expounding on the new development, Minister Turner said:

As your Minister of Health and Wellness, I saw the need of bringing health care services to our constituencies.

I am all about preventative care.

And definitely, you can no longer sit by where people feel any less because they either don’t have funds to go to a doctor or they do not have insurance.

So, I have partnered with a health care facility, who is willing to bring a doctor into the constituency once a month.

That will be free of charge to you, the people.

Upon hearing about the new offering, some of the attendees clapped, cheering on Minister Turner for the move.

Ben Meade, Marketing & Communications Manager at Health City Cayman Islands, was also on hand to give more information about the programme for the electoral district of Prospect.

Mr Meade shared that the offering is “about bringing health care to the community and ensuring everyone (who requires care) can get the care they need.”

For us , we are focusing on cancer screenings for the community.

We are looking at a broad number of cancers that impact the community.

We will have a comprehensive cancer screening [and] we are going to do this over several months.

We don’t want to wait until you have a short timeframe.

We want to help diagnose the members of our community with this screenings so that you can get the care that you need when you need it.

These screenings come at no cost.

Mr Meade explained further.

Members of the electoral district of Prospect may now look forward to these free health care services, which may be critical for those who are either not insured or under-insured.

Authorities to soon probe APNU/AFC’s claims that dead, overseas people voted at 2020 polls

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

…as GECOM releases documents

Claims made by the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) that dead people and persons who were overseas on Election Day voted at the 2020 polls, will soon be investigated following the release of fundamental documents by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

Subsequent to a vote taken by the seven-member Commission on Tuesday, the Elections Body has since released to the Office of the Attorney General, documents that were submitted by the then APNU/AFC in their bid to discredit the Official List of Electors (OLE) used in the 2020 General and Regional Elections.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall

Speaking during his weekly programme – Issues in the News – Attorney General Anil Nandlall, SC had posited that “once I receive them [the documents], I will pass them on to the relevant agencies with the request that an investigation be launched to verify the accuracy or lack thereof of the information contained in those documents.”

Last week, Nandlall had written GECOM seeking information on how private citizens’ data was provided to it by the then ruling APNU/AFC.

It is the first step in the direction of an investigation that the AG had previously announced would be held into how immigration and registration data of citizens ended up in the hands of APNU/AFC.

According to his letter addressed to GECOM Chairperson, Retired Justice Claudette Singh, Nandlall noted that APNU/AFC delivered to GECOM, documents claiming to show that dead people and persons who were overseas on Election Day, voted at the elections, as well as documents to claim that there were cases of multiple voting.

“These allegations continue to be peddled in the public domain by leaders and representatives of the aforesaid political entity. At the time and until now, the impression conveyed is that these documents and/or data were generated by and obtained from the official lawful repository of the specific information, for example, the Immigration Department, the Guyana Police Force and the General Registrar’s Office.”

“It is important that the relevant State agency enquires into the source of this information, upon whose directions they were sourced and, perhaps, most importantly, to officially reconfirm their inaccuracy, for public record. In the circumstances, I hereby request a copy of these documents to initiate this process,” Nandlall wrote.

The AG had previously posited that at the end of the investigation, if it is found that laws were breached, culpable persons will face the consequences.

No credibility

The Opposition-aligned Commissioners at GECOM had objected to the release of the documents in question – a move which Nandlall has since expressed is indicative of the APNU/AFC’s lack of credibility.

“And these are the guys who are repeating the very allegations and are relying upon the allegations in their incredible efforts to impugn the 2020 election results…it is they who are speaking about the information in that document and now government has signaled an intention to request that document so that it can be investigated so we can know the truth, and the people are objecting, the very people who are peddling the information in that document are now objecting to the document being released so that we can investigate,” Nandlall pointed out.

“These people have no credibility at all, nothing that they do make any sense to anybody,” he further contended. “That is what we have to deal with.”

Objections

According to People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) nominated Commissioner Manoj Narayan, the Opposition’s objections to the release of the documents were premised on reasons that include their claims that the information in the documents are contained in the election petition. According to Narayan, the Government side argued that this was not true.

Narayan said that the Opposition Commissioners also advanced the argument that GECOM is a constitutional agency and does not have to release the documents. However, Narayan noted that the Commission, as custodians of the requested documents, had no issue with cooperating with a state agency.

“The Commissioners who were appointed by the now Opposition, they were all against it. They voted against it. They did not want any of those documents to be released to the Attorney General, even though on the other side (we) argued that in the interest of fairness and transparency, we need to release those documents as requested,” Narayan had explained to this publication.
